1. 表示“把……与……比较”，通常用compare…with…，但在现代英语中，也可用compare… to…，或者用compare…and…。如：

一、用法

1、both与名词、代词连用

(1)both＋(of)＋the/物主代词/指示代词+名词

(2)both直接修饰名词时，不加of。

(3)在人称代词前一定要用both of，不能说both we或both us，但可以说us both,them both等。

2、both与动词连用

当both在句中作主语的`同位语时，也可与动词连用，both在句中的位置有以下两种情况：

(1)放在是动词be之后。

(2)放在行为动词前。

3、both作代词时，可单独使用，其后不接名词。

both表示两者都…是个副词，也可以做代词，例：

副词：We are both students.

代词：Both of us are students.

它的否定形式是neither，词性和both一样，例：

副词：We are neither,tudent.注意是单数名词。

代词：Neither of us IS a student.同样注意也是单数。

二、位置

1、一般在放在动词be，情态动词和助动词之后，实义动词之前。

如They are both teachers.=Both of them are teachers.

他们俩都是老师。

2、作定语时后跟名词复数。

There are many trees on both sides of the road .

用作名词，主要意思为“目的”“目标”，用法注意：

1. 表示做某事的目的，通常用 the purpose of 的结构。如：

What was the purpose of his visit 他来访的目的是什么？

He came here with [for] the purpose of seeing his family. 他来这里的目的是探亲。

若 purpose 前用了物主代词，则通常连用介词 in。如：

What is your purpose in being here 你在这儿干什么？

以下结构也用介词 in。如：
