Along a rugged, wideNorth Sea beach here on a recent day, children formed teams of eight to 10,taking their places beside mounds of sand carefully cordoned by tape. They hadone hour for their sand castle competition. Some built fishlike structures, complete with scales. Others spent their time on elaborate ditch and dike labyrinths. Each castle was adorned on top with a white flag.

1.“taking their places/ beside mounds of sand /carefully cordoned by tape.”

2.a mound of [something]

3.cordon

A.noun

to throw a cordon around [something]在某物周围设置警戒线

B.transitive verb

cordon off

[cordon off something], [cordon something off]封锁

4.ditch

A.noun沟

B.transitive verb

①(get rid of)抛弃?partner, friend?; 丢弃?car, machinery?

to ditch one's boyfriend甩掉男友

②Aviation(crash-land)?pilot, crew?

Then they watched thesea invade and devour their work, seeing whose castle could with stand the tidelongest. The last standing flag won.

It was no ordinary dayat the beach, but a newly minted, state-sanctioned competition /forschoolchildren to raise awareness /of the dangers of rising sea levels /in a countryof precarious geography /that has provided lessons for the world about watermanagement, but that fears that its next generation will grow complacent.

1.Newly minted:

译文将“of the dangers of rising sea levels /in a countryof precarious geography”提前翻译出来“荷兰地理环境不稳定,海平面不断上升,”是非常聪明的做法。

还要说明的是“in a countryof precarious geography /that has provided…”这里很容易就近将that后面的句子看作是修饰geography,其实of precarious geography是形容词修饰主语country的作用,a countryof precarious geography是一个整体,表示地理环境脆弱的国家。

Fifty-five percent ofthe Netherlands is either below sea level or heavily flood-prone. Yet thanks toits renowned expertise and large water management budget (about1.25 percent ofgross domestic product), the Netherlands has averted catastrophe since aflooding disaster in 1953.

Experts here say thatthey now worry that the famed Dutch water

management system actually works toowell and that citizens will begin to take for granted the nation’s success instaying dry. As global climate change threatens to raise sea levels by as muchas four feet by the end of the century, the authorities here are working tomake real to children the forecasts that may seem far-off, but that will shapetheir lives in adulthood and old age.

It’s threatening to rain.

The fighting is threatening to turn into full-scale war.

“Everything works sosmoothly that people don’t realize anymore that they are taking a risk indeveloping urban areas in low-lying areas,” said RaimondHafkenscheid, the leadorganizer of the competition and a water expert with the Foreign Ministry.

Before the competition, the children, ages 6 to 11, were coached by experts in dike building and watermanagement. V olunteers stood by, many of them freshly graduated civilengineers, giving last-minute advice on how best to battle the rising water.

A recently releasedreport by the Organization for Economic Cooperation

and Development on watermanagement in the Netherlands pointed to an “awareness gap” among Dutchcitizens. The f inding did much to get the sand castle contest off the ground.

Early Maori adapted the tropically based east Polynesian culture in line with the challenges associated with a larger and more diverse environment, eventually developing their own distinctive culture. The British and Irish immigrants brought aspects of their own culture to New Zealand and also influenced Maori culture. More recently American, Australian, Asian and other European cultures have exerted influence on New Zealand.

1.adapt 表示“改良,改进”,而adapt oneself to/adapt to sh.

2.“in line with”表示“符合,按照,与...一致”,同义词有“in accordance with/in keeping with/in conformity with”等,这里在文中翻译成“应对”较合适。

3.“eventually developing their own distinctive culture”

Even though themajority of the population now lives in cities, much of New Zealand’s art, literature, film and humor has rural themes.

New Zealand music has been influenced by blues, jazz, country, rock and roll and hip hop, with many of these genres given a unique New Zealand interpretation. Maori developed traditional chants and songs from their ancient South-East Asian origins, and after centuries of isolation created a unique “monotonous” and “doleful” sound.

2.monotonous

3.doleful

a doleful face愁苦的脸

The number of New Zealand films significantly increased during the 1970s. In 1978 the New Zealand Film Commission started assisting local film-makers and many films attained a world audience, some receiving international acknowledgement. New Zealand television primarily broadcasts American and British programming, along with a large number of Australian and local shows. The country’s di verse scenery and compact size, plus government incentives, have encouraged some producers to film big budget movies in New Zealand.

a piece of scenery一块布景

1.“Our distinctive culture’s core to what makes New Zealand a great place to live.”

Maori culture makes New Zealand unique in a globalized world and is central to our sense of place, identifying us as a nation. Active participation by Maori indistinct Maori activity will ensure Maori culture is protected and flourishes.

Passage 1

Over the past 30 yearsor more, through reform and opening up, Tibet has been proactively promotingcommerce, foreign trade and tourism. It has increased exchanges with otherparts of China as well as communication and cooperation with foreign countries.

In 1993 Tibet began to develop the socialist market economy with the rest ofthe country, growing into a new system within the same frame work. Reforms havebeen carried out in the pricing and circulation of goods and materials, grains, and consumer goods, all of which have entered the market system. CurrentlyTibet is incorporated into the national market system. Commodities from allover the nation and across the world keep flowing into Tibet, enriching the urbanand rural markets as well as the lives of the people. At the same time,well-known and high-quality products with local characteristics and folkhandcrafts are transported to other parts of the country in large quantities.

