AHundreds of years ago,a Roman army came north from England to make war on Scotland. The Scots,a brave people, loved their country very much. They fought hard to drive the enemy out of Scotland, but there were too many Romans. It looked as if the Romans would win.One night, the leader of Scots marched his soldiers to the top of a hill. “We will rest here tonight, my men,” he said. “Tomorrow we will fight one more battle. We must win or we will die.”They were all very tired, so they ate their supper quickly and fell asleep. There were four guards on duty, but they were very tired, too, and one by one, they fell asleep. The Romans were not asleep. Quickly they gathered at the foot of the hill. Slowly they climbed up the hillside, taking care not to make a sound. Closer and closer they came to the sleeping Scots. They were almost at the top. A few minutes more, the war would be over. Suddenly, one of them put his foot on a thistle(蓟). He cried out and his sudden cry woke the Scots. In a moment, they were on their feet and ready for a battle. The fighting was hard but it did not last long. The Scots wiped out the Romans and saved their country. The thistle is not a beautiful plant. It has sharp needles all over it. Few people like it. "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating fromcollege in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station and got turned down every time.In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring an inexperienced person. "Go out in the sticks(边缘地区) and find a small station that'll give you a chance," she said.I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While there was no radio-announcing job in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?"I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he put me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game.On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I'dgotten the job at Montgomery Ward.24. A global survey has found that most people can't live without their mobiles, never leave home without them and, if given a choice, would rather lose their wallet.Calling mobile phones the "remote control" for life, market research firm Synovate's poll said cell phones are so ubiquitous that by last year more humans owned one than did not.Three-quarters of the more than 8,000 respondents polled online in 11 countries said they take their phone with them everywhere, with Russians and Singaporeans the most attached.More than a third also said they couldn't live without their phone, topped by Taiwanese and again Singaporeans, while one in four would find it harder to replace the mobile than their purse. Some two-thirds of respondents go to bed with their phones nearby and can't switch them off, even though they want to, because they're afraid they'll miss something."Mobiles give us safety, security and instant access to information. They are the number one tool of communication for us, sometimes even surpassing face-to-face communication. They are our connections to our lives," Jenny Chang, Synovate's managing director in Taiwan, said in a statement.Mobiles have also changed the nature of relationships, with the survey finding nearly half of all respondents use text messages to flirt, a fifth set up first-dates via text and almost the same number use the same method to end a love affair.Apart from the obvious calling and texting, the top three features people use regularly on their mobile phones globally are the alarm clock, the camera and the games. As for email and Internet access, 17 percent of respondents said they checked their inboxes or surfed the Web on their phones, led by those in the United States and Britain. One in 10 respondents log onto social networking websites such as Facebook and MySpace regularly via mobile, again led by Britain and the United States."As the mobile becomes more and more an all-in-one device, many other businesses are facing challenging times. The opportunities for mobile manufacturers and networks howeverare enormous," said Synovate's global head of media, Steve Garton. Not everyone is tech savvy, however: 37 percent of respondents said they don't know how to use all the functions on their phone.28.According to the passage, the top two regular functions of mobile phones may be .A. camera and gameB. calling and textingC. email and calling from D. surfing and texting29. Some researchers consider that attitudes come from differences between beliefs and ideas; others believe that attitudes come from emotional states. Here, we focus on the effects of attitudes upon behavior, that is, upon the choices of action made by the individual. The kinds of actions taken by human beings are obviously influenced greatly by attitudes. Whether one listens to classical music or rock, whether one obeys the speed limit while driving, whether one encourages one’s husband or wife to express his or her own ideas----all are influenced by attitudes. These internal states are acquired throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the school.Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the particulars of that situation. An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight. A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may steal a penny when she thinks no one will notice. But the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and which makes the individual behave regularly in a variety of situations, is what is meant by an attitude.Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways. They can result from single incidents , as when an attitude toward snakes is acquired by an experience in childhood at the sudden movement of a snake. T hey can result from the individual’s experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positive attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to complete some of them. And frequently, they are learned bycopying other people’s behavio r, as when a child learns how to behave toward foreigners by observing the actions of his parents. Regardless of these differences, there is something in common in the learning and modification(修正) of attitudes.32. According to the passage, we know attitudes _________.A. are largely affected by one’s behaviorB. come from different situations in one’s lifeC. remain unchanged in one’s daily lifeD. could be chosen according to one’s will33. Which of the following is TRUE about the learning of attitudes?A. Attitudes are only learned through one’s success.B. Copying others’ behavior is not a good idea.C. Attitudes can be learned from one’s parents.D. Attitudes learned in danger will last longer.34. The author uses the examples in Paragraph 3 to show____________.A. particulars of a situation may influence an individual’s actionB. people with good attitudes may sometimes do bad deedsC. an individual may change his or her attitude fairly easilyD. people often make mistakes when they are not noticed35. cold, causes travel difficulties, power outages(断供),or otherwise endangers public safety. When snowy weather arrives in the US,it means the chance of school children benefiting from the long-standing tradition of t he"snow day",when schools are forced to close and students get an unexpected day offB)The criterion for a snow day is primarily the inability of school buses to operate safely on their routes anddanger to children who walk to school.Often, the school remains officially open even though buses do not run and classes arecanceled.Severe weather that causes cancellation or delayis more likely in regions that are less able to handle the situation.Snow days are less common in more northern areas of t he United States that are used to heavy winter snowfall, because municipalities are well equipped to clear roads and remove snow.In areas less accustomed to snow even small snowfalls of a n inch ortwo may render roads unsafe.C)S now days are a familiar theme in American film and TV shows, with children getting the good news andthen running outside for some seasonal snowman-building and snowball throwing, against a background ofjoyful pop music. But the tradition is now over for pupils in several US states such as South Carolina, Nevada,Georgia and Indiana. This academic year, many school boards have introduced policies which require students to work from home if t he school is shut by snow or extreme weather. They are known as t4e-leaming days",which certainly sounds less fon than a snow day.D)T eachers are also losing their snow days and instead will be expected to be on hand to take a virtual registerand answer students'questions online.A pilot programme in a school district in Anderson County,South Carolina, has supplied students with electronic tablets loaded with assignments to complete in the event of a school closure. If it is successful,it could be rolled out across the state.E)But some parents object to the new policy if t he vigorous debate on the Facebook page of A nderson Countyschool district is anything to go by."When it snows, let the kids enjoy it,"said one commenter.Another said the decision would"ruin school even more",and someone else called snow days"a fun part of c hildhood,^.But supporters of t he policy say it means children will miss fewer days of school.lt will also bring to an enda less popular US high school tradition:the“make-up day?,,which requires students in many states to makeup the time lost due to weatherby working during school holidays.-2024年6月四级真题第三套)-2)F) S tudents in North Carolina already have several make-up days scheduled because of school closures duringHurricane Florence, which struck in September.Tom Wilson, the superintendent(i^)of Anderson County school district, said the change away from snow days makes practical and financial sense. He said technology has changed every profession,so it makes sense to use it to^eliminate^make-up days.Adam Baker of the Department of Education in Indiana said e-learning days were proving a cc great success,^.He said most Indiana schools already use digital devices during lessons,so it was an cc easy decision^to extend this to days when schools are closed. He denies the decision is depriving children of the chance to enjoy the snow."Students are still able to enjoy snow days and outside time,"he said."Many have PE and science assignments that have them out enjoying the weather.