2015. 11. 07Part I Reading Comprehension(30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Jim Thorpe was a Native American. He was born in 1888 in an Indian Territory(印第安人保护区)that is now Oklahoma. Like most Native American children then, he liked to fish, hunt, swim, and play games outdoors. (76) He was healthy and strong, but he had very little formal education. In 1950, Jim Thorpe was named the greatest American football player. He was also an Olympic gold medal winner. But Thorpe had many tragedies in his life.Jim had a twin brother who died when he was nine years old. By the time he was 16, his mother and father were also dead, Jim then went to a special school in Pennsylvania for Native American children. There, he learned to read and write and also began to play sports. Jim was poor, so he left school for two years to earn some money. During this time, he played on a baseball team. (77)The team paid him only $15 a week. Soon he returned to school to complete his education. Jim was a star athlete (运动员) in several sports, including baseball, running, and football. He won many awards for his athletic ability, mainly for football. In many games, he scored all or most of the points for his team.In 1912, when Jim Thorpe was 24 years old, he became part of the U.S Olympic team. He competed in two very difficult events: the pentathlon and the decathlon. Both require great ability and strength. The pentathlon has five track and filed events, including the long jump and the 1500-meter race. The decathlon has ten track and field events, with running, jumping and throwing contests.People thought it was impossible for an athlete to compete in both the pentathlon and the decathlon. So everyone was surprised when Thorpe won gold medals in both events. When the King of Sweden presented Thorpe with his two gold medals, he said, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.” Thorpe was a simple and honest man. He just answered, “Thanks, King.”1. Some Asian locations serve fried shrimp in a Big Mac roll, while McDonald’s in India doesn’t serve beef at all, relying instead on burgers made from vegetables, rice and beans. Not everyone in the world has been happy to greet Ronald McDonald when he moves to town. Many see McDonald's as a symbol of American economic and cultural chauvinism(沙文主义), and European nations in particular have viewed American-style fast food as an insult to their national food.A French farmer, Jose Bove, became something of a national hero in 1999 after he and a group of people destroyed a McDonald's under construction to protest globalization and "bad food." The next year, a bomb exploded in a French McDonald’s, killing a 27-year-old employee. (78) No one claimed responsibility. But regardless of whether you like their food or their policies, McDonald’s is still widely seen as one of the true pioneers of peaceful globalization.6. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT TRUE.A. McDonald's was founded in 1948.B. McDonald’s has opened its restaurants in every city of the world.C. What did Jose Bove and his people do in 1999 to protest against McDonald's?A. They organized a strike.B. They protested outside a McDonald’s.C. They refused to go to a newly-built McDonald’s.D. They destroyed a McDonald’s under con struction.10. In ____, an employee died in a fatal bomb attack on a McDonald’s restaurant in France.A. 1998B. 1999C. 2000D. 2001Passage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:It can be really frustrating (使人沮丧的) for an overweight person to go to a gym and work out with a positive attitude. All one has to do is walk by almost any nice gym and notice all the healthy, sweating, “skinny” members. Sometimes they stare at those of us who are, well, zaftig. It is easy to see the judgment behind their eyes. Who wants to put up with that? Many people are self-conscious of their bodies and feel isolated when joining workout classes of while exercising, especially if they are larger than most of the others in the group. Now the fitness industry is finally paying attention. Popular gyms are catering (迎合) to overweight and weight conscious customers by dedicating areas where the “skinny” people are not allowed. There are even gyms or programs that require members to be at least 50 pounds overweight to participate.Trainers recommend functional fitness as a practical goal, rather than six-pack abs(六块腹肌).(79)They often use text messages to stay in touch with customers.Often at these specialized gyms, the trainers are overweight themselves, or working on their own weight goals, and this can help those people with anxiety caused by poor body image. The equipmenthas been designed for use by larger people. Wider seats, more cushioning, no mirrors, and tinted (有色的) windows for privacy, are all important changes.(80)Hopefully these types of gyms will successfully grow in numbers in the future.

