CS0415/24/aeLevelflex M FMP40 Guided Wave Radar Levelflex M FMP40 reduces downtime, saving company money.Company profileWorld’s leading producer of soups with plant located in Marshall, Michigan.BackgroundThe customer was previously using capaci-tance probes. The units measure how much water level is in each drum. Over time, the Teflon insulation on the capacitance probe began to allow water to enter between the rod and the Teflon. This was caused from the continual temperature change that the retort sees. It would go from seeing cold to boiling water time after time. After a period of time, the Teflon began to expand allowing water to get behind it and the unit would tell the PLC that the retort was full, even though it may not have been. This caused the system to go into alarm and a manual check was required to verify actual drum level. They manually checked the level using a bypass pipe that has a glass window. They have 24 retorts in all, so at any given time there were multiple alarms going off. This caused downtime, thus costing the plant money.Solution Endress+Hauser recommended the Level-flex M FMP40 Guided Wave Radar. Application description The machine that the FMP40’s are used on is called a retort. Sealed cans with soup are put into the retort and locked into place. Using a combination of water and steam, the soup gets cooked while in the can. The drum inside the retort spins to insure all the cans are heated at the same rate. The FMP40 is inserted in a bypass pipe moun-ted on the side of the retort.Instrument description The Levelflex M is a top-mounted, compact level transmitter that operates with microimpulse radar on the guided time-of-flight principle. Fluctuations in the density, temperature, or build-up do not influence the measurement.Measuring principle The Levelflex is a “downward-looking”Time-of-Flight (ToF) measuring system which measures the distance from the process connection to the material surface. An electrical pulse is launched and guided down the probe. The pulses are reflected by the product surface, received by the electronics, evaluated and converted into level information.Result The Levelflex uses a simple stainless steel probe and eliminated the Teflon all together. The units were drop in replacement, thus no system modification was required. Since the installation, there has not been even one alarm! They replace 2 or 4 units every quarter or when the budget allows. The customer has installed flow and pressu-re products in their plant. They are looking into installing more analytical products in the future. Fill up the fresh water solution tank with tap water that is 120o F-135o F (49o C-57o C) and approved carpet cleaning chemical if you are not pre-spraying your chemical on the carpet.2. Attach two 12 gauge extension cords, included, (one cord for non-heated models) to each of the pigtail cords located on the lower backside of the unit. The red pigtail powers the heater while the black pigtail powers the vacuum motors and pump.3. Plug each extension cord into a SEPARATE and grounded 20 amp wall socket circuits, when this is accomplished the green indicator light will be lit (on heated models).4. Attach the hose system to the unit and to your carpet wand.5. Turn the heater and the pump to the “ON” position, (only pump on non-heated models) when the heater is on the orange indicator light on the switch panel will be lit.6. With the solution line attached to the wand and the machine, prime the pump by squeezing the trigger on the wand releasing the water (hold wand tip over solution tank to put water back into solution tank). This will pump water into the heater and get any air out of the solution line. Let the heater heat up. This will take 3 to 5 minutes. *Prime pump on 400 p.s.i. models with prime hose (included).7. Turn vacuum switches to the “ON” position one at a time to begin cleaning.8. Anyone designated to operate this equipment must, without fail, read and thoroughly understand all instructions and precautions prior to use.9. Never use equipment out of doors or in the rain.10. Never use flammable or explosive materials in or around this equipment11. When recovery tank is full, empty by using drain hose at the rear of the machine. If a pail is used to empty the recovery tank, do not use the same pail to fill the solution tank as this can result in putting dirt and grit into the solution line that can plug filters, orifices, and generally degrade the solution line system (do not reuse solution).12. To empty solution tank, detach the wand from the end of the vacuum hose and insert the vacuum hose into the solution tank. Turn the vacuum switches to “ON” position and transfer solution to vacuum tank and dispose of as outlined in #11. Clean vacuum stack filter at this time.
