一In America, the land of equal opportunity, Asians seem better able than most other people groups to succeed, especially in the field of education. It is becoming more and more common for the top students in American schools and colleges to be the ones with the Asian faces. In one of the U.S. college entrance exams, the SAT, Asian-Americans had an average score of 1091, while white students had an average of 1068, Hispanics 922, and blacks 864.It isn’t just being Asian, however, that guarantees such a mazing test scores. Filipino-Americans, for example, are not usually top academic achievers, although they do very well for themselves overall. The Asians who are usually at the head of the class are mostly those from Asian cultures most strongly influenced by Confucian ideas, such as China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. So why do these Asians usually rise to the top of the academic world? Because of their hard-working immigrant background? That might seem to be the answer, but many top students are Asians no longer from immigrant families, but from families which have lived in the U.S. for three or four generations. Another theory that some scientists have suggested is that Asians from Confucian cultures generally have a higher IQ because of having a culture with longer history of jobs that depended on brains rather than just physicalstrength. This theory, though interesting, is not supported by the facts, as these Asians are not as a rule academically successful in other countries around the world. The general conclusion of most is that Asians’ academic success is, in large part, due to the strong influence of the Confucian ideas offilial piety, respect for education, and hard work. These Confucianideas together with the Western system of higher education have made the perfect environmentfor success for young Asian students.
Bittersweet MemoriesKaren Odem1 High school graduation —the bittersweet feelings are as much a part of me now as they were twenty-one years ago.2 As graduation day approached, excitement increased. Being out of high school meant I was finally coming of age. Soon I would be on my own, making my own decisions, doing what I wanted without someone looking over my shoulder and it meant going to school with boys, a welcome change coming from an all-girl high school.3 There was never any question in my mind that I would go to a college away from home. My mother's idea, on the other hand, was just the opposite. Trying her best not to force her preferences on me, she would subtly ask whether I had considered particular schools, all of which happened to be located in or near my hometown of Chicago. Once it was established that, as long as it was financially feasible, I would be going away anyway, my family's perspective changed. Their concern shifted from whether I was going away to how far. The schools I was considering on the East Coast suddenly looked much more attractive than those in California.4 But which college I would attend was just one of what seemed like a never-ending list of unknowns: What would college be like Would I be unbearably lonely not knowing anyone else who was going to the same school Would the other students like me Would I make friends easily Would I miss my family so much that I wouldn't be able to stand it And what about the work Would I be able to keep up (Being an A student in high school seemed to offer little assurance I would be able to survive college.) What if the college I selected turned out to be a horrible mistake Would I be able to transfer to another school5 Then panic set in. My feelings took a 180-degree turn. I really didn't want to leave high school at all, and it was questionable whether I wanted to grow up after all. It had been nice being respected as a senior by the underclass students for the past year; I didn't enjoy the idea of being on the bottom rung of the ladder again.6 Despite months of anticipation, nothing could have prepared me for the impact of the actual day. As the familiar strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" echoed in the background, I looked around at the other figures in white caps and gowns as we solemnly filed into the auditorium. Tears welled up uncontrollably in my eyes, and I was consumed by a rush of sadness. As if in a daze, I rose from my seat when I heard my name called and slowly crossed the stage to receive my diploma. As I reached out my hand, I knew that I was reaching not just for a piece of paper but for a brand-new life. Exciting as the prospect of a new life seemed, it wasn't easy saying good-bye to the old one, the familiar faces, the familiar routine. I would even miss that chemistry class I wasn't particularly fond of and the long commute each day between home and school thatI abhorred. Good or bad, it was what I knew.7 That September, I was fortunate to attend a wonderful university in Providence, Rhode Island. I needn't have worried about liking it. My years there turned out to be some of the best years of my life. And as for friends, some of the friendships I formed there I still treasure today.8 Years later, financial difficulties forced my high school to close its doors for good. Although going back is impossible, it's comforting to know I can revisit my special memories any time.A. Read the following statements carefully. Some of them are true, some are not.

1 If I am the only parent who still corrects his child's English, then perhaps my son is right. To him,I am a tedious oddity: a father he is obliged to listen to and a man absorbed in the rules of grammar, which my son seems allergic to.
