It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther K ing’s famous speech—"I Have a Dream", you may notice that he stumbles (结巴)over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for awell-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human. As you wor k on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.1.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will .A.be smarter than youB. know what you are talking aboutC.do better than youD. notice your mistakes2.You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because .A. you find the way of speech-making more importantB. you don’t fully understand the speechC. you don’t know what the speaker p lans to sayD. your attention is on the content3.From the last two paragraphs, the author means that .A. giving a speech is like giving a performanceB. the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is madeC.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad。

The ground is white. The day is June 10.It has been snowing for the past four days in the BitterrootMountains. Wayne Fairchild is getting worried about our trek over the Lolo Trail95 miles from Lolo Montana to Weippe in Idaho, across the roughest country in the West. Lewis and Clark were nearly defeated 200 years ago by snowstorms on the Lolo. Today Fairchild is nervously checking the weather reports. He has agreed to take me across the toughest, middle section of the trail. When Lewis climbed on top of Lemhi Pass, 140 miles south of Missoula, on Aug.12, 1805, he was astonished by what was in front of him; “high mountain chains still to the West of us with their tops partially covered with snow.” Nobody in what was then the US knew the Rocky Mountains existed, with peaks twice as high as anything in the Appalachians back East.Today their pathway through those mountains holds more attraction than any other ground over which they traveled, for its raw wilderness is an evidence to the character of two cultures: the explorers who braved its hardships and the Native Americans who prize and conserve the path as a sacred (神圣的) gift. It remains today the same condition as when Lewis and Clark walked it.The Lolo is passable only from July to midSeptember. Our luck is holding with the weather, although the snow keeps getting deeper. As we climb to Indian Post Office, the highest point on the trail at 7,033 ft, we have covered 13 miles in soft snow, and we hardly have enough energy to make dinner. After a meal of chicken, I sit on a rock on top of the ridge (山脊). There is no light visible in any direction, not even another campfire. For four days we do not see another human being. We are occupied with the things that mix fear with joy. In our imagination we have finally caught up with Lewis and Clark.1.We learn from the text that before 1805 ________.A.the Rocky Mountains were wholly covered with snow B.there were no people living in the western part of AmericaC.no Americans knew of the existence of the Rocky MountainsD.the Appalachians were the western frontier of the United States答案:C 细节理解题。

(2018·长春七校第一次联考)There is a popular saying in the English language:“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, that is not true.Unkind words, namecalling or even the socalled “the silent treatment” can hurt children as much as being physically hit, sometimes even more so.A recent study of middle school children showed that verbal(言语的) abuse by other children can harm development in the brain. The study was a project of researchers at Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts.Researcher Martin Teicher and his team studied young adults, aged 18 to 25.These young men and women had not ever been treated in a cruel or violent way by their parents. The researchers asked the young people to rate their childhood exposure to verbal abuse from both parents and other children. Then the researchers performed imaging tests on the brains of the subjects. The images showed that the people who reported suffering verbal abuse from peers in middle school had underdeveloped connections between the left and right side of the brain. The two sides of the brain are connected by a large bundle of connecting fibers called the corpus callosum. This was the area that was underdeveloped. The middle school years are a time when these brain connections are developing. So, unkind, hurtful comments from children or adults during this period have the greatest effect. The researchers tested the mental and emotional condition of all the young people in the study. The tests showed that this same group of people had higher levels of fear, depression, anger and drug abuse than others in the study. The researchers published their findings online on the American Journal of Psychiatry’s website.Parents cannot control what other people say to their children, but they can prepare their children.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文。

