The French shake hands with everyone(family, children, strangers), at home, on the way to work, at work, on leaving work, on the way home from work, etc. Thus, in an office , perhaps a dozen people, no work will be done for the first half hour while 41 who have not met since the day before, remind each other who they are. However, it is important to remember with whom one has shaken hands on any one day. The French 42 it as extremely bad manners to shake hands twice, as though one had not taken enough 43 for the first time.It is still the 44 to say ―Bonjour‖ and ―Au revoir‖ to others when entering or leaving a shop or bar. This is not because the French are too 45 . It is because they see acknowledging(注意) the existence of others as a way of 46 being rude. This may seem unbearably slight to others, but to the French it is most important. Manners mean civilization to them.Kissing is not so much of a(n) 47 of French life as others supposed. But when it does take place, it must be done 48 , according to the rules. The 49 order is left cheek, right cheek, left cheek---very formal, very stylized. In Paris four kisses are sometimes permitted: left, right, left, right.Ⅲ.Reading ComprehensionSection ADirections: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B,C and D. But if you had been around 15,000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests like the Amazon might have reacted to the cold dry climates of the ice ages, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.Rainforests like the Amazon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Currently the trees in the Amazon take in around 500 million tones of CO2 each year: equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the UK each year. But how will the Amazon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2? Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past.Unfortunately, getting into the Amazon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. To study past climate, scientists need to look at fossilized pollen(花粉), kept in lake mud. Going back to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lake sediments(沉淀物), which requires specialize equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled. So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go back to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amazon rainforest reacts to climate change.72.The underlined phrase ―mopping up‖ in the second paragraph means_____.A.cleaning up B.taking in C.sending off D.giving out73.How will the Amazon rainforest react to future climate change?A.It’ll get drier and continue to remove CO2B.It’ll remain steamy, warm, damp and thick.C.It’ll continue to help slow global warming.D.There is no exact answer up to present.74.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?A.There is little information to study the past climate.B.It’s impossible to prove how climate changes in the Amazon rainforest.C.It’s hard to collect information for studies of the past climate in the Amazon rainforest.上海市2009届高三年级第一次十四校联考英语试题- 6 -D.It’s necessary to have specialized equipment and machinery to study the past climate.75.The best title for this passage may probably be__ ___.A.the History of the Rainforests B.Climates of the AmazonC.Secrets of the Rainforests D.Changes of the Rainforests(D)Children are in need of adoption because some birth parents are unable or unavailable to provide adequately for the needs of their child. There are numerous reasons for making an adoption plan. Birth parents may feel they cannot take on responsibility of an unplanned child because they are too young or because they are financially or emotionally unable to provide proper care. They do not feel ready or able to be good parents. In other cases children are in need of adoption because courts have decided that their birth parents are unable to function adequately. Many of these children are victims of abuse or neglect. Regardless of how children come to need adoption, they are put with adoptive parents through private or public social service agencies. Other adoptions may be arranged independently, as when birth parents and adoptive parents come to know each other outside of an agency and then complete the adoption according to the laws and regulations of their states of residence. In the early 1970s there was a dramatic increase n the number of families seeking to adopt, a condition which persists today. For this reason, the number of those who wish to adopt regularly exceeds(超过)the number of infants available. Reasons for this dramatic increase are varied. A major factor has been the choice of many people to delay the start of a family until later in life. Many of these people, in turn, have found themselves to be less fertile at that time, and so they have decided that their desire to have children might best be fulfilled through adoption. In every state, however, there are children who are legally free to be adopted but are desperately waiting for parents. The children in this group are usually older and often have special needs. They may require additional care from a parent because of their physical, emotional, or mental disabilities (which may have been caused by abuse, neglect, or medical or genetic factors). Because of their special needs, these children are challenging to rear. In fact, adoption experts believe that people who adopt these children need special training and preparation in order to successfully rear the child and to integrate(使融入) the child into the family and eventually into society. In cases of international adoption, Americans have adopted orphaned children from places like Korea, India, and Latin America. United States immigration laws allow such children to reside in the United States through a special visa under which the children are classified as immediate relatives of the adopting family. The laws, regulations, and attitudes toward international add option vary a great deal from one country to another. Because of this, people wishing to adopt should use experienced agencies or organizations in order to adopt a child from another country successfully.76.What is the most important reason for the adoption boom in the 1970s?A.Adoption came into fashion among young American couples then.B.Many women shoes adoption for fear that their figure might be affected after bearing.C.Many people who married late found they were less fertile.D.The government carried out family planning and many people had to adopt children.77.By saying ―there are children who are legally free to be adopted but are desperately waiting for parents‖, the author suggests that .A.few people would like to adopt these children for they are hard to raiseB.the children were eager to be loved by their birth parentsC.some people would like to adopt them, but these children prefer their birth parentsD.their birth parent s abandoned them but don’t like other people to adopt them78.According to the passage, international adoption .A.occurs more often than adoption of American infants上海市2009届高三年级第一次十四校联考英语试题- 7 -B.mostly involves European orphansC.should be done through experienced agenciesD.should be banned right away79.What is the author’s primary concern of writing this passage?A.To tell how to adopt a child.B.To tell why and how Americans adopt children.C.To tell the history of child adoption.D.To tell the significance of adopting children.Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.A.How to deal with listening practiceB.Class atmosphere matters a lot in learningC.Monitoring activities is one of the main tasks of teachersD.How to evaluate student performanceE.Group work needs organizing properlyF.Communication skills play a big role in language learningBoth instructors and learners can get benefits from the following learning strategies as long as they are properly made use of in language learning.80.The information presented in this section focuses on specific conversation, discussion, or presentation skills. The activities are generally self-explanatory, with students expressing opinions, making decisions, solving problems, planning presentations, and so on. Engaged in these activities, students have the possibility of communicating with each other in class. This section also includes lists of expressions used to illustrate different language functions, such as agreeing, disagreeing, and asking for clarity in order to help students expand their knowledge of English.81.In a speaking or listening course, students’ anxieties can affect their learning. For this reason, it is important to establish a friendly, relaxed classroom environment. It may help students to think of the classroom as a laboratory where they can experiment and take risks with the language. In such circumstances, students should realize that errors are a natural and expected part of learning a language. In addition, one of the goals of this part is to encourage students to examine their own opinions and values while at the same time showing respect for the opinions and values of others.82.Many of the activities in this section involve the students’ cooperating work in class. Generally, such an activity taken up by four members seem to work the best. Groups of three or five members may also be effective, depending on the activity. The first unit includes guidelines for organizing group work, with students taking on the following roles: leader, reader, summarizer, reporter, and observer(if necessary). Organizing all activities in this way makes the course truly learner-centered since students must take full responsibility for carrying out each activity. As for seating, group members should arrange their seats or chairs in a small circle to encourage上海市2009届高三年级第一次十四校联考英语试题- 8 -interaction.83.Being a teacher, in the course of group activities, you should circulate from group to group, which helps ensure that students are on task and are using English. While you should not participate in pair or group activities, you need to stay involved in what the students are doing. One important reason to circulate during activities is to keep track of the kinds of problems students have, such as grammatical accuracy, fluency, word choice, pronunciation and intonation, discussion strategies, etc. However, it is generally not effective to correct students’ errors when they are involved in an activity The most practical way to deal with communication problems is to make notes of what you observe as you are circulating. You can then use this information to provide feedback after the activity or to develop future lessons.84.At the beginning of the course, when they need to build up their confidence, students benefit most from encouragement and positive comment. If possible, you’d rather not grade the students’ first few efforts at speaking in a group or to the class. Many students suffer such anxiety in speaking situations that any criticism at this stage can have the opposite effects. Commenting on students’ work does not necessarily mean grading them on the scene Even if the programs requires formal grades, you should try to put off assigning grades until later in the term.第Ⅱ卷(共45分)I.TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets.1.那些女孩的粗心大意让她们付出了生命的代价。

They wanted my brother and me to get a head start on that long road to financial stability. Two years earlier my parents had helped me open my first bank account, and now my mother was introducing me to mutual funds. An enthusiastic pupil, I was soon contributing income from my paper route towards my investments. Then, later, as a high-school student with university on the horizon, I began to wonder how I could possibly afford the $2,200-a-year tuition. I had decided to major in sciences, with the aim of going on to medical school. In other words, there were a lot of years of tuition ahead of me.Clearly, it was time to step up my investing planning. I read investment magazines carefully and thoroughly for money-making advice. My comfort level grew, as did my investment. At the end of high school, I was able to pay for my university tuition. In fact, the proceeds of that investment supported me much of the way through medical school.Since Mom’s first chat nearly two decades ago, I have come a long way as an investor. Above all, I have seen firsthand how smart investing can help you reach important goals in life. It’s partly thanks to the good financial habits I picked up as a child that I’m enjoying a medical residency in Edmonton today — thanks, in other words, to my money-wise Mom and Dad.72. Success comes from financial stability(D)Scientists estimate that more than 60 percent of cancer deaths in the United States are preventable through lifestyle changes. Although there is no certain way to avoid all cancers, reducing individual risk factors significantly decreases the likelihood of getting many forms of this dangerous disease. The American Chemical Society estimates that smoking causes nearly 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States — that is, about 166,000 cancer deaths each year. All cancer deaths caused by tobacco smoking could be prevented completely by not smoking and not using smokeless tobacco. For those who already smoke, quitting will reduce the risk of developing cancer. Studies show that after about ten ye ars of not smoking, a past smoker’s risk lowers to about the level of those who have never