2 I think I got serious about this only recently when I ran into one of my former students, fresh from an excursion to Europe. "How was it?" I asked, full of earnest anticipation.
我满怀着诚挚期待问她:“欧洲之行如何?”3 She nodded three or four times, searched the heavens for the right words, and then exclaimed, "It was, like, whoa!" The civilization of Greece and the glory of Roman architecture were captured ina condensed non-statement. My student's "whoa!" was exceeded only by my head-shaking distress.没了。
Unit1What we wish我们的期望My dear child,我亲爱的孩子:You are about to participate in the next leg of yourjourney through life. For us, this part is bittersweet. As you go off to college, exciting new worlds willop en up to you. They will inspire and challenge you; you will grow in incredibl e ways.
This is also a moment of sadness. Your departure to college makes it unden iably clear thatyou are no longer a child. There has been no greater joy than watching you arrive at thismoment. You have turned our greatest challenge i nto our greatest pride. Although we havebrought you to this point, it is hardto watch you depart. Remember above all things, we willmiss you.

She has changed her major four times and is forced to hold down two part-time jobs in order to pay her tuition. She suffers from sleeping and eating disorders and has no close friends. Sometimes she bursts out crying for no apparent reason. What is happening to Lisa happens to millions of college students each year. As a result, roughly one-quarter of the student population at any time will suffer from symptoms of depression. Of that group, almost half will experience depression intense enough to call for professional help. But many reject that idea, because they don’t want people to think there’s something wrong with them. There are three reasons why today’s college students are suffering more than earlier generations. First is a weakening family support structure. Today, with high divorce rates and many parents experiencing their own psychological difficulties, the traditional familyis not always available for guidance and support.Another problem is the financial pressure. In the last decade tuition costs have skyrocketed-up about sixty-six percent at public colleges and ninety percent at private schools. At the same time there has been a cutback in the federal aid to students. College loans are much harder to obtain. Consequently, most students must work part-time. A final reason for student shock is the large selection of the majors available. Because of the magnitude and difficulty of choosing a major, college can prove a time of a great indecision. Many students switch majors. As a result, it is becoming commonplace to take five or six years to get a degree. It can be depressing to students to be faced with the added tuition cost. 1. You shoulddecide on the best choice and write the corresponding answers on Answer Sheet.Passage OneAs regards social conventions, we must say a word about the well-known English class system. This is an embarrassing subject for English people, and one they tend to be ashamed of, though during the present century class-consciousness has grown less and less, and the class system less rigid (严格的). But it still exists below the surface. Broadly speaking, it means there are two classes, the “middle class ” and the “working class ”. (We shall ignore for a moment the old “upper class ”, including the hereditary aristocracy, since it is extremely small in numbers; but some of its members have the right to sit in the House of Lords, and some newspapers take a surprising interest in their private life.) The middle class consists chiefly of well-to-do businessmen and professional people of all kinds. The working class consists chiefly of manual and unskilled workers. The most obvious difference between them is in their accent. Middle-class people use slightly varying kinds of “received pronunciation ” which is the kind of English spoken by BBC announcers and taught to overseas pupils. Typical working-class people speak in many different local accents which are generally felt to be rather ugly and uneducated. One of the biggest barriers of social equality in England is the two-class education system. To have been to a so-called “public school” immediately marks you out as one of the middle class. The middle classes tend to live a more formal life than working-class people, and are usually more cultured. Their midday meal is “lunch” and they have a rather formal evening meal called “dinner”, whereas the working man’s dinner, ifhis working hours permit, is at midday, and his smaller, late-evening meal is called supper. As we have said, however, the class system is much less rigid than it was, and for a long time it has been government policy to reduce class distinctions. Working-class students very commonly receive a university education and enter the professions, and working-class incomes have grown so much recently that the distinctions between the two classes are becoming less and less clear. However, regardless of one ’s social status, certain standards of politeness are expected of everybody, and a well-bred person is polite to everyone he meets, and treats a laborer with the same respect he gives an important businessman. Servility (奴性) inspires both embarrassment and dislike. Even the word “sir”, except in school and in certain occupations (e.g. commerce, the army etc.) sounds too servile to be commonly used.1. The middle class mainly refers to people ____.A. who were born as