Unit 13 People李仕才一、阅读理解。
Celeste Ng,a new writer, has gained recognition for her first novel,Everything I Never Told You.Ng's parents came from Hong Kong,China in the 1960s.Ng was born in America and grew up in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, and Shaker Heights,Ohio,in a family of scientists.Celeste went to Harvard University and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award.Although her novel is not about race, the characters are Asian. The main character is Lydia,a teenage girl, who is the favorite of three children born to a white mother and a ChineseAmerican father. The story is about Lydia's disappearance, and the emotions the family goes through as the mystery unfolds. The whole family deals with sorrow, regret, and exposed secrets as they search for their lost daughter.Though the characters in this story are Asian,Ng says she didn't really want to include Asian characters. She was afraid people would think the story was about real people in her life.Because she grew up in America and doesn't speak Chinese, she was actually surprised that she included Asian characters in the book. The book has taken off, especially on Amazon, where it won the Editor's Pick for No.1 Best Book of the Year in 2014.Ng is still getting used to the attention, saying she is still amazed when people tell her they have read her book. With so many readers,it's safe to say this is a book you should read. But if you're looking for a simple mystery, this book might not be for you. Most readers warn that you should not read this book unless you're prepared to cry.1.The novel Everything I Never Told You ________.A.focuses on a family with a missing childB.discusses the ways to get rid of regretC.exposes the secret of the American worldD.talks about the life of teenagers in America2.Which of the following is TRUE according to Celeste Ng?A.She wanted to help the Asian people.B.She was surprised she wrote about Asian characters.C.She was born in Hong Kong and grew up in America.D.She wanted people to know the characters were real people in her life.3.How do most readers probably find the book?A.It's about race.B.It's a sad story.C.It's a simple mystery.D.It has a surprising ending.4.What is the text mainly about?A.Celeste Ng and her family.B.The awards Celeste Ng won.C.Celeste Ng's learning experiences.D.Celeste Ng and her bestknown novel.【解题导语】本文介绍了美籍华裔作家伍绮诗所写的一部关于一个失踪的小女孩Lydia以及她的家庭经历的小说——Everything I Never Told You。

课下能力提升(十三)阅读理解AIn 1957, Max Vernon Mathews wrote the first computer program called Music, which enabled a computer to create sound and play it back. He was then working as an engineer at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. It enabled a large IBM computer to play a seventeensecond piece of music he had written. The computer was so slow that it took an hour to playthe seventeensecond piece of music. So Mathews moved thework to a tape player to play the music at a normal speed. He later said that the sound quality of the musical noteswas not great, but the technical importance of the music washuge. The sciencefiction writer Arthur C. Clarke visited Bell Laboratories in the 1960s. He h eard a computer “sing” the song Daisy Bell on devices (设备) and learned about the programs developed by Mathews and other engineers. Clarke noted this technology in his book 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was later made into a movie.Mathews continued creating other versions of the Music program. He became interested in how computers could help musicians outside recording studios. The Groove program he developed was the first computer program made for live performances. He also developed an electronic device he called the Radio Baton, which looks like two drum sticks. It enables the user to control the speed and sound levels of orchestral music (管弦乐) played on a computer by moving the two sticks on a special electronic surface.Mathews said he believed modern musicians were not making full use of the power of computer music. He said a violin always sounds like a violin. But with his Music, the way a violin sounds is unlimited. He did not want computer sounds to replace live music, but he hoped computers would one day be considered serious instruments.语篇解读:本文是记叙文。

Who leaves a voice mail message rather than texts you? Who asks for a fact easily found on Google? Don’t these people realize that they’re wasting your time?Maybe I’m the rude one f or not appreciating life’s little politeness. But many social agreed standards just don’t make sense to people drowning in digital communication. In texts, you don’t have to declare who you are or even say hello.Email, too, is slower than a text. Voice mail is a now impolite way of trying to connect. My father learned this lesson after leaving me a dozen voice mail messages, none of which I listened to. Exasperated,he called my sister to express his dissatisfaction that I never returned hi s phone calls. “Why are you leaving him voice mail?” my sister asked. “Just text him.”In the age of the smartphone, there is no reason to ask onceacceptable questions about: the weather forecast, a business’s phone number, or directions to a house, a restaurant, which can be easily found on Google Maps. But people still ask these things. And when you answer, they respond with a thankyou email. How to handle these differing standards? Easy: Consider your audience. Some people, especially older ones, appreciate a thankyou message. Module 4 课下能力提升(十三)阅读理解AThere are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. The origins of most of the days are unknown. They were certainly not created by individual people. Other days, however, especially those celebrated in western countries, often owe their origins to a particular person. One of the most popular of these, eventhough it is fairly recent, is Mother's Day.Mothers have always been highly regarded inall cultures. The ancient Romans had afestival known as Hilario, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”. The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years this custom was gradually forgotten and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century.Born in 1864 in Virginia, USA, Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care. Encouraged bya friend, she wrote to thousands of importantpeople —politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials —and asked them to support her idea: a special day of the year for thanking mothers. In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother's Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10 — the second Sunday in May, which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis's mother had died. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother's Day throughout the United States.Soon there was a Mother's Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world.Anna Jarvis, a sad and disillusioned (失望的) woman, died in 1948. The custom she had worked so hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business.