smoked. After quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet is the best way to lower the risk of cancer. Certain foods have been found to protect against cancer. Among these foods are cabbage, tomatoes, soy products, and foods high in vitamins A, C, and E. In addition, green and possibly black teas contain compounds that protect the body from cancer-causing substance. To lower cancer risk, diets should include little or no red meat. Other foods to avoid orconsume in moderation include sugar, fat from animal products, and salt. Added fats and oils should come from vegetables, such as olives or corn, rather than from animal sources. Carbohydrates (碳水化合物) should come from whole grains, such as brown rice and whole wheat bread, rather than from processed foods, such as white rice and white bread. The risk of cancer of the esophagus (食道) increases with heavy alcohol consumption, and many studies suggest that consuming alcoholic drinks increases the risk of breast cancer as well. Studies show that limiting intake to two drinks a day for men, and one drink per day for women, reduces cancer risk.Low levels of physical activity have been implicated (牵连) in some cancer. Moderate activity for 30 minutes a day enhances the immune system, shortens the time food takes to move through the intestines (肠), and changes body composition and hormone levels. Researchers are studying how these effects might lower cancer risk.76. Which do you think is the best title for this passage?A. Lifestyle and DiseaseB. Tips for Cancer PreventionC. Causes of CancersD. How do We Remain Healthy?77. Which of the following is true according to the author?A. Those who have quitted smoking for 10 years and non-smokers have the same cancer risk .B. Once a smoker has stopped smoking, there is almost no chance of getting cancers.C. A balanced diet is absolutely effective in preventing one from getting cancer.D. A person drinking tea regularly will not be likely to suffer from cancer.78. What kind of people increase their chances of getting cancers?A. Their food contains less sugar, animal fat, and salt.B. One who is not moderate in drinking and eating.C. Those who have one or two drinks regularly and enjoy doing so with their families.D. Those whose diet contains a lot of red meat and not a little fruit.79. The last paragraph implies that ______.A. Food's staying in one's body for too long a time might be related to a kind of cancerB. Exercise can consume more whole grainsC. 30 minutes' physical activity is good for ordinary peopleD. Plenty of physical exercise is most important for one to remain healthySection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.A. A careful analysis biologicallyB. What is global warming?C. Solution to the terrifying resultD. Greater danger of extinctionE. Many shocking things were found.F. A shocking report80.The earth is getting warmer. People burn coal, oil and gas and this produces carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. These gases, called ―greenhouse gases‖, prevent the heat of the su n from leaving the earth’s upper atmosphere and this makes the earth warmer.81.A few weeks ago a group of scientists produced a report about global warming and the natural world. They wanted to find out if global warming was dangerous for plants and animals. According to what they found, the scientists say that during the next 50 years about 25% of land animals and plants will become extinct. More than a million plant and animal species will be extinct by 2050.82. More than 10% of all plants and animals will become extinct. It is too late to save many plants and animals because of the greenhouse gases that are already in the atmosphere. But the scientists say if we control greenhouse gases now, we could save many more plants and animals from extinction.83.The scientists studied some regions of the world with a very rich biology. These regions were Europe, Australia, Central and South America, and South Africa. Their studies showed that species living in mountainous areas had a better chance of survival because they could move uphill, to get cooler. In flat areas, such as deserts, plants and animals would have to move a very long distance to get cooler, so they are in greater danger of extinction.84.The scientists found that half of the 24 species of butterflies they studied in Australia would soon become extinct. 60% of the species in the Kruger National Park in South Africa would also die out, and more than 100% of the 300 South Africa plant species they studied would also become extinct. One of the plants in danger of extinction is the national flower of South Africa, the King Protea. They studied 163 tree species in the Cerrado region of Brazil and found that 70 would become extinct. Many of the plants and trees that live in this region live nowhere else in the world. In Mexico, they studied 1,870 species and found that more than 30% of these were in danger of extinction.第II 卷(共45分)I. If you‟ve come to ski or snowboard,we‟ll see you on the slopes. Skiing is a locals‟ favorite too. While you‟re here, try other recreational activities available in our mountains. Popular choices include a Banff Gondola ride up Sulphur Mountain, bathe in the natural mineral waters at the Upper Hot Spring, horse-drawn sleigh ride, drive-your-own-team dog sled excursion, and snowmobile tour to the highland (but not in the national park). We also recommend you make time to enjoy simple pleasure. After looking around Banff Aveshops, walk a couple of blocks west or south to the scenic BowRiver.Try ice skating on frozen Lake Louise where Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition works are displayed after Jan 25. You can rent skates in Banff or at the sport shop in the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel.Banff‟s backcountry paths access a wilderness world of silence and matchless beauty—cross country skis and snowshoes provide the means. Banff sport shops rent equipment and clothes, or join an organized tour. Although we‟ve been many time s, we still find the cliffs and icefalls of our frozen canyons worth visiting.Wildlife watching also creates satisfying memories. We have seen hundreds of the elk and bighorn sheep that attract visitors, yet they still arouse a sense of wonder. And the rare spotting of a cougar, wolf or woodland caribou takes our breath away.See if simple pleasures work for you. Fight in the snow with your kids, walk beside a stream or climb to a high place and admire the view.—Banff Resort Guide Editors69. According to the passage, Banff‟s backcountry is accessible by _____.