You're excited and maybe a little bit nervous. What can you expect Read on for our advice.Prepare yourself for a new life at collegeEntering college is like starting a new phase of life where you have to learn to support yourself. You will have to adjust to your new surroundings; try to do everything by yourself and learn to stand on your own two feet. As you negotiate the ups and downs of student life; you will learn how to manage the situations that arise.Learn to enjoy the hardshipsWe all know college life is wildly different from middle school. It's the place where teenagers become adults and academia meets society. Ideally; your time at college will help you mature physically and mentally; equip you with knowledge and prepare you for your professional career. It's a challenging process; so it's not realistic to expect everything to always work in your favor. You won't win every prize and you won't be popular with all your classmates all the time. The set-backs and challenges – like failure; betrayal and unjust treatment – are just as important for your growth as the good times. Only once you have experienced these things will you know what society and life is like.Communicate with othersCollege is just like a small society; so you have to communicate with your peers to make the most of your time. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A; B; C and D.Passage oneIn this age of Internet chat; videogames and reality television; there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet; despite the competition; my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest; a competition she won last year.As a writer I know about winning contests; and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victori es. What if she doesn’t win the contest again That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface.A revelation启示came last week when I asked her; “Don’t you want to win again ”“No;” she replied; “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.”I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously自发地told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall; I offered suggestions for characters; conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided” by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it.Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade; I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting借用m y daughter’s experience. While stepping back was difficult for me; it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps; putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment; grow and find their own voices.6. What do we learn from the first paragraphA A lot of distractions compete for children’s time nowadays.B Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities.C Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time.D Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing.7. What did the author say about her own writing experienceA She was constantly under pressure of writing more.B Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers.C She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer.D Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations.8. Why did Rebecca want to enter this year’s writing contestA She had won a prize in the previous contest.B She wanted to share her stories with readers.C She was sure of winning with her mother’s help.D She believed she possessed real talent for writing.9. The author took great pains to refine her daughter’s stories becau se ________.A she wanted to help Rebecca realize her dreams of becoming a writerB she was afraid Rebecca’s imagination might run wild while writingC she did not want to disappoint Rebecca who needed her help so muchD she believed she had the knowledge and experience to offer guidance10. What’s the author’s advice for parentsA Children should be given every chance to voice their opinions.B Parents should keep an eye on the activities their kids engage in.C Children should be allowed freedom to grow through experience.D A writing career; though attractive; is not for every child to pursue.Passage twoThe reading passages in Lower English Course were designed to introduce a large number of points associated with vocabulary; grammar and construction that often cause difficulties to students. These have been retained within the structure of this edition together with the practice exercises which formed part of most chapters. With the introduction of a considerably modified examination however; a large part of the earlier book has been rewritten so as to ensure adequate preparation for all sections of the new syllabus大纲. The notes to each chapter have been condensed to essentials to allow additional material to be included together with guidance in pronunciation; special grammatical points and use of prepositions; related in each of these cases to the foregoing comprehension passage.New sections have been added to most chapters; consisting of multiple choice questions based on the comprehension passage; a number of questions of the type that will appear on the Use of English paper and finally considerable practice in spoken English; including conventional usage; conversations; situations to be dealt with orally and discussion topics. The Chapter on spoken English has been adapted to the new “Interview” and “play extract” reading passage with advice and examples included. Other sections deal with the new type of summary and with composition writing; though each of the proposed types of composition is