Unlike many other countries ,ourpeople speak a lot of language. So we use English, which we gotfrom British rulers hundreds of years ago. Of course, we haveourown way of using English.S2: Well, I live on a huge green island in western Europe. Hundreds of years ago, my people spoke a very different language from English. Then the British rulers came. Now the old language is spoken in onlya few village in the western part of my country.S3: My country has more than 7,000 islands. Some of them are very large but most of them are quite small. Hundreds of years ago, the Spanish rules changed the way we live. Much later ,the American rulers taught their own kind of English in our schools. Nowadays, we speak a kind of English that borrows words from American English but is mostly our own.S4:My country is very small. In fact, it's really a city. It is in southeastAsia and is very rich. People come from all over Asia to do business here. Today , you can hear our kind of English spoken everywhere in the city and on many ships that come here.Listening task P50CP: What are you doing this weekend, Wang Ting ?WT:I'm going to buy some CDs to improve my English.CP: What? Are you kidding ?WT: No. I often listen to English songs and learn them. It's an easy way to learn some idiomatic English expressions. Sometimes I watchfilms too.CP: No, not me ! I used to watch English films but I can't understand them without the Chinese subtitles. I think English is too hard. WT: You give up too easily. Why not watch CCTV 9 orlisten to songs like me ?CP: I sometimes do that. I like watching the news and the interviews on CCTV 9. They often have Chinese people talking and theygive subtitles in English to explain what they are saying. I find that very useful.WT: Yes, that's a good way to practise your understanding of English. Why don't you also listen to the native speakers and improve your listening skills?CP: Yes, I think I'll do that more regularly. My teacher always says that "little and often " is the way to learn. She'll be proud of me ! Speaking task P52S1: Now what helped us most to learn English?S2: I remember extra reading helped me. Why don't they read newspapers?S3: Yes, a good idea. I found they helped me increase my vocabulary, butI found listening the most difficult.S4: Perhaps they could listen to the radio. I like to listen to native speakers but they used to speak rather fast for me. Now I've beenlistening every day for some time. I can understand the differentaccents better. That has been very good practice.S1: What about watching English films? Did that help you ?S2: The action films are very good to watch. Sometimes the accents made it difficult , but it doesn't mater. You can follow the story andunderstand some of the English through the action. Did youfind that? S3 and S4: I did! I did!S1: So we should say that we learned our English by listening to native speakers on the radio,by extra reading that was not too difficult and by watching films. That seems very clear. So let's fill in the chart.。

Unit 1LISTENING TEXTDear Lisa,There is nothing wrong with you and this boy being friends and studying together.Of course a boy and a girl can be good friends. Ending your friendship with this boy would be a stupid thing to do. You would lose a good friend and someone to study with.Teenagers like to gossip, and they often see something that isn't real .Perhaps your classmatescannot understand your friendship with this boy. That's no reason to stop it. My advice is to ignore your classmates. That way you will show them that you are more grown-up than they are. YoursMiss WangPart ILeslie Clark, a Canadian from Vancouver, arrives in China to do some business. Her company sells buses. During her stay she meets many Chinese people. Most of them are very kind to her. A few of them invite her to dinners with delicious food and drink. They take her to interesting places and to a mountain in the countryside. Some people even invite her to be a guest in their homes. Leslie is asked whether she thinks the Chinese are friendly. " Yes, " she says, " I think Chinese people are very friendly."Part 2When she gets on the plane to fly home, another Canadian asks her, "So, did you make any friends in China?" Leslie replies, "Yes, I made some good friends. Of course they are business friends. No one can become a close friend when you see them for such a short time. I think some of them really liked me but others may have been trying to be my friend for their own reasons . "On Saturday evening I talked to Daddy about my friendship with Peter. Daddy said, "I think you must be careful, Anne. We live very close together here. Then on Sunday morning he called me and we talked about it again. He said, " Anne, I've thought about what you told me. I think you should not talk to him alone so often. This is a special situation. If you were outside you could see many other boys and girls. You could do all kinds of other things. But here you are together all the time and if you want to get away you can't. In fact you see each other 24 hours a day. What happens if you quarrel?I did not agree with him and continued to talk to Peter every evening. A few days later Daddy showed he was not pleased with me. He had thought that after our talk I would not go upstairs every evening. He was disappointed that I had not followed his advice.Unit 2Part 1Hey, y'all, this here is Buford. WK: Hello!G: Hello! Are you travellers?WK: Yes. We're travelling along the Mekong River. We've been all through China and now we're going to follow the river through Laos.G: I'm Laotian. The Mekong's our most important river. Did you know that it appears on our national flag?WK: Really?G: Yes. We use the river for washing, fishing