ALong ago a Native American chief named Shenandoah lived with his tribes(部落)in what is now the state of Virginia. Little is known about Shenandoah, but in some way, the soft sound of his name was given to a river. The Shenandoah River still flows in a deep valley between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains, just as it did when Chief Shenandoah lived. It is a slow moving river, soft and as beautiful as its name. Some word experts who believe the word “Shenandoah” means “spruce river” because thewaters of the river run through great forests of spruce trees(云杉). And this explanationcould be correct. However, there is an old Native American story which is far more beautiful than that of the experts. Centuries before Europeans came to the New World, there was a great lake of blue water hidden in the mountains of Virginia. For hundreds of years, Native American tribes lived near this lake, feeding on the fish from its clean waters. The Native Americans often climbed up the mountains and camped there during their long hunts for food. In the evenings they sat near their camp and looked down at the beautiful lake.On a clear, starry night you could see thousands of stars shining and dancing on the water below. The Native Americans loved this lake, and because they could see the stars in it, they called the lake, “Clear Daughter of the Stars.” In their language, the word for this was “Shenandoah.”One day the lake started to disappear. Its water ran out of the valley, through a break in the mountain side. The waters ran on and on until they joined another riverknown as the Potomac. At last, the lake was gone. In its place was only a river. It is the beautiful Shenandoah River today. However, the word Shenandoah becomes well known to people because someone wrote a song about it some years ago.“Shenandoah” is perhaps one of America’s most recognizable folk songs. Some say the song refers to the river. Others say it is about the daughter of Chief Shenandoah. Regardless of what the song is about, "Shenandoah" remains an American classic.“O2 Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away you rolling river; O Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away I'm bound to go, 'Cross the wide Missouri …”1. According to the text, “ Shenandoah” may be the following EXCEPT______.A. “spruce river”B. the PotomacC. “Clear Daughter of the Stars”D. an American chief’s name2. “ Shenandoah” is familiar to Americans mostly because of ______.A. pure and refreshing waterB. a great historical characterC. an American classic songD. the mysterious disappearance of a lake3. The most suitable title of the passage is ______.A. Shenandoah and Its Native American RootsB. An American Chief’s Romantic TaleC. The Mystery of a Missing LakeD. A Beautiful American SongBAmericans love peanut butter. The average child will eat 1,500 peanut butter before he or she graduates high school. But there is a controversy over a new peanut butter. It is called STEEM Peanut Butter. This peanut butter adds a new ingredient: caffeine. Coffee is a popular morning drink because it has caffeine and gives people energy in the morning. Even small amounts of caffeine can be dangerous to children.United States Senator(参议员) Charles Schumer says.“Peanut butter, one of thesnacks most closely connected with children, might have to be stored in the medicine cupboard rather than in the kitchen cupboard. This will shock the Food and Drug Administration.” Schumer wants the U.S. FDA to investigate. He observed that earlier the FDA prevented plans for a caffeinated chewing gum.STEEM, the manufacturer, said, “We are selling the caffeinated peanut butter all over the world. The product provides caffeine in an easily digestible way. Caffeinated foods have been sold in U.S. stores for well over a decade and are in no way a new idea. Customers tell us they want to eat the caffeinated peanut butter so they don’t have to drink as much coffee or energy drinks. The peanut butter is not intended for children.”“Peanut butter has been a favorite of children for generations,” Schumer continued: “Parents across the country have to worry about a scene in which their child mightunknowingly bite into a peanut butter that contains more caffeine than two cups of coffee.”The American Academy of Pediatrics says caffeine in small amounts can help the physical performance of adults. But the academy urges parents not to allow children to take even small amounts of caffeine owing to caffeine’s possible negative effects on a child’s heart and brain development.4. There is a controversy over the STEEM Peanut Butter because it contains ______.A. fatB. peanutC. caffeineD. nutrition5. Charles Schumer suggests that the new peanut butter should be ______.A. kept in the kitchen cupboardB. out of children’s reachC. manufactured in huge quantitiesD. eaten by children for generations6. More than 60 characters in the game were characters from history, including many from the classic novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.”“They (the characters in the game) not only travel through time and space to fight together, but also take on historical figures’ names with no connection at all to their experiences in history,” the newspaper argued, adding that this characteristic could easily confuse young players. Some 54 percent of the game’s players are aged between 11 and 20, the newspaper added.“King of Glory” is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game designed by Tencent Games. It was launched in 2015. In 2016, the total profit of the game reached nearly 7 billion RMB, some 18 percent of the total profit for mobile gaming in China. The Guangming Daily article was met with significant support and approval. Some people pointed to online search results for the historical figures, which increasingly provide information about the characters in the game rather than the real historical figures. However, some hit back at the criticism, arguing that games are supposed to be creative, and that “King of Glory” doesn’t claim to be set in any specific historical period.