Ⅱ.阅读理解Do you know the Eiffel Tower when you see a picture of it? Of course you do! So do a lot of other people. In fact, I believe more people recognize the Eiffel Tower than any other famous structure in the whole world. That long, long capital A is easy to remember. The Eiffel Tower is the famous symbol of the city of Paris. It also stands for France just as the Statue of Liberty stands for the United States. The Eiffel Tower was not very well liked at first, even though the design had been chosen out of seven hundred designs. A contest had been held to find a design for a tower to be built in Paris by 1889. That year would be one hundred years after the war known as the French Revolution. The French Revolution marked the time when the French people broke away from the rule of kings. It was a very important thing to all Frenchmen, and they wanted a special tower to be built to mark the 100 years. When his design was chosen, Eiffel was fifty-four, rich, and well-known for his fine work. He had already designed dams, churches, railroad stations, bridges, harbors and, of course, the framework of the Statue of Liberty. But it was the Eiffel Tower that made him really famous. At first, the French hated the tower. When it was begun in 1887, people called it ugly and useless. They also said that it couldn'tbe built safely, and that it would fall down. As the tower gets close to her one hundred and thirties, she is still in great shape. And the French people have changed their minds. Now they are very proud of their Eiffel Tower. They even think she is beautiful!1.The writer believes that the Eiffel Tower is ________ than any other famous structure in the world.A. tallerB. olderC. better designedD. better known2.The French Revolution was important to the French because ________.A. it gave France a new queenB. it got rid of a bad kingC. it ended the rule of kingsD. they built the Eiffel Tower 100 years later 3.The Eiffel Tower is easy to remember because of its ________.A. sizeB. shapeC. colorD. history4.What does this passage mainly tell us?A. But have you noticed how the animals run? Unlike all the other four-legged animals, elephants' legs work like a four-wheel-drive car, making them rather unusual in the animal world, according to a new study.Elephants' “fourlegdrive” system means strength is used independently to each leg. All the other fourlegged animals are thought to have “rearlegdrive (后腿驱动)”,that is to say,the back legs are used for speeding up while the front legs are used more for braking (刹车).Scientists had developed some new ways of looking at animal movement. The new ways may change the way that they view the movement of other animals, according to study leader John Hutchinson from the Royal Veterinary College in London.“We have shown that elephants' legs work in very strange ways.We even changed some of our own opinions in the past on elephants,” he added.“We also get some information from the study that will be useful in the examination and treatment of elephants, such as common lameness (跛) problems.”The researchers studied the movements of six young Asian elephants, using three-dimensional motion-capture technology (三维运动捕捉技术).The elephants were ridden at different speeds along a walkway with a piece of special equipment. The scientists found that each leg of the elephants was used for both speeding up and braking. Their legs were shown to be slightly “bouncy (有弹性的)” especially when running fast,so they are slower than many other animals.Surprisingly, elephants use their forelegs and back-legs similarly in braking and increasing the speed, not dividing these among legs as was thought before or as other four-legged animals, said John Hutchinson. “Thus, their legs work similarly to fourwheeldrive cars.”1.It can be known from the study that ________.A.tigers use their forelegs to speed upB.scientists spent years studying elephantsC.land animals had “rearlegdrive” long beforeD.the movement of elephants is quite special2.Some basic information from the research can be helpful in dealing with ________.A.some elephants' walking problemsB.elephants' running speedC.how to stop elephants from getting illD.why some elephants are overweight3.What can we infer from the passage?A.Elephants are running in an unexplained way according to the study. B.The elephants being studied come from different places around the world. C.Elephants' moving speed has something to do with their bouncy legs.D.It is under study when elephants will run faster than other four-legged animals.4.Which of the following would be the BEST title for the passage?A.Study on elephants leads to an inventionB.Elephants appear strange in the animal worldC.The movement of elephants is similar to that of carsD.Elephants' legs work like four-wheel drive课时作业(十五)一.单词拼写【答案】 1.ceremony 2.event 3.track 4.souvenir 5.downtown二.阅读理解1.答案与解析D细节理解题。
