Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.(A)What time is it? Most people are pretty accurate in their answer. And if you don’t know for sure,it’s very likely that you can find out. The re may be a watch on your wrist; there may be a clock on the wall, desk, or computer screen; or maybe you’re riding in a car that has a clock in the dashboard(仪表板).Even if you don’t have a timepiece of some sort nearby, your body keeps its own beat. Humans have an internal clock that regulates the beating of our heart, the pace of our breathing, the discharge(排出) of chemicals within our bloodstream, and many other bodily functions.Time is something from which we can’t escape. Even if we ignore it, it’s still going by, ticking away, second by second, minute by minute, hour by hour. So the main issue in using your time well is, “Who’s in charge?” We can allow t ime to slip by and let it be our enemy. Or we can take control of it and make it our ally.By taking control of how you spend your time, you’ll increase your chances of becoming a more successful student. Perhaps more importantly, the better you are at managing the time you devote to your studies, the more time you will have to spend on your outside interests. The aim of time management is not to schedule every moment so we become all saves of a timetable that governs every waking moment of the day. Instead, the aim is to permit us to make informed choices as to how we use our time. Rather than letting the day go by, largely without our awareness, what we are going to discuss next can make us better able to control time for our own purposes.65. The underl ined word “ally” in Para. 3 most likely means somebody or something that is____________.A. your slave and serves youB. your supporter and helps youB. under your control and obeys you D. under your influence and follows you66. The author intends to tell us that time ______.A. could be regulated by a timepiece such as a clock or a watchB. could be managed by the internal clock of human bodiesC. should be well managed for our own interestD. should be saved for outside interests67. In the next part, the author would most probably discuss with you ______.A. how to keep up with the timesB. how to make up for lost timeC. how to have a good timeD. how to make good use of time(B)I am a writer.I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke (唤起) an emotion,a visual image,a complex idea,or a simple truth.Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California,I've been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks.Like others.I have described it to people as "broken" English. But feel embarrassed to say that.It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than "broken",as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed,as if it lacked a certain wholeness.I've heard other terms used,"limited English,"for example. But they seem just as bad,as if everything is limited, including people's perceptions(认识)of the limitedEnglish speaker.I know this for a fact, because when l was growing up,my mother's "limited" English limited my perception of her.I was ashamed of her English.I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is,because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support her:the fact that people in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her.I started writing fiction in l985.And for reasons l won't get into today,I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with:the English she used with me,which for lack of a better term might be described as "broken".and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的)language and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure:I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show;her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.68. By saying "Language is the tool of my trade",the author means that ________.A.she uses English in foreign trade B.she is fascinated by languagesC.she works as a translator D.she is a writer by profession69. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3 ?A.Americans do not understand broken English.B.The author's mother was not respected sometimes.C.The author's mother had positive influence on her.D.Broken English always reflects imperfect thoughts.70. The author gradually realizes her mother's English is________.A.well structured B.in the old styleC.easy to translate D.rich in meaning71. What is the passage mainly about?A.The changes of the author's attitude to her mother's English.B.The limitation of the author's perception of her mother.C.The author's misunderstanding of“limited”English.D.The author's experiences of using broken English.(C)Scientists have devised(发明)a way to determine roughly where a person has lived using a strand of hair, a technique that could help track the movements of criminal suspects or unidentified murder victims. The me thod relies on measuring how chemical variations in drinking water show up in people’s hair.“You’re what you eat and drink, and that’s recorded in your hair,” said Thure Cerling, a geologist at the University of Utah. While U.S. diet is relatively identical(同一的), water supplies vary. The differences result from weather patterns. The chemical composition of rainfall changes slightly as rain clouds move. Most hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water are stable, but traces of both elements are also present as heavier isotopes. The heaviest rain falls first. As a result, storms that form overthe Pacific deliver heavier water to California than to Utah.Similar patterns exist throughout the U.S. By measuring the proportion of heavier hydrogen and oxygen isotopes(同位素)along a strand of hair, scientists can construct a geographic timeline. Each inch of hair corresponds(相当)to about two months.Cerling’s team collected tap water samples from 600 cities and constructed a map of the regional differences. They checked the accuracy of the map by testing 200 hair samples collected from 65 barber shops. They were able to accurately place the hair samples in broad regions roughly corresponding to the movement of rain systems.