(C)“Get your hands off me, I have been stolen,” the laptop, a portable computer, shouted. That is a new solution to laptop computer theft: a program that lets owners give their property a voice when it has been taken. The program allows users to display alerts on the missing computer‟s screen and even to set a spoken message. Tracking software for stolen laptops has been on the market for some time, but this is thought to be the first that allows owners to give the thief a piece of their mind.Owners must report their laptop missing by logging on to a website, which sends a message to the model: a red and yellow “lost or stolen” banner pops up on its screen when it is started. Under the latest version(版本) of the software, users can also send a spoken message. The message can be set to reappear every 30 seconds, no matter how many times the thief closes it. “One customer sent a message saying, …You are being tracked. I am right at your door‟,” said Carrie Hafeman, chief executive of the company which produces the program, Retriever. In the latest version, people can add a spoken message. The default through the comput er‟s speakers is: “Help, this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, please report me now.”The Retriever software package, which costs $29.95 (£21) but has a free trial period, has the functions of many security software programs. Owners can remotely switch to an alternative password prompt if they fear that the thief has also got hold of the access details. If a thief accesses the internet with the stolen laptop, Retriever will collect information on the internet service provider in use, so that the police can be alerted to its location.Thousands of laptops are stolen every year from homes and offices, but with the use of laptops increasing, the number stolen while their owners are out and about has been rising sharply.Other security software allows users to erase data remotely or lock down the computer.72. The expression “to give the thief a piece of their mind” can be understood as “_______”.74. One function of the program is that it allows the owner to ______ at a distance.A. change some access details for switching on the laptopB. turn on the laptop by using the original passwordC. operate the laptop by means of an alternative passwordD. erase the information kept in the stolen laptop75. Which of the following can best summarize the main idea of the passage?A. With no Retriever, thousands of laptops are stolen every year.B. A new software provides a means to reduce laptop theft.C. Retriever has helped to find thieves and lost computers.D. A new program offers a communication platform with the thief.(D)The latest research suggests a more prosaic, democratic, even puritanical view of the world. The key factor separating geniuses from the m erely accomplished is not a divine spark. It‟s not I.Q., a generally bad predictor of success, even in realms like chess. Instead, it‟s deliberate practice. Top performers spend more hours (many more hours) rigorously practicing their craft. If you wanted to picture how a typical genius might develop, you‟d take a girl who possessed a slightly above average verbal ability. It wouldn‟t have to be a big talent, just enough so that she might gain some sense of distinction. Then you would want her to meet, say, a novelist, who coincidentally shared some similar biographical traits. Maybe the writer was from the same town, had the same ethnic background, or, shared the same birthday. This contact would give the girl a vision of her future self. It would give her some idea of a fascinating circle she might someday join. It would also help if one of her parents died when she was 12, giving her a strong sense of insecurity and fueling a desperate need for success. Armed with this ambition, she would read novels and life stories of writers without end. This would give her a primary knowledge of her field. She‟d be able to see new writing in deeper ways and quickly perceive its inner workings. Then she would practice writing. Her practice would be slow, painstaking and error-focused. By practicing in this way, she delays the automatizing process. Her mind wants to turn conscious, newly learned skills into unconscious, automatically performed skills. By practicing slowly, by breaking skills down into tiny parts and repeating, she forces the brain to internalize a better pattern of performance. Then she would find an adviser who would provide a constant stream of feedback, viewing her performance from the outside, correcting the smallest errors, pushing her to take on tougher challenges. By now she is redoing problems—how do I get characters into a room—dozens and dozens of times. She is establishing habits of thought she can call upon in order to understand or solve future problems. The primary trait she possesses is not so me mysterious genius. It‟s the ability to develop a purposeful, laborious and boring practice routine. The latest research takes some of the magic out of great achievement. But it underlines a fact that is often neglected. Public discussion is affected by genetics and what we‟re “hard-wired” to do. And it‟s true that genes play a role in our capabilities. But the brain is also very plastic. We construct ourselves through behavior.76. The passage mainly deals with _____.77. By reading novels and writers‟ stories, the girl could ______.A. come to understand the inner structure of writingB. join a fascinating circle of writers somedayC. share with a novelist her likes and dislikesD. learn from the living examples to establish a sense of security78. In the girl‟s long painstaking training process, _____.A. her adviser forms a primary challenging force to her successB. her writing turns into an automatic pattern of performanceC. she acquires the magic of some great achievementsD. she comes to realize she is “hard-wired” to write79. What can be concluded from the passage?A. A fuelling ambition plays a leading role in one‟s success.B. A responsible adviser is more important than the knowledge of writing.C. As to the growth of a genius, I.Q. doesn‟t matter, but just his/her efforts.D. What really matters is what you do rather than who you are.Section CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph.
短对话部分和以往没有太大的变化,仍以考察捕捉信息为主,例如第一题中说到“The line is busy”, 另一人则说“Why not order through theInternet”, 这时的关键信息Internet与选项C中的online正好吻合;第二,三两题是听力短对话中的常见提问“what king of person” 以及“where”,这两题需抓住几个关键词“race”, “finishing line”, “mail”,“delivery”等词。
第四,九题则更多考察对个别句子的理解。
比如“It’s up to you”, “forget about it if it doesn’t clear up”. 第五题是需一点逻辑推断的,说到“I was about to take a shower when the telephone rang”, 那么再联系“the floor is wet”, 可以推出没关水就去接电话了。
第六题则更侧重语气,“You can’t be serious!”, 体现了不顾考试去参加party是荒唐的。
第八题是偏向于虚拟语气的测试,“You should have come earlier.”

