However, I’ll never forget my American History professor Dr Williamson . Each event leaped from the pages of our text and become as real as the daily news report on the radio. My favorite lecture concerned the American Revolution. Dr. Williamson told us the story Paul Revere, a well-known silversmith, working in his shop. The American colonists were angry because of the British control over their lives. Revere felt that war between the British and the colonists was inevitable. Then, Dr. Williamson told us about Revere rowing across the Charles River from Boston on April 18.1775.I can see the professor now as he raised his hand to his forehead as if he were looking across the Charles River to the Old North Church in Boston. Suddenly, Revere caught sight of two lanterns, a signal which meant that the British would attack by sea . He jumped on his horse to warm the villagers of the attack. Professor Williamson reminded us that the first battles of the American Revolution were fought at Concord and at Lexington, Massachusetts, the year before the Declaration of Independence was singed in 1776. Reading ComprehenPassage 1There was a time when, if a lady got into a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer her his seat. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone gets off. You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners. The days are gon e when women could be treated as the weaker sex. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men; not just equality in jobs or education, but in social attitudes. Hold a door open for some women and you’re likely to get an angry lectur e on treating women as inferiors, unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she’ll probably insist on paying hershare of the bill. It’s no wonder, then, that men have given up some of the gestures of politeness and consider ation which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, man’s politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by more consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings.46.What will gentlemen nowadays do when a lady gets on a crowded but or train?A. They will stand up reluctantly.B. They will offer her their seats after a while.C. They will pretend not to see her.D. They will get off the bus.47.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.Men have become less and less the weaker sex.B. The women are thought of as the weaker sex.C. The women could not open doors for themselves.D. Men’s attitudes towards women are reasonable.48.Why are some women likely to get angry as a man holds the door open for them?A.Because they think they are looked down upon.B. Because they are treated too politely.C. Because the man should not hold the door open.D. Because men often offend women in this manner.49.What is replacing men’s ge stures of politeness?A.More graceful politeness towards women.B. More consideration for women’s needs and feelings.C. More impolite gestures of social behavior to women.D. More equal treatment to women in every respect.50.What can we learn from this passage?A.Men ought to make gestures of politeness towards women.B. Women ought to make gestures of politeness towards men.C. Women have achieved equality with men.D. Men are beginning to treat women as equal human beings.Passage 2With the growth of the information Superhighway, a logical development in the job searching process is the electronic resume. Electronic resumes can be e-mailed to employers, posted on electronic resume databases, and cut-and-pasted into any place where you are asked for an online resume. Human resources directors and business owners know that they can locate qualified job seekers by going to sites that post electronic resumes. Employment sites can help you compose your resu me and post it online. Services like “Online Resumes” (/) will easily change your resume to HTML and add it to their database, where it can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Employers can select criteria(标准), and a search tool will select potential candidates from thousands of resumes. Pam Dixon has written a useful resource book named Job Searching Online for Dummies. In it you can learn what to include and what not to include in your resume. Another suggestion is to look at what other people are doing online. Take advantage of this high-tech way to market yourself on the Internet. Beyond help for your resume, online career resources for job seekers include how to have a successful interview and how to find the right job for you. Using the Internet can give you a competitive edge that will set you apart from other job seekers and help you reach your personal career goal.51.In order to find qualified job seekers, personnel directors and business owners often ___________.A.create a web siteB. select a search toolC. visit websites that post electronic resumesD. read Pam Dixon’s book52.What can you get from the employment sites?A. Talking during a performance irritates(激怒) people. If you are expecting an emergency call, sit near the exit doors and set your phone to vibrate(振动). When your mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the others enjoy the performance. Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places—especially enclosed spaces. Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? Worse yet, how would you feel if a mobile phone rang suddenly during a funeral! It happens more often than you think. Avoid these embarrassing situations by making sure your mobile phone is switched off. When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on th e table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you. Mobile phones have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that other s won’t hear the details of your conversation. If you are calling ina noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.56.What should you do when you need to answer a phone call during a performance?A.Call back after the performance.B. This is the research result of Professor Faulkner, who says that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise and as a result, we are ageing unnecessarily soon. Professor Faulkner wanted to find out why healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and to reason at s relatively early age, and how the process of ageing could be slowed down. He set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and occupations. Computer technology enabled him to obtain precise measurements of the volume of the front and side sections of the brain, which relate to intelligence and emotion, and determine the human character. Contraction of front and side parts—as cells die off—was observed in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty and seventy-year-olds. Faulkner concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to slow the contraction—using the head. The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in peoplein the country than in the towns. Those least at risk, says Faulkner, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White-collar workers doing routine work are, however, as likely to have shrinking brains as the farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants. Faulkner’s findings show that thinking can prevent the brain from shrinking. Blood must circulate properly in the head to supply the fresh oxygen the brain cells need. “The best way to maintain good blood circulation is through using the brain,” he says. “Think hard and engage in conversation. Don’t rely on pocket calculators”.61.Professor Faulkner wanted to find out __________.A.how people’s brains shrinkB. the way of making people live longerC. the size of certain people’s brainsD. why certain people aged sooner than others62. Each of the three passages is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C, and D. Y ou should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:In the traditional marriage, the man worked at a job to earn money for the fa mily. Most men worked in an office, a factory or some other place away from the home. Sine the man earned the money, he paid the bills. The money was used for food, clothes, a house and other family needs. The man made most ofthe decisions. He was the boss.In the traditional marriage, the woman seldom worked away from the house. She stayed at home to care for the children and her husband. She cooked the meals, cleaned the house, washed the clothes and did other household work. Her job at home was very important. In recent years, many couples continue to have traditional relationship of this kind. The man has a job and earns the money for the family. The woman stays at home and cares for the children and the house. Many Americans are happy with this kind of marriage. But some other Americans have a different impression of marriage and family responsibilities. There are two important differences in male and female roles now. One is that both men and women have many more choices. They may choose to marry or to stay single. They may choose to work or stay at home. Both men and women may choose roles that are comfortable for them.A second difference in male an female roles is that within marriage many decisions and responsibilities are shared. The husband and wife may choose to have children, or they may not. If they have children, the man may take care of them some of the time, all of the time, or not at all. The woman may want to stay at home and take care of the children. Or she may want to go to work. Men and women now decide these things together in a marriage. Many married people now share these decisions and the responsibilities of their families.46. The man was the boss in the traditional marriage.B.The woman’s job at home was very important in the past.C.Many Americans still have a traditional marriage.D.Everyone tries to get married.Questions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage:Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be game of some kind, football, hockey, golf, tennis, or it may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer clod and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules. As there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind that it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should not be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.51. Mountaineering is a sport which involves______A. hardshipB. coldC. physical riskD. all of the above52. The main difference between a sport and a game lies in_____A. uniformB. activityC. rulesD. skills53. Mountaineering is also a team sport because_____A.. it involves rulesB. it involves matches between teamsC、it requires mental and physical qualitiesD、mountaineers depend on each other while climbing54. Which of the following is true?A.Mountaineers compete against each otherB.Mountaineers compete against other teams.C.Mountaineers compete against natureD.Mountaineers compete against international standard.55. What is the best title for the passage?A.MountaineeringB.Mountain ClimbersC.Mountaineering Is Different from Golf and FootballD.Mountaineering Is More Dangerous than Other SportsQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:Most cities and states in the U.S. collect a sales tax on almost everything you buy. Y ou must ask when you move into a new community how the local sales tax is , and what items are and not taxable. Both taxable items and the amount of tax vary considerably, from one or two percent in some places up to eight or ten in others. The New Y ork City sales tax, for example, is currently 8﹪, so