Appreciation for To Autumn
To Autumn is not only a poem written by John Keats, but also a painting of autumn in countryside drawn by him with his words.
At the beginning, Keats describes autumn as season of mists. At the last lines, he describes the scenery of the sunset with rosy hue. In this way, we can clearly find that Keats shows us a painting of the scenery of countryside in the daytime and decorates the poem with beautiful beginning and ending.
And the scenery is divided into three parts. The first part is the mature crops. In the second part, we can see busy farm work by hard working farmers. And the last part, is full of the sounds or songs by animals.
In the first part, fruits appear under the cover of mists. Slowly comes the sunshine, then the mask of morning is break and uncovered. More corps comes out. The vines full of grapes, apples, gourd, and the hazel shells.
In the second part, farmers are not directly mentioned. But through or behind the lines, we can see those busy figures of them. Their footsteps are spread in the store, on a granary floor, on a half-reaped furrow, next to the poppies, across a brook and by a cyder-press. With the lines, time slowly passes. The page of farmers and the page of daytime is turning.
Finally comes the third part, because farmer have all returned home to rest, music by animals are everywhere. Small gnats mourn, lambs, hedge-crickets, a garden-croft and
twitter, they together sing a song for the closing of an autumn day.
From the morning till to dawn, the scenery of countryside is showed to us with clear structure and wonderful harmony.
In addition to the scenery and structure, this poem also has beautiful rhymes. It is easy to find is that the last words of the third and second from last lines in each part, have the end rhyme. In this point, those series of things listed out are end with rhythmic lines, which achieves the impact of making the poem in a subtle order.
The last part of my appreciation is the usage of the sense in this poem.
We can see the milky mist, purple grapes between green wines and red apples, brown hazel. It is a fruitful autumn but also a colorful autumn. We can also touch the granary floor, the half-reaped furrow where farmers relax themselves and feel the wind passing by and flowing beneath our skin. Not just vision and touch, there is also sense of hearing. The mourn, lambs, twitter and so on, appear in the poem when sunset is coming.
This is an environment where all kinds of sounds made by animals can be heard, concluding those slight sounds. So this is an environment quiet enough for people to listen carefully and smooth the brows. It is time for relaxation, while the misty morning is time for starting a day.。