That’s what happened when a young man, the son of a star baseball player, was drafted by one of the minor league teams. As hard as he tried, his first season was disappointing, and by midseason he expected to be released any day.The coaches were puzzled by his failure because he possessed all the characteristics of an excellent athlete, but he couldn’t seem to incorporate those advan tages into an effective effort. He seemed to have become disconnected from his potential. His future seemed darkest one day when he had already struck out his first time at bat. Then he stepped up to the batter’s box again and quickly ran up two strikes. The catcher called a time-out and ran to the pitcher’s(投手)for a conference. While they were busy the judge, standing behind the plate, spoke casually to the boy. Then play resumed, the next pitch was thrown and the young man knocked it out of the park. That was the turning point. From then on, he played the game with a new confidence and power that quickly drew the attention of the parent team, and he was called up to the majors. On the day he was leaving for the city, one of his coaches asked him what had caused such a turnaround. The young man replied it was the encouraging remark the judge had made that day when his baseball career had seemed lost.“He told me I reminded him of all the times he had stood behind my dad in the batter’s box,” the boy explained. “He said I was holding the bat just the way Dad had held it. And he told me, ‘I can see his genes in you; you have your father’s arms. ’ After that, whether I swung the bat, I jus imagined I was using Dad’s arms instead of my own. ”65. Physical inactivity accounts for as many as 23 percent of all deaths from major recurring diseases, yet almost one of every three Americans tends to sit about without taking much exercise. According to the Centers for Disease Control(CCD), 29. 4 percent of those surveyed report no leisure-time physical activity at all. City residents tend to be more active than country folks, with 27. 4 percent saying they are unmovable, compared with 36. 6 percent of those in rural areas. Westerners also are more active than Americans in other regions.Even light exercise---activity that increases oxygen consumption less than three times the level burned by the body at rest---can improve physical and mental well-being. While light activity is good, moderate is even better, and health experts encourage everyone to accumulate at least 30 minutes a day of moderate physical activity. But you don’t have to head to a gym. As recent studies have confirmed, “lifestyle” activities, such as walking, houseclean ing, and gardening, are as effective as a structured exercise program in improving heart function, lowering blood pressure, and maintaining or losing weight. In one study, overweight, unmovable middle-aged men and women who learned behavioral skills to make them more physically active(such as walking around airports or train stations while waiting for a departure)reduced their body fat percentage and improved their blood pressure and heart function as much as individuals participating in structured programs at a fitness center. In another study, fat women ranging in age from 21 to 60 who adopted a more active lifestyle lost as much weight as women in a low-impact aerobics(有氧健身法)program---and regained fewer pounds in the following year.Recognizing the value of different levels and types of activity, the American College of Sports Medicine has changed its recommendations on quantity and quality of exercise to include flexibility as well as aerobics and muscle workouts and to acknowledge that multiple short periods of exercise during the day are nearly as beneficial as one long session.72. Based on the passage, we can assume that______.A. outdoor activities can improve our physical health greatlyB. when we take part in exercise, less oxygen is taken inC. “lifestyle” activities can build our bodies and prevent us from getting too fatD. people of different ages and sex like sports which help them lose weight73. Temporary exercise is beneficial.B. Flexibility used to be discouraged.C. Lifestyle activities are encouraged.D. It concludes the list fails to reflect the true threat to species, by not taking full account of the threat caused by people. The Red List, which is made by the world conservation Union(IUCN), determines a species’ risk of extinction mainly on the basis of its population size, rate of decline and geographic range. But Alexander Harcourt and Sean Parks at the University of California, Davis, argue that this is not enough. They compare an endangered species to a house that has been left unlocked. The house is exposed to committing theft, but it only becomes threatened when there is a housebreaker nearby. In the same way, a small population of animals with likely extinction only becomes actively threatened when it is being caught illegally or its habitat is destroyed. Harcourt and Parks support modifying the Red List standards to include local human population density.Although a large number of people nearby may not in itself be a threat, they argue that hunting, pollution and habitat destruction, for example, are all likely to increase as people gradually attack wildlife. What’s more, data on human density is really available. “We have the numbers, why not use them?” says Harcourt. To illustrate their point, the researchers reassessed 200primate(灵长类)species from the 1996 Red List. They found that 17 species designed as being at relatively low risk by the Red List should now be reassigned as high priority.Contrary to the expectations of many, the researchers also found that two high-profile species, the gorilla and the pygmy chimpanzee, should be downgraded to a lower level of threat. But Craig Hilton-Taylor, Red List Programme Officer based in Cambridge, England, says that the IUCN has already introduced a species classification system for threats such as human density. The system runs in parallel to the main Red List classification.Besides, part of the Red List’s value is that you can make comparisons with past assessments, he says, and tweaking the criteria would make this impossible. “We’ve been asked by everyone, please don’t change the system again,” says Hilton-Taylor.Harcourt maintains that making explicit threats part of the criteria is not only more accurate, it may also help highlight future problems. Matt Walpole, a conservation researcher at the University of Kent at Canterbury, England, agrees: “Where population data is lacking, it might be a useful way of flagging up potentially threatened species. ”76. The Red list used to determine the risk of extinction a species may run by assessing all of the following, EXCEPT____________.A. human population dataB. the species’ population sizeC. the species’ rate of declineD. the geographic range of the species77. In order to indicate the level of threat caused by people to rare species, _____ has/have been introduced.A. a specific classification systemB. a more accurate assessment systemC. the Red List standardsD. the Red List classification78. The level of risk indicated by the Red List to each endangered species should be______.A. downgradedB. upgradedC. reassessedD. kept as it is79. The proper title for this passage should be______.A. The experiences children have during their first years of life can significantly enhance the development of their creativity.81.All children need to be truly creative is the freedom to commit themselves completely to the effort and make whatever activity they are doing their own. What's important in any creative act is the process of self-expression. Creative experiences can help