OneBirds are famous for carrying things around. Some, like homing pigeons, can be trained to deliver messages and packages.Other birds unknowingly carry seeds that cling to them for the ride.Canadian scientists have found a worrisome, new example of the power that birds have to spread stuff around.Way up north in the Canadian Arctic, seabirds are picking up dangerous chemicals in the ocean and delivering them to ponds near where the birds live. Some 10,000 pairs of the birds, called fulmars, a kind of Arctic seabird, make their nests on Devon Island, north of the Arctic Circle. The fulmars travel some 400 kilometers over the sea to find food. When they return home, their droppings end up all around their nesting sites, including in nearby ponds.Previously, scientists noticed pollutants arriving in the Arctic with the wind.Salmon also carry dangerous chemicals as the fish migrate between rivers and the sea.The bodies of fish and other meat-eaters can build up high levels of the chemicals. To test the polluting power of fulmars, researchers collected samples of deposit from 11 ponds on Devon Island. In ponds closest to the colony, the results showed there were far more pollutants than in ponds less affected by the birds. The pollutants in the ponds appear to come from fish that fulmars eat when they're out on the ocean.People who live, hunt, or fish near bird colonies need to be careful, the researchers say.The birds don't mean to cause harm, but the chemicals they carry can cause major problems.Questions 9 to 12 are based on the passage you have just TwoIn recent years, the death rate among American centenarians—people who have lived to age 100 or older— has decreased, dropping 14 percent for women and 20 percent for men from 2023 to 2023.The leading causes of death in this age group are also changing. In 2023, the top five causes of death for centenarians were heart disease, stroke, flu, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. But by 2023, the death rate from Alzheimer's disease for this age group had more than doubled—increasing from 3.8 percent to 8.5 percent—making the progressive brain disease the second leading cause of death for centenarians. One reason for the rise in deaths from Alzheimer's disease in this group may be that developing this condition remains possible even after people beat the odds of dying from other diseases such as cancer.People physically fit enough to survive over 100 years ultimately give in to diseases such as Alzheimer's which affects the mind and cognitive function. In other words, it appears that their minds give out before their bodies do.On the other hand, the death rate from flu dropped from 7.4 percent in 2023 to 4.1 percent in 2023.That pushed flu from the third leading cause of death to the fifth.Overall, the total number of centenarians is going up.In 2023, there were 72,197 centenarians, compared to 50,281 in 2023.But because this population is getting larger, the number of deaths in this group is also increasing— 18,434 centenarians died in 2023, whereas 25,914 died in 2023.Questions 13 to 15 are based on the passage you have just I think what we need to do is consider a definition.I'm going to define what love is but then most of the experiments I'm going to talk about are really focused more on attraction than love. And I'm going to pick a definition from a former colleague, Robert Sternberg, who is now the dean at Tufts University but was here on our faculty at Yale for nearly thirty years. And he has a theory of love that argues that it's made up of three components: intimacy, passion, and commitment, or what is sometimes called decision commitment. And these are relatively straightforward. He argued that you don't have love if you don't have all three of these elements.Intimacy is the feeling of closeness, of connectedness with someone, of bonding.Operationally, you could think of intimacy as you share secrets, you share information with this person that you don't share with anybody else.Okay.That'rmatio.tha.i sn'.share.wit.othe.people.The second element is passion.Passion is the drive that leads to romance. You can think of it as physical attraction. And Sternberg argues that this is a required component of a love relationship. The third element of love in Sternberg's theory is what he calls decision commitment, the decision that one is in a love relationship, the willingness to label it as such, and a commitment to maintain that relationship at least for some period of time.Sternberg would argue it's not love if you don't call it love and if you don't have some desire to maintain the relationship. So if you have all three of these, intimacy, passion and commitment, in Sternberg's theory you have love. Now what's interesting about the theory is what do you have if you only have one out of three or two out of three. What do you have and how is it different if you have a different two out of three? What's interesting about this kind of theorizing is it gives rise to many different combinations that can be quite interesting when you break them down and start to look them carefully. So what I've done is I've taken Sternberg's three elements of love, intimacy, passion and commitment, and I've listed out the different kinds of relationships you would have if you had zero, one, two or three out of the three elements.Questions 16 to 18 are based on the recording you have just heard.Questio.16.Wha.doe.th.speake.sa.abou.mos.o.th.experiment.mentione.i.h I am Elizabeth Hoffler, Master of