The National Association of Colleges and Employers collects information on the college job market. NACE’s latest survey in March found that employers expected to hire twenty-two percent fewer graduates this year than last. Most blamed the recession. The most recent student survey showed that just (2) one-fifth of those who looked for jobs before graduation have one by now. This is compared to half of students who had looked for a job by this time two years ago. But one difference; fewer of this year’s graduates have started to search for jobs. Still, NACE found no big increase in graduates who plan to stay in school and avoid the job market. About twenty-seven percent said they plan to go to graduate school, compared to about twenty-four percent a year ago. Engineering and accounting graduates were more likely to have started their job search already and to have accepted a job. These are among the best paid professions for people with just a college degree. So how can students increase their chances for a job? The most effective tool is a school’s career counseling center. (3) Counselors can help students with job applications and preparing for interviews. They also let students know about job openings and events like job recruitment fairs. They can also help first-year students decide what to study.1.In America, the traditional time for graduations isA.in May.B.in September.C.in May and June.D.in June and September.正确答案:C 涉及知识点:短文2.Two years ago, among those students looking for jobs before graduation, how many students could find one?A.20% of them.B.22% of them.C.40% of them.D.44% of them.正确答案:C 涉及知识点:短文3.Which is NOT mentioned as part of career counseling center’s work?A.To help apply jobs.B.To recommend interns.C.To explain interview process.D.To introduce recruitment fairs.正确答案:B 涉及知识点:短文听力原文: A few weeks before Valentine’s Day, the students were told to make boxes in which we would put our Valentine’s gifts. The day finally arrived. Each student put the box they had made on Mrs. Toalson’s desk. (5)One box had the words “I love you, basketball”written on it. Another box looked like a mailbox, while a box was in the shape of a dolphin. Mine was a pink piggy box with “Happy Valentine’s Day” written on it. Mrs. Toalson handed out pieces of paper. She then told us to vote for the “Best Boxes”. The winners would be awarded certificates. After we voted, Mrs. Toalson asked us to collect our boxes and take out the gifts we had for our friends. She also took out a bag of gifts for us. All the students exchanged their gifts. I gave out shells from my hometown in China. Everyone loved them as they were so different. I was thrilled with all the gifts I had received: cards, bookmarks, pencils and chocolates. At last, Mrs. Toalson handed out the certificates for the winners of the best boxes. Everyone waited in anticipation. (6)”The cutest box is Mary’s pink piggy,”Mrs. Toalson announced. Wow, I was one of the winners! This is partly because women cannot tell jokes, but also because we are better at self-awareness and therefore know that our speech is average and the audience would rather be doing something else—(7) thoughts that do little to enhance performance. (8)To combat fear and innate hopelessness. I try quite hard to be better. Every time a book about public speaking arrives on my desk, I skim it for tips. Mostly they tell you to “relax” and to “ be yourself”—(9) which is downright irresponsible. This works only for the one in a billion who is born a brilliant speaker. Being good, for everyone else means reaching such an elevated level of nervousness and artifice that you can present an entirely convincing picture of authenticity and relaxation. I have only come across two bits of helpful advice. The first is practice, practice, practice. This is a bore because it takes a lot of time, but there is no way round it. (10) The second is to junk all aids. PowerPoint is a crutch. It is an ugly thing in itself and must be thrown away if you want to talk smoothly. Equally, you must never read a speech. Write it, learn it and then leave it at home, speaking with minimal notes.7.Which is NOT mentioned as the reason why women are poor at public speaking?A.Women cannot tell jokes.B.Women are better at self-awareness.C.Women do little to enhance performance.D.Women know their speech is average.正确答案:C 涉及知识点:短文8.According to the passage, which of the following statements is CORRECT?A.Men are poorer than women at public speaking.B.Books on public speaking work for people poor at speaking.C.Being good means reaching a usual level of artifice.D.The speaker tries hard to combat innate hopelessness.正确答案:D 涉及知识点:短文9.What’s the speaker’s attitude towards books about public speaking?A.Positive.B.Grateful.C.Neutral.D.Distrustful.正确答案:D 涉及知识点:短文10.The speaker suggests all the following EXCEPT A.writing a speech.B.using PowerPoint.C.practicing more.D.taking minimal notes.正确答案:B 涉及知识点:短文。

Each statement contains information given in one ofthe paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information isderived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraphis marked with a letter.Answer the questions by marking thecorresponding letter on Answer Sheet .Companies must decide: Is a business trip worth it?Competition can spur travel[A]Business travel dropped precipitously last year. The U.S. Travel A says roughly $215 billion was spent on business travel in 2009, down from $244 billion in 2008. The travel industry predicts an uptick this year. There was a1.5% increase in spending on travel and entertainment during the first quarterof 2010 compared with that period last year, says Mike McCormick, executive director of the National Business Travel Association, or NBTA,and a 2.8% increa the first quarter of 2010 over the fourth quarter of 2009.[B]And that travel can spur more—for competitive reasons. "The stabilizin and growing economy puts companies, competitors, back out on the road — esp sales departments," says Kevin Mitchell of the Business TravelCoalition. "So you can't really sit back like you were able to comfortably do through most of 2009, comforted in the knowledge that most of your competitors were scaling travel way back as well."[C]Some business-travel analysts say that for businesses to profit and grow, travel is essential. An NBTA study conducted by IHS Global Insight determined that for every dollar spent on corporate travel, the average business would see $15 in profits. "The only way to grow sales is to go out and get them," McCormick takes is for (a company) to lose that piece of business becausetheir competitor showed up and they didn't, and they're back on the road."[D]Ultimately when evaluating whether to hit the road, corporate travel experts say, companies are trying to figure if the potential for revenue in the near future o line is greater than the cost of the trip. Such decisions are oftenas much art as science. They depend on many factors, including a company's priorities, the service or product it's selling, and the status of a particular client relationship and transaction.[E]"It's very much down to individual companies and what they prioritize," says Eric Bausman, of Carlson Wagonlit Travel, a global firm that helps companies manage corporate travel programs. "Typically ... those initial introductory meetings, the very first sales calls until you make the sale, those a you really target for being in the room with the customer." Once a relationshipis established,Bausmansays, a business might consider visiting the frequently, supplementing "those trips with virtual meetings: cellphone calls, Web meetings and video conferences."范文范例指导学习Giving technology a try[F]The economic downturn has compelled many businesses to consider or betterutilize virtual meeting technology, corporate travel experts say. Options include telephone conference calls, streaming a meeting via the Internet,or telepresencing, in which large screens can make meeting participants in anotherpart of the world appear to be practically sitting across the conference table. The Association of Corporate Travel Executives says the percentage of its members who were "seriously looking" into using videoconferencing rose from 21% in 2007to 81% in 2009.The cost of communication technology has dropped and quality has improved, industry analysts say.[G]Megan Costello, executive director of the Association of Corporate TravelExecutives, says it's increasingly being used by companies to cut d own on internal meetings that would require travel—trips that manyof the association's members said were using up to 40%of the corporate travel budget but not producing revenue.[H]An American Express Business Travel survey conducted in January found 74% of respondents said they use or plan to use audio conferencing as an alternativeto travel, while 71.6% were using or planned to use Web-based online conferencing or videoconferencing as an option."In the vast majority of our client discussions ...in terms of new enhancements with our program or areas of interest they'd like us to explore, virtual meetings are always at the top of the list,"says Issa Jouaneh, a vice president at American Express Business Travel.[I]American Express Business Travel launched its virtual-meeting expert service in August. Consultants work with a client considering a corporate trip, askingabout the meeting's goals and such things as the number of people who would attend. Based on the answers, they advise whether a virtual meeting might be more efficient.[J]Many businesses are also using corporate online booking tools to help would-be road warriors decide whether to go or stay.GetThere — a business unit of Sabre Travel network, which provides such a tool—says that last year many companies movedthe question asking about the purpose of the trip from the end of the booking process to the beginning. Depending on the reason you give—"training," for example, or"customer visit"—a message is triggered as to whether to consider an alternative such as a Web conference or if you'll need to get approval forthe trip.Of GetThere's more than3,000clients,the number using dynamic messaging — which also advises on preferred suppliers if you are going to take the trip — more than doubled last year.