^But local school superintendents in Ohio are resisting proposals to adopt e-learning days. They fear that students without internet access at home will be disadvantaged by the policy, and superintendent Tom Roth is concerned that e-learning days will offer a lower quality of education.G)T here are also so-called tc blizzard bags",with assignments that children take home ahead of an expected snowclosure. But Mr Roth says it is not sufficient as a replacement/!think we still need the class time to give our kids the education that they deserve,^he said."Youcan't get that with a blizzard bag or doing the work from home like that.If s not going to be as effective.H) T here is a long-running debate on whether missing days of school affects attainment. In England, there hasbeen a focus on tackling absenteeism(0T from school. The Department for Education(DFE)published research in2016arguing that missing any days at school could have a negative impact on results.Even a few days lost in a year could be enough to miss out on getting a good exam grade, the DFE's research concluded. This differed from the findings of a study from Harvard University in the US,which concluded that missing a few occasional days because of t he weather did not damage learning.I)The Harvard study examined seven years of school results data and could not find any impact from snowclosures. What caused moredisruption was when schools tried to stay open in bad weather, even though many staff and pupils were absent. But weather can make a difference to school results, according to another piece of Harvard research published last summer.Ifs hot weather that has the negative impact. The results of 10million school students were examined over13years and researchers found a^significanfUink between years with extremely hotweather and lower results.J)I fs obvious that students should go to school every day to get the most out of education.I n cases of extreme weather students don't always have that option. However, research shows that authorised absences from school such as during extreme weather are less problematic for students than absences that are not authorised. This is because unauthorised absences tend to reflect patterns and behaviours of student disengagement,or the possible negative attitudes of parents towards education that students adopt and carry with them through schooling. The level of impact on students f educational performance is all to do with the length of time that a student is absent from school and how regularly this occurs.36.There is opposition to the practice of giving children assignments to take home before extreme weather forcesa school closure.37.N ew policies adopted by many US schools require students to do online learning at home in case of a schoolclosure38.A ccording to some research, extreme hot weather negatively affects students^erfbrmance.39.There is a time-honoured tradition in the US fbr unfinished statements. For each of them there are f our choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet2with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions46to50are based on the following passage. It may sound surprising, but you don't have to be interested in fashion,or even in history,to enjoy Dress Codes:H ow the Laws of F ashion Made History.I happen to be interested in both, and ended up enjoying the book for completely different reasons.Richard Thompson Ford is a law professor, and you probably won't forget that for even one page. His carefully reasoned arguments, packed with examples, sound almost like reading a court opinion, only maybe wordier.Y ou will probably never think of fashion as a trifle again.Ford's thesis is that the best way to understand what particular fashions meant in any given era is to look at the restrictions placed on them.Through this lens,he shows us that the first laws passed in the1200s to ensure that only the nobility were allowed to wear certain fabrics, colors and ornaments reflected the rise of the middle class, who were now able to imitate some of these fashions. The status of the upper classes was threatened; fashion was a tool to preserve it.Ford takes the reader through the evolution of fashion while examining the underlying motivations of status sex, power, and personality, which,he assumes, influenced all innovations in fashion in the past and which continue to influence us today. His writing is more than alittle dense—dense with research, clauses, and precise adjectives and nouns. But there's also humor and enough interesting episodes to make the writing appealing. No one is spared his sharp analysis:not the easy targets of19th century women's crippling(伤害身体的)fashions nor the modem uniforms of Silicon Valley T-shirts.But the greatest strength of this book(on fashion!)is its intellectual profoundness.Ford asks us to question unconscious beliefs,to realize thatwe almost never do so,to understand that the simplest choices are charged with meaning, and yet that meaning can and does change all thetime.Consider the fact that a1918catalog insisted that boys and girls be dressed in the appropriate color. We believe our thinking today is evolved;Ford shows us it's not.46.W hat does the author think of t he book Dress Codes:How the Laws of The findings suggest that just as apparent personality can affect the personality of a child, the same is true for a cat and its owner. Owners defined as individuals with high levels of anxiety, fear, anger, depression and loneliness were more likely to have cats with behavioral issues. Such cats display more aggressive and