New Concept English 2 Lesson 53: A Remarkable Woman
In this lesson, we are introduced to a remarkable woman
named Florence Nightingale. She was born in 1820 in Italy to a
wealthy and well-connected British family. Despite the
expectations of her social class and gender, she felt a calling to
become a nurse and help those in need.
Florence's remarkable journey began when she volunteered
as a nurse during the Crimean War. The conditions at British

Lesson 53
1. c
根据课文第二行… they have been trying to find out how
the fire began 能够判断出只有c. wanted to find out what had
A bird had snatched up the snake from
the ground and then dropped it on to the wires… When it I
did so, it sent sparks down to the ground and these
immediately started a fire 能够判断只有d. a snake which had
been dropped on to the wires by a bird
3. a
a. is causing 是实行时,b. has caused 是完成时,d.
Broken glass

Lesson 53
Title: My Dream Job
The question of what one wants to be when they grow up is
a common conversation starter, often heard from childhood well
into adult life. For many, the answer to this question may change
over time as interests, skills, and circumstances evolve. However,
there are some individuals who have known their dream job from
a young age and have pursued it with unwavering determination.
I am one of those individuals.
Ever since I was a child, I have always wanted to become a
veterinarian. Growing up surrounded by animals, I developed a
deep love and respect for all creatures big and small. I would
spend hours studying animal anatomy, reading books about
different species, and volunteering at the local animal shelter. As
I grew older, my passion for animals only intensified, solidifying
