Growing up in Pasadena, California, in JPL’s backyard, Reeves developed a love for everything related to outer space, and the lab was a regular destination for school field trips. Even as a child, Reeves, now as an MIT senior(大四学生), knew she wanted to work in the space industry. Her love of space was cultivated(培养)at home, too. At MIT, Reeves quickly found her place in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics (航空航天系).As a junior(大三学生), Reeves was selected to participate in the Gordon-MIT Engineering Leadership Program. The program focuses on leadership for engineers—people who may have high technical IQs but who may be not good at expressing themselves. Reeves holds the point that in industry, people have to communicate with other engineers—to explain their ideas and fit into the organizational structure. In the second year of the program, students become coaches(教练)for the new students, which means a team coach observes and instructs the younger group. So Reeves thinks it’s really the secondyear students who are guiding the first-year students into how they can improve as leaders.Reeves has been with Women in Aerospace Engineering (WAE) since its beginning in her sophomore(大二) year. The group builds a community for women in all aspects of aeronautics. Last month, Reeves helped organize the first WAE Day, an event for 18 high school girls in the Boston area to come to MIT to learn about aerospace engineering. Reeves says events like these are especially important for exposing(使…接触) young women to the possibilities of the field.Just as she says, “Being a person who has gone into the aerospace industry and has seen the lack of women, there are often times when I am the only female in the room. I think it’s important for young women and girls to have role models, and just see that there are women doing it. I have met a lot of strong female role models for myself in industry. A lot of our events are open to men as well. We want to build a community of people who support women in aerospace.”24.What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. She feels it is difficult for women to become successful in the field.27.Why does Reeves think the WAE Day is important?A. Because it’s a girl’s dream.B. Because it makes her a leader.C. Because it helps women experience more about aeronautics.D. Because it can strengthen the community.CSandra Cisneros was born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican American family. As the only girl in a family of seven children, she often felt like she had “seven fathers,” because her six brothers, as well as her father, tried to control her. Feeling shy and unimportant, she retreated(躲避) into books. Despite her love of reading, she did not do well in elementary school(小学)because she was too shy to participate. In high school, with the encouragement of one particular teacher, Cisneros improved her grades and worked for the school literary magazine. Her father encouraged her to go to college because he thought it would be a good way for her to find a husband. Cisneros did attend college, but instead of searching for a husband, she found a teacher who helped her join the famous graduate writing program at the University of Iowa. At the university’s Writers’ Workshop, however, she felt lonely--a Mexican American from a poor neighborhood among students from wealthy families. The feeling of being so different helped Cisneros find her “c reative voice.”“It was not until this moment when I considered myself truly different that my writing acquired a voice. I knew I was a Mexican woman, but I didn’t th ink it hadanything to do with why I felt so much imbalance(不平衡) in my life, but it had everything to do with it! That’s when I decided I would write about something my classmates couldn’t write about.”Cisneros published her first work, The House on Mango Street, when she was twenty-nine. The book tells about a young Mexican American girl growing up in a Spanish-speaking area in Chicago, much like the neighborhoods in which Cisneroslived as a child. The book won an award in 1985 and has been used in classes from high school through graduate school level. Since then, Cisneros has published several books of poetry, a children’s book, and a short-story collection.28. Which of the following is TRUE about Cisneros in her childhood?A. She had seven brothers.B. She felt herself a nobody(小人物).C. She was too shy to go to school.D. She did not have any good teachers.29. The graduate program gave Cisneros a chance to _____.A. work for a school magazineB. run away from her familyC. make a lot of friendsD. develop her writing style30. According to Cisneros, what played the decisive(决定性的) role in her success?A. Her early years in college.B. Her family members.C. Her feeling of being different.D. Her childhood experience.31. What do we learn about The House on Mango Street?A. It is quite popular among students.B. It is the only book ever written by Cisneros.C. It wasn’t success as it was written in Spanish.D. It won an award when Cisneros was twenty-nine.DAlthough most hitchhikers (搭便车的人) are people, passers-by tend to ignore them because they are cautious about giving rides to strangers. But what will they do if they come across a hitchhiking robot? Will they take it to its destination or will they just leave the helpless machine by the wayside? That is the answer Canadian professors, Smith and Zeller, who study the relationship between humans and technology, are seeking for after they came up with the idea of building a hitchhiking robot.HitchBOT is built with cheap household items. Thanks to a PC tablet, GPS tracker and camera, hitchBOT not only can send its thoughts and pictures to the general(普通的) public, but also can answer general questions and keep drivers entertained with small talks. The smart robot is even able to quote(引用) interesting facts about the areas it has passed through. Not surprisingly, many people are doubtful about hitchBOT’s ability. Mostpeople think the cute robot will be damaged by someone. Actually, they are all wrong. The robot hitchhiked all the way from Halifax to Victoria, a distance of 3,700 miles. It was first picked up on July 27th by an elderly couple. It not only reached its destination on August 21st, but also had some amazing adventures along the way. It visited national parks, went fishing, went camping, and even attended a wedding where it experienced its first dance and interrupted the bride’s(新郎)speech. In addition to helping it get to its destination, its Canadian fans have gone out to ensure its safety from covering the robot with a plastic cape (披肩) to help keep it dry to ensuring that it stays healthy with motor oil.32. Why is the hitchhiking robot built?A. To help passers-by reach their destinations.B. To find out how people might react to it.C. To see if it will give rides to strangers.D. To entertain drivers on their way.33. The hitchBOT can do all of the following except .A. talking with the driverB. dancing with peopleC. sending its thoughts and picturesD. answering any question raised34. How long did it take the hitchBOT to reach its destination?A. Nearly a month.B. Over one month.C. Two months.D. One week.35. What can we learn about the hitchBOT?A. ATravelling by car in Switzerland is very easy, as villages and towns are very well marked and accessible. All green road signs indicate a highway or autobahn, blue signs are secondary roads and white signs back roads.