7. by the time
在他到达之前我们将会把工作全部完成。
By the time he arrives, we will have finished the work.
早在他14岁之前,他就自学了高等数学。
By the time he was 14, he had learned advanced mathematics all by himself.
区别:by the end of与by the time
(1)两者意义不同,by the end of 在……结束之前,by the time表示在……之前。
(2)用法接续不同,by the end of后接表时间的名词,by the time后接一个句子。
(3)两个词组后均要用完成时态。
8. run through
(1)to use up quickly: 挥霍掉
She ran through all her money.
她很快花完了所有的钱。 (2)to rehearse quickly: 匆匆排练
我们再排练一下第一场。
Let's run through the first act again.
(3)to go over the salient points or facts of: 匆匆看过,把……的突出点或事实过目一下
The crew ran through the preflight procedures.
机组人员又复习了一遍飞行前的程序。
We ran through the witness's testimony before presenting it in court.
在法庭上出示之前,我们先过目一下见证人的证词。
run across 偶然遇见
run into
(1)偶然遇见,遇到;
(2)(汽车等)撞到人
Helen被汽车撞了,失去了一条腿。
Helen was run into by a car and lost one leg.
run out (of)耗尽
We human being will run out of oil one day sooner or later if we keep consuming
it at such a speed.
9. It is believed that
相信罢工至少会延续一个星期。
It is believed that the strike will last for at least a week.
相信他们很快会来帮助我们的。
It is believed that they will come to our help shortly.

herd: a group of large animals, eg. cows, deer, elephants
bunch: a number of things of the same type, eg. bananas, grapes, keys, flowers
pack: a group of animals hunting together, eg, dogs, wolves, or a complete
set of playing cards
flock: a group of small or mid-sized animals, eg. sheep, goats, birds
swarm: a large group of insects, eg. bees, ants, flies

11. either…or…, neither… nor…
eg. Either Ann or Jane should have arrived by now.
eg. Neither the museum nor the site itself interested her.
eg. They neither told me the location nor showed me the map.
运动员将乘飞机或火车来南京。
Athletes will come to Nanjing either by plane or by train.
每天晚上或者丈夫,或者妻子为儿子讲故事。
Every night, either the husband or the wife tells stories to their son.
Tom既不会唱歌也不会跳舞。
Tom can neither sing nor dance.
Practice:
将下列两个句子合并成一个。
Tom didn’t go skating. Neither did Jack.
He isn’t fond of terror films. Neither is his brother.

We can go skating. We can also stay at home.
Answers:

We can either go skating or stay at home. 12. 集体名词(group words)
做复数的集体名词:people, clothes, cattle, police
做单数的集体名词:equipment,furniture(家具)
既可做单数又可做复数的集体名词:family, team, class, government, public(公众)。将该名词所表示的集体视为一个整体,则动词用单数。将侧重点放在组成集体的成员上,动词用复数。
eg. That heard of cows is the healthiest the farm has had.
The herd of cows are moving toward the farm.
Exercise:

(二)Grammar 主谓一致Subject-verb agreement
(1)The verb should be singular if the subject is
(a)a singular noun or an uncountable noun
(b)a phrase of measurement, a title or a name
eg. Two hours is too short for the visit.
(c)a phrase or clause
eg. Travelling to Pompeii is exciting.
That it keeps raining worries the tourists.