presented separately as part of a chapter. The student undertaking this course should already have a good elementary knowledge ofEnglish. When classes have as many as ten weekly lessons most of the material can be dealt with in class; but students in groups which meet for not more than 4-5 hours weekly have to do a good deal of preparation at home with class guidance and checking. A key is available separately and the material is presented clearly enough to enable a student working alone to derive considerable benefit from it.11pared with the old edition; this new edition ____.Aadds some new sections to most chaptersBintroduces more difficulties to studentsCremains almost unchangedDhas considerably improved the balance between theory and practice12.According to author; this new edition has been adapted ____.Abecause a new syllabus had been introducedBso that the notes could be includedCbecause a number of multiple choice questions had to be dealt with orallyDand advice and examples have been condensed13.It can be inferred from the passage that the major component of the textbook is ___.Aadditional materialsBpractice exercisesCcomprehension passagesDwriting compositions14.One of the features of this textbook as mentioned in the last paragraph is that ____.Aits users may be beginners of the English languageBit can be used for different course arrangementsConly advanced learners can benefit from itDits learners must spend at least 10 hours on it per week15.The passage is most likely a part of ___.Aa scientific paperBa prefaceCan interviewDa news articlePassage threeConsumers are being confused and misled by the hodge-podge 大杂烩of environmental claims made by househol d products; according to a “green labeling” study published by Consumers International Friday .Among the report’s more outrageous 令人无法容忍的findings;a German fertilizer described itself as “ earthworm friendly”; a brand of flour said it was “non-polluting” and a British toilet paper claimed to be “environmentally friendlier”The study was written and researched by Britain’s National Consumer Council NCC for lobby group Consumer International. It was funded by the German and Dutch governments and the European Commission.“ While many good and useful claims are being made ; it is clear there is a long way to go in ensuring shoppers are adequately informed about the environmental impact of products they buy;”said Consumers International director Anna Fielder .The 10-country study surveyed product packaging in Britain. Western Europe; Scandinavia and the United States. It found that products sold in Germany and the United Kingdom made the most environmental claims on average. The report focused on claims made by specific products ; such as detergent 洗涤剂insect sprays and by some garden products . It did not test the claims; but compared them to labeling guidelines set by the International Standards Organization ISO in September; 1999.Researchers documented claims of environmental friendliness made by about 2;000 products and found many too vague or too misleading to meet ISO standards.“Many products had specially-designed labels to make them seem environmentally friendly; but in fact many of these symbols mean nothing;” said report researcher Philip Page.“Laundry detergents made the most number of claims with 158. Household cleaners were second with 145 separate claims; while paints were third on our list with 73. The high numbers show how very c onfusing it must be for consumers to sort the true from the misleading.” he said. The ISO labeling standards ban vague or misleading claims on product packaging; because terms such as “environmentally friendly” and “non-polluting” cannot be verified. “Wh at we are now pushing for is to have multinational corporations meet the standards set by the ISO.” said Page.16. According to the passage; the NCC found it outrageous that ______A all the products surveyed claim to meet ISO standardsB the claims made by products are often unclear or deceivingC consumers would believe many of the manufactures’ claimD few products actually prove to be environment friendly17. As indicated in this passage ; with so many good claims ; the consumers ___A are becoming more cautious about the products they are going to buyB are still not willing to pay more for products with green labelingC are becoming more aware of the effects different products have on the environmentD still do not know the exact impact of different products on the environment18. What is one of the consequences caused by the many claims of household productsA They are likely to lead to serious environmental problemsB Consumers find it difficult to tell the true from the falseC They could arouse widespread anger among consumerD Consumers will be tempted to buy products they don’t need20. Upon this foundation you can build a long-term financial plan, because it guarantees lifetime protection for your family or business.Whole life insurance provides basic insurance protection, plus Mortgage (抵押)protection, Estate preservation, Retirement funding, Charitable giving, Business needs...A life insurance agent will help you determine an amount of insurance needed toprotect your family or business in the event of your death.Generally after the first year, the policy begins to increase cash value. You may also choose to leave it in the policy and allow it to grow.A whole life policy can earn dividends (红利). Dividends are determined by thecompany’s board of directors each year and are not guaranteed. When a dividend is