一、文化背景---圣诞节
每年的12月25日,是基督教徒纪念耶稣诞生的日子,称为圣诞节。 从12月24日于翌年1月6日为圣诞节节期。节日期间,各国基督教徒都举行隆重的纪念仪式。圣诞节本来是基督教徒的节日,由于人们格外重视,它便成为一个全民性的节日,国家一年中最盛大的节日,可以和我国过春节相提并论。西方人以红、绿、白三色为圣诞色,圣诞节来临时家家户户都要用圣诞色来装饰。红色的有圣诞花和圣诞蜡烛。绿色的是圣诞树。它是圣诞节的主要装饰品,用砍伐来的杉、柏一类呈塔形的常青树装饰而成。上面悬挂着五颜六色的彩灯、礼物和纸花,还点燃着圣诞蜡烛。红色与白色相映成趣的是圣诞老人,他是圣诞节活动中最受欢迎的人物。西方儿童在圣诞夜临睡之前,要在壁炉前或枕头旁放上一只袜子,等候圣诞老人在他们入睡后把礼物放在袜子内。在西方,扮演圣诞老人也是一种习俗。

1. But behind all these things lies the true meaning of Christmas: the importance of sharing and giving love
and joy to people around us.但是隐藏在这一切背后的是圣诞节的真谛:分享与给予我们周围的人爱与欢乐的重要性。
1)lie 不及物动词,平躺,处于、存在;lie—lay—lain—lying; 撒谎, lie—lied—lied—lying. lay
及物动词,放置 ,下蛋; lay—laid—laid—laying. lay out 布置、摆放
2)the importance of… ……的重要性,of 为介词,后接名词、代词或动词-ing形式。
他没有意识到保持健康的重要性。He doesn’t _________ ______ _______ keeping healthy.
2. A Christmas Carol is a famous short novel written by Charles Dickens. 《圣诞欢歌》是查尔斯 · 狄更斯写的著名短篇小说。
written作后置定语,修饰novel。在英语中,表示被动关系的有两种形式:
一是过去分词作定语。
The novels written by Lu Xun are very educational.. ( 作定语,表被动 )。过去分词(短语)作后置定语时,相当于一个定语从句。I want to buy the novel written by Guo Jingming. =I want to buy the novel
which/that was written by Guo Jingming.
二是被动语态,在句中作谓语。
The novels were written by Lu Xun. ( 作谓语,表被动 )
3. He warn Scrooge to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him. 他告诫斯克鲁奇如果他不想最终像他一样,就要改变他的癖性。
1)warn 及物动词,警告,告诫。
warn sb. (not) to do sth. 告诫某人(不要)做某事
他告诫她要保持沉默。 He ___________ _________ ______ keep silence.
warn sb. about sth. 提醒某人注意某事
warn sb. of / against (doing ) sth. 告诫某人当心 / 提防某事
2) end up 结束,告终。
end up doing sth表示“结束做某事;做完某事”,同finish doing sth.。
end up with… 表示“以……为结束;以……为结尾”,其反义短语是begin with。
4. First, the Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back to his childhood and reminds Scrooge of his happier
days as a child. 首先,“圣诞节的过去之灵”带他回到他的童年时代,使斯克鲁奇回想起孩提时代的欢乐时光。
1)take sb. back to „..带某人回到„..
2) remind动词,提醒,使记起,使想起。remind sb. of sb. / sth. 使某人想起某人 / 某事,