Social Work.I am a social worker, a lobbyist, and a special assistant to the executive director at the National Association of Social Workers.Today we are going to be talking about becoming a social worker.Social work is the helping profession. Its primary mission is to enhance human well-being and help meet thebasic needs of all people, with a particular focus on those who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. We often deal with complex human needs.Social work is different from other professions, because we focus on the person and environment. We deal with the external factors that impact a person's situation and outlook. And we create opportunity for assessment and intervention, to help clients and communities cope effectively with their reality and change that reality when necessary. In thousands of ways social workers help other people, people from every age, every background, across the country.Wherever needed, social workers come to help. The most well-known aspect of the profession is that of a social safety net.We help guide people to critical resources and counsel them on life-changing decisions. There are more than 600,000 professional social workers in the country, and we all either have a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, or a PhD in Social Work. There are more clinically trained social workers than clinically trained psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses combined.Throughout this series you will learn more about the profession, the necessary steps to get a social work degree, the rich history of social work, and the many ways that social workers help others.Later in this series, you will hear from Stacy Collins and Mel Wilson, fellow social workers at the National Association of Social Workers.Stacy is going to walk you through the step-by-step process of becoming a social worker, and Mel will tell you about the range of options you have once you get your social work degree, as well as the high standards of responsibility he social workers must adhere to.The National Association of Social Workers represents nearly 145,000 social workers across the country. Our mission is to promote, protect, and advance the social work profession. We hope you enjoy this series about how you can make a difference by becoming a social worker.Next, we are going to talk about choosing social work.Questions 19 to 22 are based on the recording you have just to talk about what happens when celebrity role models get behind healthy habits, but at the same time, promote junk food.Currently, there's mounting criticism of Michelle Obama's “Let's Move!”campaign, which fights childhood obesity by encouraging youngsters to become more physically active, and has signed on singer Beyoncéand basketball player Shaquille O'Neal, both of whom also endorse sodas, which are a major contributor to the obesity epidemic. Now there's a lot more evidence of how powerful a celebrity— especially a professional athlete— can be in influencing children's behavior. In a report published by the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University, researchers studied 100 professional athletes and their endorsement contracts. The team focused on athletes since they are theoretically the best role models for active, healthy lifestyles for children. After sorting the deals by category, they determined that among the 512 brands associated with the athletes, most involved sporting goods, followed closely by food and beverage brands.Sports drinks, which are often high in sugar and calories made up most ofthe food and drink deals, with soft drinks and fast food filling out the remainder.Of the 46 beverages endorsed by professional athletes, 93% relied exclusively on sugar for all of their calories. It's no surprise that high-profile athletes can influence children's eating behaviors, but the scientists were able to quantify how prevalent these endorsements are in the children's environment.Advertisements featuring professional athletes and their endorsed products tend to get impressive exposure on TV, radio, in print and online. And in 2023, the researchers reported that children ages 12 to 17 saw more athlete-endorsed food and beverage brand commercials than adults. One reason any campaign wants a popular celebrity spokesperson is because kids are attracted to them no matter what they are doing. We can't expect kids to turn off that admiration when the same person is selling sugar. At best, kids might be confused. At worst, they'll think the messages about soda are the same as the messages about water, but those two beverages aren't the same.If children are turning to athletes as role models, it's in their best interest if their idols are consistent.Consistent messaging of positive behaviors will show healthier lifestylesfor kids to follow.Questions 23 to 25 are based on the recording you have just Unit1I am now a fourth-year student at college, but I can never forget my freshman year here. In general, it is a time filled with anticipation, some anxiety, and wonderful discoveries.College is a lot different from high school. Your freshman experience will definitely make an impression on you. So, what can you expect as you head off into the wonderful world of higher education? The first thing you’ll notice is the workload. It will b e heavier than you ever experienced before. The major challenges of college work are the large amount of reading and writing, and the short deadlines. A related effect that can be brought on