payable, you may choose to take it in cash, use it to buy more insurance or to pay or reduce your premiums. When you die, the company will pay your beneficiaries(受益人)the death benefit, usually the face amount of the policy plus any dividend. If you are thinking of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of companion(同伴)you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can provide. Specialists’ advice is useful to help you choose the most suitable kind of dog. But in part the decision depends on common sense, which is not the most important factor. Different dogs were originally developed to perform specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for example, you should choose the one that has the right size and characteristics. You must also be ready to devote a great deal of time to training the dog when it is young and give it the exercise it needs through out its life, unless you live in the countryside and can let it run freely.Dogs are demanding(苛求的)pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfactory with their place where it is safe, but a dog is loyal(忠诚)to its master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection. The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its love from its mother to its master. If baby dogs have not established a relationship with the human being until they are over three months old, their strong relationship will always be with dogs. They are likely to be shy when they are brought out into the world to become good pets.6. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A. You can get help from the specialists.B. It is common sense that is the most important when choosing a dog.C. You should decide what kind of dog you want.D. Size and characteristics of the dogs should be considered too.7. It demands more food and space.C. It needs more love and care.D. It must be looked after carefully.9. Why is it advised to buy a baby dog when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old?A. It’s easier to buy a baby dog under three months old.B. They are less likely to be shy with human beings.C. They are less likely to run away.D. It’s easier for them to form a relationship with their masters.10. The underlined word “affection” (Para 2) means _____ .A. loveB. effectC. tieD. relationshipPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.Bombay wasn’t the ideal place to get sick —not when my doctor, family and friends were half a world away. I was alone, quite ill and had to delay my flight home. Luckily, when booking my ticket months before, I had bought travel insurance. So my illness didn’t cost me a cent. It’s actually pretty simple. A lot of unforeseen things can happen to you when you’re traveling. Make sure you’re prepared for all of them.A good health insurance(保险)policy will get you proper medical attention anywhere in the world outside your home province —at the insurance company’sexpense. The company will send you home if it is considered medically necessary and, if you’re si ck enough, it will send a nurse to accompany you. If you end up in a hospital and a doctor recommends that a family member come to your bedside, the insurance company will pay for it. You may even get pocket money to make your hospital stay more comfortable. When I was sick in Bombay, I called the insurance company. It paid for a doctor (who came to my hotel room), all my medication, an extra night in the hotel and all my meals.Picture it: the day before your big trip to Vancouver, you wake up with appendicitis (阑尾炎). You have no choice —you have to cancel your trip. Your ticket, like most, is non-refundable and you can’t make any changes. You’re about to lose all the money you put out for the ticket —unless you bought cancellation insurance beforehand. Most travel plans include some form of non-refundable(不能退款) element: your deposit(押金), your flights, your cruise, your stay at the all-inclusive resort. That non-refundable portion is what you’ll lose if you have to cancel your trip in the event that you get sick and you don’t have cancellation insurance.11. What happened to the author when he was in Bombay?A. He fell ill and couldn’t go home as scheduled.B. He didn’t buy travel insurance.C. Read the passage carefully and then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. On Thanksgiving Day, a teacher asked her class of first-graders to draw a picture of something they were thankful for. She thought that these children from poor families actually had little to be thankful for. And she found most of them drawing pictures of flowers or tables with food. The teacher was very surprised to see the picture Douglas handed in. It’s a hand, a simple hand. But whose hand? The class were very interested in the strange picture. “I think it must be the hand of God that brings us food,” said one child. “A farmer,” said another, “because he grows beautiful flowers.”Finally when the others were at work, the teacher went over Douglas’desk and asked whose hand it was. “It’s your hand, teacher,” he said quietly and shyly. She remembered that she had often taken Douglas, a dirty lonely child, by the hand while having a class break. She often did that with children. But it meant so much to Douglas. Perhaps this is everyone’s thanksgiving, not for the material things we get, but for the chance, in whatever small way, to give to others.16. When did the story happen?17. What did the teacher ask students to do?18. What did Douglas draw?19. Did all the students have the same opinion about Douglas’ picture?20. 