Ⅰ. 阅读理解Popular culture often shows alcohol as a big part of the college experience in theUnited States. Television programs and movies about American college life have imagesof wild parties with young people either drinking alcohol or holding a drink. Now, a new study of alcohol use suggests that some college students may be missing meals so they can have more drinks or get drunk faster. Researchers are callingthis kind of behavior “drunkorexia”.The study involved 1, 184 college students between the ages of 18 and 26.Researchers found that 80 percent of those studied had demonstrated some kind ofdrunkorexia in the past three months. They had performed heavy physical exercise, eaten low calorie meals or even missed meals for up to a full day before drinking alcohol.Dipali Rinker organized the study and presented its findings to the Research Societyon Alcoholism in June. She says students see drunkorexia as a way to keep their bodyweight down while drinking alcohol. And it causes them to feel the effects of alcohol quickly and with more intensity(强度). Rinker says unhealthy eating habits are only oneof the reasons why this type of behavior is dangerous. Heavy drinking is linked to drunk driving, unprotected sex, and alcohol poisoning. George Koob, who directs a U. S. governmental agency that studies alcohol related problems, says that the percent of students using alcohol has not increased in recent years. But what worries him is that the number of students drinking to the point of “blacking out” has increased. Blacking out is when a person drinks so much alcohol he has no memory of his actions when drunk. Koob notes that college students in Canada and Europe also face issues with alcohol. But he feels a big part of the problem is that Americans do not fully understand alcohol’s effects. Most people do not know the part of the brain where decisions are made is not fully developed until age 25 and that alcohol harms the development of that part of the brain, he adds. 1. What is the purpose of the behavior “drunkorexia”? A. To get drunk. B. To drink more alcohol. C. To take exercise. D. To lose weight. 2. What can heavy drinking result in? A. Unhealthy eating habits. B. Drunkorexia. C. Alcohol poisoning. D. Quick response. 3. Which of the following is the result of blacking out? A. Missing meals. B. Forgetting something one did. C. Having unprotected sex. D. 单元检测(三)Unit 3 A healthy life(满分:120分限时:10()分钟)I .阅读理解AFew laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled 一to $1.01 per pack 一smokers have jammed telephone "quit lines" across the country seeking to kick the habit. This is not a surprise to public health advocates・ They" ve studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive. Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase. The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message. Tobacco taxes improve public health・ They raise money and most particularly, and they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted・ Yet the rate of taxation varies widely. In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation, a pack of Marlboro Light Kings cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday・ Charleston, S, C・, where the 7-cent-a-pack tax is the lowest in the nation. The price was $4.78・The influence is obvious・In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys 一13.8%, far below the national average. By comparison, 26% of high school students smoke in Kentucky, Other low-tax states have similarly depressing teen-smoking records.Hal Rogers, Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low-income Americans “who choose to smoke.”That" s true, but there is more reason in keeping future generations of low-income workers from getting hooked in the first place. As for today' s adults, if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.1 • The text is mainly about _______ ・A ・ the price of cigarettesB ・ tie rate of teen smokingC・ the effect of tobacco tax increase D. the differences in tobacco tax rate2. The underlined word “deter" in Paragraph 3 most probably means _________ .A. prevent B • removeC. benefitD. free3. Rogers' attitude towards the low-income smokers might be that ofA. tolerance B • unconcernC. doubtD. sympathy4.Whcit can we learn from the last paragraph?A.The new tax will be beneficial in the long run.B- Low-income Americans are more likely to fall ill.C.Future generations will be hooked on smoking・D.Adults will depend more on their families.BAsk any group of teenagers in the UK what they most like to eat, and foods like pizzas, curries, pasta, burgers and chips are bound to get a mention 一and many young people would probably also list hanging out at the local fast-food restaurant as one of their favorite pastimes (V肖遣)•But what teenagers like to eat is not necessarily what they should be eating. According to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey, far too many young people in the UK between the ages of 4 and 18 consume too much fat, sugar and salt in their diet and take in too many calories• Meanwhile their intake of starchy carbohydrates (含淀粉的碳水化合物),fibre, iron, vitamins and calcium is too low.For a growing body, eating foods containing plenty of calcium, such as milk, yoghurt and cheese, is particularly important as calcium is essential for the development of healthy, strong bones. Similarly, foods that are rich in iron are good for young, rapidly developing bodies, so red meat, bread, green vegetables, dried fruit and fortified (营养强化白勺)breakfast cereals are also recommended. It is during our teenage years that lifestyle habits can become entrenched (确立的),so it is crucial that young people are educated about what foods are good for them. In 2005, and in an attempt to change eating habits and open teenagers' minds to new flavours and new tastes, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver launched a "Feed Me Better^ campaign. As a part of television series, "Jamie" s School Diners", he worked with teachers and cooks in a number of schools across the UK to provide more healthy, nutritious school meal options. Although there was initial resistance