Economically, Tibet isnow more and more closely linked to the world. By the end of 2012 actualized foreign investment in Tibet was 470million U.S. dollars. Taking advantage of its geographical position, Tibet isbuilding a

“commodity passageway” to South Asia via the land route to promoteborder trade.

Passage 2

Mankind is in a periodof adaptation to extreme weather conditions. Sweltering summers, violenthurricanes, freezing winters and monstrous floods have almost become “frequent visitors”. And favorable weather has seemedto be elevated to a “luxury”.

Meteorologists havemixed views of this. Some believe this should be attributable to climatechange, some argue that extreme climate is caused by atmospheric circulationanomaly, and still others insist that the El Nino effect needs to be blamed asthe main culprit.

1.culprit

Anyhow, most scholarsagree on certain propositions that global climate change is accelerating andextreme weather will grow more frequent, intense and wide-ranging. Given anincreasing frail / even weaker global

climate, mankind need think morecarefully about how to effectively manage our own activities and cherish ourshared homeland.

Future extreme weatherevents will exert a growing impact on those industries closely linked toclimate change such as water conservancy, agriculture, forestry, energy, healthand tourism. Once again I spelt out directions even a blind person could follow, I glanced impatiently at my watch, and waited. Only two hours remained until my flight left and it was an hour-and-a-half trip to the airport. Outside, heavy rains were pouring down. My house was so far north in the city that buses pass only three times a day. The telephone rang again. "Terribly sorry," began the man at the taxi company. Then I rea-lized that the taxi company, flooded with calls, could only offer in-city runs. I had heard this happens when the weather gets bad. I shouted into the phone that I had a plane to catch and I would meet the taxi outside my house. Standing in the wind-driven rain, I looked up and down the road. No taxi. A car went by, driver and passenger staring at the crazy foreigner in the downpour. Finally a white car appeared and pulled to a stop. A young man threw open the door, waving for me to get in. Shaking with cold and anger, I climbed in.

According to Paragraph 1,most previous surveys found that home___(根据第一段可知,之前的调查中认为家是一个____地方)。[A] offered greater relaxation than the workplace [B] was an ideal place for stress measurement [C] generated more stress than the workplace [D] was an unrealistic place for relaxation题目中明确给出范围,所以我们只要在第一段中找答案,且要注意题目中的关键词是previous。 A new study suggests that contrary to most surveys, people are actually more stressed at home than at work.(新的研究显示不同于以往的绝大多数调查,人们在家比工作时的压力更大)。这句话中new、contrary to most surveys是提示词,与题目中的previous study相对应的,不难做出正确答案是[A] 第22题According to Damaske, who are likely to be the happiest at home?(Damaske 认为,谁可能是最家里最快乐的?) It is men, not women, who report being happier at home than at work. Another surprise is that findings hold true for both those with children and without, but more so for nonparents. The blurring of working women's roles refers to the fact that__。 With the blurring of roles,发现前面的句子正是对这种现象的解释:for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with-household tasks.以及后面的the home front lags well behind the workplace a making adjustments for working women,指的便是女性不仅得工作赚钱,而且还得在家得忙家务,所以她们的身份是双重的。所以选[D] they are both bread winners and housewives. The word“ moola”(Line4,Para4)most probably means__这是一道词义推测题,它与前文中的marking money是近义词,答案选[C] earnings收入。 第25题The home front differs from the workplace in that__。文章第5段there are inadequate rewards for most of them. Your home colleagues-your family-have no clear rewards for their labor;家务劳动不会像工作一样得到足够的奖励,而且分工也是不明确的。 [A] division of labor at home is seldom clear-cut.

Section I Use of English Directions: Read the following passage. For each numbered blank there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET l. (10 points) The outbreak of swine flu that was first detected in Mexico was declared a global pandemic on June 11, 2009, in the first designation by the World Health Organization of a worldwide pandemic in 41 years. The heightened alert came after an emergency meeting with flu experts in Geneva that convened after a sharp rise in cases in Australia, and rising numbers in Britain, Japan, Chile and elsewhere. But the pandemic is "moderate" in severity, according to Margaret Chan, the organization's director general, with the overwhelming majority of patients experiencing only mild symptoms and a full recovery, often in the absence of any medical treatment. The outbreak came to global notice in late April 2009, when Mexican authorities noticed an unusually large number of hospitalizations and deaths among healthy adults. As much of Mexico City shut down at the height of a panic, cases began to crop up in New York City, the southwestern United States and around the world. In the United States, new cases seemed to fade as warmer weather arrived. But in late September 2009, officials reported there was significant flu activity in almost every state and that virtually all the samples tested are the new swine flu, also known as (A) H1N1, not seasonal flu. @Zov&0 1 In the U.S., it has infected more than one million people, and caused more than 600 deaths and more than 6,000 hospitalizations. Federal health officials released Tamiflu for children from the national stockpile and began taking orders from the states for the new swine flu vaccine. The new vaccine, which is different from the annual flu vaccine, is available ahead of expectations. More than three million doses were to be made available in early October 2009, though most of those initial doses were of the FluMist nasal spray type, which is not recommended for pregnant women, people over 50 or those with breathing difficulties, heart disease or several other problems. But it was still possible to vaccinate people in other high-risk group: health care workers, people caring for infants and healthy young people.
