Plants and MankindBotany, the study of plants, occupies a peculiar position in the history of human kno wledge. We don't know what our Stone Age ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can observe of preindustrial societies that still exist, a detailed learning of plants and t heir properties must be extremely ancient. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously i mportant to the welfare of people, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapons, tools, dyes, medicines shelter, and many other purposes. Tribes living today in the jungle of th e Amazon recognize hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them bota ny has no name and is probably not even recognized as a special branch of "knowledge" at all.Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from dir ect contact with plants, and the less distinct our knowledge of botany grows. Yet everyon e comes unconsciously on an amazing amount of botanical knowledge, and few people wi ll fail to recognize a rose, an apple, or an orchid. When our Neolithic ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, discovered that certain grasses could be harveste d and their seeds planted for richer yields the next season, the first great step in a new a ssociation of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them flowed the marvel of agriculture: cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a littleh ere and a little there from many varieties that grew wild and the accumulated knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and intimacy with plants in the wild would b egin to fade away.16 It is logical that a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extreme ly ancient.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 People cannot survive without plants.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 Tribes living today in the jungle of the Amazon teach botany to their children at school.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 Our direct contact with plants grows with the process of industrializationA RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 Today people usually acquire a large amount of botanical knowledge from textboo ks.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 People living in the Middle East first learned to grow plants for food about 10,000 year ago.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 Once mankind began farming, they no longer had to get food from many varieties that grew wild.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned答案:16. So again and again he sent him on difficult tasks. One morning the king sent for him and told him to fetch three golden apples for him from the garden of the Singing Maidens (歌女). But no one knew where the garden was.So Hercules went away. He walked the whole day and the next day and the next. H e walked for months before he saw mountains far in the distance one fine morning. One of the mountains was in the shape of a man, with long, long legs and arms and huge shoulders and a huge head. He was holding up the sky. Hercules knew it was Atlas, the M ountain God. B2010年职称英语综合C类阅读判断考点精华(1) Will Hillary Be the Next American President?Back in 1969, US President Richard Nixon confidently predicted: “In the next 50 yea rs, we shall see a woman president, perhaps sooner than you think.”Today, not too far off Nixon‟s deadline, America is looking at that possibility. Over the weekend, Hillary Rodham Clinton, wife of former president Bill Clinton, announced he r run for 2008 presidency.US polls indicate that Americans feel comfortable with a female president. A New Y ork Times survey found nearly all Americans saying they would vote for president if she were qualified. However, accepting the theoretical notion of a female leader is quite different from v oting an actual woman. In fact, there is still widespread distrust of a woman in the top p osition. This is partly due to the biased thinking that women are weak on national security, t hough they might be strong on education and health care. This damages their prospects as a presidential contender.“There‟s still an inherent nervousness on the part of voters putting a woman in as th e ultimate decision-maker. Control of the army and border security are sorts of traditionall y male jobs,”commented Amy Walter,an American campaign analyst.“That‟s where I think voters consciously or unconsciously have difficulties with women candidates.”Women have held the top job in other major Western countries. In 1979, Britain elec ted Margaret Thatcher prime minister. Last year, Germany made Angela Merkel its first fe male chancellor. In the US, no woman has succeeded in being nominated as a presidential candidate.O ne woman did make the attempt: Elizabeth Dole. In 1999,she tried to get the Republican Party nomination. But Dole could only raise $ 5 million for her bid-compared with the $ 56 million George W.Bush raised. So Barriers lie ahead for Hillary if she wants to make history by becoming the first female US president. With the Iraqi war underway, she‟ll find it even harder.“I don‟t feel that our society is ready for a woman president. The enemy we face do es not respect females the same way we have come to see them as equals. If we were n ot in this war,I would support a woman president,”said Chris Dildy, a computer engineeri ng student.1.Up to the present, no woman has been elected president in the US.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned2.Bill Clinton will strongly support Hillary to run for the 2008 presidency.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned3.American people will elect a woman president of the United States in 2008.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned4.One of Hillary‟s campaign promises is to reform the nation‟s health care system.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned5.Germans elected a woman chancellor last year.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned6.Hillary has already raised a large anount of campaign fund.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned7.Chris Dildy will vote for Hillary.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned答案与解析:1.分析文章标题:Will Hillary(希拉里) Be the Next(下一个的) American President(总统)?2.直接解题:1.Up to the present(至今) , no woman has been elected(曾经被选为)president(总统) in the US.A.RightB.WrongC.Not mentioned1.A. 问题句说“迄今为止在美国没有一个女人曾经被选举为总统”。
