stage and said, “ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your enthusiastic support. I am afraid that due to illness, the

lady whom you've all e to hear will not be performing tonight. However, we have found a suitable substitute we

hope will provide you with parable entertainment.”The crowd groaned in disappointment and failed to hear the

announcer mention the stand-in's name. The environment turned from excitement to disappointment. The stand-in

performer gave the performance everything she had. When she finished, there was nothing but an unfortable

silence. No one applauded. Suddenly, from the balcony, a little boy stood up and shouted, “Mummy, I think you

A

The German city of Hamburg has announced plans to bee car-free within the next two decades. It is an ambitious

idea, but city officials obviously feel that the personal motorcar does not fulfill a function that walking, biking and

taking public transport cannot. The goal of Hamburg's project is to replace roads with a green network, which will

allow people to navigate through the city without the use of cars.

Banishing the car from urban areas is being a mon trend in many European cities. London imposes a “congestion

charge”on private vehicles entering the city centre during rush hours. Copenhagen is building bicycle for

reading worrying make may bined developments These centre. city the from out radiating superhighways

driving enthusiasts. Is the time of the personal car over?

In the century since the Ford Model T was introduced in 1908, global vehicle numbers have swollen to well over a

billion. But according to recent research, the growth may have stopped.

According to Professor Michael Sivak, at the University of Michigan, “motorization”in the US

might have reached a peak in 2008, and that the figures have been on the decline since.

“New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, each have more than thirty percent of households without a light

duty vehicle,”says Sivak. In fact, the figures show that fifty-six percent of households in New York (which top the

list) don't have a car. “I think that will be surprising to most people. It was surprising to me, and I am in the

business.”

Sivak thinks a number of factors could be contributing to the trend, including working from home and the

movement of populations back to city centers. In China, Beijing and Shanghai are looking at plans to limit the

number of new vehicles being registered to control growth. It's a movement more cities are looking towards,

particularly in the US.

The Most Wonderful Islands

The Palm Islands are the largest artificial islands in the world and are under construction in Dubai, in the United

Arab Emirates. They are being developed as tourist, leisure, and residential resorts, and will increase the coastline

of the country by 120 kilometres.

construction started in 2001. After four years of planning and careful consideration of the environmental issues,

Dutch engineers with experience of reclaiming land from the sea were employed in the building of the first two

islands. The site for all three islands is an area of the sea where the water is not very deep. Sand is taken from the

ion site. Although the shallow water facilitates this process, the islands are

seabed and sprayed into the construct

still very exposed to the currents and tidal movements of the sea. Rocks are used to hold the sand in place resulting

in a large crescent(月状的)structure. This acts as a breakwater and protects the islands from the sea. The first two islands are in the shape of date palm trees and consist of a trunk and 17 frond, or leaves ing off the

trunk. The first island, named Palm Jumeirah, has three five-star hotels in the trunk, and luxury homes in the leaves.

It is astonishing that when these homes went on sale in 2004, they were all sold within three days. The second palm, Jebel Ali, was started in 2002 and is designed to be an entertainment centre. Six marinas(小游艇船坞) are planned, with a water theme park, and homes built on stilts(桩柱) in the water.

The Palm Deira planned to be the largest of the three islands, with a length of 14 km and a width of 8.5 km, an area

larger than the city of Paris. It will consist of residential properties, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and

clubs. These will be open to both residents and tourists.

More artificial islands, the World Islands, are now being constructed near the Palm Jumeirah. They consist of 300

private islands grouped into the shape of the continents of the world and will be used for estates, private homes,

munity islands, and resorts.

Unquestionably, these artificial islands are one of the wonders of the modern world. They will also maintain

Dubai's status as one of the leading tourist destinations in the region.

25.According to the passage, all the following are right EXCEPT ________.

A.Some Dutch engineers are experienced in reclaiming land from the sea

B.The islands are being built in the shallow water of the sea

C.All the luxury homes on Palm Jumeirah were sold

D.The World Islands are bigger than the Palm Jumeirah

26.The underlined word “facilitates”in the second paragraph probably means ________. A.holds back B.makes easier

D .leads to

C.slows down

What is the passage written for?

27.To introduce the wonderful artificial islands. A.B.To show how to build artificial islands.:][来源C.To offer a travel service for tourists.

D.To prove the Palm Islands are the largest artificial islands in the world.

“Plants were expected to get larger with increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, but changes in temperature,

humidity and nutrient availability seem to have trumped the benefits of increased carbon dioxide,”said researchers

from the National University of Singapore.

45 percent of the species studied now reach smaller adult sizes than they did in the past. The researchers pointed

out that warmer temperatures and changing habitats, caused by climate change, are possible reasons for shrinking

creatures.

are

others while smaller getting are organism some why or involved, mechanisms the know yet not do e “W

unaffected,”the researchers said. “Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we

can't yet quantify.”

The change was big in cold-blooded animals. Only two decades of warmer temperatures were enough to make

reptiles (爬行动物) smaller. An increase of 1 degree centigrade caused nearly a 10 percent increase in metabolism

Greater use of energy resulted in tiny tortoises and little lizards. Fish are smaller now too. Though

overfishing has played a part in reducing numbers, experiments show that warmer temperatures also stop fish

growth. There is a recent report on warmer temperatures' negative effects on plankton (浮游生物), the base of the

marine ecosystem.

