Skills and Learning StatementACCA Registration number: xxxxxxxTotal word count: 1,989First of all, I am feeling so excited to write this statement. It means I’ve completed the most of the work of the research and analysis report. It’s time for me to review the whole process from preparation to proofreading. I’m willing to share my experience with a majority of students to help them prepare the report, especially for topic 18.According to the Information Pack (IP), I will make a summary of the following four questions.Question 1. Reflect on what you have learnt from the meetings with your Mentor, including the presentation that you gave to your Mentor?Answer: I divide the communication with my mentor into four stages.1) PreparationAbout two weeks before the first meeting, I got contacted with my mentor. She left me a message about what to prepare for our first meeting. In this message, she told me to read information pack carefully, set two or three target topics and target companies, think about personal strength and weakness, etc. This text message is a good start as it set up my trust in the mentor. It also built a basic framework of the work I need do.2) The first meetingOur conversation started with an introduction to IP. Since I already read the IP and listed the questions on the paper. After mentor’s general introduction, she answered my questions one by one. Most of them were common questions about information gathering approaches, analysis methods and format requirements.Then we began to discuss a more important issue, selection of topic and target company. My mentor asked my working background. I told her that I was working in a medical device company. I expressed my great interest on Mindray, who is the most successful domestic manufacturer in the MedTech industry. Analysis on Mindray is valuable to my company. She agreed with my idea.But in the choice of the topic, I was hesitant. I was interested in topic 8, 16 and 18. But topic 8 has the limitation on subject. Students can only use sector-specific organisations, based on the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB). They are airlines, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology and mobile telecommunications for period 33 & 34. I did download the ICB from the internet to check whether Mindray was on the list but the answer was no. My mentor confirmed later that medical device was out of the range. If I insisted on Mindray, I had to change the topic. She also toldme that topic 16 required more internal information than topic 18. After careful consideration, I finally decided to write topic 18.At the end of the meeting, we made a timetable together. My mentor asked my ACCA learning progress and available time to write this report. After considering my situation, she advised me to prepare at least four months, two months for information gathering, one month for drafting and one month for modification and correction.3) The second meetingThis meeting took place three days after I sent the first draft to my mentor. Basically, my written work contributed towards meeting the RAP aims and objectives, but the structure was not appropriate. Each part of the analysis seemed reasonable, while it was strange to put all these sections together. She strongly suggested me to redesign the structure of the article, so that the reader could better understand what I wanted to express. Moreover, I used too much literature review in part 2 but ignored the viewpoint I wanted to convey to the readers. On the other hand, each chapter didn’t have a summary which didn’t conform to the Western reading pattern. My mentor is very conscientious and responsible. I believed as long as I worked out the problems she pointed out, I could get through the review.4) The third meetingMy first presentation draft was not focused on the objective but focused on the research approach, which didn’t comply with the IP’s instruction. My mentor explained the authoritative requirement to me. After two revisions, my third edition finally got her approval. It is now consistent with the content of RAP. Another outstanding problem was involving long-winded text description, which was fixed later. I used more tables or photographs to instead.Except for the three meetings, I had a lot of contacts with my mentor. She ever sent me an email regarding the reference which was an important part of the RAP. She told me to put the spreadsheet as the appendix and submit together with RAP. Any ratio analysis without calculation formula was meaningless. She also reminded me to perform a grammar checker as English was not my mother language. Overall, my mentor gave me a lot of help, setting up my confidence in the completion of this report.I appreciate her time and guidance so much.Question 2. To what extent do you think you have achieved the RAP research objectives you set?Answer: The purpose of studying Mindray’s marketing strategy is to uncover the veil of its success. The conclusion and recommendation formed in the report will give directive significance on our company's future strategy.My research and analysis were conducted from three aspects.1) The analysis of external environment and internal environment were performedthrough PEST model and Porter’s five forces model. Both of these two models needed substantial information to form an opinion. I’ve read many journal and news to enrich my knowledge of the macro environment, industry and Mindray.But in the report, I only listed the most relevant information for the word count limits.2) I analysed the marketing strategy of Mindray from the aspects of product, place,promotion and price. 