More than 3,000 students took exams for it, but only a few was chosen and I was one of them. Therefore, my parents are not happy about it. They are strong against me going there. They say it is too far away that they will not see me for a whole year and they are afraid of I will feel homesick. They can't imagine so young a girl like me live alone. They advise me to choose a university near my home instead. Then I would be able to continue living with them. For many of us, learning a language is a terrifying experience, just as opening a new set of books and CDs.Babbel is a comprehensive online learning system that allows the user to combine learning with his or her everyday life. Launched in 2007 in Berlin, it's created and maintained by a team of 300 employees from 28 nations, including linguists (语言学家), language teachers, native speakers, and authors. The 14 language courses on offer (including French, Spanish, Polish, German, Swedish and English) are designed to be used on the go, anywhere andat any time, thanks to Babbel's multi-platform mobile apps. These courses are free to download and contain 2,000—3,000 vocabulary words per language, pronounced by native speakers and accompanied by relevant images. This native-speaker approach, says Markus Witte, CEO and founder of Babbel, is key to the compa ny's success. “The courses are designed by experienced language teachers and linguists,” he explains. “Their knowledge about learning processes and language pairings is crucial when designing lessons. We offer 14 learning languages and it makes a huge difference whether a Portuguese or an English native learns Spanish.”One of the real joys is being able to set your own pace and learn what you want. Simply choose the language you want and start learning it right away with integrated (综合的) speech recognition.Registration of Babbel is completely free, as Babbel provides advanced lessons in every language, so you can start making progress immediately. If you choose to sign up, you are offered monthly, three-monthly, six-monthly or yearly payment plans and this gives you immediate access to your chosen language on www. babbel. com as well as via the mobile apps for Android or iOS.The lessons are quick, bite-sized and entertaining. 50% of Babbel users learn with apps. Witte says, “This mobile language learning supports Babbel's idea of easy learning. The touch display allows for much faster repeat of vocabulary, and users can check their pronunciation or record a speaking role in a dialogue, which helps to remove the fear of talking in an unfa miliar language.”1.What do many people think of learning a language?A. But a recent report has found that people under 35 are now demanding food that's fresh and healthful—as well as fast.Th at's good news for people like Charley Wang, cofounder of community food startup Josephine. Customers can go to Josephine's website, choose from a list of homecooked options, pay online and pick up dinner within minutes of placing their order.“So it's convenient,” says Renee McGhee, 60, who has sold her homemade comfort food on Josephine.“It's like, here's a business in your hand. Run with it!”The company takes 10 percent of cooks' income in exchange for access to the online ordering platform, community forum and marketing materials. Most of the cooks on Josephine, like McGhee, operate out of their home kitchens. But the company's most popular meals come from an unexpected place: a middle school.Willard Middle School in Berkeley, Calif., is in its second year of partnering Josephine to make and sell hundreds of meals on one designated(指定的) day each month—with some adult in charge.Josephine gets the kind of community credibility(可信性) consumers want, while the school gets a cool learning opportunity and a muchneeded source of ongoing funding. The partnership has also taught Willard students a lot about the food business. However, last month, the city of Berkeley's Environmental Health Division sent several Josephine cooks—including McGhee—orders to stop selling meals from their homes without a permit.“The issue really is about food safety and being able to inspect how food is prepared,” said Matthai Chakko, a spokesman for the city of Berkeley.Luckily, the kids at Willard Middle School have access to commercialgrade kitchens that have the necessary permits. In addition to lower prices, supermarkets also offer shoppers added convenience and much quicker service. In the old days, grocery shopping was quite a bit troublesome. Consumersized p ackages did not exist, so a clerk had to measure out the exact amount you needed for everything you bought. This system cost much labor and therefore was rather expensive. On top of that, the entire experience was extremely timeconsuming as, much like bu ying meat at a butcher shop, the number of shoppers that a store could serve at the same time was limited by the size of its staff. The high labor costs and poor efficiency (效率) were quite a problem for both the industry and its public. The supermarket is a large departmentalized retail store, offering “one-stop shop” convenience with housewares, magazines, beauty products, and much more in