“It’s not good for pinpointing(精确),” Cerling said. “It’s good for eliminating many possibilities.”Told Park, a local detective, said the method has helped him learn more about an unidentified woman whose skeleton was found near Great Salt Lake. The woman was 5 feet tall. Police recovered 26 bones, a T-shirt and several strands of hair. When Park heard about the research, he gave the hair samples to the researchers. Chemical testing showed that over the two years before her death, she moved about every two months. She stayed in the Northwest, although the test could not be more specific than somewhere between eastern Oregon and western Wyoming.“It’s still a substantial area,” Park said, “But it narrows it way down for me”.72. What is the scientists’ new discovery?A. One’s hair growth has to do with the amount of water they drink.B. A person’s hair may reveal where they have lived.C. Hair analysis accurately identifies criminal suspects.D. The chemical composition of hair varies from person to person.73. What does the author mean by “You’re what you eat and drink” (Line 1, Para.3)?A. Food and drink affect one’s personality development.B. Food and drink preferences vary with individuals.C. Food and drink leave traces in one’s body tis sues(组织).D. Food and drink are similar to one’s existence.74. What did Cerling’s team produce in their research?A. A map showing the regional differences of tap water.B. A collection of hair samples from various barber shops.C. A method to measure the amount of water in human hair.D. A chart illustrating the movement of the rain system.75. What is the practical value of Cerling’s research?A. It helps analyze the quality of water in different regions.B. It helps the police determine where a crime is committed.C. It helps the police narrow down possibilities in detective work.D. It helps identify the drinking habits of the person under investigation.Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A –F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need. How They Stay Young76.________________When Dr David Weeks,a clinical neuro-psychologist at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland.wanted to look into the secrets of eternal(永久的)youth ,he advertised for subjects who looked younger than their age.An independent panel examined photographs of respondents, and selected 3,500 people who looked on average l2 to 14 years younger than their actual age to take part in the study.77.________________These subjects were studied for eight years. The main aim of the study was to discover whether environment or heredity had more effect on the ageing process. The conclusion was that genetic programming is the main factor. But the study also showed that avoiding stress can slow down the ageing process.78.________________Stress seems to have an immediate effect on appearance.A separate study of middle-aged women showed that women suffering form serious stress looked older in just a few months.Yet when the problem causing the stress was removed, they very quickly looked younger.79.________________Here is a list of the factors that Dr.Weeks found that allowed his subjects to lead less stressful lives than others.First, they tend to have happy relationships with their partners. These relationships are based on trust and empathy, and provide security and comfort when dealing with stressfulproblems.Secondly, they tended to avoid sources of hostility instead of allowing them to make them angry.80.________________Next, they seem to have a good sense of humor. They like to have fun,and are enthusiastically involved in a variety of hobbies. They also seemed less willing to conform to others’ ideas. They prefer to think for themselves. They tend to have a good attitude towards health and exercise as well. They avoid the sun,do not smoke, and eat a healthy diet.So these are the secrets of the “ super-young”:a loving relationship.Regular exercise.a variety of hobbies,a healthy diet and avoidance of stress.Section DDirections: Read the passage and answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. It's logical to suppose that things like good labor relations, good working conditions, good wages and benefits and job security motivate workers, but one expert, Fredrick Herzberg argued that such conditions do not motivate workers. They are merely satisfiers. Motivators, in contrast, include things such as having a challenging and interesting job, recognition and responsibility. However, even with the development of computers and robotics, there're always plenty of boring, repetitive and mechanical jobs and lots of unskilled people who have to do them. So how do managers motivate people in such jobs? One solution is to give them some responsibilities, not as individuals, but as a part of a team. For example, some supermarkets can buy office stuff to people who fill the shelves, and the people who work at the check out into a team, and let them decide what product lines to stock, how to display them and so on. Many people now talk about the importance of a company's shared values or culture with which all the staff can identify, for example, being the best hotel chain, or making the best, the most user-friendly or the most reliable products in a particular field. Such values are more likely to motivate workers than financial targets which automatically only concern a few people. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of such goals to go around and by definition, not all the competing companies in that industry can seriously plan to be the best.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 8 WORDS.)81: What can actually motivate workers according to Fredrick Herzberg?__________________________________________________________82: What does the speaker say about jobs in the computer era?__________________________________________________________83: What do some supermarkets do to motivate their employees?__________________________________________________________84: Why does the speaker say financial targets are less likely to motivate workers?