How to celebrate the Spring Festival
Besides the dinner party in the home, watch CCTV’s Spring Gala is another important entertainment at the eve. This Gala has been performed for more than 20 years, and it has become the essential part of the eve. The Gala was once the only entertainment for Chinese in the eve in the 1980s and the early 1990s. All TV channels relayed this Gala in the eve. Then there turned out the most interesting scene that all family sat before the box and enjoyed the same programs together with others around the country. Though the watching rate of CCTV Gala at the eve may not as high as before, it is still the highest TV program at the eve. The Gala is still the most popular topic for chatting among people in the Spring Festival. Many new words and expressions in the programs of the Gala are produced and become popular. Even some of them are popular for a whole year.
One more evident can prove that the Spring Festival will not die out. The Spring Festival is the best time for people to relax themselves and enjoy the time with their relatives and friends who they might not see each other for one year. In the day of New Year, the first thing for people is to visit their relatives or friends. In some places, people only visit their relatives in the first three days of year. Take my family for example. My home is in a small town in the southern China. In my mother side, I have one aunt and five uncles. It is a big family but with very close relation. There would be a family dinner party in the grandparents’at the eve. Until I was 12 years old, as seven children had their own family, the family party came to the end. Then, the dinner party is changed to the first day of new year when all seven family come to visit the parents. For some years, the mother’s family took a kind of way that each family invited other families to the house and had a dinner party. So, each family has to arrange their schedule exclusively for the first seven days. In each family, the hostess cooks foods in person, and these foods are variants in cooking styles. They are so delicious.
All adult family members chat. As they all are busy in their own work throughout the year, they don’t have chances to talk with each other. The dinner party then is considered the main chance for the formation and maintenance of close relations among family. Sometimes, some sit together and play ma’jiang, a well-known indoor game in China. While the adults chat together, the kids stay together and play games. Of course, the kids are allowed to fire fireworks outside. I still remember the interesting trivial in the game of firework. At that time, I was so naughty in firing the fireworks. Once, I bought fireworks with the money in the lucky bag with getting my parent’s permission. Later, I was almost be physically punished by my parents, for my parents didn’t want to do that in the holiday. My eye got hurt by the firework’s powder while I could not throw the lightening firework quick enough. I put the firework in the glass bottle and hide behind a tree, peering the bombing. I put the firework in the lead tin and laughed for the tin’s crash. I also liked to through a small firework to the river and see how high the water could be. The naughtiest thing I have ever done with firework is that I threw the firework to my cousin’s back and scared him so hard.
After all, the Spring Festival is not a form for celebration but a kind of culture for every Chinese people. Their attitude and activities contribute the formation of conception of the Spring Festival. It is no way to always reserve the same means to celebrate the Festival. Some of
activities are remained, say, family reunion, dinner party and watching CCTV’s Gala. They may be not so attractive as much as before, but they may be still the core of the Festival. In addition, there are many more activities added to the Festival activities. All these new activities are digging up the depth of the Festival culture. Since the Festival is essential part of Chinese culture, the reconsideration of the cultural forms in related to the Spring Festival will bring more hints to the on-going cultural revolution in modern China.。