addition to the food items sold by traditional stores. Need soapto go with your newspaper and bread? The supermarket saves your time by providing all three items under one roof. Along with added convenience comes added efficiency.Shoppers can now fetch what they want from shelves instead of waiting for service. This in turn reduces the need for additional staff, helping owners to cut costs greatly and to pass the savings back to the consumer. In fact, supermarkets pass so much of the savings back that their margins are razor-thin—only 1 to 3 percent—so to make a profit, they must rely on extremely high turnover rates and keeping operating expenses low, for example, by not offering delivery for one. The result is a quick and painless shopping experience with very reasonable prices.8.Which of the following is listed as a disadvantage of traditional grocery stores?A. Fewer staff members.B. Less shopping time.C. Smaller trading profits.D. Higher operating costs.9.The underlined word “margins” means________.A. savingsB. pricesC. profitsD. expenses10.Supermarkets don't offer delivery for one because ________.A. they want to keep costs downB. it isn't a good way to attract consumersC. there is no demand for such serviceD. it's the major cause of low efficiency11.The passage mainly aims to ________.A. introduce the origin of the supermarketB. discuss the disadvantages of traditional grocery storesC. explain why the general public hate grocery shoppingD. outline the advantages of supermarkets over traditional groceriesD(2016·沈阳三测)Along with its neighbors, Sweden features near the top of most sex-equality rankings. The World Economic Forum rates it as having one of the narrowest sex gaps in the world. Sweden is not only a good place for a woman, but it appears to be one for new dads. Close to ninety percent of Swedish fathers take paternity leave(陪产假). Last year some 340,000 dads took a total of 12 million days' leave, that is, approximately seven weeks each. Women take even more leave days to spend time with their children, but the gap is shrinking. Why do Swedish dads take so much time off work to raise their children?Forty years ago Sweden became the first country in the world to introduce a paid parental-leave allowance. Benefits consisted of ninety percent of wages for 180 days per child, and parents were free to share the days between them in whatever way they pleased. But the policy was hardly a hit with dads: in the policy's first year men took only 0.5% of all paid parental leave.Today they take a quarter of it. One reason is that the policy has become more generous, with the number of paid leave days for the first child increasing from 180 to 480. In 1995 the first so-called “daddy month” was introduced. Under this reform, families in which each parent took at least one month of leave received an additional month to add to their total allowance. The policy was expanded in 2002 so that if the mother and father each took at least two months' leave, the family would get two extra months. Some politicians now want to go further, advocating that the present system of shared leave be turned into one of personal rights, under which mothers should be allowed to take only half of the family's allowance, with the rest reserved for fathers.Since Swedish men started to take more responsibility for child upbringing, women have seen both their incomes and levels of self-reported happiness increase. Paying dads to change nappies(尿布) and hang out at playgrounds seems to benefit the whole family.12.What can be a suitable title for the passage?A. Swedish Sex EqualityB. Fathers can have longer paternity leave.B. Paternity leave decreases fathers' incomes.C. Fathers take more responsibility than mothers.D. Organizers of an exhibit in New York City think so.Peter Souleo Wright organized “The Button Show” at Rush Arts Gallery in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Eleven artists used the small, ordinary objects to create sculptures, portraits and wearable art. Some of the works are political, some are personal and others are just fun.Wright said each artist reimagines and repurposes the buttons to make art. “What I tried to do with this show,” he said,“was to look at artists who were promoting that level of craft. ”He said he wanted the button art to be comparable to a painting “because of the amount of detail and precision in the work”.Artist Beau McCall produced “A Harlem Hangover”. It looks like a wine bottle that fell over on a table. A stream of connected red buttons hang over the side, like wineflowing down. Similar red buttons form a small pool on the floor.McCall layers buttons of different shapes and sizes to create the bottle. The stitching that holds them together is also part of the artistic design. For San Franciscobased artist Lisa Kokin, buttons are highly personal. After her father died in 2001, she created a portrait of him using only buttons. That memorial to her father led to other button portraits, including those of activists Rosa Parks and Cesar Chavez.Others use buttons for details. Artist Amalia Amaki of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, placed them on and around old photographs. Los Angeles artist Camilla Taylor attached buttons to three large sculptures that look like headless animals with long, narrow legs.