AN EXCHANGE OF GIFTS, by Diane RaynorThe following is a true experience related by a mother .It took place shortly before Christmas .This was the time of year when we moved into a cozy trailer home just outside of Redmond ,Washington ,and we were busy preparing for Christmas. All during December ,Marty seemed to be happy with thoughts of Christmas giving .He was my youngest-blonde-haired and cheerful , with the quaint habit of looking up at you ,and cocking his head to the side when you talked to him .The reason for this was that Marty was deaf in his left ear .For weeks I watched Marty as he eagerly did his daily duties .Besides helping Rich and Pam ,the other children ,with their duties ,I saw him silently collect his tiny allowance and tuck it away ,never using a penny for himself .Kenny was Marty’s best friend ,and ever since we moved next to them they were seldom apart .In the pasture separating our homes was an electric fence to keep the horses in .The boys spent a lot of time playing in the stream in the pasture ,but they were always very cautious about sliding carefully under the electric fence .Times were hard for our family .Only by constant scrimping could we get by on my meat-wrapping job .But Kenny’s family was desperately poor , and his mother was having a struggle to feed and clothe her two children .They were a good, solid family, and Kenny’s mom was a proud woman with strict rules .Our Christmas ornaments and gifts were pretty much hand crafted .One night shortly before Christmas, Marty, with his head cocked to one side said to me, “Mom, I’ve bought Kenny a Christmas gift!” I thought to myself, “So that’s what you’ve been up to.” He pulled from his pocket a small box. Inside was a pocket compass which he had bought by saving his allowance. “It’s something he has wanted for a long time.”“It’s a lovely gift, Marty, but I must talk with you. I know how Kenny’s mother feels about their property. They can barely get gifts for themselves. Kenny’s proud mother may not permit her son to receive a gift when he cannot return one.”Marty understood what I was saying, Then he said, “I know, Mom, but what if it’s a secret? What if they never find out who gave it?”Night settled in on Christmas Eve. It had rained all day and was still raining. I turned from my dinner preparations just long enough to see Marty, a coat over his pajamas and clutching the small gift, slip out of the door. He went down through the soggy pasture, slipping under the electric fence, then on to Kenny’s back porch, opening the screen door just enough to place the gift inside. Then, with a deep breathe, he press the doorbell hard and ran across the pasture as far as he could go. Suddenly he banged into the electric fence! The shock sent him reeling, and he lay stunned on the wet ground. His body tingled, and he gasped for breath. Slowly, weakly, confused andfrightened, he began the grueling trip back home.“Marty!” we all cried as he stumbled in through the door. With trembling lips he said, “I forgot about the fence, and it knocked me down.” While preparing him for bed, we found a red mark beginning to blister on his face from his mouth to his ear. With a warm cup of cocoa and comforting words, we tucked him into bed. His last words before going to sleep were, “Mom, I’m sure Kenny didn’t see me.”That Christmas Eve I went to bed unhappy and puzzled. It seemed such a cruel thing to happen to a little boy while on the purest kind of a Christmas mission---giving to others, and giving in secret, all that. I was unable to sleep!Christmas morning came. The rain had stopped, the sun began to shine, and I felt entirely different. The streak on Marty’s face was very red, but I could see that the burn was not serious. We had no sooner finished opening our gifts when our doorbell rang. Kenny excitedly rushed into the room, showing his new compass and telling of its mystery. While the boys happily chatted together, I noticed that Marty was not cocking his head, that while Kenny talked to him, Marty was listening with his deaf ear!The school nurse later reported that Marty had completed hearing in both ears. It still remains a mystery. Doctors suspect that it was the shock from the electric fence. But whatever the reason, I remain thankful for the wonderful exchange of gifts which blessed ou r Christmas Eve.。
