Unit 12 University DaysI. Background Information:University is always the most active place in the society, and university life is one of the most unforgettable things in one's life. University students are becoming older and older, while their hearts are becoming younger and younger. Now days, students eat with spoons instead of chopsticks; now days, students watch cartoon movies and read cartoon books more than any other kind of movies or books; students talk a lot about cartoon characters. Just like a student of China language department who do not know Li Bai; an English major who does not know Shakespeare; a physics major student who doesn't know Einstein, it is almost incredible if a university student doesn't know xiao wan zi, the lion king etc. we do not talk much about poetry or essays; we do not think much about physics; we do not argue about political questions anymore. Instead, we talk about cartoon movie; we act like cartoon characters; we are influenced a lot by those cartoons. Cartoon movies are a prevailing topic among students. We are changing university into kinder garden.Although there are many cinemas in the campus, many students prefer to use the computer to watch movie, especially bachelors. There are a lot of movies on the Internet. But not all rooms have computers. When there is a movie played in one room, lots of people go to the room. We cheer for the good luck of the heroes; we feel pity for the separation of the happy couples; we could not help beating the computer when we see misfortune falls upon them. Much of our spare time is spent on computer movies.Any time you enter a dormitory, you will certainly hear the sound of guns, pistols, bombs and the scream of dying people. You may think you entered a battlefield by mistake. Do not be afraid, because that is just a kind of video game. It seems that since September 11th terrorist attack, counter strike has become very popular. Everyone is talking about counter terrorism. The dormitory is changing into a battlefield. After all, we are students and our main job is to study. Classroom is the best place to study, especially near the exam. Every desk is placed a book or a notebook. But at other time, we usually do part-time jobs out of school, play games and so on. Near the exam, everyone feels that it is hard to pass the exam. So the classroom, the libraries are full of students. It seems that the population in the campus increased a lot.Our foreign language department is called a small UN, because the main languages in the world are all found here. English is with no doubt the most popular language in university. There are also Japanese, French, Germany and so on. In the morning, you can hearall kinds of language in the campus. It seems that you are in a UN conference and all the students are diplomats.It seems that we have never been tired of talking, especially talking before sleep. Students talk about everything; from study to games, from political leader to classmates and friends. Some people think that it is useless and sometimes harmful to talkall the times. But I think it is very useful. At least we can communicate with one other frequently.University life is an important stage in one's life. Definition:American Marketing Association (AMA) defines advertising as “the non-personal communication of information usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature about products, services or ideas by identified sponsors through the various media.” Today, with the development of the technology and the diversity of the mass media, advertising has influenced us pervasively in our daily life. However, whatever the promotive strategies advertising takes, language is the main carrier of message all along, as The Language of Advertising, by Vesterg ard & Schroder, says, “Advertising takes many forms, but in most of the m language is of crucial importance.” Advertising language is a style of immediate impact and rapid persuasion. The point of an advertisement is to persuade you of the merits of a particular product or service, in order that you will take out some of your money.2. Advertising Components: According to the definition of the advertising, most of the advertisements should have the following components:(1) AdvertiserThe advertiser is the sender of information and all the advertising activities should be consistent with the purpose and willingness of the advertiser. Therefore, the advertiser is the main body of advertising, namely, every advertisement should have its specific owner of the advertising information. The specific owner should be a recognizable group, including corporation, enterprise, government, organization and individual. There are three significances of an advertiser (both for the advertiser themselves, and for the public): firstly, it’s easy for the target audience to recognize the company and the products of it, which will promote the propagandas andthe sale of its products; secondly, it will establish a high reputation for the group, enterpr ise, or the individual in order that the consumer will trust the brand; finally, it will prevent the advertiser from counterfeiting and deceiving by legal supervision.(2) A certain amount of money paidThe advertising fees a re paid by the advertiser no matter it’s operated by itself or other agency. Because advertising is a kind of marketing action, an advertiser has to pay for its advertisement. There are quite a few people who consider that too much advertising fee will inevitably raise the price and cost of the product, and thereby will influence the sale of the product. However, this conclusion is a one-sided view. Advertising can bring you a huge profit by reasonable planning a nd proper operation.(3) Advertising InformationAdvertising information is the principal content s an advertisement wants to disseminate. Advertising is a serious of planning action, so the information of adve rtising should be aimed at the certain target market and consumers, and should avoid aimlessness. The dissemination of information should be accurate, definite, recognizable and moderate in length. An effe ctive advertisement involves not only “what to say”, but also ‘how to say”.(4) Advertising MediaMedia are the means of the dissemination of advertising, including newspaper, magazine, broadcast, TV program, billboard and mail. The newspaper, magazine, broadcast and TV are called the four main media of advertising.