[K]Eventually, says Chris Kroeger, GetThere's president, the booking calculate which way to go. But even if the dollar figures say a teleconferenceis the way to go, Kroeger says, the person involved should be able to say ifthe meeting is best done face-to-face.When only a meeting will do[L]Although some advisers expect some business trips will be re technology, they say technology won't become a wholesale substitute for meetin in-person."It's not that we're going to suddenly switch from all face-to-face to all by virtue of technology," says John Millikin, who teaches strategy and human resources management at Arizona State University. "You m have a rise in the use of technology to supplement face-to-face meetin you are getting a little bit of the better of two worlds."[M]Last year, Knight, the machinery company executive from Columbus, says his business trips were reduced by at least 25%. He adds that his company has use videoconferencing for some training and is exploring using it for othe as well. Still, he says, "I just don't believe you can exactly boil it down to:'Here are guidelines. Either you can close business with this trip or there'sno trip.' I think that's a mistake." The impact of each trip has to be examined, Knight says."There are certain places where it's obvious I need to go "Sometimes that's to hold a hand. Sometimes it's to help them understand on a project that you're just not getting through by e-mail or phone or d[N]For some businesses, there are no complex calculations to make. Ear who with his wife has an advertising and Webmarketing agency in Fort M says that during the depths of the recession, they took pay cuts and red fees. But they refused to cut travel. And he's not about to start now. "If a customer wants to see you,you go,"Quenzel says."If you even think th might want to see you or could use a little TLC, you go see them. And the same with a prospect....You don't cut the things that involve(serving)yo or winning new business. It's just stupid."1. These have served to keep all but the most danger-loving tourists away for decades. But under Álvaro Uribe, Colombia's president since 2002, violence has fallen steadily and many parts of the country have become safe. Now the government is trying to replace conventional images of Colombia with different ones: white-sand beaches, colonial cities, jungle-clad mountains and placid coffee farms. The tourism campaign has begun at home. This month, during the mid-year school holidays, thousands of Colombians have enjoyed the newly-recovered freedom to travel, using specially policed routes from major cities to favourite holiday spots. The aim now is to convince foreigners. With a promotional budget of just $4m this year, the tourism agency is concentrating its efforts on tour operators and cruise and airline executives. This spring, it invited 130 of them to see the country's beaches, its coffee farms and the Amazon region.Mr. Uribe has himself lobbied bosses of cruise-ship firms. This seems to have paid off. In May, Royal Caribbean announced that from next year some of its ships would call at Cartagena, a colonial walled port on the north coast. The Florida Caribbean Cruise Association held its annual meeting in the city last week.Tourism officials expect 1.5m foreign visitors this year, more than 50% up from the 925,000 in 2005. Mexico, Latin America's top tourist destination, attracts 20m foreigners a year. Lonely Planet, a travel publisher, has chosen Colombia as one of its top ten travel hotspots for 2006, in large part because of the improvement in safety. But care is still needed. Lonely Planet advises tourists to steer clear of Chocó on the Pacific coast, Putumayo in the far south and “anywhere east of the Andes”, where there are still guerrillas. America's State Department and the British Foreign Office also warn travellers against wandering into rural areas.Even so, groups of foreign hikers have recently taken to visiting Ciudad Perdida, one of the largest and oldest pre-Columbian settlements in the Americas, in the jungles of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. The area is still home to leftist guerrillas and remnants of their arch-enemies, the right-wing paramilitary militias. But the fact that many other parts of what is a large and physically beautiful country are now safe to visit amounts to progress.81. To most people, Colombia is a place full ofA. attraction.B. stimulus.C. surprise.D. hazard.82. It can be inferred from the passage thatA. Colombians wished to travel around the country for long.B. travel lines are guarded by the police to ensure safety.C. a large number of foreigners will be attracted to Colombia.D. the promotional budget for tourism will increase next year.83. The phrase “paid off” in paragraph Three probably meansA. come off.B. fallen through.C. been expensive.D. been possible.84. Which of the following is a safer place for travelers to go to?A. Chocó.B. Mexico.C. Putumayo.D. Ciudad Perdida.85. The best title for the passage isA. Colombian’s Travel.B. The Beautiful Colombia.C. Come to Sunny Colombia.D. The Future of Colombia.TEXTBI know now that the man who sat with me on the old wooden stairs that hot summer night over thirty-five years ago was not a tall man. But to a five-year-old, he was a giant. We sat side by side, watching the sun go down behind the old Texaco service station across the busy street. A street that I was never allowed to cross unless accompanied by an adult or at the very least, an older sibling.Cherry-scented smoke from Grampy's pipe kept the hungry mosquitoes at bay while gray, wispy swirls danced around our heads. Now and again, he blew a smoke ring and laughed as I tried to target the hole with my finger. I, clad in a cool summer nightie, and Grampy, his sleeveless T-shirt, sat watching the traffic. We counted cars and tried to guess the color of the next one to turn the corner.Once again, I was caught in the middle of circumstances. The fourth born of six children, it was not uncommon that I was either too young or too old for something. This night I was both. While my two baby brothers slept inside the house, my three older siblings played with friends around the corner, where I was not allowed to go. I stayed with Grampy, and that was okay with me. I was where I wanted to be. My grandfather was baby-sitting while my mother, father and grandmother went out.“Thirsty?" Grampy asked, never removing the pipe from his mouth“Yes," was my reply. " How would you like to run over to the gas station there and get yourself a bottle of coke?"I couldn't believe my ears. Had I heard right? Was he talking to me? On my family's modest income, coke was not a part of our budget or diet. A few tantalizing sips was all I had ever had, and certainly never my own bottle."Okay," I replied shyly, already wondering how I would get across the street. Surely Grampy was going to come with me.Grampy stretched his long leg out straight and reached his huge hand deep into the pocket. I could hear the familiar jangling of the loose change he always carried. Opening his fist, he exposed a mound of silver coins. There must have been a million dollars there. He instructed me to pick out a dime. After he deposited the rest of the change back into his pocket, he stood up. "Okay," he said, helping me down the stairs and to the curb, " I'm going to stay here and keep an ear out for the babies. I'll tell you when it's safe to cross. You go over to the coke machine, get your coke and come back out. Wait for me to tell you when it's safe to cross back."My heart pounded. I clutched my dime tightly in my sweaty palm. Excitement took my breath away.86. We can infer from the first two paragraphs that the authorA. had brothers or sisters.B. was a friend of the man’sC. enjoyed sitting on stairs.D. like Grampy’s way of smoking.87. The author stayed with Grampy becauseA. he had nothing to do.B. he was forced to do it.C. he did’t like his brothers.D. he was allowed to go nowehere.88. Grampy didn’t like the author’s brothers.89. According to the passage, which of the following might be an exaggeration?A. But to a five-year-old, he was a giant.B. I clutched my dime tightly in my sweaty palm.C. There must have been a million dollars there.D. Surely Grampy was going to come with me.TEXTCAs John Updike once sourly but accurately observed, these days we are all conditioned to accept newness, whatever it costs. Very soon, no doubt, Apple’s tablet will seem as an essential tool of modern living to us as the electric trouser-press did to our grandparents. At least, it will until someone manufactures an even smarter, thinner and more essential tablet. Which, if recent history is any guide, will be in approximately six months’ time. And that’s the bewildering thing, isn’t it? Turn your back for a moment and you fin d that every electronic item in your possession is as dated as a tombstone, Which wouldn’t be so bad in itself. Why should you care if people snigger because you use a mobile phone that actually predates Barack Obama’s presidency? But try getting the thin g repaired when it goes wrong. It’s like walking into a pub and asking for a lemonade. You will be made to feel like some sort of time-traveller from the 1970s. “Don’t you want an upgrade?” you will be asked, incredulously. “It’s not worth repairing that old thing.”The enormous number of electronic items now regularly chucked out by British families is clearly one big problem. But this ceaseless discarding of gadgets has other consequences. It contributesgreatly, I think, to the uneasy feeling that modern life is whizzing by faster than we can keep up. By the time I’ve learnt how to use a gadget it’s already broken, lost or redundant.I don’t lament the pace of change. On the contrary, I’m dazzled by those high-tech designers who can somehow fit a camera, music-player, computer, phone and satellite navigation system into a