Maia Szalavitz 1 After too long on the Net, even a phone call can be a shock. My boyfriend's Liverpool accent suddenly becomes impossible to interpret after his easily understood words on screen; a secretary's clipped tone seems more rejecting than I'd imagined it would be. Time itself becomes fluid -- hours become minutes, or seconds stretch into days. Weekends, once a highlight of my week, are now just two ordinary days.虚拟世界的生活迈亚·塞拉维茨在网上呆了太久,听到电话铃声也会吓一大跳。
U校园新视野大学英语4读写教程答案Unit 4 Nature: To worship or to conquer Section A4-2 Text A: Achieving sustainable environmentalism Pre-reading activitiesPre-reading activities-11) A2) B3) B4) B5) APre-reading activities-21) As I understand, a "green city" is a city or town that focuses on environmentally friendly practices. It aims to improve the livability of urban surroundings and benefit the well-being of citizens living there.2) To build a green city, other measures include water quality control, efficient recycling and management of waste, use of renewable energy sources, increase of city residents' awareness of environmental protection, and easy access to products and services that make green lifestyle choices easy, such as easy access to organic products and clean transportation methods.Reading comprehensionReading comprehension-11) The rule of sane environmentalism, which holds the belief that it is only necessary to combat ecological changes that directly threaten human health and safety.2) Because they directly threaten human beings, and their consequences cannot be easily addressed.3) It indulges in overt earth worship. It is sentimental, highly selective and incompatible with the reality of natural disasters.4) The author means that he doesn't think man should indulge in nature worship because natural disasters can bring people terrible tragedies.5) The author thinks that biodiversity is necessary to the ecosystem, but it has to be sacrificed sometimes to meet more fundamental human needs.6) The author stands on the side of protecting the logging families. To him, the livelihood of the logging families is more important than the spotted owl.7) The author thinks that nature is under the supervision of us humans, rather than being our master. Humans need to respect nature as well as cultivate it. But when humans have to choose between their own interests and those of nature, they should put their own interests in the first place.8) Man should adapt to nature only when his fate and that of nature are closely connected and man's fate is put in danger. For example, ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect will threaten the living environment of man. Therefore, man has to change his behavior anddo something to stop or reduce the impact of ozone depletion and the greenhouse effect.Reading comprehension-21) I don't quite like the author's classification of "environmental necessity" and "environmental luxury".I think this classifying method is too narrow and extreme. To me, all the issues related to environmental protection need to be considered, not just the ones that threaten human health and safety. Take what the author says about the spotted owl for example. If the spotted owl becomes extinct, the whole ecosystem will be affected and we don't know what other environmental problems will arise.I like the author's classification of "environmental necessity" and "environmental luxury". To me, the world can only spend money and energy protecting things that human beings do depend on for survival. It is impossible for the world to deal with all kinds of environmental problems due to its inability to pay for the costs.2) Human activities can either cause natural disasters or make their effects much worse. For example, one reason that sandstorms, floods and landslides take place is that forests have been destroyed by humans and there are not enough trees and plants to hold the soil. To reduce such natural disasters, humans should attach great importance to planting trees, and at the same time make strict laws to protect forests so that people will not cut trees without planning.3) I think man and nature are interdependent. The reasons are as follows. First, man must realize that he is part of nature and he needs to depend on nature. Therefore man can't ignore natural laws and change nature as he likes. Second, man must understand that nature needs to be managed. If nature has a problem, man should try to solve it as soon as possible. Otherwise, man will eventually suffer from the consequences of the problem.4) Some environmental problems the world is faced with: Water pollution: A large population in the world lacks access to clean drinking water.Air pollution: The air in many cities of the world is so seriously polluted that people can hardly see a blue sky.Wildlife protection: Natural habitats of the wildlife are seriously damaged, and many wildlife species are in danger of extinction.Land erosion: Desertification in some places of the world is causing the loss of large areas of grassland every year.To sum up, these problems are caused by the following factors:People don't have strong awareness of environmental protection.People don't have a long-term vision. They hunt or cut down trees for temporary profit, but they don't realize the price they or their children have to pay in the long run. Some local governments don't make good plans about economic development.5) First, the authorities must have better foresight. Environmental protection is a long-lasting campaign and its impact can't be felt in a short term. However, governments and authorities should always keep in mind the imperative of environmental protection. Some economic benefits don't last long, but the harm to the environment may be enduring. Second, strict laws and policies should be made to ensure that the economy is not developed at the cost of the environment. For example, factories which produce heavy pollution should be closed down and punished severely so that other factories will not do the same.4-3 Text A: Language focusWords in use1. consolidate2. differentiate3. dreadful4. incompatible5. alleged6. bizarre7. correlation8. negligible9. habitats10. intelligibleWord