anxious behavioral styles as well as more stress related sickness. They will also more likely to have an ongoing medical condition and be overweight. The research also found that mentallywell-adjusted owners had come from happier and healthier cats. Researchers explained that many owners regard their pets as a family member and form close social bonds with them. (17) The majority of owners want to provide the best care for their pets and is therefore possible that pets could be affected by the way their owners interact with and manage them. The study highlights an important relationship between our personalities and the well-being of our pets. (18) Further research is needed to investigate the cause of nature of this relationship and look at how owners’personalities are directly influencing their pet’s behavior and well-being. It is possible that the well-being of pets is driven by the underlying nature of the owner not simply by their conscious decisions and behaviors.16. What do we learn from the new study by the University of Lincoln?17. What does the passage say most pet owners want to do?18. What does the passage say it’s still needed to understand the effects of owners’personalities on their pets?Passage Two(19) One 50-minute run can add seven hours to your life. This was a claim made by The Times last week. The claim was based on a new review of studies about the effects of running. The review concluded that an averagerunners live three years longer than non-runners and that running does more to extend life than any other form of exercise. But there’s more to running than its health benefits. (20) Research published in recent years have shown that running changes your brain and mind in some fascinating ways from increasing your brain function to regulating youremotions. However, the precise effects vary according to whether you engage in short fast running or long distance running. For example, in one study, researchers compared participants’ability to learn new words after several minutes of intense running, and after 40 minutes of gentle running, participants were able to learn 20 percent faster after the intense running and they showed a superior memory when tested again a week later. In another study, researchers asked volunteers to jog for 30 minutes and then showed them clips from a sad movie. Participants who usually struggled to handle negative emotions were more intensely affected by the sad clips just as you’d expect. But crucially, this was less so if they had completed the 30 minutes jog. (21) The researchers said moderate exercise appears to have helped those participants to be less vulnerable to the impact of the sad movie.19. What did the new review of studies claim?20. What is one effect that running has on people according to recent research?21. What did another study find about the participant after they had a 30 minutes jog?Passage ThreeWelcome to the tour of the Hill House. This house built in 1904 is one of the most well-known works of Charles Hill, the famous architect. It was designed and built for local entrepreneur and his family. Before starting the tour, let me give you a brief introduction about the design of this amazing building. (23) Prior to beginning his design, the architect spends sometime in the client’s old home, observing their life and studying their habits. This meant that he could design the house according to the needs of the family. (24) The client’s main desire was to have a home with unique design, so the architect was given complete freedom. The building style is radically different from what was the fashion of the period. At the time, most large homes were constructed of timber and brick. This one, however, is made of concrete, a novel construction material in those days. The interior of the house, including the fittings and furniture, was also designed by the same person. Most of the furniture you will see is original and in good condition. However, (25) both pieces in the children’s bedrooms are copies built to thedesigns of the architect. Fortunately, all the blueprints for both the building and its contents have been preserved, so we’ve been able to replace badly damaged furniture. Let’s begin our tour, starting from the rooms.22. What do we learn about the speaker? He is the guide of the tour.23. What dis the architect do before beginning his design?24. What did the architect’s client mainly want?25. What do we learn about the pieces of furniture in the children’s bedrooms?26.G)fear27.C)avoid28.H)limited29.D)aware30.B)answer31.O)typically32.J)result33.L)rigorous34.K)review35.M)tend36.[H]Like Ms,Li,many women try to manage the added stress to reach what Dr Joyce said was an unattainable ideal“Some professional women aim to do it all They want to reach the top of the corporate ladder and flylikesuper-mom,"she said.37.[E]ference,however,is in the nature and scope of these responsibilities in the home ent in particular,“DrJoycesaid. For example ,the United Nations reported that nearly three times as much unpaid domestic work as men.38.[C]It's a common story- one we frequently ridicule and readily dismiss ,for example,by claiming that women tend to complain more than men, despite the growing sumofre-search that underlines the problem .39.