(2)We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed-ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming(把...... It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyse and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them everyencouragement to attain this goal.1. In the passage the author's attitude towards "mixed-ability teaching" is _______ .A) critical B)questioningC) approving D)objective2. By "held back" (Line I) the author means ______ .A) made to remain in the same classesB) forced to study in the lower classesC) drawn to their studiesD) prevented from advancing3. Which of the following is NOT MENTIONED in the third paragraph?A) Group work gives pupils the opportunity to learn to work together with others.B) Pupils also learn to develop their reasoning abilities.C) Group work provides pupils with the opportunity to learn to be capable organizers.D) Pupils also learn how to participate in teaching activities.5. The author's purpose in writing this passage is to _______ .A) argue for teaching bright and not-so-bright pupils in the same classB) recommend pair work and group work for classroom activitiesC) offer advice on the proper use of the libraryD) emphasize the importance of appropriate formal classroom teaching1.C

One of the bitterest and most time-worm debates in student union bars up and down the country is resolved as academic research confirms that in financial terms at least, arts degrees are a complete waste of time.Getting through university boosts students’earnings by 25%, on a weighted average, or $220,000 over theirlifetime, according to Professor Ian Walker of Warwick University-but if they study Shakespeare or the peasants’revolt instead of anatomy of contract law, those gains are likely to be completely wiped out.The government is about to allow universities to charge students up to $3,000 a year for their degrees, arguing that it’s a small price to pay compared with the financial rewards graduates reap later in life. But Prof. Walker’s research shows there are sharp variations in returns according to which subject a student takes.Law, medicine and economics or business are the most lucrative choices, making their average earnings 25% higher, according to the article, published in the office for national statistics’monthly journal. Scientists get 10-15% extra. At the bottom of the list are arts subjects, which make only a “small ”differenceto earnings- a small negative one, in fact. Just ahead are degrees in education-which leave hard pressed teachers anaverage of 5% better off a year than if they had left school at 18.“it’s hard to resist the conclusion that what students learn does matter a lot; and some subject areas givemore modest financial returns than others,”Prof. Walker said. As an economist, he was quick to point outthat students might gain non-financial returns from arts degrees:”Studying economics might be very dull, forexample, and studying post-modernism might be a lot of fun.” Choose correct answers to the question:1.What is the best title for the passage?A.Professor Walker’s ResearchB.How to Make Big Money.C.Differences Between Science and Arts Degrees.D.Studying Arts Has Negative Financial Outcome.2.Universities charge students a rather high tuition mainly because_____A.they provide the students with very prosperous subjects to learnB.they assume that their graduates can earn much more than they had paidC.they don’t get financial support from the governmentD.they need much revenue to support the educational expenses3.The word “lucrative”(Line 1, Para. 4) most probably means _____A.sensibleB.creativeC.profitableD.reliablew, medical and business graduates could earn 25% more than ______cation graduatesB.arts graduatesC.those who had not studied at the universityD.the average income5.We can safely conclude that the author ______A.regards arts degrees as meaninglessB.finds this result disappointing and unfairC.wants the students to think twice before they decide what to learn in collegeD.holds that arts degrees are still rewarding despite its scarce financial returns1.[D] 主旨大意题。
5. READING COMPREHENSIONPART V READING COMPREHENSION (25 MIN)Directions: In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. The communications explosion is on the scale of the rail, automobile or telephone revolution. Very soon you’ll be able to record your entire life electronically —anything a microphone or a camera can sense you’ll be able to store. In particular, the number of images a person captures in a lifetime is set to rise exponentially. The thousand images a year I take of my children on a digital camera are all precious to me. In a generation’s time, my children’s children will have total image documentation of their entire lives—a visual log of tremendous personal value. By then we’ll be wrestling with another question; how we control all the electronic devices connected to the Internet: trillions of PCs, laptops, palmpilots, cell phones and other gadgets. In Cambridge, we’re already working on millimeter-square computing and sensing devices that can be linked to the Internet through the radio net work. This sort of connectivity will expand dramatically as microscopic communications devices become dirt-cheap and multiply. Just imagine what the paint on the wall could do if it had this sort of communications dust in it: change color, play music, show movies or even speak to you. Falling costs raise other possibilities too. Because launching space vehicles is about to become very much cheaper, the number of satellites is likely to go up exponentially. There’s lots of space up there so we could have millions of them. And if you have millions of low-orbit satellites you can establish a global communications network that completely does away with towers and masts. If the satellites worked on the cellular principle so you got spatial reuse of frequencies, system capacity would be amazing. Speech is so flexible that I expect voice communication to become almost free eventually: you’ll pay just a monthly fixed charge and be able to make as many calls as you want. By then people will also have fixed links with business contacts, friends and relatives. One day I anticipate being able to keep in touch with my family in Poland on a fibreoptic audio-video link; we’ll be able to have a little ceremony at supper-time, open the curtains and sit down “together”to eat. Cars are an interesting IT-platform because they have big batteries and lots of so far unconnected digital devices. Soon each one will be an entity on the Internet so your children can play interactive games while you’re traveling and your partner can deal with their email. And every lamppost could be on the Internet too—each one with sensors to monitor light, pollution, air quality and traffic flow.1.What’s the central topic of the passage?A.IT-platform.B.Visual log.C.V oice communication.D.Telecoms.
TEXT ADo you realize that every time you take a step, the bones in your hip are subjected to forces between four and five times your body weight?[81]When you are running, this force is increased further still. What happens if through disease a hip-joint ceases to be able to resist such forces? For many years hip-joints and other body joints have been replaceable either partially or completely. It is after all a simple ball and socket joint; it has certain loads imposed on it; it needs reliability over a defined life; it must contain materials suitable for the working environment. [82]Any engineer will recognize these as characteristic of a typical engineering problem,(工程师觉得这是一个典型的机械问题) which doctors and engineers have worked together to solve, in order to bring a fresh lease(租约;租期;租赁物;租赁权)of life to people who would otherwise be disabled. This typifies the way in which engineers work to help people and create a better quality of life. The fact that this country has the most efficient agricultural industry in the world is another good example.[84]Mechanical engineers have worked with farmers and biologists to produce fertilizers, machinery and harvesting systems. This team effort has now produced crops uniformly waist high or less so that they are better suited to [83]mechanical harvesting. Similar advances with other crops have released people from hard and boring jobs for more creative work, whilst [83]machines harvest crops more efficiently with less waste. Providing more food for the rapidly increasing population is yet another role for the mechanical engineer.81. According to the passage, when would most weight be imposed on hip-joints?A. When one is walking.B. When one is running.C. When one is standing.D. When one is lying down.