*LimitationThe speed limit is 120 km/h (74 mph) on the autobahn, 80 km/h (50 mph) on secondary roads outside of towns and 50 km/h (30 mph) in towns if not indicated differently. Roadside automatic radar-triggered cameras help enforce these limits. Police are empowered to collect fines on the spot. The minimum age of a driver is 18 years. Seat belts are compulsory for front and rear-seat passengers. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08.*Getting throughFor travelers with motor-homes, it's good that even large motor-homes can travel through the mountain passes. The roads are well maintained and large enough even for trucks. Remember, Switzerland is a very small country (ca. 250 x 400 km) and you can easily drive from one end to another in 3 - 5 hours if you stick to the highways. If you plan to travel to Switzerland by car, take your time, you can plan to see lots of places in a short amount of time. Plan to drive for diving's sake, and try to minimally constrain yourself with time-related issues. The mountain resort towns of Braunwald, Murren, Wengen and Zermatt cannot be reached directly by private motor vehicle. Park at the railway or sky tram station and complete the journey via public transport. Trams always have priority. Buses have priority when leaving a bus stop. Traffic going up a mountain has priority. Some mountain roads require one-way traffic during certain hours only; these hours will be posted at either end of such roads.*FuelFuel stations along express ways are usually open from 6:00 a.m. to 10pm or midnight. Outside of open hours fuel is commonly available from automatic pumps that accept 10 and 20 SwF (瑞士法郎)notes or credit cards. Many stations accept major charge cards like Visa, Master Card or American Express. Fuel price ranges from SFr. 1.75.- to 1.95.- depending on the oil price.21. What can you know from the text?A. The mountain roads are wide enough for motor-homes or trucks to go through.B. Travelers should try to save time to cover the places of interest in Switzerland.C. Travelers can ride motor-homes to visit Braunwald, Murren, Wengen and Zermatt.D. In Switzerland people over 16 are permitted to drive.22. What might NOT be available for travelers to pay fuel in Switzerland?A. Swiss FrancsB. Ali-payC. MasterCardD. American Express23. What type of writing is this text?A. Geography posterB. An activity announcementC. Travel journalD. Travel guideBSince I was first in China in 2012, my life, and China itself, have developed and changed a lot. My first China interaction was in 2012, when I came here with a friend. We traveled from Beijing to Hong Kong, all in 5 weeks. We had a fantastic time meeting local people, exploring beautiful places and eating delicious food. After this experience traveling across China and eating local food, I really wondered “How did I live without eating dumplings and eggpla nt on a weekly basis?” Well, I guess I did, somehow, for 22 years! As my Chinese improved during my studies I became more independent and more aware of the possibilities of Waimai, or food home delivery. I suddenly noticed the thousands of Waimai drivers zooming across the roads on their motorcycles. On deep, dark Beijing winter days and rainy days, Waimai is like the holy grail and as I enjoyed my take - away dumplings I would think and laugh to myself, “How did I live before without being able to get Wai mai?” Well, I guess I did, somehow, for 23 years! In mid-2015, I was back in China again for my master's degree. That's when I came across my first Mobike: “Oh, that’s a unique bike and surely it will get stolen soon ”, I thought as I passed on my own b lack bike. But one week passed and I saw it still there. Then the one Mobike sighting turned into two and three, and soon thousands and then seemingly overnight the streets of Beijing were flooded with orange and yellow wheels. Again, I pondered on how I ever lived without my shared bike account. Well, I guess I did, somehow, for 25 years!China today is a country still steeped in ancient knowledge and custom, yet one that is also bursting with new ideas and changes. Although some things will always stay the same, something else is constantly changing at a pace beyond comprehension. I’m sure as I continue my life here in Beijing I will be swept up in the next new convenience of life that China’s rapid development is bringing out.24. Yet the books that American children used in school all came from Britain. The books were all about British people and British places. Webster wanted books that would mean more to American children. So he wrote three books that used American examples--a grammar book, a spelling book, and a reader. These books were very popular, and millions of them were sold.Webster was interested in changing the spellings of words. He wanted words to be spelled the way they were pronounced. For example, he thought the word head should be spelled “hed”, and the word “laugh” should be spelled “laf”. People liked Webster's suggestions. However, few words were actually changed. One group of words that were changed were words in which an unpronounced “u” followed an “o”. That is why Americans write “color” and “labor”, and the British write “colour” and “labour”.With the money he made from his books, Webster was able to start on his great work. It was the first American English dictionary, published in 1828. Webster's dictionary had over 70,000 words and gave the meaning and origin (起源) of each. To this day, Webster's work is the example that most dictionaries of American English follow.28. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Test yourself. This will help you to understand as well as learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding.Take Fuller NotesNotes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words.Study the MiddleThe best time to review is soon after you've learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of the lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review.Sleep On ItStudy before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material you have just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you've fallen asleep.Combine Memory and UnderstandingThere are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and math formulas are better learned by rote. Ideas are best learned by understanding. The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got confused and try again.32. You can notice your mistakes by ________.A. studying the middleB. taking notesC. speaking things out aloudD. sleeping on it33. When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading.A. underline important notesB. write as quickly as possibleC. take down every detailD. write notes in your own words34. The writer advises you to ________ as it is easier for you to remember material.A. study before going to sleepB. do some exercise after studyingC. study as soon as you get upD. study after a period of activity35. Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?A. Thinking about an idea in different ways.B. Reading from the beginning to the end without stop.C. Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know.D. Going back to what first made you confused and start again.第二节:七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面材料,根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
