Unit 5 The power of natureⅠ.阅读理解[2017·广东高三适应性测试]From my earlier memory of Mother,it somehow seemed quite natural to think of her as different, not of everyday things as Father was.In those days he was a young -looking man.He did not hesitate to make friends with children as soon as they were able to talk to him and laugh at his stories.Mother was older than he was.She must have been a woman of nearly forty, but she seemed even older. She changed little for a long time, showing no indication of growing old at all until, towards the end of her life, she suddenly became an old lady.I was always inquisitive about Mother's age.She never had birthdays like other people, nor did anyone else in our family. No candles were ever lit or cakes made or presents given in our house. To my friends in the street who talked delightfully about their birthday parties,I would repeat my Mother's words that such celebrations were only foolish.“Nothing but deception,” she would say.“As though life can be marked by birthdays. It's deeds, not years, that matter.”Although I often repeated her words and even prided myself on not having birthdays,I once could not help asking Mother when she was born.“I was born.I'm alive as you can see,so what more do you want to know?” she replied,so sharply that I never asked her about her age again. In so many other ways Mother was different.Whereas all the rest of the women I knew in the neighboring houses took pride in their housewifely abilities, their new furniture, the neat appearance of their homes,Mother regarded all those things as of little importance. Our house always looked as if we had just moved in or were about to move out.1.How did Father impress the author?A.He liked writing stories.B.He loved making friends.C.He was a very young man.D.He was popular with children.2.Before the end of her life,Mother__________.A.looked quite youngB.looked like an old ladyC.looked younger than she wasD.looked like a forty-year-old woman3.What does the word “inquisitive” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A.Certain. B.Curious.C.Cautious. D.Confident.4.What do we learn about Mother?A.She was lazy. B.She was strict.C.She was proud. D.She was special.答案:[解题导语]本文依托作者小时候对妈妈的记忆讲述了一个在外貌、性格、对待年龄的态度和家庭生活方面都与众不同的妈妈。
课时作业(二十三)Ⅰ.阅读理解[2017·内蒙古包头二模]For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smart phones,a web of information is open to them.According to a new report, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 15 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.Julian Zeitlinger,9,from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him.“I ask my parents whether something is nice or bad,” Julian says.Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands.A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.Have you ever had to enter a parent's e-mail address when signing up for a website? That safety measure is there because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent's permission. This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 when there were no smart phones.“The nature of the way kids get online has changed,”FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said. When the changes take effect,COPPA will apply to mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs, and services that give users' location.COPPA doesn't cover everything that can go wrong online. That is why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and thinkbefore sharing information online.“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA,it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs KidSAFE,which checks whether a site meets KidSAFE standards and is safe.“It's important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it also can be dangerous if you are not careful.” he adds.1.Julian's parents check his web use to make sure__________.A.he doesn't watch too many videosB.he doesn't play computer gamesC.he controls his online timeD.he stays safe on the Internet2.What's one of the changes with COPPA?A.It broadens the concept of person information.B.It prevents users from making their location public.C.It covers everything that goes wrong online.D.It says no to any kind of advertising.3.People often hold the wrong idea that__________.A.formal websites are always safeB.the Internet is becoming safer and saferC.COPPA can ensure their complete safetyD.daily checks prevent future online problems4.Why does the author write the passage?A.To ask parents to look out for their kids.B.To talk about online safety for children.C.To introduce a new law.D.To sell an online product.答案:[解题导语]本文是说明文,主要介绍了儿童上网的安全问题及COPPA 网络安保法案的成因、发展等特征。
课时作业(二十五)Ⅰ.阅读理解[2017·湖南岳阳高三质检]I was fairly new to this particular school since my parents only moved to the area. There wasa boy, who,as it turned out,was an orphan and was living and working for a small farming family. He didn't appear at first glance to ever be fully engaged (专注) in the school learning process;he would sit quietly, never seem to get any attention from the teacher, and would spend a lot of time staring out of the window just behind him.Over the next few weeks,I got to know this boy while playing outside in the schoolyard playing baseball or soccer. He was very athletic and very good at anything we played.I started to wonder why he didn't seem to do well in school and why the teacher ignored him.He told me he had been in several foster (收养) homes since he was a little boy and that most of his time in the last few years had always been on farms. He said he was made to work before he went to school and as soon as he got home until it was time for bed.He was never given a chance to go out and play, nor was he allowed to have any friends although he told me he really didn't have any friends anyway, because he was an orphan and they did not want anything to do with him.I had never before been acquainted with prejudice of any kind. Here was one characteristic ofa human being who through no fault of his own carried a label (标签) that prevented him from even having friends as a child. His potential was also being ignored by the teacher. It wasn't that he couldn't learn,or didn't want to—it was because he wasn't encouraged or in some cases, allowed to.We may all meet people through the years that we tend to apply labels to without really taking the time to get to know them,to discover their real potential because our vision is clouded by how we always put people into pigeon_holes that we are used to or comfortable with.1.What was the first impression that the boy gave the author?A.He was a troublemaker in class.B.He was not drawn into learning.C.He often played outside in the schoolyard.D.He tried to get his teacher's attention.2.The main idea of the third paragraph is ________.A.how the boy became homelessB.that the boy's family was very poorC.why the boy didn't have any friendsD.who made the boy work day and night3.The boy's potential was ignored because________.A.he worked hardB.he liked playing baseballC.he was athleticD.he was an orphan4.What does “pigeon holes” in the last paragraph refer to?A.Specific categories. Unit 5 First aidⅠ.阅读理解A(2017·河北石家庄检测二)I grew up in a family that ate dinner together every evening. Although my parents enjoyed wine, they rarely drank during the week and were always in moderation (节制). As for myself, I wasn't interested in alcoholic drinks and neither were my high school friends. So when I arrived on campus for my first year of university life, I was a bit shocked. Many different events had been organized for the freshmen, but they all had one thing in common —alcohol, and plenty of it. Not wanting to be left out, I joined a few of the events. But I always returned home early, feeling disappointed. Your personality, interests and experiences didn't matter at all, only how many alcoholic drinks you could absorb before passing out (喝醉). It seemed shallow to me I wanted to get to know my new classmates, not how fast they could down a pint of beer.Gradually, however,I realized that real friends don't judge you by how much you can drink and there were other ways of making friends. I joined a photography society, took a first aid course, and every weekend I went cycling with a classmate. I found that by engaging in these activities and sharing the fun of learning new skills together in a group, I formed much stronger bonds with my new friends than even the strongest alcoholic drinks could encourage.Another valuable lesson I learned is that it's perfectly okay to say “No” if you don't want to drink. However, in many Western societies, especially the UK, binge drinking (狂喝) has become the norm. Many people who drink don't necessarily want to, but they give in to the peer pressure (同伴压力) —they're afraid to say “No”.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文,作者讲述了大学时期,面对很多纵酒狂饮的同学自己如何说“不”的经历。
