A

I have been consistently opposed to feeding a baby regularly. As a doctor, mother and

scientist in child development I believe there is nothing to recommend it, from the baby

of view.

Mothers, doctors and nurses alike have no idea of where a baby’s blood sugar level All we know is that a low level is harmful to brain development and makes a baby easily

annoyed. In this state, the baby is difficult to calm down and sleep is impossible. The baby asks

for attention by crying and searching for food with its mouth.

It is not just unkind but also dangerous to say a four-hourly feeding schedule will make a

baby satisfied. The first of the experts to advocate a strict clock-watching schedule was Dr.

Frederic Truby King who was against feeding in the night. I’ve never heard anything so

ridiculo us. Baby feeding shouldn’t

follow a timetable set by the mum. What is important is

feeding a baby in the best way, though it may cause some inconvenience in the first few weeks.

Well, at last we have copper-bottomed research that supports demand feeding and points

out the weaknesses of strictly timed feeding. The research finds out that babies who are fed on

demand do better at school at age 5, 7, 11 and 14, than babies fed according to the clock. By

the age of 8, their IQ(智商)scores are four to five percent higher than babies fed by a rigid

timetable. This research comes from Oxford and Essex University using a sample(样本)of

10,419 children born in the early 1990s,taking account of parental education, family income, a

health and feeling style. These results don’t surprise me.

child’s

sex and age, the mother’s

Feeding according to schedule runs the risk of harming the rapidly growing brain by taking no

account of sinking blood sugar levels.

I hope this research will put an end to advocating strictly timed baby feeling practices.

A.The baby will sleep well.

B.The baby will have its brain harmed.

C.The baby will have a low blood sugar level.

D.The baby will grow to be wiser by the age of 8.

小题4:The author supports feeling the baby_______.

A.in the night

B.every four hours

C.whenever it wants food

D.according to its blood sugar level

For high school leavers starting out in the working world,it is very important to learn

particular skills and practice how to behave in an interview or how to find all internship(实习).

In some countries, schools have programs to help students onto the path to work. In the Unites

States, however, such programs are still few and far between.

Research shows that if high schools provide career-related courses, students are likely to

get higher earnings in later years. The students are more likely to stay in school, graduate and

go on to higher education.

In Germany, students as young as 13 and 14 are expected to do internships. German

companies work with schools to make sure that young people get the education they need for

future employment.

But in America, education reform programs focus on how well students do in exams

instead of bringing them into contact with the working world. Harvard Education school

professor Robert

Schwartz has criticized education reformers for trying to place all graduates directly on

most

the four-year college track. Schwartz argued that this approach leaves the country’s

vulnerable(易受影响的)kids with no jobs and no skills.

Schwartz believed that the best career programs encourage kids to go for higher education

while also teaching them valuable practical skills at high sch001. James Madison High School

in New York, for example, encourages students to choose classes on career—based courses.

The school then helps them gain on—the-job experience in those fields while they’re still at high school.

However, even for teens whose schools encourage them to connect with work, the job

market is daunting. In the US,unemployment rates for 16-to 19-year-olds are above 20 percent

for the third summer in a row.

“The risk is that if teenagers miss out on the Summer job experience, they become part of this generation of teens who had trouble in landing a job,”said Michael,a researcher in the US.小题1:According to Robert Schwartz,_________.

D.Advice for American high school leavers.

解释说明性的短语或句子,如to be, that is, mean, stand for, namely, to refer to, to mean, in other words等,有时也以同位语、定语从句的形式出现,或用破折号、括弧来表示。

因果关系的语境,通常由because, so ,therefore, so that, so / such… that…

有时文章作者为了增强表达效果,会用一对反义词揭示事物的不同点,形成鲜明的对比,这时只要把握其中的一词,就不难推出另一词的含义,这时句中多见unlike; although; but;

yet; while; on the contrary; on the other hand; for one thing; for another; instead of; rather

词语有or, like, similarly等。

such as, like, for example, for instance等连接性词语往往用来列举说明前面较难理解的名词。

The underlined word ―…‖ in the second(third…) paragraph refers to(means) ______. By saying ―…‖ in the first(second…) paragraph, the author means that ______. In paragraph …, ―…‖ can be replaced by ―______‖. The meaning of ―…‖ in paragraph… is related to ______. Which of the follow ing has the closest meaning to…(paragraph…)? The underlined sentence in the … paragraph probably means that _____. Annealing is a way of making metal softer by heating it and then letting it cool very slowly. It will be very hard but also very brittle — that is, it will break easily. The herdsman, who looks after sheep, earns about 650 yuan a year. The underlined words ―tipping points‖ most probably refer to ―_______‖. A. freezing points B. burning points C. melting points D. boiling points 【解析】C。 In his book, he had challenged readers to make deep cuts in personal emissions to keep the world from reaching extremely important tipping points, such as the melting

Principal Waynes Kettler said he’s worked with many outstanding teachers in his22years as an educator, but Peterson is“just that one step above anybody I’ve ever worked with before.” Kettler and others at Monte Cristo Elementary School talk about the ways she has introduced the learning from other classrooms into her music program and her creativity in working around things such as the lack of money for new music. When students were reading S.E.Hinton’s novel The Outsiders in their regular classroom, Peterson helped them write a30-minute play with scenes from the book. Then they chose three Broadway tunes that focused no race, equality and social justice, the themes of the book.Peterson composed two other songs herself after classroom discussions about the play and the book. The honor means a lot to residents of Granite Foils. It’s inspiring to know that people from small towns own even win national honors. As national teacher of the year,Peterson will spend the next year outside the classroom, as a national and international spokeswoman for education. Not surprisingly,She is a big believe in the value of arts education. She said it’s essential for schools to offer classes such as art or music and physical education because for some kids one of those subjects is the only thing that motivates them to come back to school day after day. 65.The underlined word“daunting”in Paragraph1most probably means__________.

第五讲词义猜测类专项练习 【分类真题】 (2019年全国卷II.A) My Favourite Books Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列)of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads. Matilda Roald Dahl I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally fumy and frightening, but they're also aspirational. After Dark Haruki Murakami It’s about two sisters —Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse "night people" who are hiding secrets. Gone Girl Gillian Flynn There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There's tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyable. The Stand Stephen King This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever. 21. Who does "I" refer to in the text? A. Stephen King. B. Gillian Flynn. C. Jo Usmar. D. Roald Dahl.

What does the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...refer to? What does the underlined phrase "..." in Paragraph...refer to? What does the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...mean? What does the author mean by "..." in Paragraph...? Which of the following can replace the underlined word "..." in Paragraph...?
