Soundtracks

FELTON: I don't agree. I think a soundtrack is very important to a movie. Soundtracks aren't boring. I agree that not all soundtracks are great. But movies like Jaws and Superman and Indiana Jones have some of the best action movie soundtracks of all time.

FELTON: I think it was genius to use classical music in the science fiction movie 2001: Space Odyssey. Love Story has one of the saddest soundtracks of all dramas.

IAN: My favorite movies are westerns. The stories are good. The characters are great and there's just never a dull or boring moment.

KEVIN: What's he doing to her?

IAN: I think he's about to shoot her in the head. Oh no. Almost.

KEVIN: Wow. I can't believe he did that. That's some pretty bad acting actually.

IAN: It's in black and white.

KEVIN: Why is it in black and white?

IAN: It's like nineteen thirty two. The special effects aren't brilliant. It's an old movie, but it's a good story. Why the subtitles? We all speak English here, right?

IAN: I like her. Good actress.

KEVIN: Really? You think so? No, I don't agree.

IAN: It's a really good story.

KEVIN: It's not very original. I already know what's going to happen.

IAN: How do you know?

KEVIN: Westerns are always the same.

IAN: You saw the remake. That's how you know.

FELTON: It's about to start.

KEVIN: What, it's five forty-five?

KEVIN: Oh no. I'm really sorry. I lost my way.

FELTON: It's not that difficult. It's right at Grand and First Street, OK? 就在Grand and First街,对吗?

KEVIN: OK, OK, I'll get in a taxi.

FELTON: Call me when you're close.

KEVIN: Yes. I'm coming now.

All apologies

KEVIN: I'm sorry Felton. 很抱歉,Felton。

FELTON: It's ok.

KEVIN: Look. I went to the subway station in time but the subway train didn't stop at Alan Station. It re-routed to Highland Park. And I couldn't find a taxi and I tried to get on a bus. I went to Hollywood and the Rose Bowl and Chinatown and then there was this huge traffic jam and I just couldn't get out of it.

A fencing lesion

ELIZABETH: Hold the sword. No! Position the arm like this. Bend the knees. Legs shoulder-width apart.

ELIZABETH: Don't lean forward. Center, adjust to your opponent. Don't look at the sword. Keep your eye on the target.

Conducting business

STUART: 'Keep your knees bent like this'' 'Keep your feet shoulder length apart'' Are you kidding me? I mean it's almost laughable. She also said, my boss, Elizabeth, 'Put on a mask''

‘像这样弯曲你的膝盖。’‘双脚分开,与肩同宽。’你在和我开玩笑吗?我的意思是这有点可笑。她也说,我的老板Elizabeth,‘戴上了面具。’

STUART: Well clearly she likes to wear a mask. I think she likes to play sports how she conducts business. She likes to break the rules, and that's not how I want to conduct myself, not how I am going to conduct myself, especially with business. 'Don't look at the sword'' 'Keep your eye on the target''

STUART: Yeah, well, lesson learned. I'm going to keep my eye on Elizabeth. And she said something really weird: 'Keep your nose out of places where it doesn't belong'' What does that mean? I have no idea.

Dialogue

Dialogue What happens if you write bad dialogue? People will really hate reading it. Let’s take a look at good dialogue, bad dialogue, and some rules to help us write dialogue properly. The basic rules Dialogue should: ?Begin on a new line for each new speaker ?Have double or single quotation marks around the words people say. “I hate tomatoes,” Joel said. ?Have punctuation inside the quotation marks ?End the dialogue line with a comma if you’re adding a dialogue tag, but with a full stop (period) if yo u’re adding an action. A dialogue tag is something like he said. But an action, like “She folded her arms,” is not a dialogue tag. Here’s an example: “Joe, please come here,” Sarah said. “We need to talk.” “What about?” “You know what.” She folded her arms. Notice that we don’t always need to add a dialogue tag. To make a good dialogue, don’t make everything into a pattern. You need variety and balance. More details about the basic rule s 1 - Regular Quote In a regular quote, with no continuing or following sentence, use standard punctuation. "You didn't see her?" "I didn't see her."

Chapter Two Main Dialogue Denise: Excuse me, miss, how much does it cost to ride BART? Stranger: Well, that depends on your destination. From here to Glen Park it’s only a dollar ten, but if you go as far as Fremont, it costs a lot more. Tom: We’re going to Berkeley. Do you know what the fare is? Stranger: There are two stations in Berkeley. Which one are you interested in? Denise: Oh, gee, I’m not sure. We’re from out of town. We’re visiting my sister. She told me her house is just a stone’s throw from th e UC Berkeley campus. Which station is that? Stranger: The downtown Berkeley station is really close to the university. I’m sure that’s the one you want. Denise: Tom, are you going to remember this, or should I be jotting this down? Tom: What is there to write down, Denise? The woman is giving us very simple directions. So, how much is the fare to downtown Berkeley? Stranger: Let’s go take a look at the map over there. You see, the map shows you how much it costs to go from one station to another. Ah, there it is: two dollars and sixty-five cents. Tom: Two sixty-five? That’s highway robbery for such a short distance! Denise: You think that’s expensive? Tom from our house to Amherst it costs twice as much as that. Tom: Yeah, but that’s an hour ride. You really get your money’s worth. Stranger: Yeah…Uh…Well, did your sister explain which train to take? Tom: Berkeley. WE take the Berkeley train to Berkeley, right? Stranger: Well, no actually. That’s just one stop on the Richmond line. Here, let me show you on th is map. Here we are a t Powell Street in San Francisco, and it’s basically a straight shot on the Richnond line to the downtown Berkeley station. Denise: Yes, my sister said we wouldn’t have to change trains. Stranger: Uh-oh, what time is it? Denise: It’s 8:15.