__________________________________________________________第II卷(共45分)I. One man who is famous for his ability to write powerful and highly effective music for movies is John Williams. Mr. Williams has been writing music for movies since 1960, but he is perhaps best known for his award-winning scores for movies such as Jaws, Star Wars, and Schindler's List. Before he began writing music for the movies, Mr. Williams dreamed of being a concert pianist. He studied at both the University of California, Los Angeles and Juilliard School. During the 1950s, Mr. Williams was into jazz and he worked in New York City with many jazz artists. Later, he moved back to Los Angeles where he continued to play the piano for jazz musicians. He also got a job writing music for television shows. It was this television job that led him into movies.Throughout the 1960s, Mr. Williams wrote the music that can be heard in more than 20 movies. Most of these movies were light comedies. Then, in 1975, the director of the movie Jaws, Steven Spielberg, hired Mr. Williams. The director thought that Mr. William's music added so much to the scary (引起恐慌的)scenes of the movie that he insisted on working with Mr. Williams in all of his future movies. Other directors and Hollywood film studios also demanded to work with Mr. Williams, and his career as a composer of movie soundtracks took off. Many of these movies have soundtracks that are still available in music stores today. They include The Deer Hunter, Raiders of the Lost Ark, ET, and Jurassic Park.In 1980, Mr. Williams had another chance to expand his musical experience. He was chosen to be the new conductor for the Boston Pops Orchestra when Arthur Fiedler retired. Mr. Williams gladly accepted the position because it only required that he conduct the orchestra during the summer. This left him free to continue writing music for the movies during the rest of the year. Mr. Williams conducted the Boston Pops for more than 12 years before he decided to retire and write music full-time. Along with the many movie music scores he has written, Mr. Williams has also written two symphonies, a flute concerto, and a violin concerto. Up to now, Mr. Williams has written music for more than 60 movies. It is no wonder that he is today's most famous Hollywood composer.69. What is John Williams most famous for?A. Conducting.B. Writing classical music.(C)Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive sui t to work every day. “I was a clothes addict,” jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes---khaki pants and sports shirt---to the office. He hardly ever wears necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or “casual Friday.” “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has really becom e an everyday thing,” said business consultant Maisly Jones. Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative impact on productive. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual dress code helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”72. David Smith refers to himself as havi ng been “a clothes addict” because_______.A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirtB. he couldn’t stand a clean appearanceC. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the timeD. he didn’t want to spend much money on clothes73. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because________.A. they make him feel at ease when workingB. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothesC. he looks handsome in casual clothesD. he no longer works for any company74. According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE?A. Many employees don’t like a conservative dress code..B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.D. All the employers in the U.S are for casual office wear.75. In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned except ______.A. saving employees’ moneyB. making employees more attractiveC. improving employees’ motivationD. making employees happierSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A –F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76._________________Astronomers estimate that there are about l,100 asteroids--or space rocks--with the potential to cause a planet-wide disaster in a collision with Earth. And since large asteroids have collided withEarth many times in the past, scientists say it is certain that Earth will be hit again. It is only a question of when.77. _________________The asteroid that ended the age of the dinosaurs hit the Earth 65 million years ago.It was at least six miles(10 kilometers)wide. But smaller asteroids can also devastate (毁坏)the earth.Scientists estimate that a collision with an asteroid even one—tenth this size would kill at least 25 per cent of Earth’s population.Less than a hundred years ago,for example,an asteroid only 330 feet(100 meters)wide exploded in Siberia. It completely destroyed half a million acres of forest.78._________________Asteroids come from a belt of tens of thousands of space rocks in orbit around the sun. They normally travel between Mars and Jupiter, but some smaller rocks are affected by the gravitational pull of Mars,Jupiter or Saturn and their orbits are stretched.Sometimes this change puts them on a path that crosses Earth’s orbit. This sets up the possibility of collision with Earth.83._________________In l986,a potentially dangerous asteroid missed Earth by only six hours.Scientists only found out about the danger after it had passed. Many more asteroids have collided with Earth over the years. We can still see their marks today — large craters in the ground.79._________________NOW there is a new--found seriousness about asteroid strikes.Astronomers are engaged in a painstaking search for all asteroids that threaten Earth. And the United States has a project called NEAR that involves orbiting and studying the asteroid Eros, the second largest asteroid near Earth.Studying the composition of the asteroid provides important information hat may allow an asteroid to be exploded or knocked of course to prevent it from colliding with Earth.Section DDirections: Read the passage and answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.DIf you are invited to an American friend’s home for dinner, keep in mind these general rules for polite behavior. First of all, arrive approximately on time ( but not early). Americans expectpromptness. It is OK to be 10 or 15 minutes late, but not 45 minutes late. Dinner might be overcooked and ruined by then. When you are invited to someone’s home for a meal, it is polite to “bring a small gift”. Flowers or candy are always appropriate. If you have an attractive item made in your native country, your host and/ or hostess would certainly enjoy receiving that as a gift. Some Americans don’t know about the dietary restrictions of various ethnic and religious. Don’t