plastic slab no bigger than a packet of fags. If the geniuses who dreamt up that could also find a way to keep the Tube running on the first snowy day of winter, they would be making real progress for humanity. What I do regret, however, is the built-in instant obsolescence of so many household items. My parents bought a wooden wireless in 1947, the year they were married. If 1973, the year I went to university, it was still pumping out Family Favourites and The World at One. It sat in the kitchen like an old friend—which, in a way, it was. It certainly spoke to us more than we spoke to each other on some grumpy mornings.True, it had idiosyncrasies. You had to know exactly how to tickle its knobs or tweak its dials to conjure discernible speech and music from the crackle. But that was its mystique. When my mum replaced it with a new-style radio that could also play cassette-tapes I felt a real sense of loss. Such is the frenetic turnover of 21st-century technology that there’s no time to forge emotional bonds. Even if Apple’s new wonder-toys turn out to be the most significant tablets since the big ones that Moses dragged down the mountain, I very much doubt that they will resist the here-today-gone-tomorrow trend.90. The author’s attitude towards the popularity of Apple’s tablet isA. skeptical.B. passive.C. hostile.D. affirmative.91. It can be inferred from the passage that if you use an outdated mobile phoneA. you probably will be laughed at.B. you will be advised to change it.C. you will feel uneasy yourself.D. you will be interested in new models.92. The phrase “chucked out” in Paragraph Four probably meansA. thrown up.B. hunted downC. broken off.D. cast off.93. According to the author, many new inventionsA. should be changed to serve the development of society.B. should be evaluated mainly in terms of their utility.C. don’t contribute greatly to the advancement of mankind.D. hinder the advancement of mankind to a certain degree.94. Which of the following statements is NOT true of the wooden wireless?A. The author probably missed it after it was replaced.B. It accompanied the author9s family for many years.C. The author enjoyed tickling its knobs very much.D. It had been used for dozens of years before it was replaced.95. According to the author, Apple's new wonder-toysA. prevent people from social contact.B. are likely to go out of date soon.C. will be as popular as other tablets.D. are bound to win over the big tablets.96. The passage aims to tell us that the authorA. misses the old things he used in the past.B. wants some new technology that lasts.C. foresees the future of Apple's tablet.D. worries about the direction of new technologyTEXTDHundreds of millions of Indians cannot prove they exist. They have no birth certificate, no driving licence, no social-security number. So they find it hard to open a bank account, borrow money or draw on government services.Nandan Nilekani, an Indian software billionaire, volunteered to give every one of his 1.2 billion compatriots an identity number tied to biometric data. The Indian government thought this a wonderful idea, but there was a snag. The proposed database was ten times larger than the largest biometric database in existence. How was a poor country going to build it?Mr. Nilekani turned to the Indian diaspora for help. He called up ethnic Indians who had done well in Silicon Valley. Before long they were calling their friends and urging them to join in. The overseas Indians brought oodles of useful experience. Raj Mashruwala had helped to set up the number-crunching system for the New York Stock Exchange. Srikanth Nadhamuni had helped set up Healtheon, a big health IT firm. The team assembled in Bangalore, set up a whiteboard in a rented apartment and started brainstorming. The programme went from start-up to roll-out in little more than a year, with the first identity numbers allocated in October 2010. If everything works as planned, poor Indians will for the first time be able to prove who they are, thus making themselves more creditworthy.Mr. Nadhamuni thinks all sorts of services can be grafted onto the national ID system. A migrant labourer with no bank account will be able to wire money to his mother by sending it to her ID number. His mother will be able to pick up the cash at her local village shop, which will have a miniature scanner for her fingerprints. The shopkeeper will charge a small fee for the service. Villagers will no longer have to waste days trekking to the nearest town to get to a bank.Brainy globetrotters are rarely rootless. Even the most cosmopolitan usually feel an affinity with others who share the same language, culture or heritage. That is why diaspora networks are so powerful, and why some of the world’s most influential people rely on them so heavily. Some diasporas are vast and global. For example, there are an estimated 25m non-resident Indians and 60m overseas Chinese, including significant numbers in nearly all countries. They create a web of cross-border connections. Boffins are 30-50% more likely to cite a paper by someone of their own ethnicity than you would expect if such ties made no difference, according to William Kerr of Harvard Business School. Diaspora networks speed the flow of information, the lifeblood of science and commerce. They also foster trust. A Lebanese trader in west Africa will feel safe doing business with a Lebanese trader in Latin America because one man’s high-school friend knows the family of the other’s wife back in Beirut. That means they can seal big deals with a single phone call. If one cheats the other, he will be shut out of the entire Lebanese diaspora trading network.97. The word "snag" in Paragraph Two probably meansA. rumor.B. barrier.C. matter.D. business.98. Which of the following statements is TRUE of Mr. Nilekani's programme?A. It will benefit most of the poor Indians without identity.B. It was launched a year ago and will be completed soon.C. Many overseas experts volunteered to join it.D. Many experienced experts were involved in it.99. It can be inferred from the passage that in India,A. banks are hardly found in rural areas of it.。

Many populations that formerly relied solely on rice or coarser grains as their main source of carbohydrates show a preference for compounded bakery products as new industry and increased incomes make them more widely accessible. Japan is an outstanding example of countries following this trend. The United States has shown a steady downward trend in per capita consumption of cereal-based foods for many years, and the consumption of sweet bakery foods, such as cakes or pastry, has been increasingly displac ing bread consumption.Probably 95% of the white bread sold in the United States is enriched with thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, and iron and about 30% of the 50 states have laws requiring white bread enrichment. Formerly, calcium and vitamin D were frequently added to enriched bread, but lack of consumer demand and questionable nutritional benefit led to gradual phasing out of these enrichments. India has attempted to encourage consumption ofprotein-enriched bread, with some success. Except for research projects, little has been done in other countries, however. In areas where bakery products comprise a large proportion of the diet, they could provide an ideal vehicle for nutritional supplementation. Then need for better quality protein in the daily diet occurs mostly in the developing countries, where carbohydrate foods -- usually cereals -- are the basic components of the diet and therefore the logical protein carriers.66. Japan is used in this passage to illustrate a fashion in many countries to _____.A. enrich breadB. invest more in food industryC. increase consumption of bakery foodsD. increase a reliance on rice and grains67. According to the passage, popular cereals could be the best way in developing countries to _____.A. supplement the dietB. displace rice consumptionC. increase reliance on carbohydratesD. phase out necessary bread enrichments68. From the passage, we learn that there is a worldwide trend towards _____.A. enriching the nutritional value of breadB. increas ing the consumption of proteinC. using bakery products as a source of carbohydratesD. using grains, such as rice, as a source of carbohydratesTEXT BThe CBI will this week announce a Think British campaign aimed at cutting imports and stimulating home industries. The man behind the move is Sir Derek Ezra, chairman of the National Coal Board, who has persuaded the CBI's council that firms can buy British supplies without paying more for their patriotism. The target of a conference the CBI is calling ear ly in the New Year will be the 50 biggest manufacturing companies in the private sector and 16 leading firms in distribution who together spend £35bn a year.Sir Derek says "By actively pursuing a policy on the line I have described they could have a major impact in stimulating industrial competitiveness and growth". Nationalized industries have already switched up to £100m worth of their buying from foreign suppliers to British firms in the past year.In a paper which went to the CBI council last week, Sir Derek produced figures to demonstrate how, by hunting out suppliers who were prepared to co-operate closely in developing equipment and materials at the right quality and price, the nationalized enterprises have succeeded in getting what they want and in boosting Britain's exports. The NCB itself, at the same time as cutting back the import content of its annual '1,000m worth of purchases to 2.6%, has helped the British mining equipment industry to raise its exports from £26m to £129m in two years. The public enterprises together, who spent up to £10bn on goods and services each year, have cut the amount they buy abroad from 4.3% to 3.4% over the past year.Sir Derek emphasizes that this has not been done by sacrificing profitability. But, Debenhams, one of the handful of retail chains who have been pursing a similar policy, says that it has had to accept the a cut in its