Programme Aims

Through this programme, students will pursue in-depth studies of topics that are related to their civil engineering field or broaden their knowledge of civil engineering by studying topics that are beyond their present field.

We are keen to develop students' abilities to design engineered systems or processes to meet the desired needs in civil engineering projects within realistic constraints.

Our programme is designed to cultivate students' strategic thinking skills in solving complex problems and dealing with situations pertinent to their professional practice, and to enhance their learning capabilities for continual professional development through inquiry and reflection on professional practice.

Professional Recognition

The MSc award is recognised by major professional institutions in Hong Kong. Most of our graduates have been admitted as corporate members of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Core Areas of Study

This programme offers 3 main areas of study, each covering a wide range of Core Subjects.

General Civil Engineering

• Construction Management & Law

• Quantitative Techniques in Construction Planning • Advanced Rock Engineering

• Soil Behaviour & Geotechnical Engineering • Drainage Design

Structural Engineering

• Tall Building Structures

• Advanced Reinforced Concrete

• Seismic Design of Building Structures • Wind Engineering • Facade Engineering

• Advanced Structural Design

Transportation Engineering

• Transport Management

• Urban Transport Planning - Theory & Practice@• Public Transport: Operations & Service Planning@ • Traffic Engineering & Control

• Development of Transport Infrastructures@

Individual Project/Dissertation

• Dissertation

Recommended Electives

• Construction Technology

• Statutory Framework for Construction Practice

These subjects are included in the list of reimbursable

courses for the Continuing Education Fund (CEF).

All subjects including Individual Project will be offered either in Semester 1 or Semester 2. Most Core subjects are offered in alternate years while some subjects are offered every year.Detailed information on the subjects can be obtained at

.hk/cee/#academic_programmes/postgr aduate_taught_programmes/ce/program/curriculum

@ Entrance Requirements

A Bachelor's degree with Honours in civil engineering or an equivalent qualification.

Applicants must also meet the English language requirement of the University.

Please visit .hk/study for details.

Programme Structure

This is a mixed-mode programme. Students can pursue their studies in either full-time or part-time mode. The programme will normally be completed in 1 year for full-time study or in 2.5 years for part-time study depending on the pace of study of individual student. Students are required to attend classes in both the daytime and evening if they choose the full-time mode.

A wide range of Core Subjects in the three main study areas are available for student's selection within the programme. Elective Subjects are offered under the Postgraduate Scheme in Construction and Environment. In general, each subject requires attendance of one evening per wee over a 13-week semester.

Students must complete 10 subjects (including at least 7 Core Subjects and at most 3 Elective Subjects), or 7 subjects (including at least 4 Core Subjects and at most 3 Elective Subjects), plus a 9-credit Dissertation.

Part-time students are strongly advised not to take more than 3 subjects per semester due to the heavy study load.

Medium of Instruction English

Normal Duration 1 year (Full-time) 2.5 years (Part-time)
