The accident happened during a family holiday in the French Alps. Although he was wearing a helmet, which broke apart on impact, the F1 celebrity was moving at speeds of up to 62 mph and skiing outside the off-piste safety demarcations (滑雪场地外的安全区). Doctors reported that he would have died on impact if he hadn’t bee n wearing a helmet. He has been in a coma (昏迷) since arriving at a nearby hospital where he was airlifted to from the site of the accident.Michael Schumacher grew up in frugal (简朴的) conditions and started what would become his remarkable professional career when his working class father — a bricklayer — built him a go-kart from where he started participating in competitions. He started his adult career racing for Formula Ford in 1988 and later raced for Formula One Ford, Ferrari, and Mercedes AMG. He holds numerous F1 world records including most race victories, fastest laps, and most races won in a single season. According to the Formula One website, he is “statistically the greatest driver the sport has ever seen”. Also notable are his contributions to charity, during the peak of his career he has given away more than 50 million Euros to a variety of charity organizations, most to help children around the world.Millions of Europeans and other fans around the world are holding their breath and waiting for information about his hopeful recovery. Could it work? Why do songs stick in our heads? What does your school smell like? Is it noisy or peaceful? It might not seem important, but a growing body of research suggests that smells and sounds can have an impact on learning, performance and creativity. Indeed, some head teachers have recently taken to broadcasting noises and pumping smells into their schools to see whether it can boost grades. Is there anything in it? And if so, what are the implications for the way we work and study? There is certainly some well-established research to suggest that some noises can have a harmful effect on learning. Numerous studies over the past 15 years have found that children attending schools under the flight paths of large airports fall behind in their exam results. Bridget Shield, a professor of acoustics (声学) at London South Bank University, and Julie Dockrell, from the Institute of Education, have been conducting studies on the effects of all sorts of noises, such as traffic and sirens (汽笛), as well as noise generated by the children themselves. When they recreated those particular sounds in anexperimental setting while children completed various learning tasks, they found a significant negative effect on exam scores. “Everything points to a bad impact of the noise on children’s performance, in numeracy, in literacy, and in spelling,” says S hield. The noise seemed to have an especially harmful effect on children with special needs.Whether background sounds are beneficial or not seems to depend on what kind of noise it is — and the volume. In a series of studies published last year, Ravi Mehta from the College of Business at Illinois and his colleagues tested people’s creativity while exposed to a soundtrack made up of background noises — such as coffee-shop chatter and construction-site drilling —at different volumes. They found that people were more creative when the background noises were played at a medium level than when volume was low. Loud background noise, however, damaged their creativity. Many teachers all over the world already play music to students in class. Many are inspired by the belief that hearing music can boost IQ in later tasks, the so-called Mozart effect. While the evidence actually suggests it’s hard to say classical music boosts brainpower, researchers do think pleasant sounds before a task can sometimes lift your mood and help you perform well, says Perham, who has done his own studies on the phenomenon. The key appears to be that you enjoy what you’re hearing. “If you like the music or you like the sound — even listening to a Stephen King novel — then you do better. It doesn’t matter about the music,” he says. So, it seems that schools that choose to prevent disturbing noises and create positive soundscapes could enhance the learning of their students, so long as they make careful choices. Yet this isn’t the only sense being used to affec t learning. Special educational needs students at Sydenham high school in London are being encouraged to revise different subjects in the presence of different smells — grapefruit scents for maths, lavender for French and spearmint for history.【小题1】The four questions in the first paragraph are meant to ________.A. create some sense of humour to please the readersB. provide the most frequently asked questions in schools nowadaysC. hold the readers’ attention and arouse their curiosity to go o n readingD. declare the purpose of the article: to try to offer key to those questions【小题2】What does the conclusion of the studies of noise conducted by Bridget Shield and Julie Dockrell suggest?A. All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. 1 Yet Bollywood is the largest producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards, Bollywood's Oscars, turn 50 years old.The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a tea-spoon of comedy, a dash of international sight-seeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.4 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. AA new report has concluded that advertising managers are becoming increasingly interested in children.Studies show that children influence about 50 percent of things that families buy,so they're an attractive target for advertisers.John Taylor, the author of the report, says:“Advertisers can reach their target in many ways. They can,for example, show an ad many times during school holidays, they can make the TV advertisements a little louder than the programmes to attract attention,or they can sponsor programmes and show their advertisements just before the programme begins.”Most advertisements aimed at children are short, imaginative and often in the form of animated cartoons(动画片).