own margins so far to make it work. The chain has replaced £25m worth of Italian shirts and socks by British products during the past nine months.69. One of the aims of Think British campaign is to _____.A. cut exportsB. stimulate importsC. develop new productsD. encourage domestic industries70. Which of the following is true about nationalized industries?A. They bought £100m of British supplies in the past year.B. They bought £129m of foreign supplies in the past year.C. They bought £1,000m of British supplies in the past year.D. They bought £26m of foreign supplies in the past year.71. The British mining equipment industry is _____.A. privately ownedB. publicly ownedC. jointly ownedD. internationally owned72. The word "this" (final paragraph) refers to _____.A. the public sector.B. the Think British campaignC. the British mining equipment industryD. reduced purchases of foreign goodsTEXT CJust a few seconds of frenzied passion on the floor of the public bar and things would never be the same again for Michelle. It only took a few minutes to ruin her life. The end of all her hopes and dreams, her childhood and teenage innocence, all stripped away the first and only time she ever surrendered herself to a man.No one saw it happen, but the news spread fast, it wasn't long before the whole of Britain knew what had happened in the Queen Victoria -- Dirty Den, the landlord, had done it again. Only this time he had gone too far.For the millions who have agonized with her, Michelle's pregnancy seems a terrible price to pay for one mistake -- a little youthful stupidity. Yet, with the increasing number of teenage single mums, it's not just a problem dreamed up for a soap opera -- as actress Susan Tully, who plays Michelle, has discovered from hundreds of letters: It's a dilemma many young girls face.As she talks about Michelle and her baby, it's easy to understand why Susan has been sosuccessful in the role. Even though she'd never had an experience like it herself, it's one she recognizes all too clearly from what happens to some of her contemporaries at school. Michelle might almost be her younger sister rather than a fictional part in Britain's most successful soap opera.Susan says that she never became involved with men during her school years because of her work. With her time being split equally between school and television studios, she was busy learning lines while her girlfriends were dating boys. While they went out to discuss and parties in the evening she was desperately catching up on her schoolwork. "I don't feel as though I've missed out on anything," she insists. "And unlike a lot of my friends, I've got plenty to look forward to. That's what's so nice about my boyfriend now. It's very comfortable and there's lots to find out about each other.""It's then that I feel sad for Michelle. When she should be going out and having fun, she's having to worry about whether she's going to breastfeed the baby. She's had to say goodbye to being a teenage."73. How did Susan avoid the dangers that many of her school friends faced?A. By thinking of Michelle as her younger sister.B. By doing many projects at home.C. By working hard at school and at the TV studio.D. By dating her boyfriend during her school years.74. According to the passage, Susan Tully is sorry for Michelle because Michelle has to_____.A. grow old quicklyB. catch up on her schoolworkC. write many letters every dayD. work late in the evening75. The best title for this passage is _____.A. Sorry for Susan TullyB. Sorry for MichelleC. Susan's School YearsD. Susan's Hopes and DreamsTEXT DHelium is a gas that is lighter than air. It is the second lightest of all gases. (Only hydrogen is lighter.) Helium is inert, which means it will not react chemically with anything. It cannot burn. It has no color, odor, or taste. The first people who saw evidence of helium saw it as a bright yellow line in spectroscopes they aimed at the sun during the eclipse of 1868. They knew that they were seeing something new, and that the chemical element that caused the line in the spectroscope was unknown on earth. The unknown element was named helium, from the Greek word helios, meaning "sun". Later, in 1895, the same brilliant yellow line was seen coming from a Norwegian mineral which produces a little helium by its radioactivity. The line in the spectroscope was identified as caused by the gas helium. This element is the only one that was discovered off the earth before it was discovered in the earth.Almost all commercial helium is produced in the United States. The plants for separating helium from natural gas are in Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico. Most of the natural gassupplies are controlled by the government and administered by the United States Bureau of Mines. The government is interested in helium because the gas has military uses. Helium has been used for some time to inflate blimps, weather balloons, advertising balloons, and toy balloons. Helium is valuable for filling balloons because it does not burn, as hydrogen does. This prevents dangerous explosions. Recent uses of helium are far more important than any of these familiar uses. Now helium gas may be the cooling gas, or coolant, pumped through the reactors of some nuclear power plants to keep them from getting too hot. It is also used in electric arc welding because the gas does not combine with hot metal. helium is used, too, in rocket fuel tanks as a means of maintaining pressure during flight.76. The chemical element helium is named from the Greek word which means _____.A. light airB. yellow lineC. sunD. earth77. Helium is valuable to nuclear power plants because it _____.A. is lighter than airB. may be used as a cooling gasC. does not combine with hot objectsD. does not burnPART VI WRITING [45 MIN.]SECTION A COMPOSITION [35 MIN.]Write a composition of about 150 words on the following topic:ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF HOME COMPUTERSYou are to write in three parts. In the first part, state just ONE major advantage or disadvantage of home computers. In the second part, give one or two reasons to support your point of view.In the last part, bring what you have written to a natural conclusion.Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriacy. On the Extravagant Spending Among College Students____________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)Directions:In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1. For questions 1~7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). For questions 8~10, complete the sentences with the information given in the Passage. As the worst global downturn since the second world war forces UK companies to cut down the staff at a record pace, more and more Britons are thinking about starting their own business.Striking out on your own in such times might seem risky but if you've been sitting on a great business idea, being made redundant (被解雇的) could provide you with the starting point you need. In a downturn, competition declines and office space, stock and advertising become cheaper. It will encourage you to barter and teach you how to run a business on a budget. Downturns often encourage creativity as well—Apple, Microsoft and Facebook were all recession startups.Ray Gaines, entrepreneur and author of Start Y our Own Business, says that if someone sets up a business now, it would take about six months to get it up and running, by which time Britain is expected to have climbed out of recession and consumers should have a new-found confidence.Setting up on your own will by no means be easy, but the tips below should help get you thinking about the steps and potential problems you may face.1. Making a business planIf you decide to take the plunge to go it alone, the first thing you must do is to draw up a realistic business plan-this is a working document that describes the business, its objectives, its strategies, the market it is in and its financial forecasts. A bank would not consider lending money to help start a business unless you could show it a detailed business plan.A template(模版) for a business plan can be found on the government's Business Link website. It also contains information about local workshops which offer guidance on writing business plans.A good business plan should be at least half a dozen pages long and must be well presented in a binder. "Good presentation goes a long way and says a lot about you," says Gaines.2. Getting access to financeOnce you have a detailed business plan and enough evidence to believe that your idea is viable (可行的), it is time to go and see the bank manager. Unless you have sufficient funds or family or friends who are willing and able to financially support your business, you will most likely need to obtain a business loan from a bank.It is important to shop around to find which bank offers the best deal and who you feel most comfortable with. "The important thing is that they give you the support you need and that you get on with them. Make sure what you're getting is right for you and your business," says Sear.Y ou must also expect that, in these straitened(贫困的) times, some bank managers will turn you down oroffer you less money, but Gaines urges you to not be deterred. "I was turned down by what was then Midland Bank for my printing business and was told by the manager that it was unlikely to get off the ground. The business has just celebrated its 14th successful year of trading," he says.As well as a loan, banks can offer a facility. This is an amount of money reserved for you that you can draw from when you need it. It is effectively a form of a loan but you do not necessarily use it in one go. If you use a facility, you only pay interest on the money you have actually used.A number of organizations such as the Prince's Trust, and government-backed schemes including the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme, offer grants and loans to people who want to start a business.3. Developing a survival strategyY ou must make sure you are running your business correctly