A) He has difficulty making sense of logic.

B) Statistics and logic are both challenging subjects.

C) The woman should seek help from the tutoring service.

D) Tutoring services are very popular with students.

W: I’m having a lot of trouble with logic and it seems my professor can’t expl ain it in a way that makes sense to me.

M: You know, there is a tutoring service on campus. I was about to drop statistics before they helped me out.

Q: What does the man mean?

另外,本题中还涉及了不少常用的短语:make sense to sb(让某人听得懂;对某人来讲有意义),drop the class(退课),help sb out(帮助某人脱离困境)。

W: There were more than a hundred people at Kate’s birthday party. How come she’s got so many friends?

M: It’s really no surprise. You know she was popular even when she was a child. Q: What does the man imply about Kate?

M: My washing machine is more than 15 years old and it has worked just fine until last night.

W: You’ll never be able to get parts for it, even from Japan. So it might be time to invest a more recent model.

Q: What does the woman suggest the man do?

W: I heard about your promotion, you must be thrilled.

M: Not really, the new office is huge, but the workload has doubled.

Q: What do we learn about the man from the conversation?

19. A) He prefers the smaller evening classes.

B) He has signed up for a day course.

C) He has to work during the day.

D) He finds the evening course cheaper.

20. A) Learn a computer language.

B) Learn data processing.

C) Buy some computer software.

D) Buy a few course books.

W: Hello, Parkson College. May I help you?

M: Yes. I’m looking for information on courses in computer programming. I would need it for the fourth semester.

W: Do you want a day or evening course?

M: Well, it would have to be an evening course since I work during the day

W: Aha. Have you taken any courses in data processing?

M: No.

W: Oh. Well, data processing is a course you have to take(20题答案点在此处被读到,视听一致的原则) before you can take computer programming….

Q19: Why does the man choose to take an evening course?

Q20: What does the man have to do before taking the course of computer programming?

32. A) The atmosphere they live in is rather unreal.

B) Their parents put too much pressure on them.

C) It’s hard for them to get along with other kids.

D) They have to live in the shadow of their parents.

35. A) The lifestyle depicted in Hollywood movies.

B) The worship of money, beauty and pleasure.

C) The attention the media focuses on them.

D) The pursuing of perfection in performance.

In Hollywood, everybody wants to be rich, famous and beautiful. Nobody wants to be old, unknown and poor. For Hollywood kids, life can be difficult, because they grow up in such an unreal atmosphere. Their parents are ambitious and the children are part of the parents’ ambitions.

末段:Hollywood has always been the city of dreams. The kids there live unreal lives where money, beauty and pleasure are the only gods. Will children around the world soon start to think the same? Or do they already?

Q32: Why is life said to be difficult for Hollywood kids?

Q35: What will probably have negative effects on the lives of Hollywood kids?

14. A) He didn’t like physics any more.

B) His eyesight was too poor.

C) Physics was too hard for him.

D) He had to work to support himself.

15. A) He was not happy with the new director.

B) He was not qualified to be an engineer.

C) He wanted to travel.

D) He found his job boring.

16. A) He wanted to work with his friend.

B) He enjoyed traveling around the world.

C) He wanted to go to Spain.

D) He was rejected by the engineering firm.

17. A) He enjoyed teaching English.

B) He wanted to earn more to support his family.

C) The owner of the school promised him a good position.

D) He could earn more as a teacher than as a travel agent.

When I was at school, my ambition was to be a pilot in the Air Force. But my eyesight wasn’t good enough. So I had to give up the idea. I went to university and studied physics.

I wanted to stay on there and do research, but my father died at about that time. So I thought I’d better get a job and earn my living.(对应14题) I started working in an engineering firm.

I expected to stay in that job for a long time. But then, they appointed a new managing director. I didn’t get on with him, so I resigned and applied for a job with another engineering company.(对应15题) They offered me a job in Spain. I’ve always liked Spain, so I took it. (对应16题) I worked in the travel agency for two years and then they wanted to send me to South America.

But I had just got married. So I decided to stay here. Then we had a baby and I wasn’t earning enough to support the family. So I started giving English lessons at a school in the evening.

Q14: Why did the man give up studying physics?

Q15: Why did the man resign from the engineering firm?

Q16: Why did the man take the job at the travel agency?

Q17: Why did the man start to teach English part time?