The power of nature李仕才一、阅读理解On Christmas Eve, 1944, my grandmother urged my uncle, then 12 years old, to slip out of the concentration camp where they were imprisoned near 15 miles east of Vienna to go to Deutsch-Wagram. “People are charitable around Christmastime,” Grandma Lili said to her son, Gyuri. “Ask for some food. Anything they can spare. Tell them that we’re on the edge of starvation. Tell them that your 3-year-old sister can not get off the bed because she’s outgrown her shoes.”In the dark of that night, Gyuri secretly left the camp and walked nearly four miles to Deutsch-Wagram, the closest town. He happened upon a house and knocked on the front door. A woman opened that door. She was probably alone, her man far away, fighting in the war, her children asleep in their beds. The 12-year-old pieced together in German exactly what his mother had told him to say.“Come back tomorrow," whispered the woman. The next day, my uncle returned. The woman opened the door with a smile. She piled his hands with bread, clothing, a pair of shoes that her child had outgrown and a pair of socks. The woman had knitted warm socks for my mother. After putting on the socks and shoes that fit, my mother got off the bed in delight. Her ragged shoes were passed on to a younger child who was also living in the camp. They shared their unexpected harvest with the entire camp. It was a quiet celebration of human kindness around Christmastime. In April 1945, my mother, uncle and grandmother were liberated. And it was those very socks and shoes that my mother wore as she walked some 28 miles over two days to Bratislava on her walk to a new life.To the unknown giver, I thank you. In the desperation of a cold and snowy land, when many hearts were closed and death was more likely than life, especially for Jews, you gave them hope and comfort.1.What did Gyuri manage to do on Christmas Eve?A. Get permitted to go out.B. Receive food and clothing.C. Express what his family needed.D. Celebrate Christmas in the camp2.Why does the author mention shoes so many times?A. 选修6 Unit 5 The power of nature李仕才一、阅读理解Nowadays, especially in China, everything seems to favor social intercourse, such as gatherings of friends, KTV, group travel, dining tighter, playing cards and Mahjong, plus the Chinese-style “street-crossing gro up.” Back home, discussions can still be boisterously carried on within the “circle of friends” of WeChat. However, these scenes cannot always ease a sense of loneliness. Zhu Ziqing, a well-known professor of Tsinghua University, signed with emotion: “My l oneliness increases as scene becomes much busier.” One popular song today is also called “A lonely man in crowds.” Actually, engaging in social intercourse requires ability, while being alone involves the whole character. These days, it is not easy to calm down totally and return to one’s true self. Willpower, intellect and discipline are required. Einstein said: “It is not your working time but your spare time that determines the possibility of whether you will be successful or not.” The “spare time” he referred to could be taken as “spending time by yourself.”Lonely life could be either dull, boring and tasteless or abundant, interesting and colorful, depending on one’s quality, ambition and inspiration.Just as the body constantly requires energy, the mind and soul also demand unceasing inputs. However, information, to processed and integrated(融入)into knowledge, thoughts and feelings, instead of bustle(忙碌)seems to be the right condition. Successful careers in all walks of life worldwide have proved that “the soul grows in peace and talent is nurtured in loneliness”. In a sense, it may be reasonable to say that “Happiness tends to be shallow while loneliness involves profundity”.Man, in fact, needs loneliness more than happy time, and only abundant loneliness can produce quality happiness.1.Which of the following can replace the underlined the word “boisterously” inparagraph 1?A. surprisinglyB. sadlyC. busilyD. peacefully2.What can we infer from the second paragraph?A. Being alone marks people depressed.B. Social intercourse improves our happiness.C. One may feel lonely even when surrounded by peopleD. We should attend social intercourse to decrease our loneliness.3.What can we know from Einstein’s words?A. You should be successful if you spend all your time by yourself.B. You should exercise more if you want to keep your minds healthy.C. You will not become successful if you join in more social intercourse.D. You will be more successful if you can make your lonely time meaningful.4.Which may be the best title for this passage?A. Live On Your OwnB. Happiness and LonelinessC. The secret of successD. You’re in your office when you learn there’s someone with a gun wandering outside. You can hear gunshots and screams. What do you do?That’s the challenge for users of a new virtual (虚拟)reality program called SurviVR, designed to train employees how to deal with an active shooter situation in the workplace. The program works with HTC Vive, the virtual reality headset released earlier this year.An active shooter situation is when an armed person or people actively shoot in a small, populated area with the intention to kill. There were 20 such situations in the United States last year and 20 the year before, according