if you buy a pair of﹩40 shoes you will actually have to pay﹩43.20. This makes paying and getting correct change much more difficult (not to mention making everything more expensive). We say in America that only two things in life are unavoidable: one is death and the other is taxes. Another thing that makes money exchanges more complicated is tipping. The Chinese people have happily put an end to tipping, but Westerners are still plagued this indignity. Waiters and waitresses, cab drivers, hotel bellboys, barbers and hairdressers and sorts of other people must be tipped. Their employers give them low wages because it is expected that you, the customer, will make up the difference. If you don’t, the service person can’t earn a living. Tipping also varies fromplace to place, generally in the area of 15﹪of your bill (before taxes), but again you should ask local residents whom to tip and how much. There is another kind of tipping as well. Y ou are generally expected to give something (either cash or a bottle of whisky) to he mailman and to your building “supper”at Christmas time. Y ou should discuss this also with neighbors and colleagues.56. This passage is about________.A. shopping and tippingB. sales and taxesC. sales taxes and tippingD. sales taxes and people57. According to the passage, if you buy a pair of﹩50 shoes in the New Y orkcity you pay an extra ____as sales tax.A.﹩4.5B.﹩4C.﹩5D.﹩5.5ually, cab drives____A.get high wage from the employerB. get great benefits from the employerB.get low wages from the employer D. get high bonus from the employer59. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.The Chinese people have to give tips in their own countryB.The westerners don’t have to give high in their own country.C.Barbers, hotel bellboys and all sorts of other people can a living if they are not tipped.D.Tipping varies from place to, generally in the area of 20﹪of your bill.60. Usually, taxable items and the amount of tax____A.have no difference from place to place in the U.S.B.are over 15﹪in the U.S.C.have been put an end to in the U.S.D.vary from place to place in the U.S.Section B short Answer Questions (15 points, 3 for each)Directions: Answer each of the questions in less than 10 words.Questions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:In a classroom in any country, the teachers more than art or history or language. He or she teaches something behind the culture of the country. In a country such as the Untied States, people with different history, culture and language join together and they pay much attention to personal ideas. Teachers try to make each student special. Student do not have to remember a lot of information, instead, they work and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age students learn to have their own ideas. Their education encourages personal thought. The importance is placed on how to arrive at an answer and not just to get the correct answer. In most Asian countries people have the same language, history and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the education there pays more attention to group goals. Children in China and Japan often work together and help each other on homework. In the classroom, the ways of teaching are often very traditional. The teacher says, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules or information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.In many ways these difference come from different educational ideas. In Western countries teachers are taught to help students to learn. They make it easier for the students to learn by themselves. In some Asian countries, however, teachers often feel that there is to pass knowledge to students.61. Do students in the United States have to remember a lot of information?62. There is often discussion in the classroom in America, isn’t there?63. What dose the education in the United States encourage?64. Which does education in some Asian countries pay more attention to, group goals or personalideas?65. What do the teachers in Asian countries think about their job?Ⅳ. A scientific study in recent years has shown that it is a close relative of sadness and attention disorder; that procrastinators tend to be the result of low self-confidence and are likely to experience anxiety. The research has shown, what is more, that the illness has become quite common. Susan Robert, a behavioral psychologist who has written a book called Living With Procrastination., says that about a quarter of the adult population of the United States and Canada is reported to have serious problems with procrastination. “when we say ‘serious’we mean people for whom procrastination causes great discomfort and suffering. We ‘ve found that such people are more troubled by daily life than others, that possibility of anxieiy is much higher amongthem than in the rest of the population. In a society driven by achievement, it is little wonder that not being able to work at full steam will bring people sadness. Surely, in the land of opportunity, this anxiety has produced an industry of experts offering solutions. Many books and specialist solutions have appeared. In exchange for $19. 95, Dr. Jerome Murray will send out an audio-cassette called “Protect your future from the thief of procrastination. “ Dr. Murray promises that if you follow his step-by-step rules you will be empowered to “turn self-defeat into self-realization”. “Since the start of the 1990s, procrastination has been taken more and more seriously , “ said Dr. Roberts, who has been treating patients troubled by the condition for more than 20 years. “It is now recognized as a true mental heath problem and is being seen more as a psychological problem and less as a moral issue.41.What is the main topic of this passage?A.Don’t hesitate to give up smoking.B.Don’t regard depression as not important.C.Delay can be a sign of illness.D.Don’t work too hard to stay healthy.