“The Button Show” ends at March 12. The Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation paid for the exhibition. The foundation was created in 1995 by the Simmons brothers: artist Danny, hiphop producer Russell and rapper . This trip was probably about 20 years ago so it was before the time of things like portable video games and being able to watch movies in the back seat.So to pass the many hours of travel my brother and I had to entertain ourselves and each other. My mum would set the back seat up so that it was our own little playroom. She would pack everything up so that we had a big level area to play in. We would play cards and board games. When it got to the point where we_were_at_each_other's_throats we would be sent back to our own side of the seat and would be forced to either nap or read by ourselves until we could be friendly to each other again. I can remember us playing for quite some time when we turned the back seat into a spaceship and traveled around the earth.Another time we turned it into a kitchen and had a bake-off (食物烘烤赛). But the thing that I remember the most and that gave us many hours of enjoyment was using each other's faces as silly Plasticine (普莱斯蒂辛橡皮泥) and making funny faces. We would see how far we could stretch each other's mouths open, see how thin we could make the other's eye by pulling on it. We would keep going until one of us begged for mercy because we had to give our faces a rest.So while I can remember us having a great time on the beach, laughing a lot trying to put the tent up in the rain, what I remember the most of that trip and what always makes me smile the most is remembering the pain that our faces would be in after the trip.10. I have hated getting up early all my life. The moment the alarm goes off in the morning, I feel sick. Nights, though, are different; I'll happily stay up and I'll do anything to escape an early start. This makes me an owl, but I know many larks (云雀)who insist that dawn is the best part of the day. While I go to work sleepy they have been up for hours and even seem cheerful about it. But it is wrong to say that society is exactly divided into larks and owls.Surveys that explore what time of day people prefer to do activities show that only 20% of adults are true larks or owls. That leaves 80% of us—half of which lean towards one direction or the other, the other half are neither.Schools and work often start very early, and there's a sense of love for getting up early while owls are simply slovenly. But no one suggests that larks are lazy for having an early night while owls are working.Fortunately science is on my side. I'm not sleeping my life away or missing the best part of the day. It investigates the association between the so-called reproductive factors—such as having children and breastfeeding—and a woman's risk of death.Researchers analyzed data from 322,972 women across 10 countries, including the UK, France, Germany and Sweden, with anaverage age of 50.Each woman was followed for an average of years. During this period, there were 14,383 deaths overall, which included 5,938 deaths from cancer and 2,404 deaths from circulatory system diseases, according to the study. The team compared reproductive factors with the risk of death from several common conditions, such as breast cancer, strokes and heart diseases. The researchers found that women who had given birth had a 20 percent reduced risk of death than those who had not. It was also found that there was a reduced risk of death (8 percent) in women who had breastfed compared to those who had not.The risk of death from cancer was lower in those who had given birth compared to those who had not. Within this group, the risk was reduced even further in women that gave birth to two or three children in comparison to those who had only one child.“Hormonal mechanisms may explain the lower risk of death that we observed with breastfeeding, and having given birth, as these factors are associated with changes in hormone levels,”said Dr Melissa Merritt from ICL, who led the study.11. While there, the 3-year-old also had the chance to hang out with Cox, who showed the girl all the different things she can do without arms, RE's mother Karlyn Pranke told The Huffington Post.RE's time with Cox made a lasting impression on the child and their moments together were summed up in one powerful snapshot of the two hugging.“That picture clearly showed that you don't need arms to embrace someone,” Cox told ABC News. “It was special that we could feel the same, mutual feeling.”On top of getting a hug from Cox, RE also showed the motivational speaker how she writes with her feet. Just ask Dana Richardson, who is a professional mermaid in Hawaii!