[K] Disconnecting from work and home responsibilities is also obviously important .Butit'smuchcasier said than done .Itis important to understand what causes your stress in the first place .40.[F]it's not just inside he home ,though. 【听力】Conversation 1M: Welcome to Money Matters - a weekly program that helps you manage your money. Tonight, I'll be talking to Mary Johnson about budgeting.W: Hello, everyone.M: There's a magic about money, when it's not planned for, tracked and kept the record of, it literally disappears. What are some of the steps we can take to prevent this from happening?W: Well, it's all about keeping track of your money. If you don't do that, you'll never be able to set any goals for your budget or have the discipline to stick to them.M: That's easier said than done. I read recently that only 41% of Americans adhere to a budget. W: Yes, but knowing what you earn and what you spend can give you reassurance that you won't get into debt in the first place. You can do this by adding up all of your sources of income you have, and writing them all down on a piece of paper. On the same page, write down all of your monthly expenses.M: I'm always amazed at how much my expenses add up.But designating each item as an income or an expense really helps me have a much better sense of all my spending.W: Right. Most people have no idea how much they spend each day, let alone each week or month, no matter how careful they are. Next, subtract your monthly expenses from income. If the result is positive, you are living within your means. If the result is a negative number, you're going to have to cut back on your spending.M: I'm usually a negative number. I just can't resist the allure of all those prestigious goods.W: Well, it's not a catastrophe, but you do have to make some changes. Try cutting back on those non-essential items, sell some stuff in your attic or shop online to avoid unnecessary temptations like chocolate. Failing that you can always find yourself a part-time job.Q1: What does the man say about the weekly program?Q2: What did the man read recently?Q3: What does the woman suggest the man do first to avoid getting into debt?Q4: What does the woman say about online shopping?Conversation 2M: Hi there. I've come to see the flat. My name is Mark Adams. We spoke on the phone on Wednesday.W: Hi Mark. Come on up. I'll buzz you in green door, on the second floor on the right side. Nice to meet you. I spoke to all your references and they all checked out Okay. So let me show you around the place actually belongs to my mother, but her health isn't great. So we finally managed to persuade her to move in with us and rent this old place out.M:It's a great size, plenty of space, very versatile. I think it's a winner for us.W: Yes. All the appliances are brand new. There's a washing machine and a tumble dryer in the utility room next to the kitchen.M: Lots of closet space two, which is fabulous. My wife has a ridiculous number of shoes. Now, the big question What about noise and the neighbors?W: Well, all the neighbors are elderly, so no noisy kids and the back of the house overlooks a clear and peaceful pond. So it's perfect. If tranquility is what you are looking for.M: That's good news. We've been living in a less than glamorous part of Aberdeen, constantly harassed day and night by noisy neighbors. Getting to work was a nightmare too. As we only have one car. And my wife has to use it as she works nights at the hospital.W: Well, if you like the place it's yours. As soon as I get a contract drawn up with the solicitor, the first month's rent and a deposit are mandatory on signing the contract, then we can work out when is the best day for you to pay rent each month?M: We'll be incredibly happy to be your new tenants. Thank you so much. My wife will be thrilled to get out of the shabby place we are now in and start filling those wardrobes with all those shoes.Q5: What does the woman say about the flat question six?Q6: What is the man's chief consideration in looking for a flat?Q7: What does the man have to do on signing the contract?Q8: Why does the man say his wife will feel very excited if they move into the flat?Passage 1A new study has found a positive correlation between how much television children watch andtheir parents stress levels. Why? Because the more television kids watch, the more they're exposed to advertising .The more advertising they see, the more likely they are to insist on purchasing items when they go with their parents to the store. This could generate conflict if the parents refuse. All that researchers say can contribute to parents overall stress levels. What's the solution ? Perhaps the most obvious is curtailing screen time.Commercial content is there for a reason :to elicit purchasing behavior, so parents might want to shut off the TV. Researchers can see that this is easier said than done. So they suggest another option. Parents can change how they talk to their kids about purchases. The researchers suggest that parents seek input from their children on family purchasing decisions. They shouldn't try to control all purchases. Instead, parents might tell their children things like: I will listen to your advice on certain products or brands. This type of communication, the researchers assert, can lead to children, making fewer purchasing