I am Henry Jekyll.I was born in the1800s.I inherited(继承)a large fortune,a healthy body and an excellent mind.I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job.So the outside world saw a serious,hard-working,successful doctor.Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild,fun-loving,irresponsible young man. Both of them were me.They lived together in the same body.

“Was it possible,”I wondered,“to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?”

After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer.I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug.At last I got everything ready.

Late one night,I mixed everything together and prepared my drug.I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely,I drank every bitter drop.

I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place.Wild thoughts danced through my mind—the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before.“If this is pure evil,”I thought,“I like it.”

I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room,I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.

At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side.Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man.I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men. Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde’s eyes.I felt no dislike, however.Indeed,I welcomed him.Edward Hyde was me,young and strong and full of life.

Dear Madam,

Welcome back to school. My child is so happy to be in your class this year.We know you care so much about your students.I want to tell you a little bit about my child.Although he really loves to learn,he is somewhat anxious about being back in school again.

My child is thought to be gifted and that has brought some unexpected challenges to him and our family. To many people, being gifted means he will do very well in school, but that hasn’t always been true for him.He is just a kid thinking differently, and he sometimes struggles in https://www.doczj.com/doc/393600025.html,st year, school wasn’t easy for him for a few reasons.

He may be ahead a few grade levels in some subjects, but not in all subjects. He just doesn’t do better in all areas all the time. And although he may seem older than his years,he doesn’t always behave like you would think he should.I’m sure you know how gifted children can be emotionally immature–that is exactly my kid.

Also,he can be really intense in class when you are teaching one of his favorite topics. He may raise his hand often and constantly talk about what he thinks about it.I’ll apologize in advance because he will also likely challenge you on information or facts which he feels are not quite right especially when it’s a topic he is hooked on.He is not being impolite and he isn’t just being a know-it-all,or a show-off,he is really just very excited to be learning about a subject he feels strong about. He just gets carried away!

Last year,he was teased about looking like a know-it-all in school by some of his classmates, which hurts him A LOT.Being teased is part of his fear of going back to school. He fears being called a show-off at school and he feels like he doesn’t fit in.His teacher said he often kept to himself and chose to work alone.I know as a teacher, you are incredibly busy, but could you keep an eye out for anyone teasing him or if he seems to be keeping to himself too much?

Lastly, his therapist(理疗师)mentioned that because of the teasing and maybe because he was bored last year in school,he is showing signs of becoming an underachiever. Please let me know if his grades start slipping.

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand about my child.Don’t hesitate to call or email me if there are any problems with him at school.Believe me,we know very well how sensitive, emotional and intense he can be.

I hope you have a wonderful school year!

Sincerely,

Mom of a Gifted Child

The Mystery of the Famous Word Collector

One of the greatest contributors to the first Oxford English Dictionary was also one of its most unusual.In1879,Oxford University in England asked Prof.James Murray to serve as editor for what was to be the most ambitious dictionary in the history of the English language. It would include every English word possible and would give not only the definition but also the history of the word and quotations(引文)showing how it was used.

This was a huge task,so Murray had to find volunteers from Britain, the United States, and the British colonies to search every newspaper, magazine, and book ever written in English. Hundreds of volunteers responded, including William Chester Minor.Dr.Minor was an American surgeon who had served in the Civil War and was now living in England. He gave his address as “Broadmoor,Crowthorne,Berkshire,”50miles from Oxford.

Minor joined the army of volunteers sending words and quotations to Murray.Over the next 17years,he became one of the staff’s most valued contributors.

But he was also a mystery. In spite of many invitations,he would always decline to visit Oxford. So in1897,Murray finally decided to travel to Crowthorne himself. When he arrived,he found Minor locked in a book-lined room at the Broadmoor Asylum(精神病院)for the Criminally Insane.

Murray and Minor became friends, sharing their love of words.Minor continued contributing to the dictionary, sending in more than10,000submissions in20years.Murray continued to visit Minor regularly, sometimes taking walks with him around the asylum grounds.

In1910,Minor left Broadmoor for an asylum in his native America.Murray was at the port to wave goodbye to his remarkable friend.

To Whom It May Concern:

On August27,2016,I ordered a Skunk Scooter

from your website.I was very excited when it arrived

because I bought it with money I saved from doing

odd jobs over summer.Unfortunately,I have

experienced several problems with my Skunk Scooter.

First of all,the front wheel shakes from side to side, making the scooter difficult to ride. And also,it makes a horrible sound. The sound is louder and more annoying than a roaring engine. My dad and I had to tighten the screws (螺丝).However,it did not help. The wheel continues to shake. The scooter is faulty and cannot be repaired.

In addition,I cannot adjust the handlebars.According to your website, they can be easily raised to a height of thirty-six inches. This does not seem to be true. The handlebars are set at thirty inches, and they cannot be raised or lowered. It appears that the knob that is used to adjust the height is jammed into the handlebars, which makes it impossible to turn in either direction.

Although you advertised the Skunk Scooter as“the quickest, slickest scooter on the planet,”my purchase was an exception.Since your website promises to accept returns,I want my money back.I have sent you a copy of my receipt. Please let me know how I should ship the scooter back to your company.I know that you would not want customers to keep broken products. Therefore,I would like to thank you in advance. My money can be mailed to me at3260N.Main Street,Clarks,TN37040.

Sincerely,

Natasha Greene
