A

Four Wild Animal Species Were Endangered

Maybe you can still see them at the zoo. But that doesn’t mean they’re doing alright in the wild.

Tigers

All six tiger species are endangered, with Sumatran tigers and South China tigers at a seriously endangered status. The main reasons for their population decline are illegal hunting and destroyed habitats, as humans clear forests to gather timber and build roadways. Only about 3890 tigers presently live in the wild.

Ground squirrels

That’s right, even squirrels are endangered, specifically the San Joaquin ground squirrel. Native to California, USA, these guys have been disappearing since 1979 on account of the construction and human development going through their habitat. Their total population is unknown, but it could be anywhere between 124000 and 413000.

Giraffes

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature recently put giraffes at a vulnerable(脆弱的) status, the level just before endangered. The giraffe population has declined 40 percent in the last 30 years, primarily due to loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Some giraffes are killed just for their tails, which are considered status symbols in Africa.

Asian elephants

The main threat to Asian elephants, one of the most intelligent animals, is their shrinking habitat. As the human population grows, people invade their land to build roads and railway tracks. Elephants in Myanmar are at an especially high risk for being captured and traded or used illegally

in the tourist industry. Fewer than 50000 are left on the entire continent.

1. What is the total population of tigers living in the wild?

A. Around 3890.

B. 50000.

C. 124000.

D. 413000.

2.Which of the following is considered one of the most intelligent animals?

A. Tigers.

B. Giraffes.

C. Ground squirrels.

D. Asian elephants.

3.What is the common threat to the four wild animals?

A. Illegal hunting.

B. Disturbed habitat.

B

Growing up can sometimes seem like a roller coaster. There are ups and downs and unexpected turns. Abuse or neglect by an adult can make the ride even rougher. But being bullied(欺凌)by another child can leave especially lasting scars. That's the finding of a new study.

Bullied kids face a high risk of mental health problems as teens and as young adults. Indeed bullied kids might be worse off than those who had suffered physical abuse or neglect, the study found.

Dieter Wolke works at the University of Warwick in England. Until recently, most studies of child victims focused not on bullying but on maltreatment, this psychologist says. Maltreatment includes physical or emotional abuse, neglect or other behaviors that can harm a child.

Wolke's team wanted to better understand how long-term effects of bullying compare to those due to maltreatment. They focused on 4,026 children in the United Kingdom and 1,420 more in the United States. Information about bullying and maltreatment was collected for American children to age 13. They collected the same information for British youth up to age 16. The researchers also gathered data on each individual's mental health as a young adult.

Among the Americans, 36 percent of bullied kids had mental problems later. Those problems included anxiety, which is a state of excessive worry. They also included depression. That is a feeling of hopelessness that can last a long time. Among kids who had been maltreated by adults, 17 percent later suffered mental health problems. That was less than half the rate seen in people

who had been bullied as school kids.

In the U. K. group, the difference was less spectacular. Roughly 25 percent of the bullied kids reported mental health problems later, compared with about 17 percent who had been maltreated.

But however you look at it, the finding are disturbing, Wolke says. They show that bullied children have similar or worse mental health problems later in life. An d that’s why he says schools, health services and other agencies must work together to end bullying.

4. According to the passage, which of the statements is TRUE?

A. Kids treated cruelly recover soon after they grow up

B. Most studies didn’t pay much attention to bullying until recently

C. Most kids with maltreatment experience tend to become violent adults

D. All bullied kids have mental health problems.

B. By stating arguments

C. By explaining statistical data

D. By giving examples

6. The underlined word “spectacular” in paragraph 6 could be best replaced by _______.

A. slight

B.similar

C. specific

D. dramatic

7. According to the text, what does Wolke suggest doing?

A. Taking good care of children

B. Joining hands to stop bullying

C. Keeping psychologically healthy

D. Comparing different types of abuse

C

Robots make me nervous—especially the ones which seem to think for themselves. I was embarrassed to admit this till I heard that Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, felt the same way.

Gates said in an interview with the social networking and new s website Reddit: “I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. First the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage well. A few decades after that though the intelligence is stro ng enough to be a concern.”

Well, maybe I don’t have to worry about my computer and kitchen equipment yet. After I use them I can always pull the plug. But in the future, machines might find a way to prevent us from switching them off. There’s a terrible thought!

Maybe the problem with computers too clever for us is not that they are evil like some we’ve seen in sci-fi movies. What could put us in danger is that they might be too efficient. That’s what philosopher Nick Bostrom from Oxford University believes. He says that machines are indifferent to humans and in pursuit of their own goals, the destruction of people might be just additional damage. Bostrom gives us an example: A machine which might have as its only goal to produce as many paperclips as possible might look at human bodies as extra material for paperclips and go after you. Because it is, well, a machine, it would not take pity on you.

It’s a good thing that American writer Isaac Asimov thought about how far robots can go and left us his three rules of robotics. They state that a robot may not hurt a human being or allow the human being to come to harm.

I’m glad my machines at home are “dumb”. All my cleaner wants to take over is the carpet in my living room. Let’s hope they don’t create an ap pliance which wants to take over the world!.