demands- that means less parent stress. However, the protective effect of this kind of communication diminishes with greater exposure to television. This is because advertising aimed at children is especially persuasive. Advertisers use an assortment of tactics, such as bright colors, happy music and celebrity endorsements to appeal to children. Plus children don't have the cognitive ability to fully understand advertising's intent that makes them particularly vulnerable to advertisements.Q9: What has the new study found about children watching television?Q10:What are parents advised to do to reduce the impact of TV commercials?Q11: What makes children particularly vulnerable to TV commercials?Passage 2Everyone is supposed to cheer for good guys. And we should only punish the bad guys, but that's not what we always do. Most of the time we do indeed reward good people. We also often punish people who harm others or who aren't good team players, but sometimes the good guys also get punished or criticized specifically because they are so good. This seems baffling because it's detrimental to group cooperation. However, the phenomenon has been discovered in multiple fields and it has been found in every society. Why does this happen? Research suggests a simple reason when one person looks really good, others look bad by comparison. Those others then have an incentive in stopping that person from looking good, especially if they can't or won't compete. After all, we're all judged in comparison with others. When faced with someone better, what can a normal person do? One option is to actively compete. A second option is to bring that person down that is to suppress their cooperation or work ethic, and first selfish motives for their actions or imply real or imagined hypocrisy. Other tactics include attacking them on unrelated dimensions or punishing them outright. Why does this matter? Critics often attack the motives of people who protect the environment, donate money or work too hard. Such good deeds are dismissed as naive or hypocritical by those who do not perform those deeds. This criticism may ultimately discourage people from doing good deeds.so it's important to recognize these attacks for what they are.Q12: What baffling phenomenon is discussed in the passage?Q13: How are we all judged according to the passage?Q14: What can a normal person do when faced with people who perform better?Q15: what may discourage people from performing good deeds?Lecture 1 雪萱In America, most researchers can see that boys and girls are brought up in different ways, taught different skills and rewarded for different acts. Women, it is agreed excel at certain tasks, men at others. There is little argument that some personality traits appear more dominant in one sex than in the other. All of this, not withstanding, gender differences are very much in the media these days. Since the rise of the women's movement, gender role behavior has come under closer scrutiny. How has this affected friendship? How do the sexes differ in their friendship relations? Most preteen children have a best friend who is usually some one of the same sex and similar age. Both sexes share an essentially positive recollection of these childhood friendships, they do not differ in this respect. However, the type of play engaged in during these early friendships is telling of the difference to come. Boys tend to form playgroups that are competitive in nature. Girls groups more frequently revolve around cooperative enterprises. Thus at an early age, boys become concerned with trying hard and winning, while girls by contrast play house and school, engaging in roles that require complimentary support. Speaking of their childhood, men recall being highly responsive to and aware of the gender role opinions of other boys. Girls in preteen years appear to be less susceptible to gender role pressure. It is not until the dating years that women report being concerned with feminine behavior. Males for the most part are responsive to the suggestion that their behavior is unmanly at almost any age. These early attitudes reinforced by social conditioning continue to play an active part in the friendships of both sexes during adolescence. This is a period when the majority of males, once again, report a close Alliance with same sex friends. Now, however, with heightened intensity, considerable energy is devoted to competing forposition and a definite undercurrent of competition permeates the relationship. Although in dissimilar fashion, females share equally fragile relationships at this age. For them, the bond of loyalty extends only to the line of romantic involvement. This is most apt to be the case in late adolescence when dating and relationships with boys take sharp precedence over sisterhood. Actually dating dilutes the intensity of same sex friendships for men also. For the majority of us, the moment we begin to date seriously, there's a competition between romance and friendship.Q16: What does the speaker say about most preteen children?Q17: What do most males devote much of their energy to during adolescence?Q18: What do children do when they reach late adolescence?Lecture 2Good afternoon. In today's lecture, we'll be talking about how and when to disclose a disability when applying for a job. On