正确答案:C42.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?A.Procrastination is a disease of the mind.B.Procrastination is likely to cause a great discomfort and suffering.C.Procrastination is not considered as a psychological problem but moral issue.D.Dr. Jerome Murray provides some ways to get rid of procrastination.正确答案:C43.How does the author look at procrastination?A.It is something like running.B.It is a disease of mind.C.It is not a permitted act.D.It is not full of stress.正确答案:B44.These are the signs of procrastination except______.A.discomfortB.sufferingC.pleasureD.sadness正确答案:C45.What’s the main idea of Dr. Murray’s cassette “Protect your future from the thief of procrastination”?A.Turn defeat to self-realization.B.Turn depression into enthusiasm.C.Procrastination has been taken more and more seriously.D.Turn self-defeat into self-realization.正确答案:DParrots are becoming one of the most popular pets in America for good reasons. The parrot is an extraordinary bird that can be taught to talk, can be easily cared for, and can create a lively atmosphere anywhere. With the help of an energetic parrot owner, a parrot can develop an enormous vocabulary. In addition, a parrot can be trained to say “Pretty boy”or “Polly wants a cracker, “and it also can learn to whistle or sing. No matter what an owner decides to teach a bird, training a parrot takes much patience, but the reward is a stream of chatter. Another reason for the parrot’s popularity is that this pet does not require much care. For example, even a spoiled parrot does not need a house-sitter for the purpose of daily walks and daily feeding. In fact, a parrot owner may leave his or her pet with enough food for five days and have no fear that the parrot will overeat. Still another advantage of owning a parrot is its inexpensive food, including seeds, nuts, corn, and grain—along with an apple, banana, or carrot. Perhaps the most likely reason the parrot is becoming such a well-liked pet is that it is a combination of tameness and wildness. Because the parrot can live in almost any environment, it makes a fine, tame companion for many people. In addition, because it can be easily trained, it is a delightful performer. At the same time, its colorful feathers give it an air of the mystery of the parrot’s native home, the jungle. Thus, the parrot, once a highly valued gift presented to kings and noble families, is now appreciated by a growing number of people.46.A parrot can be trained to do all the following but______.A.talkB.help its ownerC.singD.create a lively atmosphere正确答案:B47.Which of the following is NOT a reason for the easy raising of the parrot?A.It eats very little.B.Its food is inexpensive.C.It does not need a house-sitter.D.It does not require daily walks as dogs do.正确答案:A48.The word “tameness”in the passage means______.A.the quality of being brave or unafraidB.the quality of being kind or warm-heartedC.the quality of being uncontrolled or fierceD.the quality of being gentle or trained正确答案:D49.The word “jungle”probably means______.A.boundless desert with very little plant lifeB.large apartment building with pleasing surroundingsC.wild land overgrown with thick bushes and treesD.snow-covered mountain top in very cold areas正确答案:C50.The writer______.A.likes the parrotB.dislikes the parrotC.doesn’t care about the parrotD.values the parrot highly正确答案:AIn my long life I have seen many changes in our habits and customs and conditions in general. I think that you might be interested if I told you some of them. The world I entered at the age of eighteen when I became a medical student was a world that knew nothing of such advanced things as planes, films, radios or telephones. It was a very cheap world. Prices were stable. When I entered St. Thomas’hospital I rent a set of rooms in Vincent Square for which I paid 18 shillings a week. My landlady provided me with a very good breakfast before I went to the hospital and a dinner when I came back at half past six. I only had to pay for the breakfasts and dinners twelve shillings a week. For four-pence I lunched at St. Thomas’ on bread and butter and a glass of milk. I could be able to live very well, pay my fees, buy my necessary instruments, clothe myself, and have a lot of fun on fourteen pounds a month. And I could always pawn (当掉) my microscope for three pounds. I spent five years at St. Thomas’hospital. I was a bad student, for my heart, as you might have guessed, was not in it. I wanted, I had always wanted to be a writer, and in the evenings, after my dinner, I wrote and read. Before long, I wrote a novel called “Liza of Lambeth” , which I sent to a publisher and was accepted. It came out during my last year at the hospital and it was successful. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets. Youth is a time when there are few tasks to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the children—things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains; he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.56.People can experience happiness if they______.A.always think of the past and regret itB.value the presentC.are no longer youngD.become old and have much experience正确答案:B57.When people were young, they used to______.A.be in charge of many businessesB.have few things to think about and take onC.look after their younger sisters and brothersD.face a lot of difficulties正确答案:B58.The pains of children lie in the fact that______.A.no one helps them make right decisionsB.they are often beaten by their paren.sC.they can not be accepted and praised by othersD.they are not allowed to do what they like to do正确答案:D59.Children are usually