and abiding by the law. Phil McCabe, a spokesman for the Forum of Private Business (FPB), says: "One of the biggest stumbling blocks to people starting a business can be understanding all the legislation. That can be tax, employment, trade, health and safety or environment—related to name but a few, and it can be quite confusing if you've never run your own business."Y our bank manager, accountant and HM Revenue & Customs can help you in regards to your finances and taxes while organizations such as the FPB, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and Business Link can give you advice on all aspects of running a business. It is important to keep things simple and not to get carried away with your plans before you know they are going to work. During the startup phase, it can be easy to make over-optimistic forecasts, but there can be serious consequences for your business if your projections are not realistic.4. Getting yourself noticedIn order to make your business a success, you must ensure that consumers know it exists.Choosing how to advertise your company depends on what type of business it is. For example, if you are running a local plumbing company then delivering leaflets in your area would be the best option.Gaines recommends using a company that delivers between 5 000 and 10 000 leaflets in one go. "A man who runs a carpet business delivered 10 000 leaflets a year ago and is still receiving calls from that drop. Leaflets sit on shelves for a long time."Newspaper advertising is also a good option for local businesses. It may be worth considering running a series of adverts as opposed to a one-off, because people will notice it more.Larger businesses such as manufacturing companies would benefit more from using brochures as opposed to leaflets. The shelf life of a brochure is generally reckoned to be about two years. If you are advertising your business through a website you must make sure it appears on a search engine, which can be achieved through the use of Google Ad Words. This places relevant ads on the right-hand side of the search results pages.5. Sizing up the competitionTo ensure you attract customers, you must offer something different to your competitors. V isit similar businesses in your town, gather as much knowledge as you can about them and try to price competitively. Traveling farther a field to look at similar businesses could also be a smart move--they won't view you as a direct competitor and will therefore be likelier to share information with you. Copy the things they do well but try to be alert to their errors, too.1.More and more Britons start a business because _________.A) the economy is growing B) the war broke outC) the unemployment is on the rise D) the economy is recovering2.What does Ray Gaines say about economy in Britain?A) It influences the world economy. B) It goes rapidly from bad to worse.C) It has been out of economic depression. B) Not running a legitimate business.C) Not having enough employees. D) Not understanding all the legal knowledge.7.Which of the following can give you advice on employment?A) HM Revenue & Customs. B) Y our friends.C) Y our accountant. Model Test 7PART ⅠWRITING SECTION A COMPOSITIONShould Students Wear School Uniform? As we know, wearing school uniform is indispensable for Japanese students, where as for American students, it’s not such a case, so should Chinese students wear school uniform? Some believe in the advantages of wearing school uniform. Firstly, uniform can cultivate collective spirit, which is typical of Japanese students. Secondly, schools can be kept in good order with uniform since the outsiders will be recogniz ed immediately. Besides, wearing school uniform can help students develop simple life habits. However, others don’t think so. They claim that wearing school uniform will deprive students of individuality, which is always the source of amazing creativity. As for collective spirit, attending sports games seems to be more effective, and wearing school uniform doesn’t result in simple life habit as we expect. In my opinion, diffe rent schools can have different policies. It may be good for elementary school students to wear school uniform, but this is not strongly recommended for college students.SECTION B NOTE-WRITINGDear Betty,We are planning a little dinner to celebrate o ur tenth anniversary, and of course we want you and Tom to come. 大学英语四级考试模拟试题7(标准答案)Part I WritingComputer Games on CampusToday, many college students are absorbed in playing computer games. Maybe there is some truth in the statement that computer games are fun and will train one's reactivity, determination, and attention. However, the merits of computer games can never compensate for the negative effects they have. First, it is very time-consuming to play computer games. The game fans have sacrificed almost all their time thus they have no time to attend class, to take exercises, or even to date. Upon graduation many will regret that they have wasted the precious college time on nothing. Second, those who play computer games excessively would easily fall victim to various illnesses. For example, game fans always fix their eyes on the screen; therefore, they are likely to be near-sighted. Third, the game fans, who spend their time before the lifeless computers, usually overlook their relationship with others. They would find that they have some mental or psychic problems.Part II Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)这篇文章向人们介绍了在五一外出度假期间怎样保持女人漂亮本色。
PART V READING COMPREHENSION [25 MIN]In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.TEXT ARacket, din clamor, noise, whatever you want to call it, unwanted sound is America’s most widespread nuisance. But noise is more than just a nuisance. It constitutes a real and present danger to people’s health. Day and night, at home, at work, and at play, noise can produce serious physical and psychological stress. No one is immune to this stress. Though we seem to adjust to noise by ignoring it, the ear, in fact, never closes and the body still responds—sometimes with extreme tension, as to a strange sound in the night. The annoyance we feel when faced with noise is the most common outward symptom of the stress building up inside us. Indeed, because irritability is so apparent, legislators have made public annoyance the basis of many noise abatement programs. The more subtle and more serious health hazards associated with stress caused by noise traditionally have been given much less attention. Nevertheless, when we are annoyed or made irritable by noise, we should consider these symptoms fair warning that other thing may be happening to us, some of which may be damaging to our health.Of many health hazards to noise, hearing loss is the most clearly observable and measurable by health professionals. The other hazards are harder to pin down. For many of us, there may be a risk that exposure to the stress of noise increases susceptibility to disease and infection. The more susceptible among us may experience noise as a complicating factor in heart problems and other diseases. Noise that causes annoyance and irritability in health persons may have serious consequences for these already ill in mind or body.Noise affects us throughout our lives. For example, there are indications of effects on the unborn child when mothers are exposed to industrial and environmental noise. During infancy and childhood, youngsters exposed to high noise levels may have trouble falling asleep and obtaining necessary amounts of rest. Why, then, is there not greater alarm about these dangers? Perhaps it is because the link between noise and many disabilities or diseases has not yet been conclusively demonstrated. Perhaps it is because we tend to dismiss annoyance as a price to pay for living in the modern world. It may also be because we still think of hearing loss as only an occupational hazard.1.In Paragraph 1, the phrase “immune to” are used to mean .A.unaffected byB.hurt byC.unlikely to be seen byD.unknown by2.The author’s attitude toward noise would best be described as .A.unrealisticB.traditionalC.concernedD.hysterical3.Which of the following best states the main idea of the passage?A.Noise is a major problem; most people recognize its importance.B.Although noise can be annoying, it is not a major problem.C.Noise is a major problem and has not yet been recognized as such.D.Noise is a major problem about which nothing can be done.4.The author condemns noise essentially because it .A.is against the lawB.can make some people irritableC.is a nuisanceD.in a ganger to people’s health5.The author would probably consider research about the effects noise has on people to be .A.unimportantB.impossible.C.a waste of moneyD.essentialTEXT BMost of us are taught to pay attention to what is said—the words. Words do provide us with some information, but meanings are derived from so many other sources that it would hinder our effectiveness as a partner to a relationship to rely too heavily on words alone. Words are used to describe only a small part of the many ideas we associate with any given message. Sometimes we can gain insight into some of those associations if we listen for more than words. We don’t always say what we mean or mean what we say. Sometimes our words don’t mean anything except “ I’m letting off some steam. I don’t really want you to pay close attention to what I’m saying. Just pay attention to what I’m feeling.” Mostly we mean several things at once. A person wanting to purchas e a house says to the current owner, “This step has to be fixed before I’ll buy.” The owner says, “ It’s been like that for years.” Actually, the step hasn’t been like that for years, but the unspoken message is: “ I don’t want to fix it. We put up with it. Why can’t you?” The search for a more expansive view of meaning can be developed of examining a message in terms of who said it, when it occurred, the related conditions or situation, and how it was said. When a message occurs can also reveal associated meaning. Let us assume two couples do exactly the same amount of kissing and arguing. But one couple always kisses after an argument and the other couple always argues after a kiss. The ordering of the behaviors may mean a great deal more than the frequency of the behavior.A friend’s unusually docile behavior may only be understood by noting that it was preceded by situations that required an abnormal amount of assertiveness. Some responses may be directly linked to a developing pattern of responses and de fy logic. For example, a person who says “No!” to a serials of charges like “You’re dumb,” “You’re lazy,” and “You’re dishonest,” may also say “No!” and try to justify his or her response if the next statement is “And you’re good looking.”We would do well to listen for how messages are presented. The words, “If sure has been nice to have you over,” can be said with emphasis and excitement or ritualistically. The phrase can be said once or repeated several times. And the meanings we associate with the phrase will change accordingly. Sometimes if we say something infrequently it assumes more importance; sometimes the more we say something the less importance it assumes.6.Effective communication is rendered possible between two conversing partners, if .A.they use proper words to carry their ideas.B.they both speak truly of their own feelings.C.they try to understand each other’s ideas beyond words.D.they are capable of associating meaning with their words.7.