湖州师范学院2011届学位英语考试试卷八Part I Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: There are 4 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D).Passage OneParents have to do much less for their children today than they used to, and home has become much less of a workshop. Clothes can be bought ready made, washing can go to the laundry, food can be bought cooked, canned or preserved, bread is baked and delivered by the baker, milk arrives on the doorstep, meals can be had at the restaurant, the work‘s canteen (自助食堂), and the school dining-room.It is unusual now for father to pursue his trade or other employment at home, and his children rarely, if ever, see him at his place of work. Boys are therefore seldom trained to follow their father‘s profession, and in many towns they have a fairly w ide choice of employment and so do girls. The young wage-earner often earns good money, and soon acquires a feeling of economic independence. In textile (纺织) areas it has long been a rule for mothers to go out to work, and this practice has become so widespread that the working mother is now a not unusual factor in a child‘s home life, and the number of married women in employment has more than doubled in the last twenty-five years. With mother earning and his older children drawing decent(相当好的) wages, father is seldom the dominant figure that he still was at the beginning of the century. When mother works, economic advantages increase, but children lose something of great value if mother‘s employment prevents her from being home to greet them when they return from sch ool.1. What does the first paragraph tell us?A. People did much more work for others than today.B. There are more school dining-rooms now than in the past.C. Home used to be more like a workshop than today.D. There are more ready made clothes available in the market.2. What is the main reason that children DO NOT do the same job as their father does?A. Because they have a lot of jobs to choose from.B. Because they do not know much about their father's job.C. Because their father‘s job is not exciting enough.D. Because their father does not like them to pursue his trade.3. What does the writer like to see about a working mother?A. She earns more money than her husband.B. She goes back home earlier than her children do.C. She plays a more important role in the family.D. She works near home to take care of her children.4. They signed an agreement to carry out an initial study on the project and outlined the city‘s intention to import German technology. The project, once completed and acceptable to the two business parties, will be a double-win: the German company can benefit from exporting its technology and the city receiving German technology can improve its traffic and further strengthen its position as an international city.Called Maglev for short, the system under discussion makes use of a high-speed train levitated above a guideway (高速车辆的导路) and driven by magnetic fields. The project has been in the talking stage for several months.Hans Ueberschaer, the German government official, visited the city together with Harmut Heine, representative of Thyssen Krupp. They had an initial discussion with the mayor there about the project. The talks were believed to be constructive and paved the way for the future talks in Berlin, where an agreement was reached.6. How much time will the high-speed train save travelers at most?A. A certain percentage may beadded to the bill at a hotel or restaurant ―for the service‖. In other places the customer may be expected to give a tip, or a small amount of money, as a sign of appreciation whenever services are performed. In the United States there is no standard practice in regard to tipping. The custom is more common in a large city than in a small town. A native American may often be in doubt about when and how much to tip when he is in a city that is strange to him. In general, however, a tip is expected by the porter who carries your baggage, by taxi drivers (except, perhaps, in a small town), and by those who serve you in hotels and restaurants. When you pick up your incoming baggage at an airport, you may tip the man who takes it to the taxi or airport bus. He usually expects one dollar a bag for his service. In some cities the taxi that takes you to your hotel may have one meter (计价器) that shows the cost of the trip and another that shows a fixed charge, usually about 50 cents, for ―extra‖. In some cities the taxi driver may expect a tip in addition to the ―extra‖, especially if he carries your suitcase. If no ―extra‖ is charged, a tip is usually given. Hotels generally do not make a service charge, though there are places where one is added. It is customary (惯常的), however, to give something to the porter who carries your suitcases and shows you to your room. In case of doubt, one dollar for each bag he carries is satisfactory. In a restaurant you generally leave about 15 percent of the bill in small change on that table as a tip for the person who has served you. A service charge is generally not included in the bill except in some of the larger, more expensive places. If the order is small – a cup of coffee at a lunch counter, or something of the sort – a tip is not usually expected.11. Whom do customers usually have to tip?A. A bus driver.B. A hotel manager.C. An airport porter.D. A restaurant cook.12. When does a native American get puzzled about tipping?A. When he stays in a big hotel.B. When he goes to a small town.C. When he travels to a big