He was saying that,“If you want people to grow up,you have to stop treating them like children.”In America, families are close but children are encouraged to be independent,to make their own decisions, even at a very early age. It’s not unusual for a child of seve n to be given an allowance(津贴)every week. The child is encouraged to save some of the money but he or she can spend it on whatever they choose, for example, buying clothes, school supplies or teenagers even have their own credit cards! That’s a big responsib ility since even adults are tempted to overspend when they have credit cards. From an early age,American children are asked for their opinions and they are included in family decision the dinner table, teenagers will be listened to on any topic, from politics to buying a new family car or where the family will go on this way, teenagers are getting practice in becoming individuals:they are learning how to stand on their own two feet. Many Chinese young people are becoming almost as interested as American teens in searching for want to express those qualities that make them unique human beings. You can see this in the way they dress, the music they listen to and the friends they choose.“Super Girl” Li Yuchun caught the imagination of Chinese teenagers on the “Super Girl” television was not the traditional “nice, young Chinese girl”.With her short, spiky hair and boy like clothes, she was telling everyone that she was different. She had the courage to be her own person and to stand on her own two feet...and she won! There is an old saying,“Everyone should carefully observe which way his heart draws him and then choose that way with all his strength.”If you do this, step by step, over a period of time, youmay find that you have become the person you always wanted to be.【解题导语】生活中几乎没有东西比责任更重要,更能够帮助别人,并让别人觉得你信任他。

Reading Comprehension:Passage 1Every parent watches eagerly the child’s achieving each new skill, the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. People often hurry the child beyond his natural learning speed but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and great worry in the child. This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use toilet too early. A young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he sees. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning chances, he loses his natural interest for lift and his wish to find out new things for himself.Learning together is a fruitful source of relationship between children and parents. By playing together, parents learn more about their children and children learn more from their parents. Toys and games that both parents and children can share are an important means of achieving this goal. Building-block toys, jigsaw and crosswords are good examples.Parents are different greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters, others are serious over times of coming home at night, being on time for meals or meals or personal cleanliness. In general, the controls exercised show the needs of the parents and the values of the people as much as the children’s happiness and interest.1. In most families, controls exercised over the children are based on .A. parent’s needs and valuesB. children’s happiness and interestC. parents’ will rather than children’s needsD. children’s needs as well as parents’ willPassage 2A Leeds University psychology professor is teaching a course to help dozens of Britons forgive their enemies. “The hatred we hold within us is cancer, “Professor Ken hart said, adding that holding in anger can lead to problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease.More than 70 people have become members in Hart’s first 20-week workshop in London-a course he says is the first of its kind in the world.“These are people who are sick and tired of living with the memory. They realize their bitterness is a poison they think they can pour out. But they end up drinking it themselves.” Said Canadian born Hart. The students meet in groups from eight to ten for two-hour workshop with a visit to an adviser every fortnight. The course, ending in July, is expected to get rid of the cancer of hate in these people.“People have lots of negative attitudes toward forgiveness,” he said. “People confuse forgiveness with forgetting.”“Forgiveness is something of changing from a negative attitude to a positive one.”Hart and his team have created instructions to provide the training needed.“The main idea is to give yo ur guidelines on how to look at various angers and how they affect you, and how to change your attitude toward the person you are angry with.” Said Norman Claringbull, a senior expert on the forgiveness project.