aristocratB. who have the right to sit in the House of LordsC. who speak in many different local accentsD. who are prosperous businessmen or who work in some professions2. The most obvious difference between the working class and the middle class in English is their _____.A. dressB. workC. accentD. meal3. Why is not the word “sir ” commonly used in Britain?A. Because it shows that the speaker is not a well-bred person.4. The “upper class ” in England today _____.A. are extremely small in number so that media pays no attention to themB. still uses old words like “Sir ” in their everyday lifeC. includes the hereditary aristocracyD. refers only to the royal familyPassage TwoToday, there are many avenues open to those who wish to continue their education. However, nearly all require some break in one ’s career in order to attend school full time.Part time education, that is, attending school at night or for one weekend a month, tends to drag the process out over time and puts the completion of a degree program out of reach of many people. Additionally, such programs require a fixed time commitment which can also impact negatively on one’s career and family time.Of the many approaches to teaching and learning, however, perhaps the most flexible and accommodating is that called distance learning. Distance learning is an educational method which allows the students the flexibility to study at his or her own pace to achieve the academic goals which are so necessary in today’s world. The time required to study may be set aside at the student’s convenience with due regardto all life’s other requirements. Additionally, the student may enroll in distance learning courses from virtually any place in the world, while continuing to pursue their chosen career. Tutorial (课程的) assistance may be available via regular airmail, telephone, facsimile machine, teleconferencing and over the Internet.Good distance learning programs are characterized by the inclusion of a subject evaluation tool with every subject. This precludes (排除) the requirement for a student to travel away from home to take a test. Another characteristic of a good distance learning program is the equivalence of the distance learning course with the same subject materials as those students taking the course on the home campus. The resultant diploma or degree should also be the same whether distance learning or on-campus study is employed. The individuality of the professor/student relationship is another characteristic of a good distance learning program. In the final analysis, a good distance learning program has a place not only for the individual student but also the corporation or business that wants to work in partnership with their employees for the educational benefit, professional development, and business growth of the organization. Sponsoring distance learning programs for their employees gives the business the advantage of retaining career-minded people while contributing to their personal and professional growth through education.1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a disadvantage of part time education?A. It requires some break in one ’s career.B. It tends to last too long for many people to complete a degree program.C. It affects one ’s career.D. It gives the student less time to share with the family.2. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of distance learning?A. The student may choose his or her own pace.B. The student may study at any time to his or her convenience.C. After all,his career had not been without distinction.Where he made his big mistake was in dying on the same day that John F.Kennedy was assassinated. As a result ,Huxley got about three column inches at the bottom of page 27. In the same way the death ofVictor Farris has gone widely unnoticed because he foolishly shuffled off this mortal coil at the same time as Mr.Konstantin Chernenko. Now,as you all know,Victor Farris was the chap who invented the paper clip. The paper milk carton too.And paper clips and milk cartons will be in use long after everyone has forgotten the name of the comrade who came between Andropov and whatever this new bloke is called. The same goes for the inventor of the supermarket trolley who died in Switzerland a few months ago. Fell off his trolley,so to speak. For all I know, he may be a household name in his own canton (区域) and they are putting up a statue of home wheeling his trolley, and are going to commemorate him on one of those ever-so-tasteful Swiss postage stamps we used to collect when we were younger and wiser, but I doubt if his name will be remembered outside the borders of his small country. Personally I forgot it within minutes of reading of his decease. Not that it matters. Somehow it is hard to imagine things like paper clips and supermarket trolleys (手推车)having had a named inventor. It ’s like discovering that at a particular moment of history a particular person invented the spoon,or the chair, or socks. One assumes that these everyday objects just happened,or evolved through natural selection. It isn ’t necessarily so. I read only the other day that Richard Ⅱ invented the handkerchief. Almost everything else was invented either by Leonardo da Vinci (scissors, bicycles, helicopters, and probably spoons, socks and the Rubik cube as well) or by Benjamin Franklin(lightning-conductor,rocking-chair,bifocals) or else by Joseph Stalin(television). It ’s quite possible that Leonardo or Benjamin Franklin or Stalin also invented the supermarket2.