to FBI statistics, resulting in a total of 231 deaths. This year saw the deadliest active shooter situation in US history, with 49 people killed in a nightclub in Orlando. In the training situation, users have four choices. They can lock themselves in the office. They can hide, perhaps in the office closet. They can run for an exit. Or they can use something in the office—a computer or a cup a pair of scissors-as a weapon to fight the shooter. This is an improvement on standard active shooter training. Gallo says, which typically teachers people to lock themselves in place and hide. The "lock down" method is often ineffective, he says, and has resulted in many deaths in recent years. In the training’s basic level, no one gets killed. But as the trainings become more advanced, players who make a wrong choice be shot. There’s no blood; the screen simply turns black slowly. If this sounds terrifying, that’s the point, says Gallo. There are plenty of training programs to teach employees how to deal with workplace violence, sometimes involving role play with toy guns. But these trainings are basically games. Gallo says, with employees relaxed and even enjoying themselves. To teach people what they really need to know for an active shooter situation, they need to be scared."SurviVR will take the fear and turn it into confidence." Gallo says.1. What’s the author’s pur pose of describing a dangerous scene in Para. 1?A. To attract the readers’ attention on the new virtual reality program.B. To show the challenge that the readers are required to face.C. To warn the readers of the possible dangers in the working place.D. To inform the readers of the correct response in such a situation2. What is the suggested response in the standard active shooter training?A. Fighting the shooterB. Running for the exitC. Using a computer as a weaponD. Locking down3. What does Gallo think of the training programs involving role play with toy guns?A. SearingB. ViolentC. IneffectiveD. Helpful4. What would be the best title?A. Unit 5 The power of nature课时作业Ⅰ.阅读理解(2019·河北黄骅中学模拟)Of all nature 's disasters, forest fires are often considered the most frightening.Moving at lightning speed, huge walls of flames can burn acres of land in just a few minutes. And although technology, including the use of fire-retardant chemicals, has greatly helped the fight against forest fires, they still do great damage.According to the National Interagency Fire Center, the fire season last year was the worst on record in terms of the number of fires and acres burned. There were 96.385 fires and 9.873429 acres affected by fire in a year that was125% more destructive(毁灭性的) than the10-year average. These fires cost the federal government $1.5 billion to fight, and this figure does not include the money spent by local and state governments as part of the effort.Fires in the southern states represented half of the national total last year with Texas,Oklahoma and Arkansas being home to a usually high amount of activity.Wildfire has also taken place in Western states such as California,Colorado and Alaska throughout the past 10 years. It is said that two-thirds of forest fires are started accidentally by people.Almost one quarter are purposely set, while lighting causes 10%.Forest fires can have advantageous effects.Charcoal(木炭)enriches soil and some plant species(种类) grow well after fire. The cones of the jack pine tree, for example, will not spread their seeds unless there is heat.Douglas fir trees grow best in open sunlight areas after fire.【语篇解读】本文主要讲了森林火灾被认为是最令人害怕的,因为它们蔓延得太快,造成的损失太巨大。

Unit 5 The power of natureⅠ.阅读理解AWe all know the feeling of walking into an air-conditioned office building on a hot summer day. It’s 94℉outside. It’s 64℉ inside. Suddenly, you need a knit sweater just to sit at your desk. I know someone who used to bring a space heater to work — i n August.Aside from being uncomfortable, this is horrifically inefficient. The low hum of the air conditioner is the sound of coal being burned and money being spent to make you miserable at work. BuildingIQ is trying to change that. Their secret weapon? Machine learning. The company has developed cloud-based software that gathers information about a building and uses it to build a thermal model (热模型). That model can predict how much or how little energy is needed to keep the people inside comfortable by analyzing factors like indoor temperature and pressure, electricity consumption, the weather forecast, the price of electricity, and therefore tailors heating and air conditioning for maximum energy efficiency. Thanks to a recent cooperation, BuildingIQ will soon take human preferences into account. Changes to heating and air conditioning are always influenced by the limits of human comfort, and those limits vary from person to person. This data will be added into the thermal model. Imagine a retirement home where the occupants are always too cold. If the system knows this, it will reduce the air conditioning in the summer to keep grandma and grandpa nice and warm. How well does it work? BuildingIQ says it regularly saves between 10 