4Ps is the most common theory I learned from ACCA P3.The entire analysis basis was public market information. I had to admit that some non-disclosure strategy might be more influential. But they were normally insider information which would cause confidentiality problem. So I didn’t discuss about them in the report. The information about the price and product was relatively transparent, which could be learnt from the annual report and public tender. The information about the promotion was apparent too as Mindray was active in the exhibition, forum and media platforms. By contrast, the information of the distribution channel was very limited. They were mainly obtained from the Mindray’s employee, so the authenticity and accuracy were questionable. There’s no other reliable channel can corroborate the distribution channel.3) Regarding the analysis of market strategy, I evaluated the effectiveness throughratio analysis and SWOT model. I selected the top three foreign brands in China as the comparators. I didn’t choose any domestic company for the difference in market position. Mindray targeted to the international market, while most domestics companies were only active in China market. There’s no clear provision about how many companies should be used as the comparators. I selected three to have an overall picture of Mindray’s competitiveness and operation efficiency.Indeed, the comparator comparison results gave impactful judgment basis.On the whole, I was satisfied with my research process and results. I achieved the research objectives I set. At the end of the report, I could answer all the questions raised at the beginning. But there's some regret in the RAP. First, my actual work is greater than the presentation of the paper for word-length limitation. Second, for some marketing strategies, I didn’t dip deeper in the report for confidentiality concerns. Third, no similar domestic enterprises can be set as the comparator. In addition to these, the paper is comprehensive and realistic.Question 3. How have you demonstrated your interpersonal and communication skills during the project work?Answer: The primary communication method between my mentor and me is chat software, followed by email. Every time I had any new idea, I recorded it on the notebook immediately. Some questions could be solved in the course of the research,but some questions I need comments or clarification from my mentor. I sent the notes to my mentor once I week, then she could understand my progress and confusion quickly. This method can effectively organise my thoughts, avoid asking the same question and save my mentor’s time.Many of the illustrations in my paper were generated by Excel. There were some charts which I didn’t know how to generate, and then I learned from my coworker who was specialised in the tab. As a result, to complete this paper, my Excel skills have been greatly improved.I am used to making an agent before each telephone meeting. After completing the meeting, I customarily made a memorandum. These records reminded me the key points. They also made our communication more smooth and complete.The PPT presentation, as a summary introduction, is an important part of my report. I understand well that the presentation must be finished in 15 minutes. So I demonstrated several times before the formal introduction. To make the PPT concise and readable, I mainly used keywords and tables with a simple declaration. I made a speech draft to record all the words which I would say to present the PPT. The speech draft was modified again and again until I felt satisfied.In general, the good work habits made my mentor feel satisfied for our communication. When I write this skills and learning statement, it is not a hard job to recall the process.I have plenty of documents to use for reference.Question 4. Reflect on how undertaking the RAP helped you in your accountancy studies and/or current employment role?Answer: Undertaking the RAP requires a comprehensive knowledge and skills of various disciplines. I chose the topic 18, which required environment analysis target to the industry and ratio analysis focus on the company. The harvest of this paper is mainly reflected in the following three aspects.1) In real life, I am doing the international trading in medical device industry. Thebusiness analysis should be my advantage, but I only got 61% marks in the ACCA P3 exam. During writing this report, I suddenly realised that my logic for business was not as clear as I thought. My mentor ever pointed out the irrationalities of the report structure. When I reviewed the textbook and more cases from the internet, I reconstructed the perspective of business analysis.2) Because the objective is my company’s main competitor, we are operating in thesame industry. The in-depth analysis of the macro market and industry environment will contribute to my company’s market positioning. Mindray, as the leading company in this industry, its market strategy and latest movements ismeaningful to us. By comparing with Mindray's strengths and weaknesses, we could conclude the direction of efforts. The opportunities and threats identified in the report will lead to Mindray’s future marketing strategy, as well as ours. On the other hand, I can learn from Mindray’s successful experience and failure stories.Success may not be copied, but mistakes could be prevented. More important, I could understand why it made such strategy under what background.3) My company is currently looking for financing. I was asked to issue business planbecause of my ACCA background. The analysis and business techniques I used in this RAP are also common skills to write the business plan. Like RAP, the business plan starts from the macro environment to industry competitiveness, then discussing the company’s strength and ends at the strategy plan. Except for the analysing ability, the presentation skill is also vital. How to make the PPT understandable and attractive, which will highly affect the interests of investors.In summary, the RAP created the opportunity to use my knowledge from ACCA study into a real case. What I gain from this process is more than learning a new course.In the end, please allow me to thank my mentor again for her help throughout the research.