and transporting things around the country. We'd be lost without it. It's better than a road.WK: Well, no wonder I've seen boats going up and down--- they're transporting goods and people.G: Yeah. We call it "the sea of Laos"although we are not near the sea. It's because the water is as useful to us as the sea.WK: How interesting! In Tibet the river's called"the water of the rocks". Both names tell us a lot about the river, don't they?G: Yes, they do. Watch out for the temples, caves and a waterfall along the river.WK: Wow! Can we sleep by the river?G: Yes, of course you can. There are many small villages along the river. You can stay there if you wish.WK: Thanks a lot.JOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONGPart 4 OUR JOURNEY THROUGH LAOS The next day we crossed the border into Laos. We were interested to learn that most of the western border of Laos is formed by the Mekong River. The country also has the smallest number of people in Southeast Asia, so there is plenty of space for villages and fields. As we cycled across the plains, we could see many low mountains covered intrees. Autumn is the best time to travel here. The weather was so cool and dry that it was very pleasant to ride alongside the river. On our third night we slept in a small village on little pieces of wood. The village had no lights. In a few houses, however, we could see candles. It was very quiet. On the small road near the village, we heard only one truck all night. However, the river sounded like a man singing in a low voice. The next morning we made an early start and travelled quite far before lunch. Along the way, strange buses called tuk-tuks passed us. For lunch we ate a special noodle soup. After lunch we were tired so we put our bikes on a bus going to Vientiane---the capital of Laos. A cage of chickens sang to us all the way!JOURNEY DOWN THE MEKONGPart 5 BY THE RIVER IN LAOSAfter leaving noisy and crowded Vientiane, we cycled on to the south. On our way we saw an old man fishing on the Mekong. We stopped to talk to him. We put our hands together to greet him in the way of his people. He smiled and moved his head down a bit. Then he spoke to us.M= Man WK= Wang Kun WW= Wang Wei M: Good morning. Where are you going ?WK: We're travelling along the Mekong. Can you tell us about life by the river?M: Well, it's changed a lot. In the past there were many small villages along the river. The fisher men caught many different kinds of fish and sold them.W: Has life changed much?M: Er, the new dams made a difference to many people's lives. Some villages disappeared and now those people live and work in the towns. They live a better life there, but I prefer the old way of life and so I'm still here. I like the peaceful life along the river and I don't like the noise of the city because I am a good fisherman.WK: Do you catch many fish?M: I catch enough for my family and I sell what's left over to other people.W: That sounds good. What else can you see by the river?M: There are many different kinds of animals and plants as well as temples, caves and a waterfall. Its a protected area so you can tell that it's very special.Unit 4A reporter is asking a man to describe his experience in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 .R= reporter M= manR: What was the first thing you remember?M: Oh, my goodness. It was about 5 o'clock in the morning. I remember, I woke up when I was thrown out of the bed. When I tried to walk. the floor shook so that I fell. I felt terrified and rushed downstairs.R: What did you see outside?M: Oh, I saw things I never want to see again. It seemed as if the end of the world came. People were crying, shouting and running everywhere. Bricks were falling down from some buildingswhile big ones were shaking… Lots of people were getting buried under bricks. There were great fires around us. It was terrible.R: Did you realize what was happening?M: No. I asked a man standing next to me what happened. Before he could answer, some bricks fell on him and he was killed.R: That sounds frightening. Did you know where to find a safer place?M: Oh, no. Luckily I met a man who knew the way to a boat.R: So…you got away easily?M: No. we didn't. It was difficult because the streets had deep cracks. As we were carefully picking our way, some frightened cows rushed up Market Street and dropped into one of them. I'll never forget the noise they made. Some of them had broken their legs and others were climbing upon each other to get out. Horrible!R: How did you feel once you'd left the city?M: Umm. I felt safer because we were being cared for. The soldiers saved us. They brought us water and food. Thanks to them many of us are still alive!Part 1Why do earthquakes happen? Scientists believe that the surface of the earth is covered by a number of moving plates. Sometimes two plates move towards and push against each other. Sometimes they stop for years but at other times they jump and an earthquake is felt. Because of the movements of these plates, California, China and Japan have a lot of earthquakes. You can see the result in San Francisco where the Pacific plate meets the North American plate .When the 1906 earthquake happened, the Pacific plate jumped 5 to 6 metres to the north.Part 2China is a country where many earthquakes happen. The Pacific plate is pushing China from the east and the Indian plate is pushing China from the southwest. The power of this movement created the Himalayas and Mount Qomolongma. It now causes earthquakes in China. We cannot stop earthquakes but we can do things to make sure they do not destroy whole cities. First it is not a good idea to build houses along the line where two plates meet. Second, if you think there may be an