In recent years, the prevalence of computer games has exerted a significant effect on children’s life. As to whether they affect children negatively, there is an endless debate.Despite the fact that playing computer games is an effective way to relieve pressure, the problems associated with study and health cannot be neglected.Clearly, playing computer games is regarded as a main factor leading to poor academic performance. With the entertaining nature, computer games will easily distract children from their studious pursuits. With the passage of time, children will probably fall behind their peers in academic development. In addition, when children spend too much time playing computer games, they are less likely to participate in physical activities, which is one reason why many children suffer from obesity. As a result, these overweight children’s confidence may be undermined and their health may be negatively influence as well.Despite these disadvantages, the advantages can still not be ignored. First of all, the latest research shows that game-playing helps children to home their communication and interpersonal skills. In many cases, players work together in teams to achieve goals, competing against other players. Therefore, their social skills and teamwork spirit are put to the test. Also, computer games can have positive and therapeutic effects on players. Games provide an opportunity for children to decompress and tune out of strains and stresses of everyday life. Giving their time to rest is critical for emotional and mental well-being.In conclusion, it is not advisable for children to play computer games, for the reasons that it not only has a negative impact on their study, but also makes them lose confidence, although computer games provide a form of relaxation. Some people think governments should focus on reducing environmental pollution and housing problems to help people prevent illness and disease.
The bar chart shows three kinds of fruit and the amount exported to different countries in 2012.
Word count (189)The bar chart compares the amounts of certain exported fruit in the corresponding countries whose export was top three in the year of 2012.As can be seen from the chart, oranges were the most popular exported fruit. More specifically, South African was the country where the largest number of oranges wasexported, amounting to 1020. This was followed by Egypt (500) and United States, which exported the smallest number of oranges among the three countries.Lemon was the second popular fruit in the four categories, with 500 exported by Mexico and 200 exported by USA. The minimal export amount belonged to Argentina (100).In terms of grapefruits, the type of fruit which did not constitute the large proportion of the exported fruit, Turkey was the main country that transported grapefruits to most of other countries, while Mexico and United States exported 400 and 300 respectively. In the group of other kinds of exported fruit, the largest export volume can be seen in Mexico. The other two countries only accounted for a tiny proportion of the whole volume.Overall, the export quantities of different fruit vary among different countries.B卷:Task 1题型:线图分析:第二套试卷中的小作文是最近已经出现N遍的线图,主要是讲述了英国的三种婚姻状况的变化趋势。
A: School leavers go travelling or work before they go directly to university. Are there more advantages or disadvantage on their study?B: For school children, their teachers have more influence on their intelligence and social development than their parents. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Before the beginning of university, students who wish to continue with their education face two probable choices - either suspend their study for a year to obtain work and travel experience, or go directly into university. I will analyze the pros and cons of these two choices below.A year’s time to work or travel before university has been popular among young people in recent years. In fact, students can obtain several good points by doing this. To begin with, students can enhance their life skills and maintain a balance between their studies and work from the one year experience. They will become more independent during this meaningful process. Also, they can indentify career preference and areas of interests during travelling, which will help them to decide their major in university. However, one year’s work or travel also has its obvious disadvantages. Coming fresh out of high school, students do not have a clear understanding of the harsh realities of the world. They are not in a strong position to undertake early employment. Besides, young people are not able to make a correct career decision. Choosing a career requires sufficient knowledge of one’s own strengths, aptitudes and the trends in job market. Most young adults lack such knowledge. Moreover, travelling and working will divert young people’s attention from their previous objectives. If students give up the opportunity of beingeducated and pursue other ventures, they will lose their willpower to learn something carefully and patiently. The side effect of disengagement from schooling might not be significant in the first several years, but it will surly disadvantages them a lot in a long run.To conclude, work or travel before university has its advantages and disadvantage. In fact, the disadvantages outweigh advantages.B卷观点分析(提纲):若支持老师影响大的理由:智力:学生在学校接受知识主要受到老师影响; mainly gain knowledge from their teachers 社会发展方面:好的老师能够提供好的社会资源,有助于学生在学术和职业道路上的发展; social resources, pave the way for students’future career path若支持父母影响大的理由:智力:基因决定力,智商由父母给的天赋决定;mainly depend on genes from parents 社会发展方面:从小耳濡目染,熟悉父母的职业圈子和工作方式更容易上手和成功; influenced by parents' occupation, familiar with, easier to get involve in and obtain success.