children express and cope with their feelings. A child's creative activity can help teachers to learn more about what the child may be thinking or feeling. Creativity also fosters mental growth in children by providing opportunities for trying out new ideas, and new ways of thinking and problem-solving. Creative activities help acknowledge and celebrate children's uniqueness and diversity as well as offer excellent opportunities to personalize our teaching and focus on each child.82. Children need plenty of opportunities for creative play and creative thinking. Start by providing activities that are based on the children's interests and ideas. This means learning how to listen intently to what children are saying. It is very helpful to tape record and transcribe children's conversations as well as take notes and review them with your co-teachers. Be sure to offer children a wide range of creative materials and experiences. Being creative is more than drawing or painting. There's also photography, music, field trips, working with wire, clay, paper, wood, water or shadows. The possibilities are endless. It's important to provide children lots of time to explore materials and pursue their ideas. This includes time to think about how to plan, design, construct, experiment and revise project ideas. Don't forget to build in time to talk these ideas over with other people - both teachers and children.83.Look for ways to provide multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and other community experiences for children. Activities such as field trips, celebrating holidays and activities with other ethnic groups, and encouraging children to bring visitors to school enhances the creative process. The more varied experiences children have in their lives, the wider the range of creative expression. The more personal experiences children have with people and situations outside of their own environment, the more material they can draw on to incorporate in their play. Our challenge is to try not to be intimidated by the variety and diversity of artistic expression in our classroom.84. Encouraging children to make their own choices is important. Children should be permitted frequent opportunities - and lots of time - to experience and explore expressive materials. Put your emphasis on the process of creativity and not on the finished product. What children learn and discover about themselves is vital to their development. Show your support for the creative process by appreciating and offering support for children's efforts. Independence and control are important components in the creative process. This is especially true when working with children with disabilities.第Ⅱ卷(45分)I. From 1959 until 1998 the Oscars were, with a few exceptions, presented on a Monday night. Only since 1999 has the Awards ceremony taken place on a Sunday ( 46 in March). The answer is that women enjoy a joke more once they get it. If you tell a woman a joke and get a blank look, don’t 41 despair. She’s just taking her time to understand it. But if the punchline(妙语)does eventually make her laugh it will be 42 the wait.Scientists have found that while women are slower than men at getting jokes, they enjoy them more when they truly understand. Research shows that women use their brain more than men to process witty 43 and have less expectation that they will be funny. When a joke does hit the right 44 , however, women derive more pleasure from it. Scientists asked ten men and ten women to look at dozens of black and white cartoons and rate them on a “funniness scale”. During the process they underwent sophisticated scans that mapped which parts of their brain were lighting up and timed how long it took them to 45 to a joke. The women tended to use 46 parts of their brain. Professor Allan Reiss said: “We found greater activity in the parts of their brain in women, showing women are processing stimuli that 47 language areas of the brain.”The 48 of a “feelgood” brain region also revealed that men and women have different attitudes to humour. Experts said: “Women appeared to have less expectation of a reward. So they were more pleased about it.” The funnier the cartoon, the more the women’s parts of their brain lit up. This was not the case for men. The women took 49 longer than the men to react to jokes that were funny — but were quicker to spot the “truth”.III. But few people know much about King’s childho od, Martin Luther as he was called was born in 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the home of his maternal grandfather. Martin Luther’s grandfather, the Reverend A.D. Williams, purchased their home on Auburn Avenue in 1909, 28 years before Martin Luther was born. The Reverend A.D. Williams, an eloquent speaker, played an important role in the community because so many people’s lives centered around the church. He allowed his church and his home to be used as a meeting place for a number of organizations dedicated to the education and social advancement of blacks. Martin Luther grew up in this atmosphere, with his home being used as community gathering place, and was no doubt influenced by it.Martin Luther’s childhood was not especially memorable. His father was a minister and his mother was a musician. He was the second of three children, and he attended all-black schools in a black neighbourhood. The neighbourhood was not poor, however, Auburn Avenue was the main artery through a prosperous neighbourhood that he had come to symbolize achievement for Atlanta’s black people. It was area of banks, insurance companies, builders, jewelers, tailors, doctors, lawyers and other black-owned or black-operated businesses and services. Even in the face of Atlanta’s segregat ion (种族隔离), district thrived. Dr. King never forgot the community spirit he had known as a child, nor did he forget the racial prejudice(歧视)that was a seemingly insurmountable barrier that kept black Atlantans from mingling with whites.68. This passage mainly gives an account of ______.A. the prejudice that existed in AtlantaB. Martin Luther’s grandfatherC. Martin Luther King’s childhoodD. the neighbourhood where King grew up69. According to the author, King was influenced by ______.A. community spiritB. black lawyerC. his motherD. his grandfather’s speeches70. The word “mingling” in paragraph 2 is the closest in meaning to ______.A. interferingB. consumingC. associatingD. meeting71. This passage tells us that Martin Luther King, Jr. ______.A. had a difficult childhoodB. was a good musician when he was a boyC. loved to listen to his grandfather speakD. grew up in a relatively rich area of Atlanta(C)A weather map is an important tool for geographers. A succession of three or four maps presents a continuous picture of weather changes. Weather forecasters are able to determine the speed of air masses and fronts(冷暖空气团接触的锋)to determine whether an individual pressure area is deepening or becoming shallow and whether a front is increasing or decreasing in intensity. They are also able to determine whether an air mass is retaining its original characteristics or taking on those of the surface over which it is moving. Thus, a most significant function of the map is to reveal a synoptic picture of conditions in the atmosphere at a given time. All students of geography should be able to interpret a weather map accurately. Weather maps contain an enormous amount of information about weather conditions existing at the time ofobservation over a large geographical area. They reveal in a few minutes what otherwise would take hours to describe. The United States Weather Bureau issues information about approaching storms, floods, frosts, drought s, and