happy because______.A.old people lose interest in themB.they are free to do wrongC.they are familiar with everything going on around themD.things are new to them正确答案:D60.Which of the following is NOT needed for a young man to be happy?A.Hard workB.Being free from troubleC.WealthD.Health正确答案:CClozeIt was an early morning in summer. Each of the three passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Questions 46 to 50 are based on the following passage:In the traditional marriage, the man worked at a job to earn money for eht family. Most men worked in an office ,a factor or some other place away from the home .Since the man earned the money ,he paid the bills. The money was used for food, clothes,a house and other family needs. The man made most of th decisions. He was the boss.In the traditional marriage, the woman seldom worked away from the house. She stayed at home to care for the children and her husband. She cooked the meals ,cleaned the house, washed the clothes an did other household work. Her job at home was important. In recent years, many couples continue to have a traditional relationship of this kind .The man has a job and earns the money for the family. The woman stays at home and cares for the children and the house.May Americans are happy with this kind of marriage. But some other Americans have a different impression of marriage and family responsibilities. There are two important differences in male and females roles now .One is that both men and woman have many more choices. They may choose to marry or to stay single. They may choose to work or stay at home .Both men and women may choose roles that are comfortable for them.A second difference in male and female roles is that within marriage many decisions and responsibilities are shared. The husband and wife may choose to have children ,or they may not,If they have children ,the man may take care of them some of the time ,all of the time ,or not at all.The woman may want to stay at home and take care of the children .Or she may want to go to work.Men and women now decide these things together in marriage. Many marrige people now share these decisions and the responsibilities of their families.46. ColdB. Physical riskC. All of the above52.The main difference between a sport and a game lie in ________A.UniformB.ActivityC.RulesD.SkillsA. Mountaineering is also a team sport because________A.it involves rulesB.It involves matches between teamsC.It requires mental and physicalD.Mountaineers depend on each other while climbing55.Which of the following is true?A.Mountaineers compete against each otherB.Mountaineers compete against other teamC.Mountaineers compete against natureD.Mountaineers compete against international standard55.what is the best title for the passage?A.mountaineeringB.Mountain climbersC.Mountaineering is different from golf and footballD.Mountaineering is more dangerous than other sportsQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:Most cities and states in the U.S collect a sales tax on almost everything you buy.You must ask when you move into a new community how the local sales tax is and what items are and are not taxable. Both taxable items and the amount of tax vary considerably, from one or two percent in some places up to eight or ten in others .The New Your City sales tax ,for example,is currently 8 %,so if you buy a pare of $40 shoes you will actually have to pay $43.20.This makes paying and getting correct change much more difficult (not to mention making everything more expensive). We say in America that only two things in life are unavoidable:one is death and the other is taxes.Another thing that makes money exchanges more complicated is tipping .The Chinese people have happily put an end to tipping ,but Westerners are still plagued with this indignity.Waiters and waitresses ,cab drivers, hotel bellboys, barbers an hairdresser and all sorts of other people must bu tipped.Their employers give them low wages because it is expected that you ,the customer, will make up the difference,If you don't,the service person can't earn a living .Tipping also varies from place to place ,generally in the area of 15%of your bill ,but again you should ask local residents whom to tip and how much. There is another kind of tipping as well. You are generally expected to give something(either cash or a bottle of whisky )to the mailman and to your building "super"at Christmas time. You should discuss this also with neighbours and colleagues.56.This passage is about ______A. Shopping and tippingB. Sales and taxesC. Sales taxes and tippingD. Sales taxes and people57.According to the passage ,if you buy a pair of $50 shoes in the New Your city you pay an extra ____ as sales tax.A.$4.5B.$4C.$5D.$5.5ually,cab drivers___________A.Get high wages from the employerB.Get great benefits from the employerC.Get low wages from the employerD.Get high bonus from the employer59.According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?A.The chinese people have t give tips in western countries.A. The westerners don't have to give high tips in their own country.B. Barbers ,hotel bellboys and all sorts of other people can earn a living if they are nottipped.C. Y ou should choose the most appropriateanswer and write the letter in the corresponding space on the Answer Sheet. Questions 16 to 18 are based on the following passage. The United States is a country of immigrants. After the Native Americans, all people have an immigrant past except African slaves and their descendants (后代). The first immigrants were Europeans, and they arrived in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. They arrived from England on a ship named the Mayflower to escape religious persecution (迫害).The first European immigrants formed thirteen