After the reading, decide on the best choice from the options given to each question.(15%)How and why do popular astrology and supernatural beliefs thrive in the West, especially in the USA? Americans are strong promoters of the thesis "man makes his destiny," where "destiny" places considerable emphasis on money, power, and life's comforts. Based on this criterion, not every life is obviously a success story. Some people feel left behind by the system. They are alienated(疏远), because by definition they see themselves as failures. Moreover, the structured work-oriented daily life in the USA may contribute to a setting in which many persons find themselves alone and lonely. This applies especially to traditional families in which men are employed and women raise children and take care of household chores. These families, especially the women, experience a critical turning point in their liveswhen their children, one-by-one, reach college age and leave home. A more permanent separation follows when the children start their own lives. The lively home of the past is suddenly transformed into a grave full of silence.Alienation, loneliness, boredom, monotony of routines can have "robotizing" influence on people. These personal situations are worsen in recent years by a perception of deeper problems in the system. The apparently democratic process - elections - can only change the representatives, but not this environment or system. The perception adds frustration, pessimism, and a sense of hopelessness. The high and rising rates of divorce, crime, homelessness, and alcohol and drug addiction in the USA may be studied from different perspectives, but collectively they represent the other side of the "American Dream." People who feel left behind and bored are motivated to find ways of passing time. Traditional solutions seem no longer satisfactory for all. Many people are attracted to astrology.1. In the passage, the author mainly discusses______.A. American dreamB. causes of astrology and superstitionsC. the cheating nature of superstition学生答案:B2. The government, in the form of the justice system, can also contribute to curbing crime by instilling the fear of punishment in those who might become criminals.院系: 班级: 姓名: 学号:装 订 线2020-2021《英语听力》4期末课程考试试卷B考试时间: 时限:90分钟 闭卷 试卷总分:100分适用专业:Caution:Please write your answers on your answer sheets. The answer seems to lie in the female physiology. Edurance depends not on muscle, but on fat. Although a man has a higher percentage of muscle tissue than a woman, the woman has relatively more fat. On the average, 25% of her body weight is fat, compared with only 15 percent in men.The difference gives women at learst two advantages in endurance events. Because fat is significantly lighter than muscle, a woman has far less weight to carry around than a man of the same age and height. The second advantage, however, is more important. Muscles need fuel to function. After the body uses up its ready supply of fuel, it must switch to fat. With their greater proportion of fat, women simply have more fuel available. Their bodies are also more accustomed to using fat and do it more efficiently.2020-2021《英语听力》4期末课程考试试卷A考试时间: 时限:90分钟 闭卷 试卷总分:100分 适用专业:Caution: Please write your answers on your answer sheets. 大学英语四级(听力篇章)专项练习试卷4(题后含答案及解析) 题型有:1.听力原文:Saving money is a first step toward wealth. Putting money away for the future also supports the banking system. Banks need a supply of savings to provide money for loans. In the United States, people who want to start a savings have many choices. Banks, savings-and-loans and credit unions are traditional places to open an account.[17]Credit unions are cooperatives for people who are linked in some way. For example, the members may work for a university or a government agency. Most credit unions are non-profit organizations. Savers have their money guaranteed up to one hundred thousand dollars. Banks and other financial organizations pay interest on savings accounts. But the interest rates are low. Certificates of deposit are another way to save. They pay higher interest rates. With a certificate of deposit, a person agrees not to withdraw an amount of money for a period of time. The term could be three months, or it could be several years. Longer terms, and larger amounts, pay higher interest. People can withdraw their money early but at a cost. Another way to save is through a money market fund. This is a kind of mutual fund. Mutual funds invest money from many people. Money market funds pay higher interest than savings accounts. The money is usually placed in short-term government securities. Money market funds, however, may not be federally guaranteed like other kinds of savings. 16. What are the traditional places to open an account in the United States?17. Which group can form a credit union?18. Which way of saving may not be federally guaranteed?1.A.Banks, government agencies and credit unions.B.Banks, deposit unions and money market funds.C.Banks, savings-and-loans and deposit unions.D.Banks, savings-and-loans and credit unions.正确答案:D解析:短文中说到:传统的可以开账户的场所是银行、储蓄与贷款协会以及信贷互助会。