and 25 percent on heating and air conditioning, the two items that make up 50 or 60 percent of a building’s total energy use. The software will help cut energy bills and improve comfort all while reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. It won’t be long before you can leave your space heater at home.1. In Paragraph 1, the author intends to .A. complain about the coldness in air-conditioned officesB. describe the harmful effects of an unhealthy lifestyleC. criticize some people’s u nawareness to save energyD. indicate the low efficiency of the old way of air conditioning2. According to the article, what does the “thermal model” do?A. Gathering information about a building’s history.B. Learning about machines that heat a building.C. Predicting the amount of air conditioning needed.D. Analyzing the physical fitness of people inside.3. The underlined word “tailor” can be best replaced by .A. limitB. adjustC. expandD. prevent4. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?A. BuildingIQ is going to be experimented at retirement homes.B. BuildingIQ will also analyze human temperature preferences.C. People have different preferences for temperature and comfort.D. The limits of human comfort vary and change at different ages.BRainforests, it turns out, are not created equal. Take the Amazon rainforest, an area that covers about 7 million square kilometers. But within that huge expanse are all kinds of ecological zones, and some of these zones, says Greg Asner, are a lot more crowded than others.“Some forests have many species of trees,” he said, “others have few. Many forests are unique from others in terms of their overall species composition…” And all of these different small areas of forest exist within the giant space that is the Amazon Rainforest. So Asner, using the signature technique called airborne laser-guided imaging spectroscopy, began to map these different zones from the air. “By mapping the traits of tropical forests from above,” he explains,“we are, for the first time, able to understand how forest composition varies geographically.”The results show up in multicolored maps, with each color representing different kinds of species, different kinds of trees, the different kinds of chemical they are producing and using, and even the amount of biodiversity, the animal and plant species that live within each zone.Armed with this information, Asner says decision-makers now have “a first-time way to decide whether any given forest geography is protected well enough or not. If not, then new protections can be put in place to save a given forest from destruction.”Asner says the information is a great way for decision-makers to develop a “cost-benefit ratio type analysis.” Conservation efforts can be expensive, so armed with this information, government leaders can ensure they are making the most of their conservation dollars by focusing on areas that are the most biologically diverse or unique. The next step, Asner says, is to take his project global, and to put his eyes even higher in the sky, on orbital satellites. “The technique we developed and applied to map Peru is ready to go global.” Asner said. “We want to put the required instrumentation on an Earth-orbiting satellite, to map the planet e very month, which will give the best possible view of how the world’s biodiversity is changing, and where to put much needed protections.5. Unequally-created rainforests refer to the fact______.A. how crowded they areB. where they are locatedC. when they came into beingD. what kinds of species they have6. What can government leaders learn from Asner’s mapping?A. The cost to conserve forestsB. The chemicals needing for certain forestsC. The forest areas needing special protectionD. The number of animals living in a forest7. What is Asner planning to do now?A. To send a satellite to map the worldB. To track the change of biodiversity in the worldC. To develop technology for mapping the globeD. To advertise his project around the world8. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Using eyes in the sky to map biodiversityB. Making a map of big forests in the worldC. Learning about the biodiversity of Amazon forestD. Protecting the forest from being destructed.Ⅱ.完形填空One day after school I was just finishing up some math homework. My dad came back from work and sat right beside me, 1 over my homework with me. A New Virtual Reality Program on Active Shooter TrainingB. What Should You Do When Meeting Gunshots in the Workplace?C. How to Deal with an Active Shooter Situation?D. Employees Need to Be Scared of the Workplace Violence.【语篇解读】文章介绍一种新的主动射击训练虚拟现实程序,教人们遇到办公室暴力犯罪的时候如何应对。

To prove the truth of the story.B. To help the development of the story.C. To attract readers’ attention to the story.D. To make clear the background of the story.3.What feeling did the author write the text with?A. DesperationB. Gratefulness.C. ExcitementD. Sorrow.4.What is the passage mainly about?A. Light in darknessB. Peace to common peopleC. Courage in face of dangerD. The influence of Christmas【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。
