66By Peter Weidenhammer Fast, lightweight, and with new racing technology: right on time for the ftieth anniversary of the 911 sports-car icon, Porsche is presenting the third generation of the GT3. e Fast and the Furious o street-legal 911 is closer to racing. e GT3 essentially always has two of its wheels on the racetrack. It is pure, polar-izing, and emblematic. Around 80 percent of all 911 GT3s are also driven on racing circuits. Professionals like to explore the limits of these driving machines. At the same time, nearly all GT3s can also be found in normal road tra c, for that is one of the great special features of this small and select cir-cle of top athletes—the 911 GT3 is suitable for everyday driving; it doesn’t allow the road to be eclipsed by the track. e new GT3 is based on the body of the latest genera-tion of the 911 Carrera. is gives the two-seater that exemplary composite aluminum-steel shell which com-bines low weight with high rigidity. e new body, of course, also comes with the geometry of its chassis: a longer wheelbase and a wider track (2.1 more inches in the front, 1.2 inches in the back), both of which are also helpful for the rush around the racing circuit. e car o ers ideal conditions for superior longitudinal and lat-eral dynamics: with an additional 3.9 inches of wheel-base, the new 911 GT3 drives as if on rails at very high speeds too, while the wider front track is key in ensur-ing that the car takes curves with even greater agility and stability.N 67USWith its wheelbase lengthened by 3.9 inches,the new 911 GT3 drives as if on rails. e wider front track gives it evengreater agility and stability in curves.68and highest gear. PDK now completes gear shifts inless than one tenth of a second. It o ers all of the majordynamic driving properties of a manual transmission,supplemented by the performance bene ts of a double-clutch transmission. Its predecessor’s shift sequence hasbeen ipped to match the usual mode in racing: pullingthe paddle switch will cause the car to shift up, whereasto downshift you now have to press.e gures speak for themselves: the GT3 storms from0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, and doesn’t stop acceler-ating until 196 mph. e longitudinal dynamics by nomeans lag behind their lateral counterparts. is isthe rst GT3 in which the rear axle steers actively too.at means more dynamic turn-in performance at lowspeeds and even better driving stability at high speeds.Y et active rear-axle steering (see also “Practical Physics,”pages 70–72) is no longer the nishing touch in this su-perb strategy for driving dynamics. Its basis consists ofthe fully aluminum chassis with the PASM active sus-pension system, the wider track, the longer wheelbase,and the 20-inch wheels. Dynamic engine bearings en-sure that no unwelcome disturbances originate from theengine mass, even during fast lane changes under ex-treme conditions. And nally, the sophisticated aerody-namics and the striking rear fenders ensure a stabilizingdownforce on the front and rear axles. One more resultthat speaks for itself: the lap time on the Nordschleife ofthe Nürburgring lies under 7:30 minutes.A lot can be built on this foundation. e rst ingre-dient is a completely new engine. A six-cylinder boxerengine with 3.8 liters of displacement generates 350 kW(475 horsepower). Although based on the assembly inthe 911 Carrera S, it has practically none of the samecomponents. Changes to the design have focused inlarge part on further developing the high rpm valuescharacteristic of the 911 GT3. High rpm levels enablehigh levels of engine performance as well as a better owof power when shifting gears. If drivers make full useof the broader range of rpm, it means they have morerpm right after shifting up and the engine can put morepower immediately into acceleration. e new engineachieves this by means of racing technology which uses arocker-lever control system to open the valves in special-ly developed cylinder heads. Small moving masses canthereby enable a peak engine speed of 9,000 rpm. Allof the remaining components of the boxer engine, espe-cially the crank and valve drive, have been developed oradapted especially for the GT3. 19rmation exchange ClassicPorsche ClassicPorsche Classic Customer CentreSheet metal, plastic, paint and a high degree of manual skill – the body construction division in the Porsche customer centre Classic turns every Porsche back into a piece of jewellery.Whether the body of your classic Porsche has been damaged in an acci-dent or whether the tooth to time has gnawed at the paint and sheet metal,specialists in the Classic customer centre workshop will help you to re-move any blemishes from your vehicle.You should start by making an appoint-ment with us to have your vehicle inspected. The vehicle is normally inspected in plant 1 in Stuttgart-Zuf-fenhausen but we will also be happy to view the vehicle elsewhere. In such cases, the customer must cover the travel costs incurred. If insurance claims can be made, we also employ the serv-ices of an expert from the relevant branch of in the insurance industry.Once the vehicle has been inspected,you will receive a rough estimate of the costs from us for reference pur-poses.If necessary, we can then give you a detailed cost estimate. For this pur-pose, we strip the paint off your vehicle using a particularly gentle caustic pro-cedure. This allows the technician in the workshop to identify the full extent of the damage or corrosion more accu-rately, and this in turn allows us to give you a more detailed estimate of the scope of work required. This is performed in your presence. An insurance repre-sentative will also be present if in-surance claims can be made. If, after the cost estimate has been made, you decide to have the repair work performed in our workshop, you will not be charged for the two inspections.Now is when the work proper begins on your vehicle. Irreparably damaged