Carnations are worn during exam time to show how far along each student is with their exams. White carnations are worn for the first exam, red carnations for the last and pink carnations for all the exams in between. One suggested reason for this tradition is that students used to place a white carnation in their red ink-pots when taking exams, so by the last exam it was completely red.You can easily tell which students have finished their exams by the red carnations. They leave the exam halls through a special back door, running into the arms of their friends. The friends are quick to cover them in Prosecco and various other items to celebrate.Carnations are not compulsory, but tradition also states that students must be given the flowers by someone else. Whatever the reason, I hope that this is one tradition that is here to stay. It is so nice to see people all around town buying each other flowers, wishing strangers luck and congratulating those wearing red.News report 1Multiple Choices1.
(A c a d e m i c W r i t i n g)这个概念可以分为两个主要部分,即“学术”以及“写作”。
与个人写作不同,学术写作使用规范以表达某种观点,这就是“学术”部分的解释。
个人写作(P e r s o n a l W r i t i n g)缺乏规范,因此没有特定结构组织、使用俚语和缩写等限制,就像个人日记那样个人写作过于主观,在此我们可以依靠个人经验论证作文核心思想。

Spears,R.A.2003.McGrawHill’s dictionary of American idioms and phrasal verbs[M].New York:McGraw-Hill.和Spears,R.A.&Schinke-Llano,L.2000.N.T.C.’s American idioms dictionary:National Textbook Language Dictionaries[M].2nd ed.New York:McGraw-Hill Contemporary.。
英语为母语的人也不理解上述英译(张顺生2006a:68)。
显然,谚语翻译不可望文生义、人云亦云。
如果考虑到文化内涵,汉语中的“一个和尚挑水吃,两个和尚抬水吃,三个和尚没水吃”或可译作“One Buddhist monk in a temple will fetch his drinking water alone;two will fetch water together;but with three, none will go to get it.”如果仅从意义入手,译成“Everybody’s business is nobody’s business.”也未尝不可。

They also take shorter vacations than employees in 1997 took. It seems that Americans are working harder today than ever before. Or are they?A management consultant, Bill Meyer, decided to find out. For three days, he observed an investment banker hard at work. Meyer wrote down everything that banker did during his long workday----the banker worked 80 hours a week. At the end of the three-day period, Meyer reviewed the banke r’s activities with him. They discovered that the man spent 80 percent of his time doing busy work. For example, he attended unnecessary meetings, made repeated telephone calls, and spent time packing and unpacking his two big briefcases.Apparently, many people believe that the more time a person spends at work, the more she or he accomplished. However, the connection between time and productivity is not always positive. In fact, many studies indicate that after a certain point, anyone’s productivity and creativity begin to decrease. Furthermore, it is not always easy for individuals to realize that their performance is falling off.Part of the problem is understandable. When employers evaluate employees, they often consider the amount of time on the job in addition to job performance. Employees know this. Consequently, they work longer hours and take less vacation time than they did nine years ago. Although many working people can do their job effectively during a regular 40-hour work week, they feel they have to spend more time on the job after normal working hours so that the people who can promote them see them.【2017大一英语期末试题带答案】。
短语(phrasal verbs):如“look forward to”,“in terms of”等。
惯用表达式(idiomatic expressions):如“to kick the bucket”,“to break the ice”等。
句子框架(sentence frames):如“I think that…”,“there is no doubt that…”
例如,“in my opinion…”,“as far as I’m concerned…”等句子框架可以提高语言表达的逻辑性和条理性。