building: Practice Word building: Practice-11) harmonious2) disastrous3) spacious4) hazardous5) virtuous6) victorious7) desirous8) adventurous9) evenly10) routinely11) consequent12) respectivelyWord building: Practice-21. victorious2. hazardous3. consequent4. adventurous5. disastrous6. evenly7. spacious8. respectively9. virtuous10. routinely11. harmonious12. desirous Banked cloze1) incompatible2) preserve3) available4) proportion5) utilized6) converted7) dreadful8) balance9) sane10) considerable Expressions in use 1. took on2. called upon3. runs against the grain4. be incompatible with5. come through6. is bound up7. differentiate between8. have struck a chord with4-4 Structure analysis & writingStructured writing: Practice参考:Have you ever been to a national park? How do you like it? Nowadays, national parks are very common in the world, and they can be found in many countries. Most people believe that national parks are necessary because they can help protect the variety of species on earth and offer people a place where they can explore nature and learn more about the environment. However, there are also different voices about the establishment of national parks. Some people are against national parks because they argue that wild areas should not be disturbed, and wild animals should be left entirely alone. But I think these people may not have realized that some wild animals and plants have become so rare that proper protection is necessary and urgent. The establishment of national parks aims to provide a safe home for native plants and animals. For instance, Wolong National Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province has provided a natural habitat for giant pandas and many other precious species.Other people oppose national parks because they worry that too much exploration of national parks can be damaging to the environment. True, extreme exploration will do harm to anything. But reasonable exploration of national parks can not only increase people's knowledge about the environment, but also is beneficial to the protection of biodiversity. The thing is, in considering building up a national park, the authorities and experts involved must plan carefully to make sure that the national park will play a significant role in protecting biodiversity. In addition, the government can use the park as a livingschool to teach people the importance of environmental protection. All in all, I agree that national parks are necessary. If we can make good use of them, we can not only protect plant and animal species, but also help people learn more about our environment.4-5 TranslationTranslationTranslation-1参考:巴洛克建筑是一种建筑风格,兴盛于16世纪晚期至18世纪中期的欧洲。

Unit4Truth and InterpretationPart I:Learning the SkillsActivity1Review the texts you have read in the previous units.Discuss with your partner which point of view is employed in each text and whether you would have different feelings about these texts if different points of view were employed.Suggestions for instructors:Discuss with students how the point of view change leads to the differences in the narration.Activity2Read the following four excerpts and discuss with your partner which point of view is employed in each excerpt, whether the difference gives you different feelings toward the same event and how your response is influenced by how much the narrator knows and how objective the narrator is.Activity3Narrate an incident in your childhood(either real or made-up)from several points of view: first from your own point of view;next from the point of view of your family;finally from the point of view of a stranger who witnessed the incident.Evaluate which point of view is easier to write and which point of view tells the story best.Suggestions for instructors:Another option:Read the following examples and ask the students to work in groups and rewrite from a different point of view(first person point of view, for instance)and share their writing with other groups.Leslie sat in front of Paul. She had two long, brown pigtails that reached all the way down to her waist.Paul saw those pigtails, and a terrible urge came over him.He wanted to pull a pigtail. He wanted to wrap his fist around it,feel the hair between his fingers, and just yank.He thought it would be fun to tie the pigtails together,or better yet,tie them to her chair. But most of all,he just wanted to pull one.---Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar At the pizza place,Tony the baker was getting the pizzas ready for baking. He flattened out a ball of dough into a large pancake and tossed it in the air.He spread tomato sauce on it, sprinkled it with cheese, and shoved it in the oven. Then the telephone rang.“A fellow from the factory wants a large pizza delivered in a hurry,”Tony’s wife called.“OK,I’ll get my coat,”said Tony.---Curious George and the Pizza by Margret ReyPart II:Case AnalysisActivity4Read the above two versions of“The Three Little Pigs”and consider the differences it makes when the narrator is different.Task1Understanding the textComplete the following sentences based on your understanding of the texts.1)The point of view in the first version is third-person limited omniscient point of view.2)The wolf in the first version was described as big and bad.3)The third little pig in the first version was described as smart.4)The point of view in the second version is first-person point of view.5)The wolf in the second version was described as innocent.6)The third little pig in the second version was described as impolite.Task2Responding to the textWrite your answer to each question in full sentences. Then discuss your answers with your partner.1)What leads to the different characterization of the wolf in the two versions? The different characterization of the wolf was created through the different points of view. 2)Which characterization of the wolf do you think is more reliable and what leads to your conclusion? The first was more reliable because the second version was using the first-person point of view.3)How does the change of point of view change the development