张剑曾鸣编著《英语阅读理解150篇》Part ADirections:Read the following four texts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text 1No t long after the telephone was invented, I assume, a call was placed. The caller was a parent saying, “your child is bullying my child, and I want it stopped!” The bully's parent replied, “you must have the wrong number. My child is a little angel.”A trillion phone calls later, the conversation is the same. When children are teased or tyrannized, the parental impulse is to grab the phone and rant. But these days, as studies in the U.S. show bullying on the rise and parental supervision on the decline, researchers who study bullying say that calling moms and dads is more futile than ever. Such calls often lead to playground recriminations and don't really teach our kids any lessons about how to navigate the world and resolve conflicts. When you call parents, you want them to “extract the cruelty”from their bullying children, says Laura Kavesh, a child psychologist in Evanston, Illinois. “But many parents are blown away by the idea of their child being cruel. They won t believe it.”In a recent police department survey in Oak Harbor, Washington, 89% of local high school students said they had engaged in bullying behavior. Yet only 18% of parents thought their children would act as bullies. In a new U.S.PTA survey, 5% of parents support contacting other parents to deal with bullying. But many educators warn that those conversations can be misinterpreted, causing tempers to flare. Instead, they say, parents should get objective outsiders, like principals, to mediate.Meanwhile, if you get a call from a parent who is angry about your child's bullying, listen without getting defensive. That's what Laura McHugh of Castro Valley, California, did when a caller told her that her then 13-year-old son had spit in another boy's food. Her son had confessed, but the victim's mom “wanted to make sure my son hadn't given her son a nasty disease,” says McHugh, who apologized and promised to get her son tested for AIDS and other diseases. She knew the chance of contracting any disease this way was remote, but her promise calmed the mother and showed McHugh's son that his bad behaviour was being taken seriously. McHugh, founder of Parents Coach Kids, a group that teaches parenting skills, sent the mom the test results. All were negative.Remember: once you make a call, you might not like what you hear. If you have an itchy dialing finger, resist temptation. Put it in your pocket. ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL Reading ComprehensionAlexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on March 3, 1847. When he was only eleven years old, he invented a machine that could clean wheat. Graham studied anatomy and physiology at the University of London but moved with his family to Quebec, Canada, in 1870.Bell soon moved to Boston, Massachusetts. In 1871, he began working with deaf people and published the system of Visible Speech that was developed by his father. Visible Speech illustrated how the tongue, lips, and throat are used to produce vocal sounds. In 1872, Bell founded a school for the deaf, which soon became part of Boston University.Alexander Graham Bell is best known for his invention of the telephone. While trying to discover the secret of transmitting multiple messages on a single wire, Bell heard the sound of a plucked string along some of the electrical wire. One of Bell's assistants, Thomas A. Watson, was trying to reactivate a telephone transmitter. After hearing the sound, Bell believed he could send the sound of a human voice over the wire. After receiving a patent on March 7, 1876, for transmitting sound along a single wire, he successfully transmitted human speech on March 10. Bell's telephone patent was one of the most valuable patents ever issued. He started the Bell Telephone Company in 1877.Bell went on to invent a precursor to the modern-day air conditioner and a device called a "photophone" that enabled sound to be transmitted on a beam of light. Today's fiber optic and laser communication systems are based on Bell's photophone research. In 1898, Alexander Graham Bell and his son-in-law took over the National Geographic Society and built it into one of the most recognized magazines in the world. Bell also helped found Science Magazine, one of the most respected research journals in the world.Alexander Graham Bell died August 2, 1922. 商务英语中级考试阅读理解一、商务英语中级考试阅读理解You can’t buy happiness but it looks like you can at least inherit it, British and Australian researchers said.A study of nearly 1000 pairs of identical and non-identicaltwins found genes control half the personality traits that make people happy while factors such as relationships, health and careers are responsible for the rest of our well-being."We found that around half the differences in happiness were genetic," said Tim Bates, a researcher at the University of Edinburgh who led the study. "It is really quite surprising."The researchers asked the volunteers – ranging in age from 25to 75 – a series of questions about their personality, how much they worried and how satisfied they were with their lives.Because identical twins share the same genes and fraternal twins do not, the researchers could identify common genes that result incertain personality traits and predispose people to happiness.People who are sociable, active, stable, hardworking and conscientious tend to be happier, the researchers reported in thejournal Psychological Science."What this study showed was that the identical twins in a family were very similar in personality and in well-being, and by contrast, the fraternal twins were only around half as similar," Bates said. "That strongly implicates genes."The findings are an important piece of the puzzle forresearchers trying to better understand depression and what makes different people happy or unhappy, Bates said.People with positive inherited personality traits may, in effect, also have a reserve of happiness to draw on in stressful times, he said."An important implication is that personality traits of being outgoing, calm and reliable provide a resource, we called it ’affecti ve reserve,’ that drives future happiness" Bates said.快乐买不到,但英国和澳大利亚的研究人员称,快乐至少可以遗传得到。

One time, when I was serv ing food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so q uickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always resp ect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, w ho happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how s ensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description “old”. I then walked ba ck to the table and apologized to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they unders tood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no lo nger angry. In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and e xperience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn fr om their rich experience. However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” s hows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many pe ople try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and w omen put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant tha t I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. The body and mind work together, the patient has fun, and the results are extremely encouraging. The Wii is also helping a growing number of seniors around the world. In retirement communities and nursing homes, seniors are discovering how much fun Wii games are to play. And therapists are noting the physical and mental benefits. Wii games like bowling help improve motor skills and hand-eye coordination. This can lead to improved mobility. Perhaps even more important, Wii games increase social contact among seniors. In many nursing homes, seniors compete with each other or with staff members in one-on-one competitions or even tournaments. Edward the Confessor, who ruled England from 1042 to 1066, was likely the first English king to assemble this collection of jeweled ornaments. And over the centuries, they have had a remarkable history. At various times, the Crown Jewels have been lost, sold or altered by England’s kings and queens. In 1649, they suffered their worst fate when England’s new ruler, Oliver Cromwell, had them destroyed as despised symbols of imperial power. Since then, they have been kept under armed guard whenever they are not in use.Today, the Crown Jewels are only used on the grandest state occasions. The rest of the time, they are kept on display in the Tower of London, where visitors can see them in the Jewel House. Many of the new features are aimed at improving safety on the road. Some of these safety features are already built into expensive car models. Others are still under development but should show up in new models soon. Here are five of the most important features.(1) Tire pressure system. Sensors on the wheels of the car monitor the air pressure in the tires. If the air pressure in any tire falls too low, the driver is alerted bya warning sound.(2) Run-flat tires. These high-tech tires don’t have to be changed immediately after they suffer damage. In fact, a driver can continue to drive for up to 50 miles after a run-flat tire goes flat. This allows the driver to reach a repair shop or other suitable location for changing the tire.(3) Lane-departure system. This type of system detects when the driver is beginning to change lanes. It then warns him or her of any danger from approaching vehicles.(4) Emergency brake system. This system detects when the driver is making a panic stop. It then applies extra braking power to stop the car quickly.(5) Rear camera system. A rear camera works with the navigation system in the car. He enjoyed demonstrating the latter for his many guests.Since 1998, Robert-Houdin’s mansion has been home to the Maison de la Magie, one of the world’s finest museums of magic. Today, many of Robert-Houdin’s magic acts are on display in the museum. In keeping with tradition, however, the secrets to his illusions are never revealed.