by the workload is doubt, frustration, and possibly loneliness. Y ou’ll be away from the comforts and friendships your home provided for you over the previous years.During the freshman year, you’ll be making a lot of new friends. But you should continue to be yourself. Select your friends with the same care and patience you have always shown. Believe it or not, your college friendships will be among the most satisfying and long-term of your life. It’s always exciting to discover how wonderfully diverse college relationships can be.You’ll also be on your own —you’ll be your own boss 24 hours a day, so to speak. But, remember, with freedom comes responsibility. You should always remember that you are at college with an anticipated mission. Don’t waste your time on meaningless things.During the freshman year, you may even start thinking about your future. Maybe a certain professor is especially inspiring. Perhaps your school has some great research going on. If some area of study attracts you, find out all you can about it. It might be the beginning of your lifetime career. Going to college is not just to get a degree — it is to find out who you really are and what you are really made for.我现在四分之一岁的学生,但我永远不会忘记我的一年级在这里。

Listening in "It's not enough to ask what successful people are like、、、It is only by asking where they are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeed and who doesn't" This is the basic idea of an intriguing book called Outliers, by the American journalist Malelorn Gladwell. The book explores the factorswhich contribute to people who are extremely successful in their careers, for example, the role the family , culture and friend play、Gladwell examines the causes of why the majority of Canada ice hokey players are born in the first few monthsof the calender year, what the founder of Microsoft Bill Gates did to achieve his extraordinary success, and why the Beaties managed to redefine the whole of popular music in thel960s、Gladwell points out that the youth hockey league in Canada recruits from January the first, so that players born early in the year are bigger, stronger and better athletes than others born later in the year> And because they have this advantageat the start of their sports career ,they * re given extra coaching, and so there's a greater chance that they*11 be picked for an elite hockey tearn in the future、He calls this phenomenon accumulative advantage (积累优势),a bit like the idea that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Success depends on the process by which talented athletes areidentified as much as it does on their own abilities. Another aspect which contributes to success is thelOOOO hour rule、Great success demands an enormous amount of time for practise and training、For example, the Beaties performed live in Ikimburg Germany more thanl200times over four years, much morethan thelOOOO hours Gladwell claim is necessary for great success> So by the time they returned to England, they had developed their talente and sounded completely different from any other groupIn the same way,Bill Gates had thousands of hours1 worth of programming because he had access to a computer at his high school、He also became a teenager just at the right time to take advantage of the latest developments in computer technology、Outliers has met with extraordinary sucess, matched only by Gladwell1s own career for25 years in journalism、As a result, many cities have seen it as an autobiography, in which the writer appears to be apologizing for his own personal achievements、But the ides that you have to be born at the right moment,in the right place and in the right faiidly,Eind then you have to work really hard is a thought-provoking way of revisiting our traditional view of genius and great achievement、It's certainly worth reading,as long as you don't take it too seriously、Listening in2P:Hi,we are talking about typical working hours in the US and in Brazi1Eric、、、um、、、you1re from the States, tell me what are the typical working hours in the States?E:Er、、、traditionally people go to work at9o r clock in the morning and they finish at about5,so sort of a9to5、P:And,and Penny I、、、I know you're English but you work in Brazil, what are the hours in Brazil?Penny:Um varies slightly, sometimes you can start um on an earlyshift,say,8o‘clock in the morning to5 um or9 until6、B ut in Brazil often people will work longer hours than this、P:Right, right ok、And what kind of clothes do you wear?I mean do you dress up formally or in a relaxed way?E:It used to be that you would wear a jacket and tie to work for、、、for men but er nowadays an open shirt is ok、You don r t necessarily have to wear a tie and sometimes on a Friday you cam wear a pair of jeans to work. P:Oh,right the dress down Friday?E:The dress down Friday that's right、P:Does that st订1 happen?E:Yes, yes sure it does、P:And how about in Brazil?Penny:Um, it"s fairly casual, quite informal,um I mean you need to look neat and tidy obviously, but you,you have your own choice rely on what you would wear, there are no rules and regulations、It"s important to look smart but comfortable、P:Right, yeah do you have meal breaks or is that、、、you just fit in meals when you canor、、、?E:Lunch,1unch is usually an hour sometimes alittle shorter if you have to do a lot of work from your desk、P:Yeah, how about Brazil?Penny:That's the same, aboutan hour、P:And,and with overtime,I mean,if you、、、I mean you're obviously contracted to do a certain number of hours. What happens if you do more than the