of the story? The change of point of view leads to quite different interpretation of the same event.Text B A Day’s WaitSuggestions for instructors:The whole story was written from the father’s point of view. The students may be asked to work in groups and retell the story orally with the boy being the narrator.Activity5Read Text B and think about the story’s point of view.Task1Understanding the textFind out the following elements of the text.Character(s):a little boy and his fatherSetting:the little boy had a feverPoint of view:first person point of viewPlot:The little boy who had a fever thought he would die because he confused Fahrenheit and Celsius. Unit 4 Essay writingTopic: Stressful life for kidsIntroduction: Thesis statement: Some parents tend to expect too much from their childrenBody:Cause 1: The harsh realityCause 2: The peer pressureCause 3: Parents’ love for their kidsConclusion: To set reasonable expectations for the kids is no easy, but is worth trying.Sample:Compared with old days, a common phenomenon in modern times is that some parents tend to expect too much from children. As a consequence, teenagers tend to be under great pressure. In my view, two factors contribute to such a situation. The harsh social reality faced by young people themselves serves as the primary cause. The amazingly rapid pace of innovation and technological advancement spark the development of AI, which further leads to a new round of division of labor. Jobs that used to be dependent on manual labor can now be undertaken by machines and robots. That’s why many companies are forced to downsize. Parents are getting so worried that they find themselves unconsciously expect a lot more from their children. In addition, peer pressure also makes parents anxious. It’s simply unbearable for parents to see their own kids lagging behind while the others are struggling with a busy schedule every day. Therefore, children have to follow their parents’ arrangements and enroll in various training classes beyond curricula in school. It is well understandable that parents want a promising future for their kids, but too often they set goals too high and pose too much stress for the young ones. The result, as can be well predicted, may turn toward an opposite direction. Therefore, it is suggestive for parents to learn to take a reasonable approach in planning for children’s studies.。
Student Essay 10Reform the System First or Change the Conceptions First?1 Last year, four provinces adopted a new form of CET [College English Test]. The new form was quite different from the traditional ones[one] and it waspraised by many people. What’s more important, it demonstrates that an education revolution will take[has taken] place in China. The target of the reform is to cultivate students with comprehensive qualifies[to cultivate students’ comprehensive qualities]. Doubtlessly, it is good. Since the reform was put forward in 1999, it has been two years. How is it carried out? Will the students in this system be more competent?2 Not long ago, a reporter went to a country of Shandong province [a county in Shandong province]. He saw the facility[that the facilities] had been improved a lot. Computers, multimedia were brought into classes, but it didn’t make the class any more interesting. Whereas, it brought more loads to the students. The teacher made full use of the equipment and asked the students to do more homework. According to the regulations, schools should reduce the number of the required courses[the compulsory courses] and give selective courses[elective courses] to develop students’ abilities. But the reporter saw something different. The number of compulsory courses was not reduced; elective courses were a little [only a few] and the students were given examinations of those courses. Why? The new system is good and can make studen ts innovative. Why isn’t it car ried out successfully?3 Not long after some educators came up with “Quality Education” [All-Round Education], the government decided to carry out the new system. At then [At that time], not many people knew exactly what it was. People were only told that students who are comprehensively developed are needed. In other words, the system was carried out while people’s conceptions remained the same.4 For long time[For a long time], the society embraces unitary model of education that houses all the students under one roof. Students were just told to study hard and enter a good university. After entering the university, they could develop other kinds of abilities. Study for more time, play for less time [They were asked to spend more time for study and less time for games], and turn a deaf ear to some “useless” skills. The traditional conceptions not onlyhinder students from developing comprehensively (even if the school has started some programs to develop the students’ abilities, the students may ask themselves if they should study or join in these programs), but also influence students’ parents and their teachers. They put pressure on students. Yet, the system is reforming [is being reformed] and people have to follow it. But I want to ask if people’s conceptions are against the reform, how could it be carrri ed out! Changing people’s conceptions has emerged as the most important thing during the course of the reform. Since the elementary thing isn’t prepared, it’s definite that the reform can’t be carried out successfully. People’s conception has fallen behind with the reform[has fallen behind the reform]. It’s quite like that the people in a feu dal society were asked to realize the communism. How could the reform be carried out?5 The “All-Round Education” system is good indeed. If people can change their conceptions, students can learn more skills, such as how to solve problems synthetically and how to think over difficult questions. Those couldn’t be learnt in the traditional teaching, which emphasizes memorization and testing. But first people must change their conceptions, which contradict with [contradict] the advanced system在评判一篇文章是如何展开段落时首先要看它的标题与内容是否相符,否则在评论时就无从下手。
(Why is the reform not so effective?)较好。