“I’m letting off some steam” in paragraph 1 means .A.I’m just calling your attention.B.I’m just kidding.C.I’m just saying the opposite.D.I’m just giving off some sound.8.The house-owner’s example shows that he actually means .A.the step has been like that for years.B.he doesn’t think it necessary to fix the step.C.the condition of the step is only a minor fault.D.the cost involved in the fixing should be shared.9.Some responses and behaviors may appear very illogical, but are justifiable if .A.linked to an abnormal amount of assertiveness.B.seen as one’s habitual pattern of behavior.C.taken as part of an ordering sequence.D.expressed to a series of charges.10.The word “ritualistically” in the last paragraph equals s omething done .A.without true intention.B.light-heartedly.C.in a way of ceremony.D.with less emphasis.TEXT CWhich is safer-staying at home, traveling to work on public transport, or working in the office? Surprisingly, each of these carries the same risk, which is very low. However, what about flying compared to working in the chemical industry? Unfortunately, the former is 65 times riskier than the latter! In fact, the accident rate of workers in the chemical industry is less than that of almost any of human activity, and almost as safe as staying at home. The trouble with the chemical industry is that when things go wrong they often cause death to those living nearby. It is this which makes chemical accidents so newsworthy. Fortunately, they are extremely rare. The most famous ones happened at Texas City (1947),Flixborough (1974), Seveso (1976), Pemex (1984) and Bhopal (1984).Some of these are always in the minds of the people even though the loss of life was small. No one died at Seveso, and only 28 workers at Flixborough. The worst accident of all was Bhopal, where up to 3,000 were killed. The Texas City explosion of fertilizer killed 552. The Pemex fire at a storage plant for natural gas in the suburbs of Mexico City took 542 lives, just a month before the unfortunate event at Bhopal. Some experts have discussed these accidents and used each accident to illustrate a particular danger. Thus theTexas City explosion was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate(硝酸铵),which is safe unless stored in greatquantity. The Flixborough fireball was the fault of management, which took risks to keep production going during essential repairs. The Seveso accident shows what happens if the local authorities lack knowledge of the danger on their doorstep. When the poisonous gas drifted over the town, local leaders were incapable of taking effective action. The Pemex fire was made worse by an overloaded site in an overcrowded suburb. The fire set off a chain reaction os exploding storage tanks. Yet, by a miracle, the two largest tanks did not explode. Had these caught fire, then 3,000 strong rescue team and fire fighters would all have died.11.Which of the following statements is true?A.Working at the office is safer than staying at home.B.Traverlling to work on public transport is safer than working at the office.C.Staying at home is safer than working in the chemical industry.D.Working in the chemical industry is safer than traveling by air.12.Chemical accidents are usually important enough to be reported as news because .A.they are very rareB.they often cause loss of lifeC.they always occur in big citiesD.they arouse the interest of all the readers13.According to passage, the chemical accident that caused by the fault of management h appened at .A.Texas cityB.FlixboroughC.SevesoD.Mexico City14.From the passage we know that ammonium nitrate is a kind of .A.natural gas, which can easily catch fireB.fertilizer, which can't be stored in a great quantityC.poisonous substance, which can't be used in overcrowded areasD.fuel, which is stored in large tanks15.From the discussion among some experts we may coclude that .A.to avoid any accidents we should not repair the facilities in chemical industryB.the local authorities should not be concerned with the production of the chemical industryC.all these accidents could have been avoided or controlled if effective measure had been takenD.natural gas stored in very large tanks is always safeTEXT DWhat we know of prenatal development makes all this attempt made by a mother to mold the character of her unborn child by studying poetry, art, or mathematics during pregnancy seem utterly impossible. How could such extremely complex influences pass from the mother to the child? There is no connection between their nervous systems. Even the blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly. An emotional shock to the mother will affect her child, because it changes the activity of her glands and so the chemistry her blood. Any chemical change in the mother’s blood will affect the child for better or wo rse. But we can not see how a looking for mathematics or poetic genius can be dissolved in blood and produce a similar liking or genius in the child. In our discussion of instincts we saw that there was reason to believe that whatever we inherit must be of some very simple sort rather than any complicated or very definite kind of behavior. It is certain that no one inherits a knowledge of mathematics. It may be, however, that children inherit more or less of a rather general ability that we may call intelligence. If very intelligent children become deeply interested in mathematics, they will probably make a success of that study. As for musical ability, it may be that what is inherited is an especially sensitive ear, a peculiar structure of the hands or the vocal organs connections between nerves and muscles that make it comparatively easy to learn the movements a musician must execute, and particularly vigorous emotions. If these factors are all organized around music, the child may become a musician. The same factors, in other circumstance might be organized about some other center of interest. The rich emotional equipment might find expression in poetry. The capable fingers might develop skill in surgery. It is not the knowledge of music that is inherited, then nor even the love of it, but a certain bodily structure that makes it comparatively easy to acquire musical knowledge and skill. Whether that ability shall be directed toward music or some other undertaking may be decided entirely by forces in the environment in which a child grows up.16.Which of the following statements is not true?A.Some mothers try to influence their unborn children by studying art and other subjects during theirpregnancy.B.It is utterly impossible for us to learn anything about prenatal development.C.The blood vessels of mother and child do not join directly.D.There are no connection between mother’s nervous s ystems and her unborn child’s.17. A mother will affect her unborn baby on the condition that .A.she is emotionally shockedB.she has a good knowledge of inheritanceC.she takes part in all kind of activitiesD.she sticks to studying18.According to the passage, a child may inherit .A.everything from his motherB.a knowledge of mathematicsC.a rather general ability that we call intelligenceD.her mother’s musical ability19.If a child inherits something from his mother, such as an especially sensitive ear, a peculiar structure of thehands or of the vocal organs, he will .A.surely become musicianB.mostly become a poetC.possibly become a teacherD.become a musician on the condition that all these factors are organized around music20.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.听力原文:During most of human history, communication was limited by time and distance. In less than 200 years, however, revolutionary changes in communication have occurred. In the 19th century, the telegraph and telephone were invented. Radio, television and computers were developed in the 20th century. These inventions completely changed people’s lives around the world. Today all of these communication devices are being linked together, creating a worldwide “information”revolution. This new wave of technology is called “telecommunications”the use of electronic media (television, radio, telephones and computers) to communicate across distance and time. Telephones are now connected to home computers and television sets; radio stations are linked to home computers and home computers are tied to news publishing services. Much of this is possible because of new technology that is known as fiber opticscommunication lines that are made of glass fibers. Because of glass-fiber technology, large amounts of information may be sent at great speed over telephone and cable television lines. Today the world can be linked instantly by computers and satellites. All of our systems economic, social and political are already being affected by these tools of technology. In the not-too-distant future, everyone will be affected by these and further developments in telecommunications.12.