“I am aware that there are many young players, some even in primary school. Some might be affected by the game in certain ways, but it can do a lot of good if students become interested in the characters and do more research to that end,” one “King of Glory” player told the People’s Daily Online.8. W hat is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?A. To explain why the game is popular.B. To present that the game has become a target for criticism.C. To convince people that the game is distorting history.D. To introduce the game to the public.11. W hat’s the author’s attitude towards the game?A. Objective.B. Doubtful.C. Favorable.D.Disapproving.DSoaping up your hands may do more than just get rid of bacteria. It may wash away the inner stress you feel right after being forced to make a choice between two attractive choices, according to a new study. The study builds on the past research into a phenomenon known as “the Macbeth effect”. It turns out that Shakespeare was reallyonto something when he imagined Lady Macbeth trying to clean her conscience byrubbing (擦) invisible bloodstains (血迹) from her hands in his tragedy Macbeth.A few years ago, scientists asked people to describe a past wrong act. If people were then given a chance to clean their hands, they later expressed less guilty than people who hadn’t cleaned. This finding interested W. S. Lee, a researcher, “anything from the past, any kind of negative emotional experiences might be washed away,” says Lee.He decided to test hand washing’s effect on one kind of bad feeling: the stress we feel after being forced to choose between two attractive choices, because picking one choice makes us feel that we’ve lost the other.People usually try to calm this inner conflict by later exaggerating(夸大) the positive aspects of their choice. He had students rank 10 different music CDs. Then he offered students two of the CDs and told them to select one as a gift. Some students then used liquid soap. Others only looked at the soap or sniffed it. “Actually, you do not need water and soap,” says Lee.Later, the students again had to rank all the music CDs. People who didn’t wash their hands had the normal response—they scored their take-home CD higher, suggesting that they now saw it as an even more attractive one than before. But this wasn’t true for the hand washers. They ranked the music about the same.“They feel no need at all to justify the choice,” says Lee.But Lee also says it’s too soon to know whether people should head for a sink after making a tough choice. He says washing may help decision-makers by cleaning away mental disorder. But perhaps if they don’t go through the usual post-decision process of justifying their choice, they might feel more sorrow in the long run.12. What is true about “the Macbeth effect”?A. Shakespeare used to wash his hands before writing Macbeth.B. Macbeth knew about the importance of cleaning hands.C. People feel less ashamed after washing their hands.D. Lady Macbeth had a habit of washing hands.13. I n Lee’s experiment, those who didn’t wash their hands after making a choice________ __.A. felt regretful about their choiceB. valued their choice more than beforeC. wished they had washed their handsD. didn’t care about their choice14. A ccording to Lee, those hand washers ____________.A. will surely feel more sorrow in the long runB. tend to exaggerate the positive side of their choiceC. will never regret their choiceD. consider justifying their choice unnecessary15. W hat is the best title of the text?A. Benefits of Washing Your HandsB. Importance of Justifying Your ChoiceC.Washing Away Your StressD. It is a place without war, hunger, poverty, or crime. It is a place where the people work together and share. There is no money in Utopia because the people do not need money. They do not have personal possessions because everything belongs to everyone. All of the people are equal in Utopia, and the laws are all fair.Utopia is not a new place. Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher, described a perfect society in his famous dialogue The Republic. In Plato’s Republic, philosophers were the kings, and every person had a place in the society. In 1516, Sir Thomas More wrote about an island in the Pacific Ocean where everything was perfect. He named the island“ Utopia”. In 1602, Tommaso Campanella wrote The City in the Sun about a perfect community on the island of Ceylon ( now Sri Lanka ) ; and in 1872, Samuel Butler wrote a novel about a perfect country which he named “ Erewhon”. “ Utopia” is a Greek word that means “ not a place”, and “Erewhon” is the English word “ nowhere” spelled backwards.Utopia is a perfect place, b ut it is not a real place. Most ‘real’ Utopias last only a short time. This is because everyone wants to live in it, but no one knows how to make it work. It is probably not your fault, but once you form the habit of blaming somebody or something else for a bad situation, you are a loser. You have no power and could do nothing that helps change the situation. However, you can have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusingon whom to blame and start focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner’s key to success.Winners are great at overcoming problems. For example, if you were late because your car broke down, maybe you need to have your car examined more regularly. Or, you might start to carry along with you the useful phone numbers, so you could call for help when in need. For another example, if your workmate causes you problemson the job for lack of responsibility or ability, find ways of dealing with his irresponsibility or inability rather than simply blame the person. You should accept the fact and find creative ways to work successfully regardless of how your workmate fails to do his job well. This is what being a winner is all about—creatively using your skills and talents so that you are successful no matter what happens. Winners also have some problems in their lives; they have just as many difficult situationsto face as anybody else. They are just better at seeing those problems as challenges and opportunities to develop their own abilities. So, stop focusing on “whose fault it is.” Once you are confident about your power overbad situations, problems are just stepping stones for success.