earthquake, make sure to build houses on rock rather than sand. Third, you must make the houses as strong as possible. Weak buildings will fall down in an earthquake, but strong ones may stay up.PRACTISE AND PREPAREEver since the San Francisco earthquake, all children in California have been taught what to do during an earthauake.T= teacher S= studentPart IT: Now, students, do you remember what we should do betore an earthquake comes?S1: We must make a list of things, It should tell us what to do, where to be safe and who tocontact.T: Good. So first what should we do?S2: We should" drop, cover and hold".T: Excellent. Now what does that mean?S1: We must drop to the floor and cover our heads with our hands.T: Yes.S2: We must cover ourselves by hiding under some furniture.T: Right.S3: We must hold onto the furniture so it doesn't move away from us during the earthquake.T: Well done, So don't forget. ts always" drop, cover and hold".Part 2T: Now suppose you are outside when an earthquake comes. What should you do?S3: Go to an open space away from buildings, trees or power lines.T: Very good. What should you do if you're in the living room?S1: I should tie the television to a table so it won't move. I should make sure that the bookcases are already tied to the wall.T: Fine. but what should you do if you are alone when the earthquake starts?S2: Ring a family friend to tell them where I am and collect my personal earthquake bag.T: Quite right. You've done a great job Now for your homework I want you to think about what to put into your earthquake bag We'll discuss tomorrow.Unit 5WHY ELIAS JOINED THE ANC YOUTH LEAGUEI joined the ANC Youth League because it fought for equal rights for black and white people in South Africa. Here are three reasons:First, white people did not have to carry passbooks and could work anywhere. As a black person I could not work without a passbook. This passbook had your name, address and birthplace in it. If the police found me without it or if I was living in the wrong town, I could be put in prison. So I went to the ANC Youth League for help.Secondy, ih the gold mines where I worked, the white workers sat in their offices while the black South Africans worked underground. When we worked at the mines we could not live with our families like the white people did. We had to live in large rooms with beds placed like desks in a classroom. I wanted to live in a home of my own just as white workers did. I believe the ANC Youth League could help us solve this problem.Thirdly, the white people could live anywhere they liked in South Africa. They owned almost all the land although they were fewer in number than the black people. They had the best schools. They had the best doctors. They made the laws. We wanted to have the same rights and be equal with the white people in our own land. Those are the reasons why I joined the ANC Youth League.THE LIFE OF WILLIAM TYNDALELi Jing has just read the Old English Bible. She wants to find out more about the man who wrote it in English. So she asked his friend Michael about it.LJ =Li Jing M= MichaelPart 1LJ: Hey, Michael. Do you know anything about William Tyndale?M: Umm.…Yes. He wrote the first English Bible.LJ: I've just read it. It has such beautiful English. Is he famous in Britain?M: Yes, I think so.LJ: When did he live?M: Well, he was born in London in the fifteenth century. He lived from 1494 to 1536, so he was only 42 years old when he died.LJ: Why did he write the Bible in English? M: Many years ago the Bible was written in the Greek and Hebrew languages. Most people in England couldn't read the Bible at all .LJ: So they liked his English Bible?M: Yes, indeed they did! People still use his words and expressions today.Part 2LJ : Did everyone like this English Bible? MS: No. At that time the king was Henry Vlll. He was not happy because he didn't want the people to read the Bible in English.LJ: Oh dear! What did he do?MS: He tried to stop William Tyndale. However, William moved to another country called Belgium and did his work there.LJ: Did the king find him?MS: No, but other people found him in Belgium .LJ: What happened?MS: Now let me see…He was put into prison and later killed.LJ: How terrible !Do you think that writing the Bible in English was a good idea?MS: Of course it was! People in England still love William Tyndale's words. It's still the most popular Bible written in English.LJ:So it was worth it! He was certainly a brave man.Part 1Do you know what a point of view is? It means a way of looking at things. For example, when an accident happens, the police will ask everybody who was nearby what happened. They won't just ask one person because that person may not have seen everything that happened. So the stories people tell will often be different. This is because they each have a different idea of the accident and so a different point of view.Let us look closer at this accident. A boy is walking in the road when a car comes up behind him and hurts him. Two people see what happens. Let us listen to their stories.Part 2A: I was walking along the road when I saw the boy coming towards me. He was walking in thebicycle lane of the road. A car came very fast up the road in the bicycle lane. The driver did not see the boy and knocked him over and hurt him. It was the car driver who caused the accident. B: I was following the boy who was walking in the road. He was not doing what he should and he moved further into the road as the car came up behind him. The car tried to stop but it was too close to him. So the car hurt the boy. But it was the boy who caused the accident. When you hear the two points of view, it is up to you to decide who is correct. So who do you think caused the acciden?。