colonies (殖民地) under England. The thirteen colonies were not happy with the mother country, England. The colonies were paying taxes but did not have power. They decided to fight and won their independence. The new Americans wrote the Declaration of Independence. It said that all men were created equal, but it did not include Indians, African slaves or women. The colonies celebrated their independence from England on July 4, 1776. They became a new country, and George Washington was the first president. In the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s, many immigrants came to the United States from different countries. Everyone wanted jobs, freedom, education, and better opportunities. From the 1950s to 2003, many new immigrants came because of war, or for economic or political reasons. Many of these people were Asian or Hispanic. The United States Census said that the total population reached 300 million in 2006. Some people think that these new immigrants contribute to the U. The Internet can help you turn that extra stuff into cash. Before the Internet, Americans sold stuff from their garages or yards. Online shopping sites now provide a new place for people around the world.eBay was the first site where individual sellers could sell goods online. Ten years later, eBay now has over 150 million users in more than 30 countries. This trend has spread quickly around the globe. Major companies now see the Asian market as having the most potential. American companies Amazon and Yahoo both recently partnered with large Chinese sites.Selling on an Internet auction (拍卖) is actually quite simple. First, users pay a fee to list their goods. Buyers then bid on the item. When the auction closes, the highest bidder wins. The seller is then responsible for shipping it. After the sale, the buyer and seller can post comments about the sale on each other’s profile.Don’t want an auction to decide the price for you? Choose a site where you can decide instead. Craigslist has community-based sites worldwide where users can list items for sale with a suggested price.Ready to put your used stuff online? First, find a Web site that serves your area. eBay and Yahoo Auctions both have Web sites in many Asian countries. Second, make sure to market your item well. When writing the description, use accurate and specific details. Include a picture; buyers like to see the product before purchasing it.You needn’t decide to buy or sell anything today, but go ahead and start browsing. You might find something you could use. Development of WebsitesQuestions 27 to 30 are based on the following passage.Business is often seen as the “bad guy”in environmental matters because people feel that businesses will do anything to make a profit. Unfortunately, this is too often the case. Many business people, in fact, believe that they can’t make a profit and be kind to the environment at the same time. However, it does not necessarily have to be this way. Using common business strategies, companies have found ways to become environmentally friendly or “green” and increase their profits at the same time. One such strategy that businesses use is known as “product differentiation”. This term means that a company advertised the fact that its products are different from other, similar products. A number of environmentally friendly companies have done this successfully. For example, inmarketing their products, organic (有机的) food companies emphasize the organic aspect. That is, they highlight the fact that no chemicals have been used to grow the food, and so it is better for consumers’ health and for the environment.Another “green”business strategy that has been successful is waste reduction. Many companies have considered waste and pollution as a necessary part of the production process. They have done little to prevent either waste or pollution, unless there were laws that forced them to. However, other companies have realized that there are definite advantages to reducing waste and pollution. Less waste and less pollution means a more efficient production process. The 3M Company started a program that rewarded employees for successful ideas about how to reduce waste and prevent pollution last year. This program has helped the company pollute much less and save more than a half billion dollars.27. What is the passage mainly about?A. What businesses can do to become more profitable.B. Why business is seen as the environmental bad guy.C. Business strategies for international companies today.D. How businesses can be both “green” and profitable.28. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?”“When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we do look back, it’s already too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends—or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone says to you, “You are a lucky dog.” That’s being friendly. But there is a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you deserve your luck.