AThe easy way out isn‟t always the easiest. I learned that lesson whe n I decided to treat Doung, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dong loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough(面团)covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work, I went on preparing the rest of the meal and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the windows to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in out rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermenting yeast (酵母)made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the “living thing”was and why it was there. I don‟t know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing---Doug or me.21. The writer‟s purpose in writing this story is ___________A. to show the easiest way out of a difficultyB. to describe the trouble facing a newly married womanC. to tell an interesting experienceD. to explain the difficulty of learning to cook from books22. Why did the woman's attempt at making the bread turn out to be unsuccessful?A. The canned orange had gone bad.B. She did not follow the directions closely.C. The cookbook was hard to understand.D. She didn‟t use the right kind of flour.23. What made the dough in the bin look frightening?A. The rising and falling movement.B. The strange-looking marks.C. Its shape.D. Its size.24. When Doug went out the third time, the woman looked out of the window because she was ______________.A. surprised at his being interested in the binB. curious to know what disturbed himC. unhappy that he didn't enjoy the mealD. afraid that he would discover her secretBEverybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money? As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it‟s not easy to change later in life.Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail. The ant—works firstJust like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don‟t care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest(投资) in some funds and stocks with low risk. The cricket—fun firstThe cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn‟t think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance. The snail—lives under pressureThe snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans (贷款)from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury(奢华的) houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.25. .People with the character of the snail would like to _______.A. enjoy life at the moment without thinking much about the futureB. live a luxury life at all costsC. put work before everything else.D. take the risk of investing a large sum of money26. Our beliefs and values are affected by the following except ______.A. societyB.moneyC. educationD. our family27. This passage mainly talks about _______.A. the reaction between man and insectsB. the problems with dealing with moneyC. the insects in natureD. the spending nature of people28. Which of the following has the character that the author prefers?A. The antsB. The cricketC. The snailD. None of the aboveCThe Hearst CastleHearst Castle is a park on the central California coast and a National Historic Landmark. If you are quite interested in wine, which tour will you choose?A. Tour Two.B. Tour One.C. Tour Four.D. Tour Three.30. If a couple take Tour One with their 5-year-old son, how much will they pay for the tickets?A. $36.B. $60C. $48.D. $75.31. Which of the following is the available time to book tickets by phone?A. At 8 am on Monday in February.B. At 6 pm on Saturday in October.C. At 7 pm on Friday in September.D. At 9 am on Sunday in March.DMy students often tell me they don‟t have “enough time” to do all their schoolwork. My reply is oftenbrief-You have as much time as the president. I usually carry on a bit about there being 24 hours in the day for everyone, and suggest that “not enough time” is not an acceptable explanation of not getting something done.Once in graduate school, I tried to excuse myself to one of my professors by saying that I was working hard. His answer to me was, “That‟s irrele vant. What‟s important is the quality of your work.” Since then I have had time to think about the “hard worker” dodge (伎俩), and I have come to some conclusions — all relevant to the issue of how much time we have.If you analyze the matter, you can identify two parts of the problem: There is, of course, the matter of “time”, which we can think of as fixed. Then there is th e problem of “work” during that time. But, as my professor suggested, it‟s not how hard one works but the quality of the product that is important. That led me to a new idea: the quality of the work. That concept is perhaps best explained by a sign I once saw on the wall in someone‟s office---Don‟t work harder but w ork smarter. There‟s a lot of sense in that idea.If you can‟t get more time, and few of us can, the only solution is to improve the quality of the work. That means thinking of ways to get more out of the same time than we might otherwise get. That should lead us to an analysis of our work habits. Since “work” for students usually means “homework”, the expression “work habits” should be read as “study habits”.Then, as a smart student, you will seek to improve those skills that you use in study, chiefly reading and writing. If you learn to read better and write better, there are big benefits that pay off in all your studies.32. From the passage, we know that the author is ______ .A. a poetB. a editorC. an educatorD. an director33. We can infer from the first two paragraph that we students _____ .A. have enough timeB. can meet the presidentC. get something done wellD. should accept the explanation34.

AWhen my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents. The third Saturday in December Mark said he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went in while I waited and watched in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (交款处) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding his basket, tears falling down his face. Then a surprising thing happened. A woman came up to Mark and took him in her arms. "You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you," said the woman. "It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. I only ask that one day you will pass it on. When you grow up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help others, 1 know you will feel as good about it as I do now."Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the checkout counter as fast as he could. That year we all enjoyed our gifts almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.I would like to say '"thank you" to that very kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in the fire. A big supermarketBWhich comes first, happiness or money? Are richer people happier? And if so, how do people get much richer? A recent study could tell you the answer. The study looked into thousands of teenagers and found that those who felt better about life as young adults tended to have higher incomes by the time they turned 29. Those who were happiest earned an average of $8,000 more than those who were the most depressed. The researchers, from University College London and the University of Warwick, say that very gloomy teens, no matter how tall or smart they were, earned 10% less than their peers, while the happier ones earned up to 30% more.Happier teenagers have an easier time getting through school, college and a job interview, chiefly because they always feel better about life. It may also be true that happier people find it easier to make friends, who are often the key to homework help or networking.A report in June suggested that professional respect was more important than dollars in terms of workplace happiness. In August, scientists announced that they had found the gene for happiness in women. Alas, the same gene doesn’t appear to have the same effect on men. And in October researchers in the UK and in the US announced that people who eat seven portions of fruit and vegetables a day report being the happiest. The big question is: if it really is true that happier kids end up being wealthier kids, is it necessary for parents to get their kids to do the homework? The fact is that no homework will make kids happy but surely hurt their grades. Studies do show, after all, that more education leads to better-paid jobs, which may give us a deep thought.“These findings show that the teenagers’ happiness is important to their future success,” one of the report’s authors writes. “But what is the most important is that we should find a way to help children gain more satisfaction from doing schoolwork.”25. What conclusion can the researchers draw from the recent study?A. Wealth has nothing to do with happiness at all.B. Money can make people become happier.C. Happy teenagers grow up to be wealthier.D. Schoolwork can help teens achieve success.26. The main reason why happier people have more chances to succeed is that ________.A. they are hopeful and optimistic about their lifeB. they are good at doing their schoolworkC. they are easy to communicate with othersD. they eat much more fruit and vegetables a day27. The underlined word “gloomy” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.A. wealthyB. gloriousC. happyD. upset28. What can be the best title for the text?A. The way to educate kids.B. And although these things are very important in their own way, sometimes it can be helpfulto get some distance and think about other things. V olunteering allows you to do this. It lets you focus on others that are worth doing. Finally, volunteering can help save you from being bored-you have a good time and keep busy by volunteering.29.