“As a child, I always felt very connected to the ocean and played mermaids in the water,” says Dana. “My love of the ocean took me to different types of work such as a lifeguard, swim instructor, boat crew member, underwater photographer, boat captain, and surfer. I just decided to take it to the next level and grow a tail!”Dana doesn't mean literally(照字面地). In 2008 she began making mermaid tails from materials including shiny fabric(织物) that she wears while freediving in th e waters around Kona, Hawaii. Freediving means diving without any protective equipment. It requires you to told your breath while swimming deep underwater. As she dives in, Dana not only looks like a mermaid; she experiences what it is like to swim like one too.The waters around Dana's home in Kona are filled with wildlife, including dolphins and whales. Kona is by a sheltered sea where the waters are calm for swimming. For ten years Dana has been swimming with the creatures of Kona. Some of them have even learned to recognize her.Dana knows how to swim with sea life because she is a trained marine(海洋的) naturalist. She understands the behavior of sea life and knows how to safely interact with it. Every morning when she swims with sea life she gets to experience her other “home”.“The ocean beneath the depths really is another world. Watching how the world works so gracefully in that circle of life underwater is a beautiful thing.”For Dana Richardson being a mermaid just makes sense. “I've always felt mor e comfortable underwater than on land,”she says.Would you like to follow your dream, even if it seems impossible? Dana reminds everyone.“One person can truly make a difference. By following your heart and offering the world your unique gifts, you will inspire others to do so. He comes home in summer and over Christmas and I visit him there at least twice a year. So far, so good. But there was news of terrorist attacks in Brussels—108 miles from Amsterdam.Upon hearing of the attack, I immediately messaged my son. Although he was alarmed—and has commented that the attacks were indeed too close for comfort—he's not going anywhere. He'll continue living his life and attending classes. My husband and I raised our three kids in London, and lived there for seven years before moving to the United States in 2000. I've long been a proponent of kids studying abroad, and even wrote an article a few months back about the advantages of getting a degree overseas. At the time, I stated that the advantages to earning a degree abroad are many, but one of the main ones is the money saved by students and families. Many programs in Europe offer bachelor's degrees after only three years, and charge much less than U. S. institutions. But on this particular day, I'm not sure I can recommend going abroad with the same enthusiasm I might have only yesterday. I spoke with Allan Goodman, president of the Institute of International Education, last year, and I remember him telling me that students from other countries consistently ask him whether it's safe for them to study in the United States. And of course, attacks can happen anywhere—in Boston, San Bernardino, Chattanooga. The list goes on and on.Even so, you'll have to forgive me if I hold my breath until the day in June when my oldest steps off the plane in Newark Liberty International Airport, safely home for the summer.5.After the attack, the author's son probably felt ________.A. doubtful whether he should continue studying abroadB. frightened because the attack was not far from himC. disappointed that his father only messaged himD. nervous about going out and attending classes6.The underlined word “proponent” in Paragraph 3 means someone who ________.A. permits somethingB. promises somethingC. supports somethingD. sponsors something7.According to the author, what is one of the main advantages of studying aborad?A. He will make a list of dangerous places.C. He will worry about his son until summer.D. He will go to the airport to pick up his son.Ⅱ.七选五A situation comedy or sitcom is a comedic performance which focuses on creating humorous situations which the characters must solve. But I need music to run. Otherwise all I hear is the sound of my own breathing. So I've found a compromise: I run with only one earphone in. The music sounds off. It's an imperfect solution. An updated pair of headphones, called AfterShokz, aim to do better. AfterShokz bills itself as using bone conducting technology to conduct music from the front of the ear, delivering sound through your cheekbone and inner ear. This keeps your eardrum(鼓膜) free to hear everything else.“Earbuds(耳塞式耳机) are typically designed to block out all sound, which is fine when you're inside. But when you're outside, you need all your senses. It would be like sending you out cycling with a blindfold on,” says Rod Annet, managing director of AfterShokz. Here's where AfterShokz comes in. The headphones hook over the back of your head with the main “bud” resting high up against your cheek. This keeps your ear fre e to delight in other sounds. So do they work? In a word, yes. During a 45minute jog, they didn't bounce or shift. I heard far more of my environment than I normally do: a nearby bike there;a runner passing me again to my left; and so forth. What about t he downsides? If you're a huge fan of highquality sound, you might find the headphones a bit tinny. One friend expressed concerns about missing the ability