average, about 20% of the population has some form of disability. Most countries these days have equal opportunity and non-discrimination laws, yet disabled people often find it hard to decide when, how, and if at all to raise their disability problem with a potential employer. There is uncertainty about how a recruiter will perceive their disability as such many candidates fear they wouldn't be considered for a position as a result of disclosing this personal information. And research has validated this as a genuine concern for many job applicants. It’s a natural reaction, but it shouldn't be a reason to stay quiet. People need to remember that they are applying for a position they have the skills and experience to.Discussing a disability with a potential employer may help them make reasonable workplace adjustments in their favor. It's most appropriate to discuss a disability when they reply to confirm an interview, this information needed to be put up front in their cover letter or resume. because it's probably not relevant to the position itself. Candidates with disabilities should feel they have the power to make their own decisions around sharing this information free from prejudice. If they find an organization that doesn't celebrate diversity and inclusion, it could say a lot about the company's culture, perhaps the organization isn't the right fit. It's important for them to. remember That they are seeking a manager, an employer that's going to be supportive and continue to give them a great employment experience. Companies sometimes offer candidates the chance to disclose disabilities on their application form, but people shouldn't feel restricted by this method or timing. People should avoid sharing the name of their disability or condition. There is always the risk that the recruiter will research inform that is inaccurate or irrelevant. If people don't think their disability will impact their ability to perform in the advertised position, then it's entirely their entitlement to choose when and whether to share this information.Q19: Why do disabled job applicants feel reluctant to disclose their disability information?Q20: When does the speaker suggest applicants reveal their disability information? Q21: What are people advised to do when filling out their job application form?Lecture 3Smartphones Distract attention and reduce learning because of their potential to offer activitiesmore inviting than study. But what about background sound alone?A group of American researchers compared students' comprehension of verbal material when reading in the presence of background speech, instrumental music or general noise.General noise is neutral such as that from the sound of an air conditioner or fan.Student scores were most depressed in the presence of background speech. Comprehension was slightly better with the presence of music than with speech. However, when they were asked to identify melodies rather than understand text background music interfered more. When the background speech was in a language unfamiliar to participants, there was little, if any hindrance of reading comprehension.British researchers compared the effects of background speech, vocal music, instrumental music, general background noise and silence on short term memory. Background speech had the biggest negative effect. V ocal music was slightly more disruptive than instrumental. In general background noise and silence were least disrupt. It seems the degree of interference from background noise depends on the overlap between the processing required on the task and the processing required to screen out the background noise. The studies suggest that when people read and when they try to remember any verbal material, background speech will inhibit their ability.Instrumental music will have at worst a slight effect. When students write essays, however, other research has found it is best to reduce all background noise as much as possible. Not everyone reacts in the same way to distractions.Other studies suggest some aspects of personality may make a difference. The researchers subjected shy, quiet people and confident, outgoing ones to high arousal or low arousal background music, general noise or silence while asking them to remember words. Everyone performed best in the silent condition, but less sociable people were more negatively affected by each of the distractions. So when children are reading and trying to incorporate new material, parents could consider allowing some background music, particularly if it is instrumental and their child is the outgoing type.Q22: What did some American researchers find about students reading comprehension in the presence of background noise?Q23: What do we learn from the British researchers about the degree of interference from background noise?Q24: What is best for students to do when writing essays according to some research?Q25: How do people of different personalities react to distractions according to other studies?听力参考答案1.C) It helps people with budgeting.2.D) Most Americans do not stick to a budget.3.A) Keep track of his money.4.B) It helps avoid unnecessary spending.5.C) It belongs to her mother.6.B) Tranquility.7.B) Pay the first month's rent and a deposit.8.D) She will have plenty of space for her shoes.9.
