Inthewholeprocessofglobalizationthattheworldisintegra tingpolitically,economicallyandculturally,intoone,wedowitnessinourcountryagreatinfluxofwesterncultureandvalues-McDona ld’s,KFCs,soccerplayersandNBAplayers.Andwe areevenhavingthisprestigiousnationalspeakingcompetitio ninalanguagethatdoesnotbelongtous.Inthemidstofwestern productspouringinChinaasaresultofglobalization,sometimeswedowonder,wheredoesourow nculturebelong?Whenweseeouryoungergenerationsgoing awayfromtraditionalvaluessuchascontextualandrole-base dethics,idealofcommunity,hierarchy,paternalismandnon-li tigiousnatureofsociety,wemayeventhinkourtraditionalvalu esarechallengedandeventhreatened.But,arewereallylosing ourvalues?Ladiesandgentlemen,wemustremember,thetrafficofglob alizationistwo-way.Yes,filmsfromHollywood,soccerfromt heUnitedKingdomandrestaurantsfromAmerica,dohaveani mpactonourvalues.But,ifweseeglobalizationinChinaasyno nymoustermwithwesterneconomicculturalhegemony,wea reunderestimatingtheimpactofnotonlyglobalizationbutals oourvalues.Havealookatlanguages.Yes,itisthedesireanddreamofeve rysingleChinesetospeakfluentEnglish,includingeverysing leoneofushere.But,haveyoueverwonderedhowmanynon-ChinesearelearningChinese?Letmetellyou,bytheendof2002, nearly30millionpeoplefrom85countriesandregionswerele arningstandardChinese,Putonghua.Andwhoknowsaboutth enumberofpeoplelearningregionaldialectssuchas ShanghaineseandCantonese.Inthesetwoyears,Iamsuren oneofusherewillbesurprisedthatthenumberisskyrocketing. HavealookatFengShui,within0.21secondsGooglebrings you1,270,000websitesaboutFengShui,notinChinese,notfr omallovertheworld,butinEnglish,justwithintheUnitedStat es.AndIguesssomeofyoustillremember,whentheprevious Americanpresident,BillClinton,firstbecamepresident.Hea ctuallyhadthefurnitureofhisofficerearrangedaccordingtofe ngshuiideas.