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passage?A.Communications.B.Computers.C.Telecommunications.D.Glass-fiber Technology.正确答案:C13.Which is NOT mentioned as a way of telecommunications?A.Telephones are linked to home computers.B.Television sets are connected to home computers.C.Home computers are tied to radio stations.D.Home computers are connected to telegraph正确答案:D14.Why is it possible to send large amounts of information at great speed?A.The invention of glass-fiber technology.B.Economic links among nations.C.The popularity of home computers.D.The appearance of the cable television.正确答案:A听力原文:According to recent surveys, a large number of Americans favor increasing the present 55-mile-an-hour speed limit. The current speed limit was set in the early 1970’s when the US. faced its first crucial oil shortage. Sixty-five percent of the persons surveyed said that the law was out of date. They pointed to the relative safety of the American highway system and to younger people, rather than older adults. They are more likely to argue against retention of the legislation. The debate is particularly important for those who live in the western states. Many of the large cities in the western part of the country are separated by thirty or forty hours of long, empty, straight roads. People from this area argue that the examples of countries like Australia and Germany should demonstrate that higher speeds are still safe and that speed is disproportionately blamed for traffic problems. Most professional truck drivers favor a higher speed limit. They argue that they can get their goods to the marketplace faster if the speed limit is higher, and that is good for the economy. Since the successful implementation of the turbo-charged engine inmodern trucks, it is quite possible for trucks to reach speeds twice the legal limit which they are currently allowed to travel. In the end, economic issues may help make the final decision.15.Why was the speed limit set at 55 miles per hour in the first place?A.The older people wanted it.B.The voters decided on it.C.Speeds above 55 were not safe.D.The U.S. had a fuel crisis.正确答案:D16.Who is mostly likely to want a higher speed limit?A.Most Americans.B.All young Americans.C.All American Westerners.D.Professional truck drivers.正确答案:D17.What evidence do people from the West give to show that a higher speed limit is safe?A.The long empty roads between the cities.B.The modern turbo-charged engine.C.The current policies of Germany and Australia.D.The benefits for economy.正确答案:C听力原文:Many substances that come into contact with the surface of the eye can cause chemical bums, allergic reactions or inflammations, or can even be absorbed through the eye. But it is also an indispensable way of travel. The new A380The double-decker A380, the biggest airliner the world has seen, landed at Heathrow last month to test whether London's main airport could handle the new 550-seater, due to enter commercial service at the end of this year. It was a proud moment for Britain's Rolls-Royce, the makers of the aircraft's Trent 900 engines. Rolls-Royce says the four Trents on the A380 are as clean and efficient as any jet engine, and produce "as much power as 3,500 family cars". A simple calculation shows that the equivalent of more than six cars is needed to fly each passenger.Take the calculation further: flying a fully laden A380 is, in terms of energy, like a 14km (nine-mile) queue of traffic on the road below. And that is just one aircraft. In 20 years, Airbus reckons, 1,500 such planes will be in the air. By then, the total number of airliners is expected to have doubled, to 22,000. The huge airplane alone would be pumping out carbon dioxide (CO2) at the same rate as 5 million cars. That may not seem much compared with the 60 million vehicles that pour off assembly lines every year—or the 1 billion vehicles already on the world's roads. But whereas cars are used roughly for about an hour or so a day, jet airliners are on the move for at least 10 hours a day. And they burn tax-free, highoctane (1) 高能量的) fuel, which dumps hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2 into the most sensitive part of the atmosphere.Aviation is a relatively small source of the emissions blamed for global warming, but its share is growing the fastest. The evidence is strong. As a result, aviation is increasingly attracting the attention of environmentalists and politicians. Amid much controversy, CO2caps (最高限制) and carbon-trading could soon be used to help curb aircraft emissions.Frequent flyers, free ridersAirlines are accused of having a free ride in terms of air pollution because they pay no tax on the fuel they use for international flights. Even though today's aircraft are about 70% more efficient than those of 40 years ago, concerns over emissions have grown. Despite booming demand for air travel, many airlines are losing money. Now green campaigners want people to think twice before they fly. The opposing voice is particularly loud in Europe, where low-cost carriers are expanding fast on busy shorthaul (2) 短距离) routes. The European Parliament will vote in July on a proposal to limit aircraft emissions.America is deeply unhappy at the prospect of its airlines being affected. Sharon Pinkerton, a senior representative of the Federal Aviation Administration insisted, on a visit to Brussels last year, that American carriers should be exempted from the scheme. This sets the scene for another transatlantic aviation dispute, to add to the two bitter and long-running disputes over subsidies to Europe's Airbus and the liberalisation of air traffic between the two continents. The airlines are growing nervous. The big international carriers represented by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) would rather Europe waited for the deliberations of a United Nations body, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), which has set technical, legal and safety rules for more than 50 years. International aviation was excluded from the Kyoto protocol on global warming, but only on condition that, by theend of 2007, countries and airlines worked under the umbrella of ICAO to come up with a way of reducing emissions through a trading scheme.Soon after the end of the Second World War the member governments of ICAO agreed that airlines should be free of fuel taxes. Some say this was to outlaw unilateral taxes that could distort markets, but others reckon it was done to boost the fledgling airline industry emerging from the fighting. The corollary was that aviation, unlike motor traffic and other forms of transport, would pay in a transparent manner for the infrastructure and services it required-air-traffic management, landing charges, flyover rights and so on. That was supposed to take care of the external costs. But no one in those days thought much about the environment.Counting the costIt was not until 1999 that the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) attempted to reduce the effect of aviation on the environment. Transport as a whole was judged to be responsible for about a quarter of the world's CO2 discharges. That makes it one of the biggest sources, alongside power generation and households, as a source of the gas. Within transport, aviation accounts for about 13%. Its contribution to total man-made emissions worldwide is said to be around 3%.So why all the fuss about so little? One reason is that high-altitude emissions are probably disproportionately damaging to the environment. The nitrogen oxides from jet-engine exhausts lead to the formation of ozone, another greenhouse gas. Contrails (飞行云) are also suspected of enhancing the formation of cirrus clouds, which some scientists think adds to the global warming effect. The IPCC estimated that the overall impact on global warming of aircraft could be between two and four times that of their CO2 emissions alone, though there is no scientific consensus about the size of this multiplier.Naturally, the airlines choose to measure the greenhouse gases they produce in the way that casts them in the best light — a trick they deploy on safety statistics, too. For instance, over half of aircraft accidents occur around take-off and landing. So accidents per passenger-mile compare very favourably with other means of transport. But at least one study has shown that, if accidents are measured per journey instead, aircraft are the second-most dangerous way of travelling, after motorcycles.Likewise on greenhouse gases. IATA says an aircraft's fuel consumption is about the same as that of a family car, at 3.5 litres per 100 passenger-kilometres. So CO2 emissions are similar. But that is true only if the aircraft is full and the car's passenger seats are empty. And even then, a jumbo jet flying from London to Sydney would be like nearly 400 V olkswagen Polos each travelling just over 16,000km—the average distance a European drives in a year. In other words, although cars and aircraft discharge roughly the same amount of CO2for each passenger-kilometre, the aircraft travel an awful lot farther.Waiting to landCrowded airports compound the problem. Busy runways at places such as Heathrow mean aeroplanes have to circle wastefully. The possibility of being held up ensures that pilots carry extra fuel, thereby increasing the aircraft's weight and, hence, its consumption of fuel. Other small changes could further save fuel and avoid carbon emissions: aircraft could be towed everywhere on the ground by electric vehicles. Consumers, too, can take a stand by voluntarily offsetting the carbon emissions associated with flying by paying, for instance, to have trees planted. This week IATA said the net loss of the world's airlines in the past six years would amount to almost $44 billion. Carriers have been hit by terrorism, war, recession, the respiratory