all climatic conditions in general. Twice a month it issues a 30-day “outlook” which is a rough guide to weather conditions likely to occur over broad areas of the United States. These 30-day outlooks are based upon an analysis of the upper air levels which often set the stage for the development of air masses, fronts, and storms.Considerable effort is being exerted today to achieve more accurate weather predictions. With the use of electronic instruments and earth satellites, enormous gains have taken place recently in identifying and tracking storms over regions which have but few meteorological stations (气象站). Extensive experiments are also in progress for weather modification(改变)studies. But the limitations of modification have prevented meteorological results except in the seeding of super-cooled, upslope mountainous winds which have produced additional orographic (山岳形态的) precipitation on the windward side of mountain ranges. Nevertheless, they have provided a clearer understanding of the fundamentals of weather elements.72. By reading weather maps, students majoring in geography can .A. design a project of weather modificationB. interpret the weather condition before the time of observationC. obtain data on atmospheric conditions over a wide areaD. survey ever-changing fronts in local meteorological stations73. A thirty-day forecast is determined by examining .A. daily weather mapsB. upper air levelsC. satellite reportsD. changing fronts74. The observation of weather conditions by satellites is advantageous because ______.A. electronic instruments are usedB. it enables man to alter the weatherC. it makes weather prediction more time-consumingD. information not obtained readily otherwise can be gained75. At the present time, experiments are being conducted in .A. controlling and influencing weatherB. determining density of pressure groupsC. 30-day “outlooks”D. predicting stormsSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.A. The power and habit of thinkingB. The value of previous educationC. The correctness in using mother tongueD. The development of an educated manE. The possession of gratitudeF. Refined and natural manners76.The first characteristic of an educated man is the precision of the use of the native language. When one hears English well spoken, with pure diction, correct pronunciation, and an almost unconscious choice of the right word, he recognizes it at once. How much easier he finds it to imitate English of the other sort.77.When manners are artificial and forced, no matter what their form, they are bad manners. When, however, they are the natural expression of fixed habits of thought and action, and when they reveal a refined and cultivated nature, they are good manners. There are certain things that gentlemen do not do, and they do not do them simply because they are bad manners.78.Human beings for the most part live wholly on the surface or far beyond the present moment and that part of the future that is quickly to follow it. They do not read those works of prose and poetry which have become classic because they reveal power and habit of reflection and induce that power and habit in others. When one reflects long enough to ask the question how? He is on the way to knowing something about science.79.An educated man continues to grow and develop from birth to his dying day. His interests expand, his contacts multiply, his knowledge increases, and his reflection becomes deeper and wider. It would appear to be true that not many human beings, even those who have had a school and college education, continue to grow after they are twenty-four or twenty-five years of age. By that time it is usual to settle down to life on a level of more or less contented intellectual interest and activity. The whole present-day movement for adult education is a systematic and definite attempt to keep human beings growing long after they have left school and college, and therefore, to help educate them.80.The more visionary dreamer, however charming or however wise, lacks something that an education requires. The power to do may be exercised in any one of a thousand ways, but when it clearly shows itself, that is evidence that the period of discipline of study and of companionship with parents and teachers has not been in vain.SectionDDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.Exceptional children are different in some significant ways from others of the same age. For these children to develop to their full adult potential, their education must be adapted to those differences.Although we focus on the needs of exceptional children, we find ourselves describing their environment as well. While the leading actor on the stage captures our attention, we are aware of the importance of the supporting players and the scenery of the play itself. Both the family and the society in which exceptional children live are often the key to their growth and development. And it is in the public schools that we find the full expression of society’s understanding —the knowledge, hopes, and fears that are passed on to the next generation.Education in any society is a mirror of that society. In that mirror we can see the strengths, the weaknesses, the hopes, the prejudices, and the central values of the culture itself. The greatinterest in exceptional children shown in public education over the past three decades indicates the strong feeling in our society that all citizens, whatever their special conditions, deserve the opportunity to fully develop their capabilities.“All men are created equal,” we heard it many times, but it still has important meaning for education in a democratic society. Although the phrase was us ed by this country’s founders to indicate equality before the law, it has also been interpreted to mean equality of opportunity. That concept implies educational opportunity for all children — the right of each child to receive help in learning to the limits of his or her capability, whether that capability is small or great. Recent court decisions have confirmed the right of all children — disabled or not — to an appropriate education, and have ordered that public schools take the necessary steps to provide that education. In response, schools are modifying their programs, adapting instruction to children who are exceptional, to those who cannot profit substantially from regular programs.(Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TWELVE WORDS.)81. This passage is concerned primarily with the necessity of adapting ________________.82. What affects the growth of exceptional children according to the author?83. People have shown great interest in the education of exceptional children over the last threedecades because they believe that ________________________________________.84. According to the passage, what does “All men are created equal” mean to the country’sfounders?