make a fuss about it. If your host doesn’t say anything about what you are eating, then you shouldn’t, either. Simply eat what you can and hope that no one notices what you left. If you are questioned, you may have to admit that you don’t eat meat (or whatever), but you can also say that you have enjoyed the other foods and have had “more than enough” to eat. Don’t make the cook feel obliged to prepare something else for you. Be sure to compliment the cook on the food that you enjoyed.Don’t leave immediately after dinner, but don’t overstay your welcome, either. When your friends seem to be getting tired and running out of conversation, take their behavior as a cue to leave. The next day, call or write a thank-you note to say how much you enjoyed the evening. If you invite someone to join you for dinner in a restaurant, phone the restaurant first to find out if you need a reservation in order to avoid a long wait for a table. To make a reservation, just give your name, the number of people in your group, and the time you plan to arrive. When you invite someone to dinner, you should be prepared to pay the bill and reach for it when it arrives. However, if your companion insists on paying his or her share, don’t get into an argument about it. Some people prefer to pay their own way so t hat they don’t feel indebted, and those feelings should be respected. In most American restaurants, the waiter or waitress’ tip is not added to the bill. If the service was adequate, it is customary to leave a tip equal to about 15% of bill. In expensive restaurants, leave a bit more.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 13 WORDS.)80. When invited to an American family for dinner, the first rule of polite behavior to keep in mind isto __________________________________.81. William Thackeray, a famous British writer, said, “Life is a mirror. When you smile in front of it, it will also smile and 52 will it when you cry to it.” If you are grateful to life, it will bring you shining sunlight. If you always complain about everything, you may own 53 in the end. When we are successful, we can surely have many reasons for being grateful, but we have 54 one excuse to show ungratefulness if we fail.If each of us has an attitude of being grateful, we‟ll be able to get rid of impu lse, upset, dissatisfaction and misfortune. Edeka has tried the system at 70 of its supermarkets. It says it will introduce it at 200 others because customers like it.“At first we thought that only the young who really keep up with the latest technology would be interested, but we were wrong,” said Stefan Sewoester from IT Werke. “Almost two-thirds of the people who use the system are 40 and older,” he said.IT Werke, a computer company, is one of the pioneers of fingerprint payment software in Germany. It has helped about 150 shops, canteens and bars to put in the fingerprint scanning machines. Each costs about 2,000 euros. To sign up for the service, customers must have their fingerprints taken and leave their addresses and banking details with the shop. This is what could be done in practice,” Leonhardt said. “That comes closest to what engineers will probabl y be able to do in the future.”Invisibility is a visual illusion that the object or person is not there. Leonhardt uses the exampleof water circling around a stone. The water flows in, swirls(打漩,盘绕)around the stone and then leaves as if nothing was there.“If you replace the water with light then you would not see that there was something present because the light is guided around the person or object. You would see the light coming from the s cenery behind as if there was nothing in front,” he said.“What the Invisible Woman does is curve space around herself to bend light. What these devices would do is to mimic that curved space,” he said.Although the devices are still theoretical, Leonhardt said scientists are making advances in metamaterials —artificial materials with unusual properties that could be used to make invisibility devices.“There are advances being made in metamaterials that mean the first devices will probably be used for bend ing radar waves or the electromagnetic waves used by mobile phones,” he said. The devices could be used as protection mechanisms so the radiation emitted from mobile phones does not penetrate electronic equipment. It is guided around it.“It is very likely that the demonstration for radar would come first and very soon. To go into the visual will take some time but it is also not so far off,” Leonhardt said.61. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet. In the back of every person‟s mind is a clear vision of what he or she wants to be. There is a perfect world hidden somewhere in the brain. Tap into that vision to find your goal. Then take steps to make it a reality. This is easier than it seems. What people don‟t know is that there are personal development tools that one can use in pursuit of that goal. These are real life techniques that include time management, planning, affirmation, visualization, measuring progress and goal setting.Setting goals is the first and most important tool to learn when embarking on a personal development plan. In fact, it is the most natural thing in the world to have goals. It is what makes us move and do things. This pursuit of something is what keeps us up in our daily lives, whether it is something material, spiritual or emotional. The problem lies in making up our minds and sticking to that one goal. The mind has never been known to be constant. Each moment of the day we are thinking of new and different things, analyzing our opinions and producing new ones. This is a waste of energy, of time, and of the possibilities of human potential. It is why knowledge of these personal development tools is important. Sifting all the different and inconstant thoughts and then choosing one goal to concentrate on is the meaning of goal setting. Focusing your mind on this one goal is thefirst step in the journey of personal development. After this come the other tools: the visualization, the affirmation, the time management and planning, and then the measuring of progress. All of these personal development tools are ways of organizing the mind. When the mind is organized, a person‟s acti ons will be organized. This is the first step in making thoughts and wishes a reality.81.