disease SAILS and soaring oil prices. There were hopes the industry could make a small profit in 2007, but having to pay for environmental costs could change that. Yet global warming is not something that airlines, or any other industry, can shake off for ever. Sooner or later, aviation will have to shoulder the burden it imposes on the planet.1. This passage is mainly about how the development of airline industry has affected the environment through its greenhouse gases emission.2. It is predicted that in 20 years, the huge airplanes alone would be pumping out carbon dioxide at the same rate as 5 million cars.3. The author compares the effect of airliners on the environment and that of the cars and concluded that the effect ofthe former is less because the number of airplanes is much smaller than that of the cars.4. In the past, aviation industry was the smallest source of greenhouse gases emission and thus did not attract people's attention.5. Many airlines are having less profit today although there are more demand for air travel.6. America is proposing an alternative plan to solve the problem of emission from airliners.7. The airlines are mom and more nervous, and they want the problem be considered by IATA, a United Nations body.8. ______as a whole was judged to be responsible for about a quarter of the world's carbon dioxide discharges.9. Although aviation accounts for only 3% of the total man-made emission, its______ are believed to be disproportionately damaging to the environment.10. During the past six years, airline industry has been hit by terrorism, war, ______which made the industry suffer a total loss of $44 billion.Part ⅢListening ComprehensionSection ADirections: At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing information. For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main points in you own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written. If you were supposed to be at my house at 6: 00 p.m. for dinner, but you came at 8: 00 p.m., we would (36) think you were quite impolite. However, if you come from Brazil, the idea of being (37) , or "on time", might mean coming two hours late. In fact, being "early" or "late" depends on your cultural (38) and no dictionary can give a clear (39) of "early" or "late" because these ideas reflect "social time" rather than real time.Even more (40) is how people from other cultures explain their lateness. American students might say they simply had not cared that they were late. In (41) , Brazilians would go out of their way to explain theirlateness in a number of ways—they were delayed by unforeseen or (42) problems, for example. Or they might (43) the reasons of being late to reasons that you might never think of.Some American students might feel very guilty and blame themselves, but (44) .Another surprising difference that researchers discovered was the way cultures view someone who is late. Americans tend to think negatively of people being late. (45) Or, at least, you will be viewed with some disfavor. But in Brazil, if you are late for an appointment, the chances are you will be admired. (46) . Part IV Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth)Section ADirections: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once. The American Revolution was not a revolution in the sense of a radical or total change. It was not a sudden and (47) overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, (48) both were already independent nations. Significant changes were ushered in, (49) they were not breathtaking. What happened was accelerated (50) rather than outright revolution. During the conflict, people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. Most of them were not (51) disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on.America's War of Independence heralded the birth of three modem nations. One was Canada, which (52) its first large influx of English-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the United States; (53) was Australia, which became a penal colony now that America was no longer (54) for prisoners and debtors; the third newcomer—the United States — based itself squarely on republican principles.Yet even the political overturn was not so (55) as one might suppose. In some states, notably Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule already existing. British officials, everywhere ousted, were (56) by a home-grown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and parliament.A) violent B) seriously C) revolutionary D) evolution E) another F) andG) replaced H) repelled I) other J) received K) but L) severeM) available N) when O) revolutionSection BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked [A]、[B]、[C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneA study of facts and figures on development demonstrates that China has made remarkable social progress in a range of significant areas in the last 45 years.China feeds and clothes 22 percent of the world's population with only seven percent of the world's farmland. The necessities of life food, clothing, goods for everyday use — are now within reach of the majority of the Chinese people. Nutrition has improved greatly for both urban and rural residents. The Chinese government has taken a series of measures to eliminate or reduce poverty, bringing down the number of poor in the rural population from 250 million in 1978 to only 80 million in 1994, even though this was a period in which China's population increased by over 100 million. The per capita living area in cities and towns increased from 3.6 square meters in 1978 to 7.5 square meters in 1993. In rural areas the per capita housing has reached 20.8 square meters.Educational developments have liberated millions of Chinese people from ignorance and illiteracy. In 1986 China instituted nine years of compulsory schooling, with the result that by 1993 school enrolment had reached 97.7percent. Today, illiteracy among young and middle-aged people has dropped to only seven percent. The state is taking measures to keep its labor force fully employed. In recent years the urban unemployment rate has remained between two and three percent.China has put strict controls on industrial pollution in an effort to improve the overall urban environment. Ecological methods of farming are being promoted and afforestation is being speeded up. In 1993 the country's forest coverage was 13.9 percent and 766 nature reserves covered a total of 661, 800 square kilometers.China is working toward the goal of health care for everyone by the year 2000. In 1993 there were two hospital beds for every 833 people and two doctors for every 1,266 people. By now the immunization of children has reached 85 percent, and increased efforts are being made to monitor and control AIDS and venereal diseases.57. What is an appropriate title for this passage?[A] Fast Economic Development in China. [B] Social Development in China.[C] The Current Chinese Society. [D] People's View on China's Reform.58. Which of the following statements is NOT correct?[A] Chinese people account for 22 percent of the world's total population.[B] The arable land in China constitutes seven percent of that of the world.[C] Most Chinese people now can easily buy the necessities of life.[D] Urban residents can eat nutritiously, but rural residents cannot.59. What is mentioned as a difficulty of poverty elimination efforts by the passage?[A] Slow economic development. [B] Vast area of land. [C] Huge population increase. [D] Natural disaster.60. Which of the following statements is NOT true?[A] Educational developments have set millions of Chinese people free.[B] After 1986, every child in China must receive an education of at least nine years.[C] Nowadays, only 7% of young and middle-aged people cannot read or write.[D] There is compulsory education for children now.61. Which of the following is mentioned as an example of achievements in health care?[A] Increasing budget and attention. [B] Preferential tax policy and incentives.[C] Decreasing mortality rate and medicine price. [D] Ratio of hospital beds to patient.Passage TwoI have certainly seen lots of changes in my lifetime! I look around my home and see "mod cons" that I could never have dreamed of 50 or 60 years ago. I spent the early part of childhood in a cottage without running water or electricity and yet these days, I feel paralyzed if there is a power cut for even just an hour or two! So, I have changed too. Things that I couldn't even imagine in the past now seem quite normal.Businessmen can travel from London to New York in three hours and lots of people exceed the seventy-mile-per-hour speed limit on motorways. A person of 75 is not old these days. A serious illness does not mean certain death because there have been so many advances in medical science. We no longer need to be afraid of contracting diseases like polio or smallpox. I can speak to my son in Australia from my own sitting room here in Manchester, watch athletes running a race on the other side of the world without moving from my own home and I can even do my shopping while I sit here in an armchair. I never need to worry about food going bad in the warm weather and, at the flick of a switch, I can have a hot meal in a couple of minutes. So, it seems, the quality of life has greatly improved since my own childhood.I'm not convinced, however, that people are happier today than they were 50 years ago. We are certainly materially better off than we were but most people still seem to be weighed down by problems. My daughter and her family are a good illustration. They have a spacious, comfortable home with every labor-saving device you can think of. There's a washing machine, a clothes dryer, a food processor, a vacuum cleaner and all sorts of other household items which are designed to save time but it seems to me that my daughter and her husband just spend all that "saved" time working! They never relax and are always complaining of being tired and "stressed".62. What is the passage mainly about?[A] How life has improved.