to get lost in the music as you might be distracted by other noises, although I personally didn't find that an issue.Yet those are all minor details. For me, probably the biggest problem is the price. Ranging between £49.96 to £83.29, AfterShokz headphones aren't exactly cheap. With all that considered, would I recommend them? Yes, Aftershokz headphones are quite useful. While out jogging, they were light, painless, and easy to use. They made me feel safer.4.What is special about AfterShokz headphones?A. They are a good choice for inside use.B. They allow users to hear other sounds.C. They can make music sound more beautiful.D. They can deliver sound through your eardrum.5.What does the author's friend think of AfterShokz headphones?A. They prevent users getting lost.B. They deliver highquality sound.C. They often move while users are running.D. They fail to allow users to enjoy the music.6.The author thinks AfterShokz headphones ________.A. are too expensiveB. seem quite uselessC. make users feel painD. are too complex to use7.What is the main purpose of the text?A. His portrait of I ceT, the wellknown black reality TV star, draws from a nineteenthcentury painting of Napoleon (the ruler of France from 1804 to 1815). His attractive picture of AfricanAmerican singer Michael Jackson draws on the influence of Peter Paul Rubens (15771640, one of the greatest European painters). Wiley's paintings make his audience see famous people in new ways.In these paintings, Wiley uses very traditional techniques. Inspired by the Dutch masters, Wiley runs a painting workshop: the ideas are his own, but the artisan assistants in his workshop aid in the completion of the paintings. This cooperative process allows for Wiley's vast production and allows him to critically examine the quality of the work. With the help of his assistants, Wiley makes each painting a classical work from start to finish. This attention to detail and process made Wiley an artworld celebrity(名人) in his 20s.However, Wiley's focus is not only on celebrities. He is just as interested in “average” people. Some of his most famous works show various, common men Wiley has seen on the streets of Harlem (an area of New York City, where many AfricanAmerican people live). In his more recent work, Wiley brings his classical style to the common people of Israel and the West Indies. To honor ordinary people from all over the world, Wiley paints his people in the types of poses(姿势) and backgrounds usually reserved for royalty. He shows that even those to whom historypays no attention can have their own great dignity.Wiley's works can be seen in galleries all over the world because the everyday appearance of those he draws has an almost universal appeal. Wiley may draw on the work of many earlier artists, but his unique contribution is to show that art need not be limited to those who belong to the highest social class.8.How does the author support the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?A. By telling a story.B. By giving examples.C. By analyzing causes.D. By making a comparison.9.Why is Wiley able to create a lot of paintings?A. He i s a hardworking artist.B. It was largely unexplored by white settlers until the beginning of the nineteenth century. There wasn't enough land in the East, so many white people who wished to farm went West in search of a new life.Largescale(大规模) migration began in 1843. By 1848, over 14,000 settlers had followed. Much of the land they crossed consisted of mountains, deserts, and huge, treeless plains. Travellers normally began their journey in late April or early May. Any delay(耽搁) meant that fierce snowstorms would be experienced in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Migrants suffered from disease, violent dust storms, and so on. One in 25 of the migrants failed to make it to their destination. When white people first explored the American West, they often traded with Native Americans, and sometimes fur traders married and became members of Indian society. The travellers gave Native Americans blankets and mirrors in exchange for food. They also sold them guns and bullets. Then in 1849, thousands of men of many different nationalities went to California, and later to Colorado and Nevada, to search for gold. With the rush came the development of mining camps and the growth of industries, towns, shops, road systems, and railroads. All of this on hunting grounds. Native Americans did little farming and mining. They were hunters. Unavoidably, conflict occurred. The whites took over more and more of the Indian homelands, until tensions finally exploded into war in the 1860s. Hostilities continued for over twenty years, and many Native Americans were killed. The spirit of the Native Americans had finally been broken. They were persuaded to live in reservations, where they were encouraged to adopt an American way of life.12.Why did white settlers head West?A.They wanted to do business with Native Americans.B. They believed they could find a large area to farm.C. They wanted to expand the land area of America.D. They believed they could find much gold there.13.What's Paragraph 2 mainly about?A.