“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for a Saturday night. How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿势)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.31. According to this passage, the reason why we go wrong about our friends is that ________.A. even friends are annoyed when we check what they sayB. people usually state one thing and mean anotherC. we fail to listen carefully when others talkD. we tend to doubt what our friends say32. “You’re a lucky dog” probably conveys the meaning that ________.A. you’re a friendly personB. you’re envious of othersC. you do not deserve the luckD. you should thank others for your luck33. In the sentence “Maybe he doesn’t see it himself.” (Para. 2), “it” refers to ________.A. being friendlyB. a bit of envyC. lucky dogD. your luck34. According to the last paragraph, what can you do to save another mistake?A. Spend time thinking about what people really mean.B. Take a good look at the person talking.C. Focus on the look in the speaker’s eyes.D. Try to catch every word of the speaker.35. This passage is mainly about ________.A. why we misunderstand what people sayB. how to behave when we listen to othersC. why we sometimes go wrong with our friends or enemiesD. how to avoid mistakes when we communicate with peoplePart III ClozeDirections: There is a passage in this part with 10 blanks in it. Now, there are people who look for an immediate excitement from a risky activity which may only last a few minutes or even seconds.I would consider bungee jumping (蹦极) to be a good example of such an activity. You jump from a high place 200 meters above the ground with an elastic (弹性的) rope tied to your feet. You fall at up to 150 kilometers an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground. Scientists are using tree rings to learn what’s been happening on the sun’s surface for the last ten thousand years. Each ring represents a year of growth. As the tree grows, it adds a layer to its trunk, taking up chemical elements from the air. By looking at elements in the rings from a certain year, scientists can what elements were in the air that year. Dr.Stevenson is analyzing one element, carbon-14, in rings from both living and dead trees. Some rings go back almost ten thousand years to the end of the Ice Age. When Stevenson followed the carbon-14 track back in time, he found carbon-14 levels changed with the intensity of solar buring. You see,the sun has cycles.Sometimes it burns fiercely, and at other times it’s relatively calm. During the sun’s violent periods, it throws off charged formation of carbon-14 on earth. When there is more solar wind activity, less carbon-14 is produced. Ten thousand years of tree rings show that the carbon-14 level rises and falls about every 420 years. The scientists concluded that solar wind activity must follow the same cycle.61. Reading Comprehension ( 50 points )Passage OneMost people do not think of fishes and other marine animals as having voices, and of those who are aware of the fact that many of them can "speak", few understand that these "conversations" have significance. Actually, their talk may be as meaningful as much of our own. For example, some sea animals use their "voices" to locate their food in the ocean expanses; others, to let their fellows know of their whereabouts; and still others, as a means of obtaining mates. Sometimes, "speaking" may even mean the difference between life and death to a marine animal. It appears in some cases that when a predator (食肉动物) approaches, the prey depends on no more than the sounds it makes to escape.Fish sounds are important to man, also. By listening to them he can learn a great deal about the habits of the creatures that make them, the size of the schools they form, the patterns of their migrations, and the nature of the environments in which they live. He can also apply this information to the more effective utilization of the listening posts he has set up to detect enemy submarines (潜水艇) . A knowledge of fish sounds can avoid confusion and unneeded effort when a "new" sound is picked up and the sound sentry (岗哨) must decide whether or not to call an alert.36. Among the people who know that many sea animals have voices, few______.A. could understand their conversationsB. realize that they can make speechesC. could understand the significance of their conversationsD. realize that they can communicate37. His father, determined that Louis should not suffer the usual fate of blind persons at that time and become a beggar, kept him in the village school until he was ten and then entered him in the institution des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris. Louis learned to read from the three books engraved in large raised letters in the Institution library. He did exceptionally well both in academic work and at the piano and the organ, and was soon helping to teach the younger children. In 1819, the same year that Louis entered the Institution, Charles Barbier, an army captain, reported to the Academy of Sciences on a system of raised dots and dashes which enabled soldiers to read messages in the dark. Later, Barbier brought his invention to the Institution. After experimenting with it, young Braille produced a writing system using only dots, from which he gradually devised 63 separate combinations representing the letters in the French alphabet. At the request of an Englishman, he later added the letter "w", accents and punctuation marks, and mathematical signs. Although government bureaucracy prevented immediate official adoption, his system was used at the Institution as long as the director, Dr. Pignier, was in office. Pignier's successor insisted on returning to the officially approved former system, but students continued to use Braille's method secretly. Eventually, its superiority was established and it was adopted throughout France.41. Louis-Braille first learned to read with the aid of _______.A. his fatherB. special books at the InstitutionC. the village school teacherD. Captain Barbier's system of dots and dashes42. They give their owners automatic credit in stores, restaurants, and hotels, at home, across the country, and even abroad, and they make many banking services available as well. More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically, making it possible to withdraw or deposit money in scattered locations, whether or not the local branch bank is open. For many of us the "cashless society" is not on the horizon --- it's already here. While computers offer these conveniences to consumers, they have many advantages