from some teenagers and parents, the campaign was generally hailed as (被赞为)a huge success and helped to influence governmental policy on nutritional standards for school meals. No one expects to end the teenage love affair with fast and junk food but, hopefully, if projects like “Feed Me Better^ and the Government,s own "Change 4 Life" campaign continue to give out the right messages, more young people will understand the importance of balancing occasional treats with healthier food options・5.What can we conclude from the first two paragraphs?A・ British teenagers eat too much junk food・B.British teenagers need to take in more calcium・C.What British teenagers like to eat is probably what their bodies need・D・ British teenagers should reduce their intake of starchy carbohydrates・6・ Young people need calcium and iron_______ .A.to improve their brainpower B ・ to build healthy strong bodiesC. to provide energy for their bodyD. to help change their eating habits7・ According to the article, Jamie Oliver launched a campaign at schools to _______A.show off his excellent cooking skillsB • teach stud ents how to cook nutritious mealsC・ introduce governmenfal policy on nutritional standards for school mealsD.draw the public' s attention to the importance of nutritious school meals8.Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the article?A.Teenagers shouldn,t eat any junk food at all.B.It is difficult to make children understand the importance of a healthy diet.C.It is OK to eat a little bit junk food, as long as you eat healthily most of the time・D.Our eating habits are developed in our teenage years and then influence our lifestyle・cRetail therapy (购物疗法)really does exist, and the desire to shop could be caused by a fear of death・ It has long been considered as the ultimate (终极的)way to let off stress by some members of the women. Now, U・ S・ scientists have discovered not only does retail therapy exist, but that it could be caused by an individual s fear of sudden death.Researchers found materialistic people thought terrorism and war morestressful than others.Psychologists believe the rise of materialism around the world and its treatmenteffect on extreme stress might be a response to fear of deathcaused by acts of terrorism, disease and natural disasters. The scientists from Michigan State University said people with possession obsessions often have lower self-esteem than others so are more likely splurge following severe psychologicaltrauma.Ayalla Ruvio, a business professor studying people' s shopping habits while rockets fell in Israel, said: "When the going gets tough, the materialistic go shopping. This compulsive and impulsive spending is likely to produce even greater stress and lower well-being・ Essentially, materialism appears to make bad events even worse. ”D匚Ruvio led a two-part study of Israeli citizens living in a town that came under extreme rocket attacks for about six months in 2007. She compared 139 residents of the southern town with 170 from another town that was not under attack to see how their symptoms of post-traumatic stress andshopping habits varied. De Ruvio analyzed the psychological condition of the two groups and found that, when faced with a mortal threat, those who are highly materialistic suffered much higher levels of post-traumatic stress, while their tendency to buy impulsively and compulsively was increased・D E Ruvio said: 'The relationship between materialism and stress may be more harmful than commonly thought."The second stage of their research, published in the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, surveyed 855 Americans about their materialistic nature and fear of death. They found shopping was used to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety about death among more materialistic people, but this was in response to fear of a variety of life-threatening events like car accidents, criminal attacks and natural disasters・9.Which of the following opinions is NOT right according to the text?A.The materialistic believe terrorism and war more stressful than others.B.Psychologists believe acts of terrorism, diseases and natural disasters cause the rise of materialism ・C・ The scientists think people with possession obsessions often have higher self-respect.D・ The scientists think people with possession obsessions have more severe mental trauma>10.What,s the result about D匚Ruvio" s research?A. Their teachers completed questionnaires (调查表)about the students' academic efforts. He found some students never or hardly ever reported dating from middle to high school, and these students had consistently the best study skills according to their teachers. Other students dated infrequently in middle school but increased the frequency of dating in high school."At all points in time, teachers rated the students who reported the lowest frequency of dating as having the best study skills and the students with the highest dating as having the worst study skill s, ” according to the journal article・ Study skills refer to behaviors that lead to academic success such as doing work for extra credit, being well organized, finishing homework, working hard and reading assigned chapters.u Dating a classmate may have the same emotional complications of dating a co-worker, n Orpinas said, “when the couple break up, they have to continue to see each other in class and perhaps witness the ex-partner dating someone else. If, in addition, we are careless about our diets, our bodies soon become loose and fatty and our systems slowmoving. There are some aspects(方面)of our unhealthy lives that we cannot avoid. I am thinking of such features of modern city life as pollution, noise, rushed meals and stress. But keeping fit is a way to reduce the effects of these evils. The usual suggestion to a person who is looking for a way to keep fit is to take up some sport or other. While it is true that every weekend you will find people playing football and hockey in the local park, they are outnumbered a hundred to one by the people who are simply watching them. For those who do not particularly enjoy competitive sports—and it