第15题,正确答案是A,是把原文中的not get on with somebody换成了选项中的not happy with somebody,表示“与某人相处得不好“。

to go to Spain。

第17题,正确答案是B,是把原文中的wasn’t earning enough to support the family 换成了选项中的wanted to earn more to support his family。

第1遍:先写下句子的开头,尤其是主语,并注意句子的大意;

第2遍:若感觉句子实在太难,可以放弃中间部分,努力写下句子的结尾;

1993 Package Holidays Package holidays, covering a two weeks' stay in an attractive place, are increasingly popular. Once you get to the airport, it is up to the tour operator to see that you get safely to your destination.Everything is laid on for you. There is, in fact, no reason for you to bother to arrange anything yourselves. You make friends and have a good time. But there is very little chance that you will really get to know the local people. This is even less likely on a coach tour, when you spend almost your entire time traveling.Of course, there are carefully planned stops for you to visit historic buildings and monuments. You may visit the beautiful, the historic, the ancient. But time is always short. There is also the added disadvantage of being obliged to spend you holiday with a group of people you have never met before. (1994) The American Family The American family unit is changing. There used to be mainly two types of families, the extended and the nuclear. The former included mother, father, children, and some other relatives such as grandparents, living in the same house or nearby. Then as the economy progressed from agricultural to industrial, people began moving to different parts of the country in order to search for job opportunities. These moves split up the extended family. The nuclear family consisting of only parents and children has therefore become far more wide spread. Today’s family, however, can be composed of diverse co mbinations. With the divorce rate nearly one in two, there's an increase in single-parent homes—a father or mother living with one or more children. Blended families occur when divorced men and women remarry and combine the children from former marriages into a new family. On the other hand, there is an increase in childless couples while one in rive Americans lives alone. (1995) Unidentified Flying Objects There are many explanations for why UFOs visit the Earth. / The most popular one is that they maybe visitors from other planets./ To fly such aircraft, their builders must develop different forms of aviation,/because they seem to fly much faster than normal aircraft./ The UFOs, it is believed, must contain scientists/ from other planets who are studying life on earth./ It is even believed that several such aircraft may have landed on earth/ and the space visitors may be living amongst us./ But there are also less fantastic explanations available./ Although some sightings of UFOs are difficult to explain, most can be explained quite easily./ In many cases the observers might have made a mistake./ They might have seen a weather balloon or an aircraft./ Or the light they saw in the sky might have been light from the ground,/ reflected on to the clouds./ However, the exact cause of many sightings still remained a mystery.

41.Apology Helps It is never easy to admit you are in the wrong. Being human, we all need to know the art of apologizing. Look back with honesty and think how often you have judged roughly, you said unkind things, and pushed yourself ahead at the expense of a friend. Then count the occasions when you indicated clearly and truly that you were so sorry. A bit frightening, isn’t it? It is frightening, isn’t it? It is frightening because some deep wisdom in us knows that when even a small wrong has been committed, some mysterious moral feeling is disturbed; and it stays out of balance until fault is acknowledged and regret expressed. A heartfelt apology can not only heal a damaged relationship but also make it stronger. If you can think of someone who deserves an apology from you, someone you have wronged, or judged too roughly, or just neglected, do something about it right now. 42. Sleep Why is it so difficult to fall asleep when you are overtired? There is no one answer that applies to every individual. It is possible to feel “tired” physically and still be unable to fall asleep, because while your body may be exhausted, you do not feel sleepy. It is not so easy to simply “turn off”. Lack of sleep complicates matters even more. Experts say adults need at

essay writing

45 The Influence of Life

45 The Influence of Life In the early times when human beings hunted and gathered food, they were not in control of their environment. They could only interact with their surroundings as the other lower animals did. When they learned to make fire, however, they became capable of altering their environment. To provide themselves with fuel, they cut down trees. They also burned clearings in forests to increase the growth of grass and to provide a greater grazing area for the wild animals that human beings fed upon. This development led to famp3ing and the domestication of animals. Fire provided the means for cooking plants which had previously been inedible. Only when the process of meeting the basic need for food reached a certain level was it possible for humans to follow other pursuits such as setting up families, fomp3ing societies and founding cities. Useful words and Expressions: 1. interact with 与……

Section B 26: While Gail Obcamp, an American artist was giving a speech on the art of Japanese brush painting to an audience that included visitors from Japan, she was confused to see that many of her Japanese listeners have their eyes closed. Were they tuned off because an American had the nerve to instruct Japanese in their own art form or they deliberately tried to signal their rejection of her Obcamp later found out that her listeners were not being disrespectful. Japanese listeners sometimes closed their eyes to enhance concentration. Her listeners were showing their respect for her by chewing on her words. Some day you may be either a speaker or a listener in a situation involving people from other countries or members of minority group in North America. Learning how different cultures signal respect can help you avoid misunderstandings. Here are some examples. In the deaf culture of North America, many listeners show applause not by clapping their hands but by waving them in the air. In some cultures, both overseas and in some minority groups in North America, listeners are considered disrespectful if they look directly at the speaker. Respect is shown by looking in the general direction but avoiding direct eye contact.