hours that you、、、that's in you、、、that are in yourcontract?E: I have to meike a fairly um strict record of my hours so if I go beyond5 o1clock on most days I put in for overtime、P:Right、E:And it's、、、the first hour is one of overtime and then there1s I thinkl5minute periods after thatSo I could work an hour and a quarter、P:And you* d be paid for the quarter hours?E: That's right,by the quarter hour. P:How about in Brazil?Penny:It's,it's a lot looser in Brazi1 actually> We we often end up doing overtime but unfortimately not paid. P: Fine、That"s hard luck、And what about holidays, what about in the States? You don't have much holidays in the States do you?E:No. When you start at a company you get two weeks holiday or two weeks vacation as we say、、、P:YeahE:Um then it's usually not until you've been at the company for about five ears that they give you another week、So you get three weeks after you've been there for five years、P:And what about in Brazil?Penny:Um it's quite good actually-30days. P:Sounds very generousPenny:Yeah I can pop back to、、、P:Is that30 workin£ days or30 daysin total?Penny:That's30 working daysP:Wow,that *sPenny:Yes,yeah it's a good deal. P:What about retirement?I know it1s a long way of there! When do you retire?E:Generally speaking it's at65、P:And the same for women、E:Um it's I think a little sooner than that for women、Women I think62or63、P;Right ,good、And in Brazil is it similar?Penny:Similar to the States、It"s um after60 for women、65 for men,or if you've clocked up about30 or35 years of service then you can retire after that、P:Right and when、、、do you have a pay day? When is pay day?E:Um,well ,we gt paid twice a month, so we get paid at the beginning of the month and then we £et paid in the middle of the month at thel5th give or take (大约)、P:Yeah, and what about in Brazil?Penny:I think it all depends which company you're working for. For the one I am working for right now I get paid twice a month but when I began, with a different company that was once a month, so,it varies、P:And are there any company benefits that you have in the States?Do you have a company car or a pension?E:Yeah,we get a company car、We * re able to、、、we lease a car in effect but it's a company car that we get forl8 months to two years and then we、、、we can move on to emother mod。

Unit1I am now a fourth-year student at college, but I can never forget my freshman year here. Going to college is not just to get a degree — it is to find out who you really are and what you are really made for.
Unit2Hello, I’m Alberto. I’m a student of English, French, Portuguese and Italian. I would also love to learn Chinese and German in the near future. My mother tongue is Spanish and I have a degree in Political Science. I love to learn new languages, because I think it broadens my mind. Even though I still have some difficulty with verb tenses, I’m confident that with time and practice I’ll cope with them. I believe learning a new language besides your mother tongue can be useful, especially in a world where distances are shortened and people from different countries communicate with each other more frequently. Learning a new language can be a good experience, but only if you keep in mind that nothing is obtained without some effort. In my opinion, the best way to learn a language is to read a lot. It doesn’t matter what you read, but that you do it. Even if you don’t un derstand everything, your reading comprehension skill will improve remarkably. Also, if possible, watch a lot of television in that language, or listen to CDs. Maybe at first you won’t understand a word, but later you’d catch on to the rhythm of the langua ge. Good dictionaries arenecessary, and books regarding vocabulary can be a plus. The Internet is also a useful tool. The language you choose to learn might seem a little difficult at first, or even totally strange, but you’ll get accustomed to it. Remember that the learning process is long, and that it never ends. However, it is also highly enjoyable.
Unit3The Birthday HeartOne day I was helping my mom preparing a picnic when my sisters arrived. They said, “Happy birthday, Mom!” and gave her some presents.I was sad. I had forgotten it was my mother’s birthday, but I didn’t want her to know that I had not remembered her birthday. I had one dollar in my piggy bank. With that I was sure that I could get a present that would show my mother how much I loved her.I went to the store. When I looked around, I suddenly realized that my dollar wouldn’t buy as much as I had thought it would. Then I saw a heart made of plastic. It contained typewriter correction paper. I knew that it would show my mother how much I loved her. It was ninety-nine cents.I took the heart to the cashier and gave her my dollar. She said that I didn’t have enough money because with tax the heart cost more than a dollar.I didn’t understand sales tax. All I understood was that I couldn’t give the heart to my mom. I went to put the heart back and the cashier asked me if it was my mom’s birthday. I nodded. Then she said that she could help me. She put some of her own pennies in the cash register with my dollar and gave me the heart in a bag. When my mother opened the bag and pulled out the heart, she exclaimed “What a beautiful present!” “It’s just what I need.” She put me on her lap and told me that she loved the heart and she loved me.I don’t remember many of the gifts that I have given my mother, but I will always remember the heart that I gave her on that birthday.一天,我在帮妈妈准备野餐,我的姐妹们到了。