There is no denying that students should learn something about how computers work, just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal-combustion engine(内燃机)has something to do with burning fuel, expanding gases and pistons (活塞)being driven. For people should have some basic idea of how the things that they use do what they do. Further, students might be helped by a course that considers the computer‘s impact on society. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy. For computer literacy is not a formof literacy (读写能力);it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a liberal art.Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one are two distinct activities.A case might be made that the competent citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one. Leave that to people who havechosen programming as a career. While programming can be lots of fun,and while our society needs some people who are experts at it,the same is true of auto repair and violin-making.Learning how to use a computer is not that difficult, and it gets easier all the time as programs become more “user-friendly”。

Engineering students are supposed to be examples of practicality and rationality, but when it comes to mycollege education I am an idealist and a fool. In high school I wanted to be an electrical engineer and, of course, any sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But that‘s not what I did.
I chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts(文科)university that doesn‘t even offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career.I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interacting with people who weren’t studying science orengineering. My parents, teachers and other adults praised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my
18 years,and I believed them.
I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering “factories”where they didn‘t care if you have values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist(人文学者)all in one.
Now I‘m not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals
crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and engineering courses with liberal-arts courses,I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile(协调) engineering with liberal-arts courses in college.
The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply don’t mix as easily as I assumed in high school. Individually they shape a person in very different ways; together they threaten to confuse. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult.