【1】According to the passage, winners .A.deal with problems rather than blame othersB.meet with fewer difficulties in their livesC.have responsible and able colleaguesD.blame themselves rather than others【2】The underlined word remedy in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to _________.A.avoid B.refuse C.improve D.consider【3】 When your colleague brings about a problem, you should .A.find a better way to handle the problemB.blame him for his lack of responsibilityC.tell him to find the cause of the problemD.ask a more able colleague for help【4】 When problems occur, winners take them asA.excuses for their failuresB.barriers to greater powerC.challenges to their colleaguesD.chances for self-development【5】 Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A.A Winner’s Achievement.B.A Winner’s Problem.C.A Winner’s Opportunity.D.A Winner’s Secret.五、其他People are increasingly discontent(不满的) with the rich people, as is said in a new online poll(投票). The poll by the China Youth Daily in cooperation with has highlighted(突出,强调) the apparent discontent over the country's widening income gap. Nearly 8,000 people filled in online questionnaires last week, and when asked to use three words to describe society's rich, the top responses were "extravagant"(奢侈的), "greedy" and "corrupt”. About 57 percent of those polled said that "extravagant" was the best w ord to describe the rich, followed closely by "greedy”.Sarcastically(讽刺的是), despite their dissatisfaction, 93 percent of those polled wished they could be rich too, and that richer people should be "socially responsible”. Some 33 percent of respondents al so praised rich people for being "smart”. Nearly 90 percent of respondents agreed that most people in society, including themselves, were willing to speak up for the poor but were reluctant to take action and actually do something for them. The survey comes on the heels of a heated debate over comments made by renowned economist Mao Yushi, who said he was "speaking for the rich and working for the poor”. A report released by the Asian Development Bank last Wednesday revealed that China's Gini coefficient —— an indicator of the wealth divide —— rose from 0.407 in 1993 to 0.473 in 2004.An earlier CASS report said that the richest 10 percent of Chinese families now own more than 40 percent of all private assets, while the poorest 10 percent share less than 2 percent of the total wealth. The income disparity (不一致、差异) of the country is close to that of Latin America, the report which came out in January, said.It is hoped that the richer should be more socially responsible to give aid to those who need help to make this income disparity smaller and smaller and that the poorer should have a friendlier attitude towards the rich.I. 【1】__________People are more and more discontent with the rich people.II. I’d like to share with you my impression of Paris. Actually, there’s something interesting to see in every corner of Paris: the old buildings, neighborhoods, and the historical monuments. The weather’s been great too, cool and dry. Some aspects of life here are different from those in the United States. The most obvious thing is that there is much more activity in the streets than in a typical US city. People gather together in open markets, cafés, parks, and squares. Then, of course, there’s the food. Food seems to be more important here. It’s beautifully shown in windows and markets. Everything is fresher and better tasting than at ho me. I’ve gained five pounds since I arrived. There are a few things that bother me though. I’m still having a hard time with the language. People speak very fast and it’s hard to get them to repeat things. People, in general, are less warm here and it’s ha rd to make friends. I guess that can be true in any big city in a new country, but the French do seem to be less friendly than the people back home.2020届高二下学期英语第一次月考参考答案1—5 ACBCB 6—10 CBABC 11—15 ACBAB 16—20 AABCA21-25 DCDAB 26-30 BDAAC 31-35 DBBCD 36-40 GFAED41-45 DBCBA 46-50 ACDAB 51-55 ACDBD 56-60 BDCCA语法填空61. dishes 62. who/that 63. it 64. visiting 65. was shocked66. have become 67. affordable 68. higher 69. weight 70. for短文改错1 children改为child2 late改为later3 end前加the4 her改为him5 was改为were6 knowing改为know7 去掉had8 chat改为chatted9 in 改为on10 excited改为exciting作文Dear Sir /Madam,I’m Li Hua, a Chinese student aged 18. Y et his rich experience as a diplomat and exile made him go beyond the theme of love. His work also reflected the political struggle of the left and development of South America. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.Neruda loved the sea which he saw as creative, destructive and forever moving. I have relatives and friends deeply in debt, spending $ 12for every $ 10 they earn instead of the $ 8 you know they should be spending. When I see them, they're proudof their new whatever."What do you think of my new truck?" asked one from the driver's seat."Do you like my new shoes?" asked another on high heels."Check out my new big screen." said a third while holding the remote in his living room. We've all heard people fishing for compliments on their new toys.Every one of them was proud of what they'd financed. They seem to have bought it for the purpose of being proud, of showing off, of keeping up with the Joneses."Look at my new …?"is everybody's favorite phrase, even when the object in question isn't theirs at all and won't be new when they've finally paid for it, if they ever do.They're proud of being stupid. They think it's cool to drive the financed car, wear the financed shoes, and watch the financed TV, but to smart people, whose opinions are the only ones we should respect, these people look dumb as rocks. The Joneses, nine times out of 10, are financially stupid. That's why they have all that stuff on borrowed money. Why try to copy them? Worse, why try to impress them?
