AWeekends are normally a time for shopping and last Saturday was no exception. My son Henry and I were shopping in a neighborhood market. Henry was busy weighing each new bag of vegetables I selected. I gave him a bag of potatoes and he walked over to the scale and waited in line. Suddenly, a man rushed over from behind, and stepped before him, hitting him out of the way. Henry looked shocked and scared. Seeing this I left my shopping cart and walked over to Henry, saying loudly, “Are you OK, honey? I saw what that man did to you. That was very, very wrong.”When the man finished weighing his bag, his sudden turning around made all his onions fall to the ground. The three of us stood there, frozen for a moment. And then I bent down on my hands and knees and started collecting onions. After I handed the onions to the man, he accepted them and put them into his bag. After Henry and I picked up all the onions, the man walked away without saying anything. We didn't discuss the event until we got back in the car.On the way back home, Henry said through tears, “Mommy, I've a frustrating day. That man cut right in front of me. And we had to help him pick up his onions! Why did we do that? That didn't make any sense!”I took a deep breath and said, “Henry, that man seemed to have a very bad mood today. We should forgive him. I was also angry with the man for treating you rudely. I really wanted to kick him. But doing that doesn't make any sense. If we hadn't helped him, we might have felt good for a moment, but then I bet we would have felt really sorry for a long time. You and I have a lot of love to share. Maybe that man doesn't have much. People who behave badly still need love.”A cheerful smile appeared on Henry's face. It was a smile of promise kept. It was the best smile I had ever seen. It was a good moment. It may have been my best mommy moment ever.
Module 5 Newspapers and MagazinesThe style collectorIt's ten o'clock on Sunday morning and Nathan Bradshaw is sitting in front of a clothes stall (摊位) in Camden Market in London. But he isn't buying anything —he's drawing pictures in a notebook. “I'm watching the people. I want to see what they are wearing and what they are buying.” Nathan collects styles. He es to Camden every Sunday and spends hours drawing the clothes he sees there. “Camden is a great place because a lot of the people who e here wear really unusual things: they mix different styles and colors, and the results are often fantastic”.When did Nathan first get interested in fashion (时尚)? “When I was fifteen, I had a Saturday job in the clothes department of a big store and I helped at a fashion show for the customers. After that I got bored with selling clothes and I decided that I wanted to bee a fashion designer.” Does he want to be another Calvin Klein or Stella McCartney? He laughs. “Of cours e I'd like to be rich and famous, but there are only a few designers who are on TV and in magazines. There are a lot more who nobody knows: they work long hours and don't earn much money. I think the job is exciting and creative, but it's certainly not glamorous (富有魅力的).”Does Nathan plan to do a course in clothes design? “Oh yes, when I finish school. I'm reading about the fashion industry on the Internet at the moment, and all the articles say you need to go to fashion school and learn to cut fabric (布料) and make clothes if you want to be successful. It's not enough to be a good artist.”From: medium.[语篇导读]Nathan Bradshaw每周日都会出现在伦敦肯顿市集上,他不是去买东西,而是观察熙熙攘攘的人群的穿着式样……[词海拾贝]1.fantastic美妙的,极好的2.a fashion show 时尚秀3.get bored with 对…… 加到……4.take_off 起飞5.in_total 总共;合计6.congratulate_sb._on_sth. 就……向某人祝贺7.in_the_history_of 在……的历史上8.in_space 在太空9.concentrate_on 全神贯注于“集中精力于”短语荟萃①concentrate on 全神贯注于②focus one's attention on 集中注意力在③be lost in 迷失在……中④be buried in 专心于由in space所想到的①in heaven 在天堂②in the sky 在天空③in the air 在空中④in the universe 在宇宙⑤in the world 在世界上Ⅲ. 1.The Russian word kosmonavt es from the Greek words kosmos, meaning_universe and nautes.