第II卷(共 45 分)I. To many property developers and local government officials, housing price in China is still low compared with many developed countries. However, the average housing price in the United States is only 8,000 yuan per square meter, while in China, it is even higher than in the United States. This shows that there are some bubbles(泡沫) in Chinese real estate market, the International Finance News reported.Although the average price of residential houses in the United States, after converted to Renminbi, is about 8,000 yuan per square meter, the houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses. If US property developers sell their houses according to the building area, then the housing price will be even lower than 8,000 yuan per square meter. In most big Chinese cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, houses are sold at a price even higher than those in the US.The high housing sales price in large cities in China proves that Chinese real estate market does have some bubbles. Moreover, Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities. Furthermore, it should be noted that American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese people. How can the Chinese afford to buy a house which is even more expensive than that sold in US?At the beginning of 2007, Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public. Now in order to reduce the high housing prices, the government can regulate the real estate market by raising tax on property industry and controlling the release of loans and lands to property developers. At the same time, the government should allow people to build more houses through various fund-raising channels, such as funds collected from buyers or raised by working units. By applying these multiple means, it is expected that the high housing prices can be lowered.72.According to the passage, what is the average housing price per square meter in China?A.8000 yuan B.10000 yuan C.7000 yuan D.It’s not mentioned here 73.Which of the following does NOT support the idea that the average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States?A.Chinese houses can not be compared with houses in US in terms of building quality, environment and supporting facilities.B.American people’s average income is several dozen times higher than that of Chinese people.C.The houses in US are not sold in terms of building area, as most Chinese property developers do when they sell their houses.D.There are more people who need houses in China.74.What is the main idea of this passage?A.The housing price in China is so high that the government should do something useful to prevent it.B.There are some bubbles in Chinese real estate market.C.The average housing price in China is even higher than in the United States.D.Chinese government issued a set of policies that aimed to benefit the public.75.How many measures are mentioned in the last paragraph in order to reduce the high housing prices?A.Four B.Three C.Five D.TwoDSome futurologists have assumed that the vast increase of women in the workforce may portend(预示)a rejection of marriage. Many women, according to this hypothesis, would rather work than marry. The opposite of this concern is that the prospects of becoming a multi-paycheck household could encourage marriage. In the past, only the earnings and financial prospects of the man counted in the marriage decision. Now, however, the earning ability of a woman can make her more attractive as a marriage partner. Data show that economic downturns tend to put off marriage because the parties cannot afford to establish a family or are concerned about rainy days ahead. As the economy comes to life, the number of marriages also rises. The increase in divorce rates follows to the increase in women working outside the home. Yet, it may be wrong to jump to any simple cause-and-effect conclusions. The impact of a wife’s work on divorce is no less cloudy than its impact on marriage decisions. The realization that she can be a good provider may increase the chances that a working wife will choose divorce over an unsatisfactory marriage. But the reverse is equally plausible(似是而非的). Tensions grounded in financial problems often play a key role in ending a marriage. By raising a family’s standard of living, a working wife may strengthen her family’s financial and emotional stability.Psychological factors also should be considered. For example, a wife blocked from a career outside the home may feel caged in the house. She may view her only choice as seeking a divorce. On the other hand, if she can find fulfillment through work outside the home, work and marriage can go together to create a stronger and more stable union. Also, a major part of women’s inequality in marriage has been due to the fact that, in most cases, men have remained the main breadwinners. A working wife may rob a husband of being the master of the house. Depending upon how the couple reacts to these new conditions, it could create a stronger equal partnership or it could create new insecurities.76.It is said in the passage that when the economy slides_____.A.men would choose working women as their marriage partnersB.more women would get married to seek financial securityC.even working women would worry about their marriagesD.more people would prefer to remain single for the time being77.If women find fulfillment through work outside the home,_____.A.they are more likely to dominate their marriage partnersB.their husbands are expected to do more houseworkC.their marriage ties can be strengthenedD.they tend to put their career before marriage78.One reason why women with no career may seek a divorce is that_____.A.they feel that they have been robbed of their freedomB.they are afraid of being bossed around by their husbandsC.they feel that their partners fail to live up to their expectationsD.they tend to suspect their husbands? loyalty to their marriage79.Which of the following statements can best summarize the authors view in the passage?A.The stability of marriage and the divorce rate may reflect the economic situation of the country.B.Even when economically independent, most women have to struggle for real equality in marriage.C.In order to secure their marriage women should work outside the home and remain independent.D.The impact of the growing female workforce on marriage varies from case to case. If you change your program based on an investor’s guidelines, you may end up with a project or program that is mere shell(框架)of the original plan. The goal of grant writing is not simply to bring more money in for your agency; the goal is to fund programs that will meet the needs of your investor.81.Most funding agencies publish grant guidelines or requirements. Make sure you understand them and follow them exactly. Note the deadline and whether the proposal must be received by the deadline. Don’t have your proposal thrown out because you didn’t follow the guidelines properly. Exceptions are rarely made, regardless of the circumstances. Some investors have special requirements; follow them!82.Your “needs statement”drives your entire grant proposal. The proposed program should revolve around the problems faced by your clients. The purpose of the grant is to meet the specific needs you have identified. If you have not adequately described the reason you need the program, including the research data when possible, the investor will see no reason to invest in your project. 83.Every proposal will require a section that describes the broad goals and measurable objectives of your project. You should detail the activities of your project Your budget and budget narrative must closely match the described activities. Your evaluation should carefully measure whether the stated project objectives are being met on a timely basis. Foundation and corporate investors generally expect this section to be no longer than 5 to 10 pages. Federal grants may allow up to 50 pages or more for a thorough discussion of your project. Again, follow the guidelines of the investor.84.If you are fortunate enough to have your proposal funded, send a thank-you note for the grant. Next, keep the funding agency informed about your activities, progress and accomplishments. Invite them to come to see your program in operation. Send reports that tell how you’ve used the funds. In short, make your investor your partner.第Ⅱ卷(共45分)Ⅰ.Translation(20分)Directions: Translate the following sentences into English.
