So cool!After that, we heard some bright, cheerful notes. Angela shouted out "piano!" and she was right. I'm not that surprised she knew it since Angela takes piano lessons after school. I tried piano once but I found it kind of hard to make my fingers move that quickly between the keys. Pianists are really talented!The sound that came next was sort of mellow and smooth. I wasn't sure but I took a guess that it was a saxophone. Yes! Mrs. Roberts said I got it. She told us the saxophone is part of the woodwind family along with instruments like the clarinet and flute. I don't know anyone who plays sax but I've heard it in jazz music before. It has such a unique, almost human-like sound.We kept going through different instrument samples. Violin, trumpet, drums, cello. I got most of them but there were a couple I mixed up, like the oboe and clarinet. They sound pretty similar to me. I need to practice identifying those woodwind instruments better.After going through loads of different solo instruments, Mrs. Roberts played a whole song for us to listen to. It had probably 10 or more instruments playing together! She asked us to try and pick out the different sections like the strings, brass, and percussion. At first it just sounded like a big jumble to my ears. But the more I focused, the more I could start to hear the different layers and textures. And the drums and cymbals were driving the whole thing forward with their rhythms. Apparently, the loud noises from firecrackers and drum beating are meant to scare off evil spirits and bring good luck.We learned that each year is associated with one of 12 different animals in the Chinese zodiac. 2024 will be the Year of the Dragon which is considered the luckiest and most powerful sign. I was born in 2012, so I'm a Dragon! No wonder I'm so awesome. Just kidding again!As part of our in-class assignment, we had to find out our Chinese zodiac animal by looking at a chart then write a few sentences describing the personality traits associated with that sign. My teacher, Ms. Johnson, makes it fun though with games and activities to practice.One of the first new topics we covered was writing friendly letters. We learned the proper format for a letter, including the heading, greeting, body, and closing. Then we wrote letters to pen pals from another school. I wrote to a boy named Jacob who lives in Canada. In my letter, I introduced myself and my family, described my hometown, and asked him questions about his life and interests. A few weeks later, I received Jacob's letter in the mail! It was so exciting. He told me all about hockey (a big sport in Canada) and invited me to visit during the winter to try skating on a frozen lake. How cool would that be?Speaking of cool, we spent a whole unit learning about the Arctic region – the geography, climate, animals, and indigenous cultures. We read informational texts, watched videos, and even did a virtual tour of an igloo. My favorite part was the Arctic animal research project. I chose to study polar bears. Did you know their fur isn't actually white? It's see-through and looks white because it refracts visible light. Crazy, right? I made a poster with all kinds of fun facts like that and presented it to the class. Public speaking can be nerve-wracking, but Ms. Johnson gave me feedback on how to improve my confidence.Another highlight was our poetry unit. We analyzed different types of poems and learned about figurative language like similes, metaphors, and imagery. Then we got to write our own poems using those techniques. Mine was about autumn, comparing the changing leaves to a colorful sunset. I worked really hard on making my descriptions vivid and creative. Ms. Johnson even asked if she could post my poem on the classroom "Author's Corner" board!In addition to reading, we've been focusing a lot on our writing skills. We've been learning about writing different kinds of essays and stories. Mrs. Thompson said we're going to start a new unit all about descriptive writing. I think that means we'll learn how to describe things in a really detailed way using lots of adjectives and imagery.To kick things off, Mrs. Thompson had us do a fun activity. She brought in a bunch of random objects and put them all in a big basket up at the front of the class. Then we each got to pick one object from the basket and spend 10 minutes just observing it closely and writing down as many descriptive words and phrases about it as we could.I picked this really neat looking seashell. Miranda picked a fuzzy teddy bear and used words like "plush", "cuddly", and "disheveled" to describe its worn but cozy look. Jake had some sort of gadgety thing with gears and wrote all these great mechanical words like "cogs", "sprockets", and "clockwork". Listening to everyone's creative descriptions was really interesting.Then Mrs. Thompson gave us a quick lesson on using vivid sensory details in our writing. She explained how using words that appeal to the five senses (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) can make your descriptions feel more lifelike and immersive for the reader. We practiced looking at a picture of a bustling city street and brainstorming descriptive words related to each of the senses that could bring that scene to life. Holding it up to my eye, I was met with a dazzling burst of color - bright greens, fiery oranges, and cool cerulean patterns danced and shifted with the slightest rotation. The plastic tube was smooth and slightly warm against my fingertips, while the beads inside clinked together in a delicate tinkling chorus like wind chimes caught in a gentle breeze. I could make out the sharp, almost cloying scent of craft glue that sealed the mirrors and colored caps in place. Endlessly hypnotic, the kaleidoscope seemed to contain whole new vibrant worlds within its compact cylinder.I had a lot of fun with that one! Playing around with descriptive language and painting little word pictures is a nice creative challenge. I'll have to keep practicing writing like that.