Additionally, international study programs often provide access to cutting-edge research and technology, as well as opportunities to learn from leading experts in various fields. Furthermore, studying in a foreign country can enhance language skills and communication abilities, which are highly valued by employers around the globe. On the other hand, there are also some disadvantages associated with studying overseas. The cost of living and tuition fees in many countries can be significantly higher, placing a financial burden on students and their families. Moreover, being away from home for an extended period can lead tofeelings of homesickness and isolation, especially if the student struggles to integrate into the local community. There’s also the challenge of adapting to a different educational system, which might not always align with the student’s learning style or previous academic experiences. In conclusion, while studying abroad has its pros and as well as cons, it is up to each individual to weigh these factors and decide whether such an opportunity is right for them. Passage1
Demands for stronger protection for wildlife in Britain sometimes hide the fact that similar needs are felt in the rest of Europe. Studies by the Council of Europe, of which 21 countries are members, have shown that 45 percent of reptile species and 24 percent of butterflies are in danger of dying out. Dr. Peter Baum, an expert in the environment and nature resources division of the council, outlined European concern for wildlife when he spoke at a conference arranged by the administrators of a British national park. The park is one of the few areas in Europe to hold the council’s diploma for nature reserves of the highest quality and Dr. Baum had come to present it to the park once again. He was afraid that public opinion was turning against national parks, and that those set up in the 1960's and 1970's could not be set up today. But Dr. Baum clearly remained a strong supporter of the view that natural environments needed to be allowed to survive in space. No area could be expected to survive both as a true nature reserve and as a tourist attraction, he went on. We could manage without most industrial products, but we could not manage without nature. However, our natural environment areas, which are the original parts of our countryside, have shrunk to become mere islands in a spoiled and highly polluted landmass.
Passage2
Nothing in recent years has so changed the economy of the United States as the development of the supermarket. Previously, people bought their food in small grocery stores generally located on a nearby corner. Now, almost everyone shops in large supermarkets. The small independent grocery has practically disappeared from the American scene. When a supermarket is established in a certain city, other smaller stores rise up around it almost immediately. The entire group of stores becomes what is known as a shopping center. The average supermarket covers about 35,000 square feet of shopping area. It should have one parking place for every 300 square feet of shopping area. Six of every ten American shoppers drive to the supermarket. Statistics show that the average American housewife goes to the supermarket twice a week. On the average, she spends about one or two hours there in a week. Psychologists say that women don't just go to the supermarket to buy food. Visiting the supermarket is the housewife's chance to get away from home for a while. In the supermarket, she feels she is part of the outside world. She gets to know all of the new products. Frequently, she meets a number of her friends in the supermarket.
Passage3
First aid may be defined as the immediate and temporary care given to a victim of an accident or serious illness until the physician can be obtained. First aid commences with the steadying effect upon the stricken person when he realizes that competent hands will help him. The emergency situation often causes confusion in the mind of the victim. Things seem unreal and remote, and he often cannot think clearly and rationally for some time. The emotional reaction which results from a serious accident takes time to subside. Therefore, first aid is more than the physical attention of
dressing his injuries or making him comfortable. It is the general mental effect that the well-selected word of encouragement, the expression of willingness to help, the uplifting effect of the first aider's evident capability can be given. The suggestions made to solve immediate problems, the information given concerning nearby physicians and hospitals, the telephone call to summon medical help or an ambulance or to notify a relative, these too are first aid. The good first aider deals with the whole situation, the person and the injury. He knows what not to do as well as what to do. Thus, he avoids the error so commonly made through well mind but misguided efforts. He confines his procedures to what is necessary, keeping the handling of injured parts to a minimum.。