or corroded body components are replaced by a mechanic using the numerous Porsche Classic originalparts available. If no suitable part is available, it is produced manually in the workshop. We can use traditional methods for this purpose as the Classic customer centre has both the neces-sary driver shapes and employees at its disposal; both have a perfect mastery of driving sheet metal. The top priority is always to retain and repair as much of the existing material as possible in order to preserve a very high degree of originality. It is perfectly clear that the customer will benefit from the many years of accumulated experience which the Porsche Classic customer centre can boast of.When all components for a vehicle which is currently being worked on have been gathered together, assembly begins. The procedures used originally are used again here. For example, the side parts of the 911 are soldered to the rear window, just like in the original.Differences in dimensions are evened out in the Classic customer centre workshop not with putty but exclusively with crenellate if the original shape can no longer be restored by hammering.The special equipment in our work-shop proves just how valuable it really is during assembly. If parts have to be re-fitted to the body or if parts which have already been fitted have to be repaired, special gauges for secure the original geometry of the vehicle in crucial places. These gauges are attached to the body and act as space holders for elements which have been removed. This prevents nasty surpris-es from occurring when the parts which were removed are re-installed and ensures that they will fit as snugly into the vehicle as before. The gauges are used in particular for Targa roofs,window frame and headlight cavities.20If the body loses its shape due to exter-nal factors, it can be restored to itsoriginal dimensions on one of ourstraightening benches. The Classiccustomer centre provides straighten-ing sets right back to the Porsche 356as well as for some Porsche modelswhich cannot be found in any otherworkshop.When work on the sheet metal hasbeen completed, the body can, ifrequested, undergo a special preser-vation treatment which is only availablefrom us. Cathodic dip painting givesthe complete metal panels a long-termanti-rust coating. This will keep yourPorsche classic free from corrosionfor many years to come. The paint isthen applied to this protective founda-tion. The basecoat, primer and paintis applied in Porsche’s own paintshopand represents the final, crowningstage in the perfect restoration or repairof your Porsche.The Classic customer centre also hascore areas of expertise in repairingand manufacturing aluminium partsand servicing GRP parts. We have allthe equipment required in order toprocess the aluminium at our disposal.It is also possible to produce aluminiumcomponents here as well and to restoredamaged parts to their original shape.If there are any faulty plastic componentsin your vehicle, that is not a problemfor us either. The Classic customercentre employs a team of people withspecial knowledge in using thesematerials. The Porsche 718 models with 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engines can now also be ordered with the seven-speed Porsche dual-clutch transmission (PDK).Both the Boxster and Cayman 718 GTS 4.0 variants, as well as the range-topping 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 models, are now available with either a seven-speed automatic PDK or a six-speed manual transmission.With PDK, there are no interruptions in acceleration during gear changes. This increases the comfort of the gear shifts and improves the acceleration values.Compared with the 718 models with the manual transmission, the 309 kW / 420 PS* (horsepower) GT models – the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 – now accelerate from 0-100 km/h half a second faster, in 3.9 seconds. They reach the 200 km/h mark in 13.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster).The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0, both with 294 kW / 400 PS* (horsepower), also improve in the standard acceleration from 0-100 km/h by half a second to 4.0 seconds, and then reach the 200 km/h mark in 13.7 seconds (0.4 seconds faster compared with the manual transmission).In the 718 GTS 4.0 models, the standard Sport Chrono package adapts the gear shift characteristics of the PDK according to the four different driving modes (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual).In Sport mode, it operates with faster gear changes, shifts down earlier with automatic throttle blips, and supports optimal acceleration with later shift points. The even more athletic Sport Plus mode is tailored for maximum performance and fully exploits the rpm reserves of the naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine. Launch Control is also integrated within Sport Plus.The Sport Response button in the centre of the mode switch allows the driver to activate maximum engine and transmission performance for 20 seconds, irrespective of the current driving mode. This motorsport-inspired function helps with overtaking manoeuvres.In the flagship 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 models, the driving mode has a characteristic that’s typical of the GT variant. I t can be programmed for maximum performance using the PDK Sport button. An automatic selector lever, which echoes the design in the 911 GT3, underlines the emotionally charged GT experience. The seventh gear of the PDK has a shorter ratio in all 718 four-litre naturally aspirated engine derivatives.In addition, the PDK versions of the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 benefit from the enhancements made to their mechanical locking rear differential: in traction and overrun modes. This achieves locking values of 30 and 37 per cent as compared with 22 and 27 per cent with the manual transmission.