city.D. Every term students are given the opportunity to evaluate their teachers. They are supposed to judge their teachers‘ lectures, interests in students‘ problems, methods of exercise, and general ability to conduct a class. Then, when the teacher has left the classroom, they must write their evaluation o the forms provided. They are not supposed to exchange views or discuss their responses. After everyone has completed the forms, one student collects and puts them in envelopes. It is very difficult to evaluate another person‘s performance fairly. For example, Santarecently wrote irresponsible remarks about her teacher because she was failing the course. Her friend Sam wrote a marvelous description of the same teacher because he was receiving an A in the course. Both Santa and Sam were not fairly evaluating the teacher. They were influence by the grades they were earning and were unfair in their judgments.Another irresponsible form of evaluation occurred when James rated his teacher excellent because the teacher is ―easy‖. He gives few tests and only assigns (分配) one paper during the entire term. His lectures are often filled with jokes and endless stories about his family. On the other hand, James rated Professor Jones poor because he assigns homework daily, gives pretest previews and post-test reviews, and packs his lectures with information.Santa, Sam, and James have not thought about their teachers‘ teaching abilities. They have written unfair evaluations and have not given thought to their evaluations. They have not made fair judgments, but instead have been influenced by their own personality and have equated (使等同) light work with excellence in teaching.16. Each passage isfollowed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D) and choose the best one.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Children in the United States are exposed to many influences other than that of their families. Television is the most significant of these influences, because the habit of watching television usually begins before children start attending school.Parents are concerned about the lack of quality in television programs for children. The degree of violence in many of these shows also worries them. Studies indicate that, when children are exposed to violence, they may become aggressive or insecure. Parents are also concerned about the commercials that their children see on television. Many parents would like to see fewer commercials during programs for children. And some parents feel that these shows should not have any commercials at all because young minds are not mature enough to deal with the claims made by advertisers.Educational television has no commercials and has programs for children that many parents approve of. The most famous of these is Sesame Street, which tries to give preschool children a head start in learning the alphabet (字母) and numbers. It also flies to teach children useful things about the world in which they live.Even though most parents and educators give Sesame Street and shows like it high marks for quality, some critics argue that all television, whether educational or not, is harmful to children. These critics feel that the habit of watching hours of television every day turns children into bored and passive consumers of their world rather than encouraging them to become active explorers of it.a1. Apart from family, which of the following is regarded as the most significant influence on children in the US?A. televisionB. radioC. computer gamesD. online shoppingb2. Television’s Influence on ChildrenD. More Education TelevisionPassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passageUsing too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(短缺). Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States, a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number. You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.c6. Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?A. Using river water.B. Throwing batteries away.C. Paving parking lots.D. Throwing rubbish into lakes.b7. What can be inferred from the text?A. All water shortages are due to human behavior.B. The government does help pay for some medical care for people who are on low incomes and for old people, but most people buy insurance to help pay for medical care. The problems of those who cannot afford insurance are an important political subject. In Britain, when people are ill, they usually go to a family doctor first. However, people in America sometimes go straight to an expert without seeing their family doctor first. Children are usually taken to a doctor who is an expert in the treatment of children. A healthy body is a kind of priceless treasure. One can do nothing without it.Secondly, we should pay essential attention to our moral character. We should be always willing to help those in trouble without any complaints. Moreover, we should care more about the people around us.Thirdly, cooperation and communication also play an important role in being a good youth. No one can live alone without any friends. And nobody can work out every problem without help of partners. So the youth should and must learn how to live and work well with others, including those people you don't like to cooperate or communicate with. The last but not the least, patriotism, meaning a love of one's country, is the one we should never forget. People always misunderstand the word “patriots” by thinking it only refers to those fighters who fight for their country.