is especially difficult to do so if you are not good at them—there are such separate activities as cycling, walking, jogging and swimming. What often happens though is that you do them in such a leisurely way, so slowly, that it is doubtful if you are doing yourself much good, except for the fact that you have at least managed to get up out of your armchair.Even after you have found a way for keeping in shape, through sports or gymnastics, you are still only halfway to good health, because, according to the experts, you must also master the art of complete mental and physical relaxation(放松). It has to do with deep breathing, emptying your mind of all thoughts, meditation, and so on. Yoga, as practised in the West, is the most widely known and popular of the systems for achieving the necessary state of relaxation. It seems ironical(讽刺性的), though, that as our lives have improved in a material sense we have found it increasingly necessary to go back to forms of activity—physical effort on the one hand and relaxation on the other—which were the natural way of life of our forefathers.44. Pollution, noise and stress are examplesof .A. causes of unfitnessB. bad features of living in the cityC. the things we can completely do away withD. unavoidable things in the city45. The vehicle has cleared a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA )(联邦航空管理委员会)regulation for craft classification(分类)by weight. A well-designed production model might be just around the corner, according to multiple reports. At issue was mass-based company Terrafugia wanting its “Transition”vehicle to be classified as a “Light Sport Aircraft”by the FAA so people eager to fly it would need only 20 hours of flying time. Yet the two-seater vehicle came in 110 pounds overweight in providing roadworthy-assuring safety items. The FAAsaid that so long as customers are advised about this extra weight, the car-plane mixture can be sold. The Terrafugia completed its maiden voyage last March in upstate New York. According to its maker, the Terrafugia can transform from a roadable vehicle that can hit a highway speed of 65 miles per hour to a winged aircraft in 30 seconds. The plane version can cruise at about 115 miles per hour and cover about 400 miles worth of the area before needing a refill of regular unleaded gas.The price of a Terrafugia is expected to be around $200,000 and deliveries could start next year, assuming the vehicle passes crash tests. The company has envisioned its vehicle as finding a home with amateur pilots who live near air fields, but as any Jetsons' fan knows, flying cars might well be the wave of the future.48. A(2019·新课标卷II)Many of us love July because it’s the month when nature’s berries and stone fruits are in abundance. These colourful and sweet jewels form British Columbia’s fields are little powerhouses of nutritional protection.Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein (蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants (抗氧化物质). The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares? However, they are rich in vitamin C.When combined with berries of slices of other fruits, frozen bananas make an excellent base for thick, cooling fruit shakes and low fat “ice cream”. For this purpose, select ripe bananas for freezing as they are much sweeter. Remove the skin and place them in plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you like, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice on the bananas will prevent them turning brown. Frozen bananas will last several weeks, depending on their ripeness and the temperature of the freezer. If you have a juicer, you can simply feed in frozen bananas and some berries or sliced fruit. Out comes a “soft-serve” creamy dessert, to be eaten right away. This makes a fun activity for a children’s party; they love feeding the fruit and frozen bananas into the top of the machine and watching the ice cream come out below.1. And while it might be the natural option when there isn’t a box of tissues around, it can be bad for you. The main reasons people feel the need to pick their nose is to clear it of dried liquid, stop an itch (痒),or just because it feels good. Boogers(鼻屎)form when dried liquid and cilia, the tiny hairs that line the nostrils(鼻孔),trap the dust, dirt, and other things. When boogers build up in your nose, it can be uncomfortable, and sometimes just blowing into a tissue doesn’t do the trick.Otolaryngologist Erich P.V oigt, MD, told Business Insider that picking your nose can cause injuries and bleeding within your nostrils. That’s not terribly damaging, but when the bacteria from your hands get into your body, it can cause a cold and flu. So doctors strongly suggest not picking the nose.If dry winter air is causing the dirty liquid to harden in your nostrils, making you want to pick, consider damping the air at home, or taking a steam shower to soften things up in there.Children, who are most famous for having a finger up their nose, sometimes don’t realize how much injury they’re causing, and sometimes it can lead to nose bleeds. So, next time you go to pick your nose, think about how many bacteria are on your hands and in your boogers, and maybe reach for a tissue instead. Even if you’re alone, and not waiting for the light to turn green, please, use a tissue.8.Why do people pick their nose?A. Because they want to disgust others.B. Because they have the need to do it.C. Because they have nothing else to do.D. Because they don’t have tissues around.9.Which of the following can replace the underlined part " do the trick" in Paragraph 1?A. actB. workC. playD. help10.Which can help people avoid a cold and flu according to the text?A. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off — if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that "night milk" contains more melatonin (褪黑激素),which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.12.According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk.A. started sleep more easilyB. were more anxiousC. were less activeD. woke up later13.Which of the following is true of melatonin according to the text?A.