Warm-blooded animals weren't immune from the size change caused by climate change. Many birds are now

smaller. Mammals have been miniaturized too. Soay sheep are thinner. Red deer are weaker. And polar bears are

smaller, pared with historical records. This is not the first time this has happened in Earth's history.

55 million years ago, a warming event similar to the current climate change caused bees, spiders and ants to shrink

by 50 to 75 percent over several thousand years. That event happened over a long time than the current climate

change.

The speed of modern climate change could mean organisms may not respond or adapt quickly enough, especially

those with long generation times. So, it is likely that more negative influences of climate change will be shown in

future.

28.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. Why do some species bee smaller?

B. How does temperature change in Earth's history?

C. Climate change has many negative effects

D. Species bee smaller as climate warms

29.The underlined word “trumped”in the first paragraph can be replaced by ________.

A. beaten

B. increased

D. equaled

C. strengthened

30.Researchers from the National University of Singapore believe that ________.

A. too many studies on animals' size have been done

B. all the animals on the earth have bee smaller

C. how climate change affects animals' size has not been found clearly

D. climate change has more negative effects on warm-blooded animals

31.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Bird have suffered more from climate change than fish.

B. Climate change have even affected plankton negatively.

C. Cold-blooded animals bee smaller because of the lack of food.

D. The warming event has never happened in Earth' s history before.

Homework and stress are rarely reduced inside the classroom. Meanwhile, outside the classroom, the pressure is on

to find scholarships for college.

According to Braintrack, a higher education database with worldwide reach, more than 3 billion US dollars(18

billion yuan) in private scholarships are awarded to college students annually. Average awards range from $2,000 to

$3,000.

The scholarship application process is similar to the college application process: forms to be pleted, test scores and

transcripts to be sent, essays to be written and often interviews to be prepared for.

A few great places to start looking for scholarships are:. fastweb. , .finaid. org and . collegexpress.. Check out the

annual scholarship guidebooks Scholarships, Grants & Prizes by Peterson's and The Ultimate Scholarship Book:

Billions of Dollars in Scholarships, Grants and Prizes by Gen Tanabe and Kelly Tanabe.

Be selective. Thoroughly research the qualifications required by each of the scholarships. Don't waste your time

applying for those that are need-based if you can't produce the appropriate documents.

Research past recipients(接受者). Check out the websites of the organizations sponsoring the scholarships. Many

post the biographies of past recipients. You don't need to have cured cancer, but if you don't think your résumé(履历) measures up to the past winners', you might be better served by moving onto the next scholarship on your list.

Prepare for the interview.

You'll want to dazzle them with your personality, but above all you'll want to be prepared. Find someone you trust

to conduct a similar interview with you—someone who will be honest with you and provide valuable suggestions.

Let your personality shine through in your essays. The essays are the best way for students to share

who they are,

where they've e from, what they've overe and so on. Tell your story in an interesting and persuasive way. And if you

do have an interview, send a thank-you note afterward.

Dear Editor,

I'm sorry to occupy your precious time, and I really want to tell you anything about the problem of some people

keeping too many pets nowadays. I take the problem more and more seriously for the following reason. First of all,

as it is known to people, pets make so much noise that trouble residents a lot. What's more, it is widely accepted

that animal waste pollutes the environment, where makes people quite unfortable. Many owners like taking their

pets to public place where they may frighten children or even bite people. The mostly important is that pets can

spread some diseases and this has attracted much attention. Take all these factors into consideration, I sincerely

hope that I can get help from you and expect the media do something for this.

由题干中的“February”可将答案锁定在“February 6th”的话题“An Update on the Costwold Canals”中。 再结合“I was planning to have dinner that very night.”

Secret codes (密码)keep messages private。Banks, companies, and government agencies use secret codes in doing business, especially when information is sent by computer. People have used secret codes for thousands of years. 36 Code breaking never lags(落后) far behind code making. The science of creating and reading coded messages is called cryptography. There are three main types of cryptography. 37 For example, the first letters of “My elephant eats too many eels” Spell out the hidden message “Meet me.” 38 You might represent each letter with a number, for example. Let’s number the letters of the alphabet, in order, from 1 to 26. If we substitut e a number for each letter, the message “Meet me” would read “13 5 5 20 13 5.” A code uses symbols to replace words, phrases, or sentences. To read the message of a real code, you must have a code book. 39 For example, “bridge” might stand for “meet” and “out” might stand for “me.” The message “Bridge out” would actually mean “Meet me.”40 However, it is also hard to keep a code book secret for long. So codes must be changed frequently. A. It is very hard to break a code without the code book. B. In any language, some letters are used more than others. C. Only people who know the keyword can read the message. D. As long as there have been codes, people have tried to break them. E. You can hide a message by having the first letters of each word spell it out. F. With a code book, you might write down words that would stand for other words. G. Another way to hide a message is to use symbols to stand for specific letters of the alphabet. A Heroic Driver Larry works with Transport Drivers, Inc. 2015年高考全国卷2英语试题及答案(word精校版) 含详细解析 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分听力(共两节,满分30分)略 第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) A My color television has given me nothing but a headache. I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble. 21. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set? A.He got an older model than he had expected. B.He couldn’t return it when it was broken. C.He could have bought it at a lower price. D.He failed to find any movie shows on it. 22. Which of the following an best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1? A.ended all their programs
