Welcome to the world! Your mom and I are so excited to see who you will become.
When your sister was born, we wrote a letter about the world we hoped she and now you will grow up in a world with better education, ____________, stronger communities, and greater equality（平等）. We wrote that with all the progress in science and technology, your generation（一代人）should live much better lives than ours, and we have a responsibility（责任）to do our part to make that happen.
But rather than write about growing up, we want to talk about childhood. The world can be a serious place. That's why it's important to make time to go outside and play.
You will be busy when you're older, so I hope you take time to smell all the flowers and put all the leaves you want in your bucket now. I hope you read your favorite Dr. Seuss books so many times you started inventing your own stories about the Viper Of VIPP. I hope you ride the carousel (旋转木马) with Max until you have tamed（驯服）every color horse. I hope you run as many laps（圈）around our living room and yard as you want. And then I hope you take a lot of naps. I hope you're a great sleeper. And I hope even in your dreams you feel how much we love you. Childhood is magical. You only get to be a child once, so don't spend it worrying too much about future. You have got us for that, and we'll do everything we possibly can to make sure the world is a better place for you and all children in your generation. August, we love you so much and we're so excited to go on this adventure with you. We wish you a life of joy, love and the same hope you give us.

One day a little boy decided to dig a hole behind his house after watching a science program. My best friend Jenny and I got to the mall for shopping．She held up a white sweater and matching skirt．“Do you like this?”she asked．
“It's great，''I said．Jenny nodded and continued looking while I moved about．touching the beautiful clothes．“ I'll try this on．”Jenny walked towards the dressing room．After a while，she came out in the outfit(一套衣服)．She looked beautiful．
I sighed． Part of me wanted to say how good she looked, but another part stopped the words coming out．Jenny was in such good shape that she'd look good in the outfit．Sometimes, I regretted choosing a best friend who was so pretty．God，why can't I be the one with the rich parents and the great look?More and more， I was envious(妒忌的)of her．
“Well，Teresa，what do you think?”Jenny asked more than once．“Do you like it?''
The outfit looked great on her，but I lied，“Not really．I think you need something with more colors．''
“You think so?"Jenny said doubtfully．
“Just believe me．We'll find something better，"I told her，pushing her back into the dressing room．“You just can't buy the first thing you see．”I did my best to get Jenny out of the store，away from that outfit．As we left，Jenny gave the sweater one last look．Just down the mall，we passed a yogurt place．"My treat，''Jenny said，pulling out her wallet．
I could never say no to chocolate，so we got some and sat down at a table．As Jenny talked without stopping about a million things，I thought about my feelings toward her．Those feelings weren't kind．
Sitting there，▲Jenny was attractive(吸引人的)not just because of her good luck，but more because of her kindness．Treating me to chocolate was far from her only show of generosity．She also let me drive her car and borrow her colothes.
Finishing our chocolate，we headed for the next clothing store．"Look at that red sweater.''Jenny said as we passed the window．"It would be perfect for you．Soon maybe you'll have enough by saving your babysitting money to buy something like that．”
A few minutes earlier，all I had heard was about saving my babysitting money．I had hated the fact that Jenny could ask her parents for anything，and they'd buy it for her．This time，though．I heard more．I heard the voice of someone who loved and cared me for who I was．I needed to express the same to her．

I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives( 观点 ) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.
With this belief, I, at fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people's writing can one discover what works, what doesn't and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read books. Reading reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime.
（1）What can be inferred about the author as a child?
A. He never watched TV.

B. a way of writing
C. a sound quality
D. a world to write about （3）What effect does reading have on the author?
A. It opens up a wider world for him.
B. It helps him to realize his dream.
C. It makes his college life more interesting.
D. It increases his interest in worldwide travel.（4）Which of the following can be the best title of this text?
A. How do I read?
B. What do I read?
C. Why do I read?
D. When do I read?
（1）推理判断题。根据短文第一段中I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with.可知，作者想要成为一名作家，他觉得每个作家都是以阅读开始的，这样他才能找到正确的方式去表达自己的想法。因此这里的voice指的就是一个作家的写作方式。故应选B。
（3）推理判断题。根据短文的最后一段Reading reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn't necessarily be able to have in my lifetime可知，阅读对于作者来说是非常重要的，它可带着作者穿过海洋，沿着丝绸之路，去体验令人激动的经历，这些经历可能在作者的一生中不会拥有的。因此选项中A选项最符合文意，阅读给作者打开了更广阔的世界。故选A

What will the world of the future be like? There are plenty of people who are happy to give their opinion of what we will be doing in 2050. Here are two predictions about the world of tomorrow.
When we dream about the future, many like to think of owning a personal flying car. The advantages are obvious. This technology would allow total freedom of movement. We could fly at 480 km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, some people believe there will be problems with traffic control. If the cars become popular, there is likely to be air traffic jam. Another big problem is mechanical failure. What will happen if the cars stop working? These are problems we must expect if flying cars become a reality.
Three-dimensional printing is another new technology with exciting possibilities. 3D printers are used to build an object with liquid plastic.
They build the object layer by layer until it is complete. Car companies already use 3D printers to make life-size models of car parts, and medical companies use the technology to make man-made body parts. As we move into the future, 3D printing will revolutionize the way we shop, the way we manufacture and the way we treat sick people. The disadvantage is that such equipment will be extremely expensive.
So in the future, we might be able to fly to work or print out new shoes. Although there are some problems to solve before this will be possible, we can certainly dream of a world where
technology makes life easier and safer for millions of people.
（1）What is the passage mainly about?

A. B. C.
（4）What does the underlined word "they" refer to?
A. Car companies.

C. Body parts.
（5）We can infer that the writer ________ about the future life with technology.
A. doesn't care
B. feels hopeful
C. feels disappointed