“Children love the ads and watch them in the same way as any entertainment programme,”Taylor says. There're concerns about advertising aimed at young people. The concerns are shared by Sarah Durham,a writer and journalist specialising in media analysis. The most worrying thing is that childrendon't think carefully when they see television advertisements. They're less critical than adults and don't usually realise the advertisement has a persuasive message,to encourage them or their parents to spend as much money as possible on the product or service,”she says. There're also concerns over the vast sums of money that junk food producers spend on advertising to persuade children to buy their food products. Many advertisements, argues Durham, sell food that is a lot higher in fat, salt and sugar than healthier alternatives.“Many companies target children with offers of free toys, models of cartoon characters and gimmicky (耍花招的) packaging.”Government approaches to controlling advertising to children vary.In Sweden, one of the strictest countries where advertising is concerned,TV advertising to children under the age of 12 is banned.Greece bans television advertisements for children's toys between 7 am and 10 pm.Denmark and the Netherlands also have legal controls whereas France,Britain and Germany prefer self-regulation(自动调节).Some countries are not as certain as the Swedes that advertising to children is harmful. The French argue that children need to see many advertisements so that they can develop their ability to think as they grow up.The belief is that advertising will help children to be more aware of its persuasive power.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。

Lady.Scientists say she probably died of lung disease whenshe was in her 40s — about 2,000 years ago — in Egypt. They even have a model of her skull.Based on that,an artist was sure how she may have looked when she was alive. And yet,the mummy’s coffin has never been opened.Instead, scientists used a machine called a CT scanner to look inside.CT scanners were developed to help doctors examine patients. But the machines turned out to be perfect for studying mummies, too.“A hundred years ago, scientists would usually open mummies’coffins. This did a great deal of harm to those mummies,” says AMNH president Ellen V.Futter.“We just don’t do that anymore. We can do so much better.By using CT scanners, scientists can know about an ancient person’s diet from some of a mummy’s hair.Pieces of bone can show who was related to whom.”Some mummies in Peru were buried with a skull hanging from their neck.Scientists thought these mummies wore the skull of an enemy. But DNA evidence showed that the mummies were buried with the skull of an ancestor. The 19 mummies in the show are from Egypt and Peru. They had completely different reasons for mummifying the dead. The ancient Egyptians believed that mummification allowed an ancestor to live on in the next world. The people who prepared the Gilded Lady thought she would continue to see, hear, and smell. In ancient Peru, people practiced mummification to stay connected with their ancestors. Some families kept mummies in their home.Futter calls the mummies in the show “messengers from another time.” With the help of technology, scientists will continue to uncover mummies’ secrets so we can understand it.5.What did scientists find about the Gilded Lady?A.She was a great artist.B.She died a natural death.C.She lived in ancient Egypt.D.She had an amazingly long life.6.What do Futter’s words suggest?A.Pieces of bone show a person’s diet.B.CT scanners do great harm to mummies.C.Mummies usually wore the skull of an enemy.D.Technology plays an In the popular imagination, the rise of self-driving cars will mean greener cities, safer roads, and happier workers. With technology, speeding, braking, and reaccelerating—which are responsible for much of the gas burned on roads, today and the resulting air pollution—would be a memory. But despite these opportunities, there are certain reasons why driverless vehicles may fail to live up to some of these expectations,or at least take a little while longer to achieve them.First, truly automated technology—at least the kind that requires no human involvement—is rare in every sector of the economy, and there’s little reason to think driving will be any different.Human drivers will still bear the final responsibility for the cars they’re riding in.A related challenge—particularly for driverless cars—is the complexity of the systems involved. For example, some cars today require over 100 million lines of software code(代码) to keep themrunning.More code means more functions, which,to some degree, also means more opportunities for software errors.Driverless cars raise a challenge in this regard and possibly cause more opportunities for errors— errors that can lead to accidents.Yet the greatest challenge facing driverless cars isn’t technological, but psychological.Surveys consistently reveal global skepticism about the technology.Americans, for example, remain more worried than excited by driverless cars.Over half of the American public say they would not ride one given the opportunity. This shows a deep-seated lack of trust in the technology.Similar ideas have been expressed worldwide. What’s more likely is that human drivers will continue applying some control over theircars, regardless of how automated those cars are. Some may quarrel with this idea. But automakers have long been preparing for it.Just ask Nissan,Waymo, and Zoo,all of which are exploring ways for human drivers to retake control of a car should automation fail.In other words, driverless does not—and will not—mean humanless.限时规范练42(选修7Module6)一、【篇章导读】本文是应用文。