for sellers too. Electronic cash registers can do much more than simply ring up sales. They can keep a wide range of records, including who sold what, when, and to whom. This information allows businessmen to keep track of their list of goods by showing which items are being sold and how fast they are moving. Decisions to reorder or return goods to suppliers can then bemade. At the same time these computers record which hours are busiest and which employees are the most efficient, allowing personnel and staffing assignments to be made accordingly. And they also identify preferred customers for promotional campaigns. Computers are relied on by manufacturers for similar reasons. Computer-analyzed marketing reports can help to decide which products to emphasize now, which to develop for the future, and which to drop. Computers keep track of goods in stock, of raw materials on hand, and even of the production process itself.Numerous other commercial enterprises, from theaters to magazine publishers, from gas and electric utilities to milk processors, bring better and more efficient services to consumers through the use of computers.46. According to the passage, the credit card enables its owner to______.A. obtain more convenient services than other people doB. exchange foreign currency wherever he wishes toC. enjoy greater trust from the storekeeperD. withdraw as much money from the bank as he wishes to47. As a result, they are employed doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction. Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others quit from one to another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectations.Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities. The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational guidance in our educational institution. Nearly all grope (摸索) in the dark and their chief concern when they look for a job is to ask what salary is like. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or, even more important, whether the job suits them. Havinga job is more than merely providing yourself and your dependants with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of friends, leisure and interest. In choosing a career you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest. Nothing is more pathetic than taking on a job in which you have no interest, for it will not only discourage your desire to succeed in life but also ruin your talents and ultimately make you an emotional wreck (受到严重伤害的人) and a bitter person.51. The reason why some people are unlikely to succeed in life is that______.A. they have too high expectationsB. they have ruined their talentsC. they have taken on an unsuitable jobD. they change their jobs frequently52. The difficulty in choosing a suitable job lies mainly in that______.A. schools fail to offer students appropriate vocational guidanceB. many employees have no working experienceC. young people only care about how much they can earnD. much competition has to be faced53. Which of the following statements is most important according to the passage?A. Your job must set a pattern of life.B. Your job must suit your interest.C. Your job must not ruin your talents.D. 2008年江苏省普通高校“专转本”统一考试大学英语第I卷(共100分)Part I Reading Comprehension (共40分)Passage 1Sometimes, people simply do not realize they are being ill mannered. Take Ted, for example. He prides himself on speaking his mind, and has something to say on everything. But his frankness is often extremely embarrassing. He is incapable of saying, “I thought that last advertising campaign had a lot of good ideas in it, but perhaps next time we could give the copy more vitality (活力) .” Instead, he could say, “That campaign was a disaster. A child of three could have done better!”The fact that he is often right does not help. It’s not as hard as you think and it can be a lot of fun. Carol Masser has some tips on building you own Web site. “Like my living room, or my study, it’s where I put, mementos (纪念品), collectibles (收藏物), books and paintings and things that I would like to show to my f riends and relatives.”Renne Tubegeihan uses his own Web site to invite people into his virtual home. If you want to weave a Web yourself, it’s easier than you think. The first step is to get your own Web address. They’re sold by Web service providers like Microsoft, AT&T, and other local companies. That’s great if your mood is a pleasant one, but a problem i f you are sad, anxious, angry or simple lonely.Perhaps the best way to deal with such moods is to talk them out: sometimes, though, there is no one to listen. Modern pharmacology (药物学) offers a lot of tranquilizers (镇静剂), antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs. What many people don’t realize, however, is that scientists have discovered the effectiveness of several non-drug approaches to make you free from an unwanted mood. These can be just as useful as drugs, and have the added benefit of being non-poisonous. So next time you feel out of sorts, don’t head for the drug-store, try the following approach.Of all the mood-altering self-help techniques, aerobic (增氧健体的) exercise seems to be the most efficient cure for a bad mood. “If you could keep the exercise, you’d be in high spirits.” Says Kathryn Lance, author of Running for Health and Beauty.Researchers have explained biochemical and various other changes that make exercise compared favorably to drugs as a mood-raiser. Physical exertion such as housework, however, does little. The key is aerobic exercise—running, cycling, walking, swimming or other repetitive and tamed activities that boost the heart rate., increase circulation (血液循环) and improve the body’s utilization (利用) of oxygen. Do them for at least 20 minutes a session, three to five timesa week.11.