8. The author quoted Bill Gates’ words in Paragraph 2 in order to make the text________.

A. better-known

B. more persuasive

C. better-organized

D. more interesting

9. An intelligent paperclip machine would harm us because _______.

A. it is much cleverer than us

B. it would take over the world

C. it would see us just as material

D. it has the strong feeling of destroying us

10. How does the author feel about Isaac Asimov’s rules of robo tics?

A. Optimistic

B. Sympathy

C. Disappointed

D. Regretful

11. What does the text mainly focus on?

A. The benefits of future robots.

B. The new applications of robots.

C. The concern for super intelligence.

D. The popularity of robots in the future.

D

A young woman sits alone in café sipping tea and reading a book. She pauses briefly to write in a nearby notepad before showing her words to a passing caféwaiter: “Where are the toilets please?”This is a familiar scene in Tokyo’s so-called “silent cafes”, where customers are not

allowed to speak, and only communicate by writing in notepads.

The concept rises by a desire to be alone among young Japanese, a situation caused by economic uncertainty, a shift in traditional family support structures and the growing social isolation. The phenomenon is not limited to coffee shops but covers everything from silent discos, where participants dance alone wearing wireless headphones connected to the DJ, to products such as small desk tents designed for conversation-free privacy in the office. One Kyoto company even offers single women the opportunity to have a “one woman wedding”–a full bridal affair, complete with white dress and ceremony, and the only thing missing is the groom. The trend has its own media expression –“botchi-zoku”, referring to individuals who consciously choose to do things completely on their own.

One recent weekday afternoon, Chihiro Higashikokubaru, a 23-year-old nurse, travelled 90 minutes from her home, to Tokyo on her day off in order to enjoy some solo time. Speaking quietly at the entrance of the café, Miss Higashikokubaru said: “I heard about this place via Twitter and I like the idea of coming here. I work as a nurse and it’s always very busy. There are very few quiet places in Tokyo, and it’s a big busy city. I just want to come and sit somewhere quietly on my own. I’m going to drink a cup of tea and maybe do some drawings. I like the idea of a quiet, calm atmosphere.”

The desire to be isolated is not a new concept in Japan, home to an estimated 3.6 million “hikikomori”– a more extreme example of social recluses(隐士)who withdraw completely from society.

12. What is special about the “silent café”?

A. It provides various tea and books.

B. People are not allowed to communicate.

C. It has attracted many popular young people.

D. It offers service by writing not by speaking.

13. Which of the following accounts for the idea of being alone in Japan?

A. The increasing social isolation.

B. The stable economic situation.

C. The rising demand for privacy.

D. The rapid development of internet.

14. What do we know about Higashikokubaru?

A. She doesn’t like to be a nurse.

B. She doesn’t like the life in big cities.

C. She enjoys her solo time in a quiet place.

D. She travelled to Tokyo on her work days.

15. What is the best title of the passage?

A. Silent cafes

B. Lonely Japanese

C. One woman wedding

D. Social recluses in Japan

或是I like she。

A For me, the greatest story of rags to riches is that of Andrew Carnegie, who started life in poverty but became one of the richest men in the world. Carnegie was born in Scotland in 1835, the son of a weaver. In 1848, the family moved to the United States and at 13Carnegie began to work in a cotton mill, earning $1.5per week. About three years later, he found a better job as a telegraph messenger boy. At work, his superiors were impressed by his abilities and willingness to work hard. In 1853, he gained an office job at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. This was his first big break. He continued to impress and rose rapidly through the company, gaining more and more responsibility. At the same time, Carnegie loved reading very much and made use of every opportunity to visit the library. He read widely on all subjects, particularly literature. Carnegie now began to save a little money and, with the help of his employer, began to make some successful investments. He invested in the iron industry and eventually set up in business himself, owing several iron and steel plants. This was where he made his fortune. By the 1890s, the Carnegie Steel Company was the biggest and most profitable business in the world. Carnegie had always believed that the pursuit of wealth would never end in itself. In his view, successful, wealthy people should redistribute their wealth for the benefit of everyone in society. True to his word, in 1901, at the age of 66, he retired from business and devoted the rest of his life to charity work. Carnegie's lack of formal education and his poor family background clearly didn't put barriers in the A. Becoming more and more intelligent. B. Having a better sense of confidence. C. Reading more and more books. D. Being promoted to higher ranks. 22. When did Carnegie get his first big success in his li f e? A. When he took a job as a telegraph messenger boy. B. When he worked at the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. C. When he made investments in the iron industry. D. When he founded the Carnegie Steel Company. 23. W h at ca n b e lea rn t fro m t h e te x t? A. Carnegie's employers had a high opinion of him. B. Carnegie made the investments independently after saving enough money. C. Carnegie believed that we should try to earn as much money as possible. D. Carnegie could have been more successful if he had been formally educated. 24. Which of the following will be the suitable title for the te x t? A. From Rags to Riches: The Story of Andrew Carnegie B. Andrew Carnegie: A Wealthy Man C. Steel& Iron: The Most Profitable Business D. Intelligence and Good Business Sense: Two Factors in Becoming Wealthy. B We always can see firefighters holding a hose(水管)outside of a burning building, but the Golden Eagles Hotshots don't fight fires quite that way. When they go into action, you may not even see a fire truck. The Hotshots are firefighters who battle fires in wilderness areas. But don't think you'll only find them in their home state California. Wherever there is a national wildfire emergency, the Golden Eagles Hotshots could be there.
